this is the "cbs evening news." >> mason: good evening. i'm anthony mason. we begin with breaking news. an american soldier on active duty has been arrested in hawaii on terrorism charges. the f.b.i. accuses 34-year-old the soldier of providing material support to isis. cbs news justice reporter paula reid is following the developing story. paula? >> reporter: u.s. officials say this american soldier swore allegiance to isis and offered to provide the terror group with military documents and military training. the investigation started more than a year ago and included the f.b.i. and the u.s. army. now, kang is active duty and stationed in hawaii. he was arrested by an f.b.i. swat team saturday night. his service record indicates that he was deployed to afghanistan in 2013 and iraq in 2011. he was highly decorated. according to officials, he was acting alone, but it is not known whether or not he made contact with the terror group. officials say the public was never at risk. now, he is expected to appear in

federal court this afternoon in hawaii. so far the army has had no comment. anthony? >> mason: paula reid with the breaking news. thanks, paula. donald trump,, jr., has lord up. a new york defense attorney confirmed today he's been hired to represent the president's son in the investigations of russian meddling in the u.s. election and whether anyone in the trump campaign was involved. this follows trump, jr.'s, admission that during the campaign he talked with a russian attorney at a meeting also attended by brother-in-law jared kushner and campaign chairman paul manafort. jeff pegues begins our coverage. >> reporter: the meeting occurred last year on june 9th at trump tower. russian lawyer natalia veselnitskaya spoke with donald trump, jr., jared kushner, the president's son-in-law, and campaign chairman paul manafort. trump, jr., said that she was offering potentially damaging information about democratic nominee hillary clinton. just days later, the democratic

national committee would reveal its e-mails had been stolen by russian hackers. in a statement released yesterday, the president's son said it soon became clear that veselnitskaya had no meaningful information about clinton, and that she changed subjects to a russian ban on adoptions and u.s. sanctions. but that explanation was different from one a day earlier when trump said the meet-and-greet was introductory. he did not mention the promise of information about clinton. the meeting was arraigned by a music publicist who represents russian pop star. trump once appeared in one of his music videos. >> you're fired. >> reporter: his father is a russian billionaire oligarch, who is not only connected to russian president vladimir putin -- >> moscow is going to get hotter. >> reporter: -- but also helped bring president trump's 2013 miss universe pageant to moscow. >> there is an unholy alliance between the oligarch, the
6:34 pm
organized criminal element and the government. >> reporter: chris swecker is with f.b.i. >> it's not illegal, but you have to be careful about meeting with them because you could be a dupe or they could be trying the use you. they always have an agenda. >> reporter: the president's son is the fourth campaign trump associate to admit with previously unknown contacts with russian nationals. he joins michael flynn, attorney general jeff sessions, and jared kushner. as recently as february, the president had denied that there were any russian contacts during the election. >> no, nobody that i know of. >> reporter: this new revelation, however, has caught the attention of congress. mark warner is the top democrat on the senate intelligence committee. >> this is first time the public has seen clear evidence that senior level officials in the trump campaign met with potentially the agent of a foreign government to try to obtain information that would discredit hillary clinton. >> mason:. >> reporter: today the white

