6:00 pm
nick: another two birdies and it could get serious down the 1th. jim: two birdies 16 through 18 hard to find. nick: i know. but in softness is going to give them a chance. jim: let's go to 14. ian: second for justin thomas. try and spin it in from the left side. maybe he can make this one for birdie having missed the short one back at 13. [captioning funded by cbs sports division] [captioning performed by the national captioning institute, which is responsible for its caption content and accuracy. visit ncicap.org] . ian: well, it's 6:00, top of the hour, we're here at muirfield village golf club at the memorial tournament. we had a rain delay of an hour and 15 minute. we're back at play now. they fired the horn and sent them back again and it looks like we could get it down as we watch bubba at 14 and his second. ooh, he didn't get that first
6:01 pm
skip forward. so 25 feet or so left for bubba. she at nine under par. the lead is 1 with rickie fowler and jason dufner ahead at the 15th. and the final pairing back here at 13. gary: he threw that too far. you could see that. peter: that's not a good lie there, gary. that's where the players walk up to the 139 tee. gary: going right back at him? peter: yeah. gary: all right, that looks really wide up there, doesn't it? dottie: and it's single file, gentlemen, and a little easier hole. not into the wind as it was earlier in the day. jim: that will work very nicely for dufner. and here's rickie.
6:02 pm
nick: loves it. by that reaction. uphill all the way. a really big hit. amazing to just get it over 300 yards. jim: to 13. gary: he can see tall green so he can hit that a little fat and -- uh-oh. peter, they're butchering this hole the last couple of groups. nobody putting for a birdie other than thomas and he missed it from about four feet. now, back on 16. 208 yards. >> bunkered it? gary: yeah, i can answer that
6:03 pm
for you. peter, who's going to putt first here? peter: i can't believe matt kuchar. maybe not. it's summerhays. he got the benefit of seeing his go past hole so that's going to help him with his -- past the hole so that's going to help him with his read. but 12-footers for par is not what you need at this point in the proceedings. gary: not trying to win your first one, right? peter: it's never easy. gary: he's got this played out to the right. looks like maybe a foot out to the right. hit it, hit it. oh, right in the middle. wow! what a good up and down. peter: could that be his defining moment in this round? keep the momentum going or turn it around a little bit! gary: that was beautiful, only one shot back. he just guted that thing.
6:04 pm
don't bite your tongue, no -- there we go. gets dangerous. let's go see bubba. ian: he started out so well today. three under through six but he's dropped those three, hasn't had a birdie since the sixth. wow, that was a good putt. 13. gary: see if kuch can do the same thing. oh, that thing just bled off to the right. like you said, peter, he got a good break with the drop from the drain but then did not take advantage of it. peter: absolute must that you take advantage of good breaks if you want to win a tournament. gary: matt kuchar, you can see the back nine not treating him sowell so far.
6:05 pm
-- so well so far. 13. gary: good opportunity. another good putt for justin thomas. it was speeding by and low. -- not that good putt for justin thomas. it was speeding by and low. this to rainfall one back. certainly has the length to reach the 15th easily. the next hole. maybe influenced by bubba there, nick. having seen bubba stay high, may have thought that that wouldn't break. nick: but it was only fractionally high. bubba's was half a ball above it. it was nearly perfect. ian: very nearly perfect speed too.
6:06 pm
jim: 1. gary: and that was really a difficult bunker shot because he had no green and there's a spine coming off there that's going down from the bunker to the hole so that's just about as good as you're going to do and that's 20 feet, 16th hole. hardest ranked hole on the golf course today. by the way, the 17th hole is the second hardest so good luck, guys coming from. -- in let's go to 4. ian: definitely a birdie opportunity here, though, gary. peter: if you find the fairway. ian: which you must do. peter: a little loss of balance there. nick: yeah, but he got away with it. ian: a little slippery now with a little rain still sprinkling down. hybrid now for matt kuchar. winner here back in 2013. he's at nine under, two behind.
6:07 pm
so both players in this final pairing finding the fairway here at 14. good chances to be able to go at that pin. we'll be back at the memorial tournament presented by nationwide in just a moment.
6:08 pm
is gary: kevin kisner now for probable par from about 22 feet and got kind of stuck in the grass and he is going to make a bogey, as a lot of guys have on this hole. 15. jim: two crucial shots coming up. second shots by dufner and fowler at 15. dime dufner's chose an 7-wood. 243. the flag cut middle left.
