(giggles) (crowd cheers) keep on scratchin'! >> live from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia, this is cbs3 "eyewitness news". right now at noon, home openers in one philadelphia neighborhood wake up to a disturbing site. graffiti spray painted on their houses. police are investigating while cleaning up is beginning with city workers. good afternoon i'm jim donovan. rahel is off today. reporter greg argos is live in south philadelphia with more on the investigation. good afternoon, greg. >> reporter: good afternoon there, jim. neighbors say they noticed this graffiti around 5:30 this morning that is when they called police and since then, the city has row moved much of the graffiti from this block you can still see a little bit of what is left behind here. the damage near 21st and

bouvier streets. here's what the neighbors woke up. black spraint saying it is the right to rebel what appears molotov cocktail on the walls and sidewalks of the 2100 block of bouvier street. also a quote kill a cop save a live spray painted on one of the walls here. this morning city workers power washed or painted over much of the vandalism in this neighborhood. as investigators from the south detective division went door to door interviewing those that were affected. and searching for possible suspects. all the while those that live on this block say this vandalism has rock their normally quiet community. >> i've been here for 70 years. my concern is the statement that says kill a cop, save a life. like what are you thinking? i mean one thing to put graffiti up there but how serious on statement? i've been here 35 years. night street. all of a sudden you get this. >> reporter: now detectives still canvassing this neighborhood this afternoon

searching for any possible surveillance video. so far we're told they have not found any. we're live here in south philadelphia, i'm greg argos cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> thank you greg. meanwhile in other news this noon 16 year old girl recovering in the hospital after police say shun opened fire on a group of teenagers in southwest philadelphia overnight. only "eyewitness news" reporter trang do spoke witness victim's mother this morning about the violence that almost took her daughter's life. >> i'm just hurt right now. i don't know -- i don't know. this is goss to stop. >> reporter: tears down to you at a weren't today davis' face after she finds out her 1684 old daughter diamond whitaker had been shot multiple times while hanging outside of friend's house in southwest philadelphia. >> i was just asking everybody what happened. my daughter got shot. >> reporter: it happen just after midnight on the 5900 block of springfield avenue. police say a small group of teenagers were gathered on the front steps of a home after a

barbecue. when someone opened fire oh and them. >> it appears that the shots were intentionally fired at this group. not only was this female struck multiple times, two bullets entered a window of a house right where she was standing. >> reporter: no one else was hit but officers rush diamond to penn presbyterian hospital with gunshot wounds to her arms, legs and chest. she is expected to survive. >> when they went across her chest they just missed it, like, it could have killed my child. she said the whole time she's in the back of the cop car she thought she was going to die. >> reporter: davis and her daughter lives in johnstown and in the city visiting family and friends. she says she can't imagine why anyone would target group of teenaged girls. >> can you please just turn yourself in. like, you hit an innocent child. for to apparent reason at all. that's all -- just turn yourself in. report roar police do not have a description of the shooter. but they're hoping surveillance

cameras in the neighborhood will help with that. meanwhile diamond is slated for surgery later today. from penn presbyterian hospital, i'm trang do, cbs cbs3 cbs3 "eys news". >> deadly train accident in washington, d.c. had a ripple effect across the northeast corridor this morning. when service was temporarily suspended between philadelphia and washington. two railroad employees were killed when they were hit by an amtrak train that was approaching a station in the capitol. 91 of the train's passengers were injured. many travelers using 30th street station were left stranded due to the canceled service. >> well, it's leaving me very confused. um i look at a board where i see everything canceled. so i think i'm a little flustered right now, and i don't know what my next option is. >> trains are now resuming service but officials say they are operating at restricted speeds and customers should expect delays to continue. officials continue to investigate that accident. a community coming together to remember a woman murdered in a north philadelphia park. a vigil set for 5:00 tonight at

