weeks, first prosecution witness works for a catholic nursing home caring for williams elderly mother, that woman is expect to take the stand again later to day. in opening statements federal prosecutors painted a picture of district attorney seth williams as a man who used his position to broker deals with two local businessman resulting in plane tickets, a car, even a sofa. he was expected to return those favors through preferential treatment and a position in the d.a.'s office. >> good morning. >> reporter: on his turn defense attorney thomas berk told the jury his client made mistakes but they didn't amount to a crime and described the businessman as williams close friend. the prosecution's first witness was kathleen depriest of catholic health services who testified that williams signed paperwork that he would direct his mother's pension payments to pay for her nursing home care, but she says instead of making payments williams spent that money on himself.

easton road in ot tsville. police were conducting a mental health check on a man living inside the home yesterday afternoon, when authorities say they found guns, ammunition and chemical explosives. that is when they called in the bomb squad. neighbors say there is a propane company just yard away from this home, the home owner was taken into custody. also, crews will be busy over next few days cleaning up this mess, some train cars came off tracks yesterday in sellersville we are told three of the cars that derailed were loaded with butter, three other cars carrying wood also partially came off the track, some diesel fuel also, leaked from a refridge unit in, one was hurt. new information this morning in a hit and run in burlington township that left victim fighting for her life. police say they are looking for a car like this one silver 1997 or 98 mazda prote ge, victim crossing southbound lanes of route 130 and devlin

avenue 9:15 sunday night when one car hit her and another car dragged her, moments later surveillance video shows one of the cars pulled into a nearby car dealership, the driver, passenger switched seats before driving off. authorities say that a new jersey police officer involved in the crash in hamilton killed himself just before the collision. officials say that the officer was off-duty when his suv struck back of the van yesterday in the 2700 block of nottingham way. the officer was initially thought to have been killed inside that crash but the mercer county officials say that he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, no one else was injured in the accident. republicans hold on to a pivotal house seat in georgia following a win in the state's special election. republican karen handle will fill the state's sixth district congressional seat after defeating democrat john ossoff yesterday that seat has been held by a republican since 1979. handle secured 52 percent to ossoff's 48 percent. it was most expensive u.s.

that is as tropical storm sinned moves through bringing wind, heavy rain. >> so parts of the coast could get as much as a foot of rain, correspondent hanna daniels reports people are warned about possible flash flood. >> reporter: tropical storm cindy is making her presence known packing sustain wind of 60 miles an hour as she move toward the gulf coast, heavy rainfall pounded biloxi mississippi and that rain is what forecasters say is the biggest threat, residents are being warned that there could be life threatening, flash flooding. louisiana and national guard dispatched high water vehicles and helicopter to flood prone areas and state officials are telling residents who want to head to the mainland to do it as soon as possible. the first heavy band of rain and wind hit new orleans last night, soaking the cities famous french quarter and bourbon street. >> this is going to be a serious event, we could get lucky and it could turnout to be nothing but we don't expect that will happen, it could be

one to three or three to 12. >> forecasters say cindy will crawl her way toward texas over next couple of days, hanna daniels for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". well, a line of severe storms spawned two tornadoes in our region. >> one touched down right in berks county twister was caught on camera in berks county on monday. ef0 tornado packed wind up to 80 miles an hour, several trees in the area were uprooted but there was in serious damage, another tornado was confirmed near greenwood, delaware. another tornado touched down monday night in southern delaware, right, katie. >> that is right, guys, do i want to take you out and show you some of that video if we can, look at this incredible, this is inside the eye of monday's tornado in greenwood, delaware. and you can see the center of the screen. national weather service used this video, to verify what

