♪ from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia this is cbs3 "eyewitness news". well right now at noon back in court the corruption trial of philadelphia district attorney seth williams continues. and this morning the spotlight has been on one of the accusations against him that he ripped off his own mother. good afternoon i'm jim donovan. rahel has the afternoon off. the government is calling more witnesses to the stand to bolster its case against philadelphia's top prosecutor. our greg argos is in the courtroom this morning and joins us outside federal court in center city with the latest

developments. good afternoon, greg. >> reporter: good afternoon, jim. right now the federal government is still calling their witnesses the focus so far in seth williams federal corruption and bribery trial has been on his alleged theft of money meant to pay his mother's nursing home bill. now the sitting district attorney entering the federal courthouse in center city this morning on day two of his trial. the prosecution led by a team of three assistant us attorneys have laid out five separate s so-called schemes they allege william committed. prosecutors say williams traded the his position as city's top law enforcement officer for bribes. over seas trips, a couch and even a 1997 jaguar convertible but the focus so far has been on williams alleged theft of his own mother's social security and pension money. earmarked for her nursing home health care. the government has called four witnesses so far including the director of admissions and kathy lean de frees the director of accounts receivable for that nursing home. de frees testify williams was the quote responsible party for

his mother and instead of paying the nursing home for his mother's care he used her bank account to pay bills and to purchase items from old navy and other retailers. now minutes ago the director of admissions she is currently testifying right now and she did admit she likely does not review each and every document with each and every person who comes into the facility. williams defense claims the da was never properly told of his financial responsibility for his mother's bills. for now we're live in center city. i'm greg argos, cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> thank you greg for that update. meanwhile in other news today we hope to learn more about the death investigation taking place in maple shady burlington coun county. chopper three over police activity behind the iron hill brewery on east kings highway. the prosecutor's office is leading the investigation. but as not released any more information at this time. a representative for the represent aunt says a shooting happened in the parking lot this morning. but that no workers or customers were involved or injured. well developing this noon a

murder investigation in woolwich township, gloucester county. chopper three over forest court where a woman was found dead in a swimming pool at her home on saturday. authorities have just identified the victim as 47-year-old michelle long. the cause of death blunt force trauma. no word on a motive or if police have any suspects at this time. right now a suspected rapist is back in police custody after officers say they accidentally set him free. police say russell bryant who's waiting trial on rape charges was brought down from khuram from hold correctional facility and being processed for unrela unrelated charges when he was inadvertently release yesterday afternoon. it's unclear exactly how he was let go but he's now back behind bars. police are looking for a masked gunman who tried to rob a south philadelphia grocery store last month. the suspect was seen on surveillance video entering the store on the 1400 block of south 16th street. when he pulled out gun, police say the employee started screaming and the suspect ran away empty handed.

if you recognize anything about this suspect, police want to hear from you. philadelphia police are also looking for help in finding this man officers say he stole some expensive electronics from an unlocked car. this surveillance video shows the man walking in the 500 block of west thompson street monday afternoon. man was able to get into a parked car through unlocked door. he then got away with anism pad and several other items. officials are investigating the cause of a fire that this morning at a montgomery county industrial park. chopper three was over a building at palmer international on lou couldn't road in schwenksville where crews were responding to fire on the roof. no injuries were repor reported. and crews had the fire under control shortly after 10:00 a.m. well, service is back for most customers in glenside after an overnight water main break. officials say all but one of the 92 customers have had their water service restored water was seen flowing in the streets from the busted 12-inch main near mount caramel and north tyson avenue. the scene is not far from septa's glenn said station.

more prone to talk about summer in terms of meteorological summer that actually got underway as of june 1st. it's more of a climatological trend we follow we're talking about meteorological summer pick the one that you like here. officially though we are in the summer season no matter which one you pick here. and astronomical summer again guided by that solstice lasts until september 22nd. when the equinox will then lead news fall. for now, though, storm scan is pretty quite that will not stay that way as spotty shower or thunderstorm is scheduled to get triggered b by a weak trough that's dropping in. that's actual wrl some of these clouds are coming from. mid 80s up and down i-95. nice warm beginning to the afternoon with more sun than anything. the humidity starting to creep up and on us spotty shower or storm later this afternoon and evening. little later on in the broadcast jim we'll track that for you and we are also going to talk about that creeping humidity a little bit more, too. back in to you. >> creeping humidity. don't like that term, katie. thank you so very much. well, incredible video now it shows the inside of that tornado that touched down in greenwood, delaware, monday.

it was recorded outside the delaware electric cooperative. the national weather service used this video to help verify that tornado did actually touchdown. it was rated an ef-zero. and more severe tropical storm cindy bearing down on the gulf coast millions of people in the storm's path are already experiencing heavy rain and dangerous flash flooding. correspondent don champion has more from biloxi, mississippi. >> reporter: tropical storm cindy isn't expected to make landfall for another 24 hours. but the storm is already drenching the gulf coast and whipping up winds. in georgia, heavy downpours caused flash flooding leaving people trapped. >> we all try to get in the cars and drive out. this happens. >> reporter: national weather service issued flash flood watches from southeast texas to florida. some areas could receive more than a foot of rain. >> we're going to prepare for the worst, you know, in case we get that 10-inches of rain we'll have some flooding. >> reporter: this morning, a driver captured this waterspout

in ocean springs, mississippi, another one was spotted near biloxi. >> cindy is expected to make landfall between southeast texas and southwest louisiana sometime tomorrow. with a possible 3-foot storm surge. >> in new orleans, crews trust sand bags to flood prone neighborhoods. louisiana governor declared a state of emergency ahead of the storm. there's a texas louisiana border vacationers are keeping a watchful eye on the approaching threat. >> we're just going to ride it out. we're going see how everything goes. i think we'll be all right. >> reporter: officials believe cindy could have a major impact along 500-mile swath of the gulf coast. don champion for cbs3 "eyewitness news". now, cindy is the third named storm of the season. but the first to take direct aim at the us. in other news, lawmakers on the house and senate committees who are investigating russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election are both hearing -- holding hearings on capitol hill.