6:09 pm
nick: possibly in between clubs so don't make the forced swing on that -- full swing on that one, which was the right move. jim: two putts away from birdieing this hole for the fourth straight day. and now rickie. dottie: 5-wood. still a bit of an uphill lie. i don't think he can hit all this. nick: no. be careful you don't come off and block it right. dottie: he's choked down a bit. nick: wow, that started right. oh. i hope everybody's ok. got their attention. they're laughing. ok, we'll take that as yes, everybody's ok. [laughter] not so sure rickie is ok up there. jim: license plate than been a hard shot there, jack? jack: that's always a hard shot
6:10 pm
but it will be helped by the rain. he looks like he has a pretty decent lie. jim: to 14. ian: ideal positions for both players here. peter: kuch har has 124 yards. the wind is picking up a little bit and it's behind the players. this is just a gap wedge. control your trajectory, control your spin. ian: no one's played this course better than matt kuchar over the last seven or eight years. oh. peter: well, he's been doing a lot of launch monitor practice on sudans from 75 to 125 and just hit that one a yard too far left or a yard too far long. ian: exactly. didn't need much. a fraction further right or a little more spin.
6:11 pm
peter: summerhays now, 119. has a little bit better angle to keep this left of the hole. his brother broith boyd walked up to me after the putt on 13 and said you know, it's never easy winning your first tournament, is it? ian: none of them are easy. nick jones. can't be feeling much breeze, guys. there's nothing at 1. ian: there's a bit down there on the pond and the stream, nick. a little behind, a little left right. nick: that's perfect. ian: yeah, just hit it quick. float it in and spin it down.
6:12 pm
hits it very high, peter, doesn't me? those wedges. peter: that's beautifully done there. ian: beautiful shot. ah, the first lady of golf, barbara nicklaus. what a lovely lady. she does so much for the charities here with the nationwide hospital and i know down at home with the hospitals down there at the honda classic. she is beloved. 15 tee. nick: getting serious now these last four holes. jim: it's amazing how far he can launch it for his size. nick: yeah, pound for pound, he's got to be the longest out there. jim: that's right. up on the green.
6:13 pm
the ticklish shot coming up for co-lead ericky fowler. nick: he can put it right many that spot there. dottie: still very steep where he's going to lapped this golf ball. nick: but if he even goes eight feet past, it's good. somewhere there. leaves a flat, uphill putt. jim: well, someone got a souvenir for being in the range of that second shot. nick: it's worth.netting a bruise, suspect it? [laughter] jim: depends on where it hits you. nick: it's a good story. all right, i have no idea where this is going to go. jim: remember the year bubba contended here and he got it off
6:14 pm
the map at 15? nick: he got o.b. right. that's ok. jim: it's a bit odd the way he reacted to that one but it's safe. jack, tell me about this putt, eagle putt. jack: uphill, goes a little bit right. not a difficult putt. nick: yeah, uphill and a little damp. you have to force yourself to hit that one. one of the few putts you actually can give it a go. jim: 14. ian: just has to putt this a yard on, let it roll down to the hole. very tasty. the 2013 champion here, matt kuchar. that was lovely touch. nick: rickie has been really
6:15 pm
good arizona at these today and over the week. especially the weekend. a nice simple tap. loses it on the right. jim: par here. it's hurtful. you have summerhays in close for a birdie at 14. of course he still has this par 5 to play. and summerhays one behind. dufner, though, also has a birdie bid here to take the lead outright after squandering it yesterday early. he has hung in there. faced this great challenge and now's a chance to reemerge.
6:16 pm
jack, that's resilient right there. jack: really is. i saw jason at breakfast this morning and i said nice playing the first two rounds. sorry about yesterday, i said. the only good thing about yesterday -- and he said i still have a chance to win and i said you're absolutely right. nick: we -- he went to the range last night to work on that tempo we were talking about, jack. jim: summerhays at 14. nick: everything is certainly huge right now, sit -- isn't it, guys? ian: it certainly is. needed that one to get to 11. nick: that's the great thing about your course, jack. if you hit it, it gathers but if you hit the top of the hills, it comes back. that's what happened to rickie. a little body english. jim: bubba looks it.
6:17 pm
down there on the front of the grown where dufner just two-putted for birdie. now, what will thomas have left? just an iron. nick: great view. jim: oh, my goodness. what in the world? oh, it's back on the earth. that could have easyly -- easily -- nick: that arrived so late, it arrived monday morning. jack: i don't understand this from justin. nick: it's so violent, these swings. jack: sometimes. sometimes he's nice and smooth and there he just got his lower body flying. nick: best advice is slow it down to a blur for the last few

holes. that's why a cutting edgeworld. university counts on centurylink to keep their global campus connected. and why a pro football team chose us to deliver fiber-enabled broadband to more than 65,000 fans. and why a leading car brand counts on us to keep their dealer network streamlined and nimble. businesses count on communication, and communication counts on centurylink.
6:19 pm
gary: ok, you ready for some money? all the players that played today. only eight guys have hit the ball on the green. dottie: that's daunting, gary. that's a 6-iron. gary: one birdie, dottie. one. dottie: got to be easier now that there's moisture. got be. gary: most of the guys diving for the right bunker and they've got nothing. they can't even get it within 20 feet. eight out of 70 guys. [laughter] that's a hard hole. look at this balls in the water, 15. dottie: rickie's chosen the same club, 6-iron. the rain starting to come down
6:20 pm
pretty hard again but straight down no, wind. gary: to the right of the flagstick, nothing. over the green is nothing. dottie, we need to get a bird cage and put a canary in it. if the canary goes under and flops down, don't play the hole. nick: has to dry those grips. dottie: it's starting right at it, gary. gary: it is. oh, man he's got nothing now. just a perfect golf shot. 20 yards. flew that thing about 207 yards.