house said the president did not know about the june 2016 meeting, although he was in new york on the same day. spokeswoman sarah huckabee sanders. >> there was simply no collusion that they keep trying the create that there was. >> reporter: donald trump, jr., defended himself on twitter today, saying among other things, that the meeting went nowhere, but he had to listen. he's now hired an attorney and says he is willing to cooperate with congressional investigations. anthony? jeff pegues, thanks. ranking democrat mark warner says the senate intelligence committee wants to talk to trump, jr., and anyone else involved with that meeting. chief white house correspondent major garrett has been looking into trump family ties. >> don and eric are going to be running the company. they are going to be running it in a very professional manner. they're not going to discuss it with me. >> reporter: nine days before he was inaugurated, president-elect trump promised
6:36 pm
the country a wall of separation between business and politics, but mr. trump's eldest son, don, jr., has served as one of his father's most aggressive defenders on twitter and television. >> this has been a ten-month witch-hunt. >> reporter: the president's other son, eric, told forbes in march that he discusses the family business with the president, specifically profitability report and stuff like that. the next month eric told "forbes" "nepotism is kind of factor of life." eric said this in june about his father's critics. >> i have never seen hatred like this. to me they're not even people. >> i try the stay out of politics. >> reporter: while don and eric run the business, the president's daughter ivanka has been named senior white house adviser. this weekend at the g-20 president, she briefly took the president's seat next to the chinese president when mr. trump stepped away. in the face of criticism, the president today tweeted, "if chelsea clinton were asked to hold a seat for her mother, the fake news would say, chelsea for
6:37 pm
prez." clinton responded, "it would never have occurred to my mother or my father to ask me." in april, ivanka answered critics who called her complicit with harmful administration policies. >> i don't know what it means to be complicit. you know, i hope time will prove that i have done a good job. >> reporter: ivanka's husband, jared kushner, is also a senior adviser with an extensive international and domestic portfolio. anthony, taken together the son, the daughter, and son-in-law give the appearance of a white house that is, at least partially, family business. >> mason: major, we heard sarah huckabee sanders, the president's deputy press secretary, stay russia story is a creation of his opponents, but the trump team's story on this seems to keep changing. >> reporter: right. the white house wants the say this story has always been about collusion, and that's certainly been the most poe tent and politically charged question,
6:38 pm
but it didn't start that way. the question started very simply: were there ever any contacts with russians? blanket denials during the transition and early parts of this administration. denials that have evaporated under investigatory and journalistic distress and duress. the white house has the hen confirmed them subsequently in an act it regards as transparent and also calls all the context benign. one problem with that: many of the people who have had those contacts have since obtained defense counsel. >> mason: major, both parties try to dig up dirt on their opponents. why would this be different? >> reporter: because most of that is done inside the united states, not from a foreign agent or someone who might be representing a foreign government. that's problem number one. problem number two is our colleague jeff pegues pointed out, shortly after this june 9th meeting with don, jr., and others, hacked e-mails began to appear, from goosifer2.0 and
6:39 pm
wikileaks, all adding speculation to what that meeting was about and what it might have led. to. >> mason: major garrett at the white house, thanks, major. senators returned to capitol hill today after a holiday recess, and so did protesters. dozens who oppose the obamacare replacement plan swarmed the offices of several republicans. at least 80 were arrested. ten senate republicans say they cannot support the current version of the bill. many others remain non-committal. fire crews are being stretched thin in the west. more than 60 large fires are burning tonight, 14 in california where more than 8,000 people have fled their homes. in santa barbara county, at least 20 homes have burned. mireya villarreal is there. >> reporter: the whittier fire was burning on both sides of the highway. time-lapse video shows how quickly the flames moved through the dry, overgrown brush. the fire ripped through here in matter of minutes. it consumed several boats,
6:40 pm
destroyed the shed that was standing right here, and it threatened campers that were right down the road. >> they had a moment's notice to get up and evacuate. >> reporter: thousands in the area were forced to leave. a busy campground turn entered a ghost town. fire captain. >> dave:. dave zaniboni. if they didn't evacuate as quickly as they did, could this have been a deadly situation? >> absolutely. we had a near miss with those children stuck above the fire. >> reporter: near than 80 campers were surrounded by fire. incident commander mark von tillow led the effort. >> i'd say we tried four, five, six times during the day. >> reporter: you got these kids out safe, and yet it still makes you choke up a little bit. >> yes. >> reporter: why? >> probably because of my own kids. it could have been them. >> reporter: 6,000 firefighters are battling more than a dozen major fires around the state. in northern california, thousands of homes and structures were threatened by