correspondent breaks it all down for us. >> reporter: former homeland security secretary jay johnson testified before the house intelligence committee about russia's meddling in the 2016us presidential election. >> the russian government at the direction of vladimir putin himself orchestrated cyber attacks on our nation for the purpose of influencing our election. that is a fact. >> reporter: johnson said the cyber intrusion did not alter votes but the attack attacks wit worse. >> the key question for the president and the congress is, what are we going to do to protect the american people? >> reporter: johnson says the election infrastructure needed to be designated as critical so the department of homeland security could better help stage protect their systems. >> in my view this is something that was sort of a no brainer, and in fact, probably should have been done years before. >> reporter: the senate committee conducting its own russia investigation held similar hearing with dhs and fbi officials on the other side of the capitol today. senator mark warner called for more transparent see from the

agencies. >> to not put all americans on notice, not to have the number of states that were hacked into or attempted to be hacked into still kept secret is just crazy. >> reporter: the department of homeland security has a policy to protect confidentiality. >> when the entity is a victim of a cyber incident, we believe very strongly in protecting the, um, information around that victim. >> reporter: officials say they do extract the technical data related to the tax and share the information brawled. cbs3 "eyewitness news". now in addition to those two committees special council robert mueller is also investigating whether there was nicole lucien between president trump's associates and russia. the president maintains there was no collusion and call the investigation a witch hunt. well, things are returning back to normal in brussels that's after man blew up an explosive device inside a busy train station yesterday. we'll let you know how government officials say they plan to keep people there safe. and police in california shut down an unlicensed daycare.

chemical explosives and bot squad was called n the homeowner was taken into custody. friends and family will gather this afternoon to say goodbye to the muslim teenager who was killed sunday in what police are calling a road rage incident. people across the country are holding vigils calling for nabra's death to be considered a hate crime. 17-year-old was walking with friends near a sterling virginia mosque when the driver of a car tried to run them over. the man then allegedly parked and allegedly beat hassanen with a baseball bat. police named 22-year-old darwin martinez torres as the suspect. brussels central station reopened this morning after a man blew up an explosive device. the attacker was shot by soldiers and later died. no one else was hurt. a passerby took this photo of the small explosion late tuesd tuesday. authorities also detonated an explosive belt that the attack derr kerr was wearing. belgium officials say security had remain tight at rail stations throughout brussels in the wake of the attack. police in southern

california make major drug bust in home that was operating as an unrunsed daycare. police raided the los angeles area home last month and arrested the homeowner now authorities claim the suspect tried to sell 44 pounds of cocaine to an undercover agent. some of the drugs were allegedly found in a room where children would take naps. >> they saw kids being dropped off and playing in the yard, at the same time that they recovered more than $400,000 worth of cocaine at this proper. >> police say they found a total of 55 pounds of cocaine in the house. authorities filed a federal lawsuit to have the property declared a public nuisance. well the lapd arrested a total of seven police a cadets since last week for alleged bad behavior they're accused of stealing police cars and then leading real officers on wild pursuits in the stolen cruisers and even conducting car stops. all of the cadets who were arrested range in age from 14 to

little batch of scattered showers starting to drop in northeast pa or nepa. that's what is going to get fired up around our region locally then you've got cindy and your eye immediately drawn to this looking a heck a love more organized than recent days. heavy rain with this is the story and it's really pump link parts of alabama and mississippi right now this is going to lift north and in a second i'll show you the track with that. but let's take a look at future weather for the rest of today. since we have this trough that's digging in. i think we're good for the next hour or two at least if not three. but then we'll start to see some firing up of locally brief but heavy downpours places like the poconos, far western suburb getting in on the first and some of that likely fire up in around the city of philadelphia. so perhaps messing with some of your evening drives as you head homily don't be shocked if you have to quickly roll up the windows or flick the windshield wipers a handful of times through any of these hell bursts of rain. then it's out of here thursday looking nice and clear and hot. wait until you see the seven

day. let's track cindy for you currently it's moving sluggishly into the northwest at 10 miles an hour. so expected to make that landfall as we heard from don champion earlier in the show once it moves on shore, it's going to eventually make this right hand turn. it looks like it's coming our way, doesn't it? i still think we'll going to be dealt nothing more than a glancing blow out of this but this sort of gets absorbed by an approaching frontal boundary. look at the rape fall expectations author of out of this mull pell inches expected across parts of the gulf states and then eventually as this works its way toward the ohio valley there might even be multiple inches of rain north of that river valley into indiana and parts of the buck eye state. back to here locally, though, again i'm not thinking this will be major deal for our area in the meantime, as we take you out live to another beach, there's still hundreds of people on this beach point as well. at the boardwalk plaza rehoboth. lots of folks out and boy enjoying the warmth and sunshine, and actually more humidity in some of these places as we take a look at the dew points. 59 in philly still feels pretty