6:21 pm
6-iron. whoa. jim: summerhays on the tee at 15. nick: been driving well. peter: this one's going to be fine too except this hole is playing significantly longer than earlier in the week. nick: yeah, tough to climb that hill now. two or three guys getting over 300 and if you've been watching they've been up to 370, 380 on anything downhill. jim: up by the green, thomas, whose second shot flirted with going out of bounds. but he's on an uphill lie here. nick: that's a lot deeper than it looks, jack, isn't it? jack: yeah, what a break he got. oh, my gosh. nick: oh, he's just wrecked it. that's the last place to chip it. anything but there. oh, no. jim: 17. ian: this is kevin kisner, winner last week.
6:22 pm
168 with an -iron. barely a breath of breeze here right now and two wonderful shots. fellow competitor, playing partner jordan spieth. also came in second and a former champion at colonial. last week he was right in the mix right to the end. another great tournament like we have here today. so many with an opportunity to win. currently seven players at nine under or better. two good chances for birdie there, as we held back to 15. jim: bubba will be next to play. he has -- in this two-day stretch of 61 shots on the second side on friday and saturday. 31 and 30 but not the same kind of success today.
6:23 pm
nick: that's ok. just not quite breaking. these greens have lost their fire, obviously, after that rain. and still raining. jim: he's going to get a shot back here once he finishes that off. nick: dufner's in a good position at 16. being left of the flag and with his style of play, i believe he's going to hit fairways and greens the last -- two more holes. jim: 17. ian: jordan currently seven under. just a little firm for the line he chose so he'll remain at seven. that's 10th at the moment. back to 16. gary: good luck. dottie: he doesn't have much, gary. the grass is going right into him. that's really good. gary: that's really, really good.
6:24 pm
i can't tell you how good that is. 15. in my opinion this is just a -- just a one-yard chip. he overplayed it. jim: and he'll have that for par. nick: should have gone to his putting grip on that one and just tried to foipt one yard. sideways almost. jim: 17. ian: kevin kisner could get up there close. he continues his good play. two wins, six seconds in the last couple of years for kisner. really one of the players to watch now. to so we now have eight players at nine under or better. gary: ian, this putt is 30 feet, 9 inches for everybody out there keeping score.
6:25 pm
dottie:: kind of a two-part putt. the first part going up thehill then it kind of natens up. gary: -- dottie: what a good try. gary: excellent putt right there. 15. jim: thomas. nick: we're now in that situation where everything has got to be hold now. jim: that was a wild adventure. he was in such good position off the tee. all pars on the back nine for the 2012 jack nicklaus award winner. nick: that's custom opportunity. jim: that's college golfer of the year award and brushing in
6:26 pm
his birdie bubba to join anonymous at 10 under par. two off the lead. 1. gary: that's a fantastic up and down! a great three. stroke average here is like 3.6. 17. ian: a little recovery now for jordan spieth here for his par. banged it in. 16th the hardest home. 17th the second hardest and 8, the fourth hardest. so it's a tough finish. back at 16. gary: solid. gary: solid. he's got the lead by one. fellow competitor ricky fowler not going to let him get too far
6:27 pm
away. 15. jim: summerhays. peter: 260-yard 3-wood off an uphill lie. jim: we'll be right back with more golf action from the memorial tournament presented by nationwide right after this word from you're local station.
6:28 pm
jim: "60 minutes" leads off the lineup tonight on cbs. that's the lineup now this evening on cbs. 16. gary: begging.
6:29 pm
>> bunker? gary: it is definitely in the bunker, right in the middle of it. kuch. jim: at 15. peter: found the left trees off the team. laid it up aggressively. found this right rough. 14 yards. nick: he really leaned into that one. his follow-through to stop it from hook. jim: 17. ian: driver club of choice for jason dufner here at the par 4. dottie: needs to squeeze it between the two closest fairway bunkers. ian: when the wind was blowing so hard earlier this morning, we saw a lot of balls go 350 yards down the hill here. dottie: that's very good with just a tiny bit of breeze sepping.
6:30 pm
ian: beautiful drive. absolutely it have. has been striking the ball well this week. nick: that puts a little bit of pressure on rickie. ian: it does. he's got the 3-wood out. nick: that's good, he's playing his own game thefpblet i love it when they bend down, pick the tee up himmy. that's a good hit with the three wood. also in the short grass. ideal. back to the par 5. jim: this certainly isn't an easy task. nick: oh, he didn't get such strike on that well-. peter: that lie, nick, he didn't make clean enough exact. nick: i always made sure i