dobbins high school that's 21st and lehigh avenue in memory of debra gulliver the 33 year old was walking home saturday morning when she was stabbed 12 times in rayburn park. friends say she used the park as a short cut to get to her house. police are offering a $20,000 reward for help in finding her killer. police say man was struck and killed while crossing roosevelt boulevard in olney overnight. he was not using the crosswalk. investigators tell "eyewitness news" the 36-year-old victim was hit by two vehicles why wyoming around 12:00 their this morning. the drivers of both vehicles stayed at the scene. police interviewed eyewitnesses. but say it app% to be an accident. testimony resumes for day seven in the federal corruption child trial of philadelphia district attorney seth williams among those called to testify was the executive director of williams political action committee. prosecutors allege that williams ran up charges through his campaign for perm use. our joe holden is in the courtroom and will break down

all of today's testimony beginning on "eyewitness news" at 5:00. well, republican senators are trying to regroup and see if they can find a compromise that will win enough support to pass their health care plan, repealing and replacing the affordable care act. senate majority leader mitch mcconnell delayed vote yesterday on the current plan after more republican senators came out against it. at least 12 gop senators have said they have reservations about some parts of proposal. >> it's difficult for mow to see how any tinkering is going to satisfy my fundamental and deep concerns about the impact of the bill. >> now, without compromise among republicans, senator mcconnell warned they'll be forced to work with the democrats. well, one of the many wildfires raging in the west right now has destroyed the home of big bang theory star johnny, the 42 year old actor was not at home when flames from the so-call hill fire swept across

his ranch in st. louie a business bow county california 200 miles outside of los angel angeles. a statement he thanked firefighters as they worked to contain the wildfires. he plays dr. leonard huff instead on the hit cbs show. the owner of that enormous lobster found in luggage by boston airport agents says she's offended after seeing the photo that went viral. lisa fine man owns a connecticut fish market. she packed the lobster in cooler with other lobsters for a customer in georgia. tsa agent posted a photo sunday of the 20 pounder on instagram. fine man says the way the agent hell the lobster could have snapped off a claw. the agency has not responded to a request for comment. well, it's a wild new way to get vaccinated instead of a large needle a patch is used instead. i'll explain coming up next. plus, the obesity epp depth nick is spreading and now includes our pets. but how can you tell if your furry friend is gaining too much weight? we'll have the warning signs that you should watch out

well the city of philadelphia gearing up friend peps day as part of the welcome america festivities new photo exhibit on display at philadelphia international airport. it re recognizes philadelphia's designation as the nation's first world heritage city. mayor jim kenney and other local leaders were on hand for a special ceremony. so good news or bad news? >> depends how you look at it really. today is absolutely gorgeous. it is so so pleasant outside it's about to get very hot. very steamy, however. >> okay. >> and that coincides with the holiday weekend for lot of people. >> it's summer. >> exactly.

>> i'm trying to be flexible here katie. >> i know. we got to get to you yoga class. really is so so pleasant outsi outside. again if you haven't had chance to get out there, just walk around the block at least. it's such gorgeous day to be outside and actually want to show you video right now. this is drone video if we can head to it there we go of some rowers on the schuylkill river actually shot by one of the folks from our sister radio station dan miller he work in the traffic department over there and he apparently is also very good drone operator. look at this. gorgeous view. i love drone footage you don't get this kind of stuff from any other kind of camera view on the ground. this is absolutely beautiful start to the morning here. we gorgeous sunrise and now this beautiful video as the day progresses. you might imagine storm scan3 completely empty. sure enough we've had a couple of patchy clouds along it way but that's been it when you look much wider zoom on the radar, there's little bit of activity to track here latest storm system that becomes our next

