route. >> has dean ever sent him back saying, "not today?" >> never. captioning sponsored by cbs this is the "cbs evening news." >> mason: good evening, i'm anthony mason. a doctor who had been fired from a hospital in new york went back today wearing a white lab coat to height an assault rifle-- hide an assault rifle. then he began shooting. when it was over at least one victim was drkd several wounded. the shooter took his own life. don dahler is at the hospital in the bronx. >> there's an active shooter at this time. units, be advised, confirmed shots fired. >> reporter: it was just before 3:00 p.m. inside bronx lebanon hospital when gunshots rang out on the 16th floor. dr. henry bella, a former doctor at the hospital, pulled an assault rifle from under his white lab coat and opened fire. the gunman shot seven people, killing at least one female doctor before police say he shot and killed himself. >> i saw blood on the floor.

i saw a doctor with blood on his hands. >> reporter: gonzalo coraso worked on the carding on wing on the 12th floor. >> i didn't hear any gunshots. all i heard was a doctor saying, "help, help." that's when i saw police came and everybody-- everybody just went to the room. i just went to a room and i locked myself in a room. >> this guy is shot in the stomach area. >> reporter: the gunman shot seven people, killing at least one female doctor, before police say he shot and killed himself. gary tremble received a frantic phone call from his fiance who worked as a patient aide and was barricaded in a hospital room on the fourth floor. >> i told her just, "stay low. whatever you're doing right now, just do it, but just don't make too much noise." >> reporter: bellow set himself on fire before shooting himself. he had been fired recently from the hospital for harassing another employee. anthony, we're told that three of the victims were doctors and that some of them are fighting

for their lives. >> mason: don dahler at the scene in the bronx. a major southern california freeway known for its bumper had-to-bumper traffic jams turned into a crash landing for a small plane today. john blackstone is at the scene in santa ana, about 35 miles south of los angeles. >> 295, may day! may day! >> reporter: that frantic call was made just seconds before this cessna burst into flames, crashing on to a crowded southern california highway. >> the aircraft is on the freeway. >> reporter: the of kai hsien shot this video after seeing the plane wobble on approach to john wayne airport. it crashed right in front of her. >> the flames they shot up hundreds of feet in the air. there was so much smoke coming out, i smawt for sure everybody on the plane would have died. >> reporter: somehow both people on the plane survived. they had just taken off when the

pilot radioed there was trouble. >> 297, i lost my right engine. i can make it back to the airport? >> reporter: he fell short. the runway was just a few few hundred feet from 405, the busiest freeway in the world. remarkably, nobody was hurt on the ground. >> i was struck by this cessna that spun around, saw flames all around us, checked my passenger, made sure he was okay. and gave each other a hug that we were-- that we were still alive. >> reporter: the plane has been on the freeway here for hours to be inspected by f.a.a. investigators. incredibly, no one on the ground was seriously injured. but, anthony, there's still a travelers' nightmare here-- a major freeway block and the empty on a freud holiday getaway. >> mason: john blackstone, thanks, john. as for that getaway, aaa spz estimateaise record 44.2 million

the "national enquirer." here's major garrett. >> mr. president, do you regrept the tweet that you sent about mika brzezinski? >> reporter: the president ignored a question today about his escalating feud with msnbc anchors mika brzezinski and joe scarborough. in a "the washington post" op-ed headlined, "donald trump is not well," the two wrote that white house aides tried to intimidate them with a negative story in the "national inquirer." >> they said if you call the president up and you apologize for your coverage, then he will pick up the phone and basically spike the story. >> reporter: mr. trump is longtime friends with david pecker, c.e.o. of american media, that publishes the tabloid. in response to the allegation, the president tweeted it was scarborough who called him to stop the article. "i said no." sources tell cbs news scarborough called the president's son-in-law, jared kushner, in april, about a