ended up being a ef0 tornado that had max wind up to 85 miles an hour. you can see debris going in the circle in that vortex. unbelievable. but that is the thing, it is like proverbial tree in the forest if you didn't catch it, see it happen, leave any damage behind or run into something that would have left damage, did it happen add all? that is part of the problem when it comes to verifying these tornadoes for national weather service. it goodies we are starting to see these camera shots pop up, all over on surveillance video that sent storm scan, definitely has action packed across the gulf coast, heavy rain, spilling into the gulf states here out ahead of the storm system and tropical storm system that has not made land fall yet. we are sandwich between veil of cloud cover, cape may county for example and off to the north and west but we expect sunshine. bring it back down to the gulf we will talk about flash flooding in hand's package there. this is incredible rainfall for one system potential of

solar eclipse coast to coast. nast scientist doctor alex young joins us live from the goddard space flight center in green belt, maryland to talk about this anticipated event, good morning, doctor young. >> good morning. >> so doctor young, this is scheduled to take place in about two months from today august 21st. why is an event like this so rare and where will it take place? >> well, you know, only about every 18 months or so, the earth, moon and sun line up just right so that the moon casts a shadow down on the earth, and anyone in the line of that shadow in that path of totality will experience a total solar eclipse, this will start in oregon and it will travel, across the you had, ending in south carolina but the amazing thing is not only do we have this total eclipse but everyone in the you had, including north america, central, part of the south america is going to get to experience at lee a partial

eclipse, and, including, you guys, you will see about 75 percent of the sun covered up. >> wow. >> yeah, you just mentioned this a little bit but what will we see august 21st and how can people safely view this. >> well, so what will happies, you know, starting at 2:20 the moon will start to take a bite out of the sun, it will move across and when it reaches, its maximum at 3:44, you know, about 75 percent of the sun will be covered so you will notice a change in light, it will be darker outside, and you will even see, strange shadows cast from the ground but one of the thing that is very important is we want to make sure you have protective eye wear, still too bright so safe solar viewing glasses like this, and or you can use direct projection method, even using your hand or other thing to project pin holes in the ground you will be able to see as the moon moves across the

sun. >> so doctor young your scientists so excited for this what are they hoping to learn. >> well, thinks an opportunity to see both our atmosphere of the sun called the correspondence roane a, so during totality we can see a region of the sun's atmosphere in visible light that is only visible from a total solar eclipse on the ground and that shows us, a unique area of the sun, where all of this incredible activity happens, creating what we call space weather, that actually can impact you and i hear on earth in terms of our technology but also, because of this is going across such a big piece of land it gives us an opportunity to study it much longer, and even, study effect s on the ground, we can see changes that animals have, plants have, and it actually creates its own micro climate as the shadow moves across the earth, and so we will be able to study it from the ground, from balloons, from space, and away that in one has ever done

most expense any of house history, with the candidates spending more than 56 million-dollar, nearly double the previous record. weijia jiang for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". well, federal corruption trial of the philadelphia district attorney seth williams continues today, jurors heard opening statements in a center city courtroom yesterday. prosecutors say that williams took part in five criminal schemes and accepted bribes in exchange for legal favors. they say he stole more than $10,000 of his mother's pension and social security money that was meant to pay for her nurse being home care, the prosecution's first witness was briefly cross-examine yesterday afternoon, that will continue this morning at 9:30. o.j. simpson could be a freeman later this year, former football star will go before a parole board in nevada on july 20th to determine if he is eligible for early release. o.j. simpson is currently serving a nine to three three-year sentence for his role in a 2007 armed robbery,

if the board decide to release him o.j. could be released as early as october. pennsylvania's medical marijuana program is moving forward, the department of health has granted 12 permits which allows growing and processing of medical marijuana in the state. >> today signals start of the next phase of the medical marijuana program, the 12 permits will have six months in which to become operational growers, process others, may not begin to grow medical marijuana until the department has been deemed that they are operational. >> now two of the growers and processors are in southeastern , pennsylvania, both in berks county, permits for dispensaries will be issued later this month. and for the first time in over 30 years pennsylvania is toughening animal cruelty and neglect laws, newly passed legislation reclassified such abuse as a felony, and severe juror death, it also targets