headache will sluggishly head east and by the time it reaches us we're already hitting the weekend. so high pressure is currently the story. it's anchored overhead high pressure means singing air subsiding airs it's a sinking virtually don't have any cloud cover out there. that's basically what we're finding out there at the moment it also keeps the cool air mass and dry air in place. so it is just so darn comfortable out sigh. mid 70s region wide and you'll see the where the core of that milder warmer air is in place and that's obviously off to the southwest with this time is going to start to nudge our way as the wind flow shifts. how do the tropics looking. worth a mention. there's not a heck of a lot going on out there. you'll notice the frontal boundary that came through early yesterday morning and woke you up with thunderstorms, that's still pushing out to sea at this point. no other activity of note however in the tropics right now. that should change we'll let you know. always worth checking in once awhile. dew points are just believablely low right now for late june standards, usually find them at least into the upper 50s and

they are well below that here in philadelphia at the airport dew point is 43. this is one of the best hair days you can possibly hope for because that wind is also so light meanwhile as we take a look forward, comfort index starts to creep us on us the discomfort index starts to creep up by friday starting that feel more steamy out there. the dew points start to claim because of that southerly flow beginning to pick up. outside we go to the boardwalk plaza. i'm not shocked by this. what a perfect beach day. if you're lucky enough to have the afternoon off, why not? take a trip down the ac expressway and get on out to one of these beautiful spots. or maybe you're poconos fan beautiful shot of lake wallenpaupack. we've got to get a shot of lake nockamixon is our pocono camera network i want to see you note by in your kayak and give a sweet shout out. i don't see anybody out. haven't seen any boats in this particular view that's one of the nice big lakes up in the poconos. a lot of people vacation up that

way. the rest of the at noon looks just gorgeous. how many ways can you possibly say this? practical perfect afternoon. 81 degrees in that sunshine. it looks just beautiful. later on tonight we'll drop it down to a comfortable 64 degrees. in the quiet as chilly if i can say chill until late june that is as this morning was. it is very comfortable. humidity remains nice and low. looking forward in the "eyewitness weather" seven day, here we go. starting to heat up. three day straight of 90 or above, friday, saturday, sunday watching for ice layed or scattered showers along the way. and then by tuesday of course fourth of july the call right now jim is upper 80s and some sunshine. >> i can handle isolated. >> there you go. >> okay. i'm flexible. [ laughter ] >> providing homes for our military heroes. meisha joins now with today's love it. >> well, taking care of our selves and loved ones is an important priority but what do we do with our extra, extra time, extra money, extra anything? in today's love it we're meeting a man blessed with little extra in retirement.

so he took his passion for real estate and built a port toll yo strictly for our veterans. take look. john gremlin of indiana grew his retirement in order to give back to veterans in need. his goal was to direct. he want to do provide a home for vet that is were currently homeless. >> we use self directeddism ra as an entity to own the properties. so it's not only an invest many for me but it's also an investment in the people that we house. >> john didn't want to rent out for the sake of making money he wanted to make a difference he contacted local veteran agencies, told them about his plan to put homeless vets in homes, and the support and gratitude quickly came. one homeless vet lynette hatcher had been homeless for ten years. >> had always been me and my children, um, in and out of homeless shelters and stuff like that. um, but i never had to live by myself. >> reporter: lou miller is another vet who with the help of gremlin's program has now had his own place for the past three months. >> you know when you at a

ballgame and stand up with your hand over your heart and you get that warm feeling when they're playing god bless of america that's the kind of feeling that gives me when john stands up and helps the vets. >> what does john say. >> all of them is served time in the military and it's a way i can give back to them. >> it is a way you can give back indeed. mr. gremlin says if we can look out for the less fortunate if we have the capability to do so then we have a responsibility to humanity to do just that. john is currently housing 23 once homeless veterans. >> i love that. >> it's interesting someone may watch that story and think of doing the same thing. >> yes. that's exactly what i was thin thinking when i saw that. i was thinking it's funny how one little pebble thrown in sends a ripple everybody and it can touch so many people. >> absolutely. >> wonderful service. >> it doesn't matter what we have to give, even just a little bit of our time can work wonders in the lives of others. so way to go, john. >> well, if you've got any positive or inspirational story