coming "inquirer" story. at some point in that conversation, kushner suggested an apology from scarborough might prompt the president to intervene. through a spokesman the "enquirer" said: >> this was a magazine that, frankly, in many respects, should be very respected. >> reporter: during the campaign, mr. trump praised the "national enquirer" and cited its articles about political rivals, especially senator ted cruz of texas. the tabloid had publish aid picture it claimed showed cruz's father was kennedy assassin, lee harvey oswald. >> all i did was point out the fact on the cover of the "national enquirer" there was a picture of him and crazy lee harvey oswald having breakfast. now, ted never denied that it was his father. >> reporter: there is no evidence cruz's father knew or met oswald. anthony, there is evidence this

twitter spat has taken a toll here and on capitol hill, where the president's health care agenda is in dangerous limbo and a distracted white house groaps for a new political strategy. >> mason: major garrett at the white house. thank you, major. this week, a presidential commission began its investigation of possible election fraud by asking states to turn over a slew of voter information. nancy cordes reports the effort immediately ran into trouble. >> this is an outrageous violation of citizens' privacy rights. >> reporter: virginia governor terry mcauliffe told cbs news today his statelet not hand over sensitive voter files to the white house. mcauliffe joins officials from more than 20 states who say they can't or won't comply with this week's request for voter roll data, including addresses, dates of birth, political party, and even voter history, elections voted in from 2006 onward.

the request came from commission on election integrity, established after president trump insisted three million to five million voted illegally. >> you have people that are registered who are dead, who are illegals, who are in two states. >> reporter: g.o.p. leaders have rejected his claim. >> i have seen no evidence to that effect. >> reporter: and today new york's democratic governor andrew cuomo announced, "we will not, complying with this request. new york refuses to perpetuate the myth that voter fraud played a role in our election." utah's governor said, "we will not share any protected data with the commission." even the vice president's home state announced today that "indiana law doesn't permit the secretary of state to provide the personal information requested." the new commission is led by kansas secretary of state kris kobach, a longtime crusader against voter fraud. he says he only wants the data in order to "fully analyze

vulnerabilities and issues related to voter registration and voting." democrats suspect there's more to it. >> we will not let donald trump and his right-wing extremists use this as some covert plan to get data to make it harder for people to vote. we won't stand for it. >> reporter: a number of states say they want to help, and they'll provide any data they can legally share. but this afternoon, mississippi's secretary of state, a republican, called it a violation of voters' privacy, and said the commission can "go jump in the gulf of mexico. mississippi is a great state to launch from." anthony. >> mason: nancy cordes, thank,sinance see. today at the white house, president trump stood with south korea's president moon, on opposition to the north's nuclear program. on another, mr. trump demanded a renegotiation of a 2012 trade deal. the u.s. had a $17 billion trade deficit with south korea last year. the president is also said to be

considering a tariff of up to 20% on imported steel. the white house has accused china of dumping cheap steel in the u.s. comert secretary wilbur ross is a key supporter of the tariff, but some members of congress worry that could set off a global strayed war and raise prices in this country. police in the philadelphia suburb of west gauchan are investigating the murder of an 18-year-old girl this week in an apparent road rage attack. jim axelrod is following this. >> reporter: outside philadelphia this afternoon, police held up this wanted poster, a drawing of the man driving this red pickup truck who allegedly shot and killed this 18-year-old recent high school graduate bianca roberson, in what appeared to be a traffic dispute. thomas hogan is the chester county, pennsylvania, district attorney. >> a man in a red pickup truck pulled out a gun and shot her in the head, killing her. this is now a murder case.

>> reporter: roberson and the man were merging into a single lane on a road in the town of west gauchan, 25 miles west of philadelphia. west gauchan chief of police joseph gleason. >> reporter: roberson's car veered off the road into a tree. she had planned to start at jacksonville university in august. today, her parents spoke to reporters. >> she was a good girl. loved by many. never bothered anybody. she was just a sweet girl. >> reporter: the driver is described as a man of medium build, 30-40 years old, with blond or light-brown hair. the truck is described as a red faded pickup. >> turn yourself in. please, you took my life. you devastated this family. she was our life. >> mason: at a late afternoon news conference, police said