6:41 pm
the wall fire, prompting a state of emergency order by the governor. there have been no deaths in any of these fires, but the destruction is clear. cooler temperatures should help the crews get handle on these fires, but as of right now, they say rugged terrain and limited access to these fires are still their biggest obstacle. anthony? >> mason: mireya villarreal at the scene of devastation, thanks. frantic text messages from members of a penn state fraternity were revealed today at a preliminary hearing in the hazing death of a young pledge. a judge is hearing evidence to determine whether the fraternity brothers should stand trial. jericka duncan is following the case. >> shame on you boys, shame! >> reporter: expressionless and quiet, 16 members of beta theta pi walked past crowds as they entered a pennsylvania courthouse. the charges against the young men stem from the february death of penn state university sophomore timothy piazza and
6:42 pm
vary from involuntary manslaughter to wreck legs endangerment. today's hearing focused on deleted text messages, former fraternity president brendan young, who faces some of the most serious charge, texted his girlfriend after piazza was taken to the hospital. young said, "i don't think you fully comprehend the situation. he looked expletive dead. at the end of the day, i am accountable for it all. i will be the one going to court, paying for an attorney, and maybe put in jail." another text message from pledge master daniel casey to his girlfriend reveals the level of concern. casey said, "we are expletive, like beyond expletive. it's over. i don't want to go to jail for this." his girlfriend replied, "make sure no one says anything." >> we're confident we're ready to go. >> reporter: in an intense encounter in court today, several defense attorneys accused the district attorney, stacy parks miller, of cherry picking messages in parts of the surveillance video shown last
6:43 pm
month in court. theodore simon represents luke visser. >> all the tapes have not been played, and i think if they were, there would be a more accurate representation of what happened or didn't happen. >> reporter: only two defense attorneys today were able to question the only witness who took the stand. that was a detective. anthony, the purpose of this preliminary hearing is for a judge to decide whether or not there's enough evidence for this case to go to trial. >> mason: jericka duncan, thanks. today iraq's prime minister, haider al abadi, declared victory over isis in mosul, the country's second largest city, once home to two million people. isis captured mosul three years ago. the fight to liberate it began last october. holly williams has covered the iraq war extensively. she's in istanbul, turkey. holly, does this mean mosul is now rid of isis? >> reporter: no, anthony, not entirely. there were reports today of ongoing heavy clashes in mosul, and it could take weeks or even
6:44 pm
months to fully clear the city. and by "clear," i mean ridding mosul, not just of any isis fighters that are still holding out, but of booby-trapped houses, of roadside bombs, and of the networks of tunnels that have been found in every town and city that has been retaken from isis. i also think we can expect that isis may have left behind sleeper cells in mosul that will try to attack iraqi security forces and civilians. >> mason: holly, you were recently in raqqa in syria, which is the de facto isis capital. what's the status of the fighting there? >> reporter: well, anthony, u.s.-backed syrian forces now have isis surrounded in raqqa. but when we were there on the outskirts of the city just over a week ago, those u.s.-backed forces looked to us to be overstretched. they seemed to have very few fighters on the front line, and indeed at around the same time, isis apparently retook neighborhood from them. so the fight for raqqa may be just as challenging as mosul,
6:45 pm
even though the city is a fraction of the size. >> mason: holly williams in istanbul tonight. thank you, holly. still ahead on the "cbs evening news," a close call at the airport in san francisco. and a star is born at a coldplay concert. i needed something more to help control my type 2 diabetes. my a1c wasn't were it needed to be. so i liked when my doctor told me that i may reach my blood sugar and a1c goals by activating what's within me with once-weekly trulicity. trulicity is not insulin. it helps activate my body to do what it's suppose to do, release its own insulin. i take it once a week, and it works 24/7.

6:48 pm
from toronto. the airbus a-320 was cleared to land on runway 28 right in san francisco international, but instead lined up for the taxiway that parallels the runway. there were four other airliners on that taxiway waiting to take off. air traffic control audio captured what happened next. >> i just want to say, lights on the runway there. >> 759, confirmed, clear to land. there is no one there but you. >> where's this guy going? he's on the taxiway. >> yeah, i saw that, guys. >> reporter: the f.a.a. is now investigating how close that air canada jet got to the planes on the ground on taxiway c. anthony, air canada says their flight eventually landed safely 68 the airline is also looking into what happened. >> mason: kris van cleve with a close call there. thanks, kris. when we come back, the link

>> mason: a lot of folks in our newsroom perked up when they heard about two new studies linking coffee to a longer life. grounds to call in dr. jon lapook. jon, what do these studies tell us about coffee? >> reporter: anthony, research has suggested coffee may protect people from problems like diabetes and liver disease and might even lead to longer life. these were two large studies, one in europe, and one in the united states. compared with drinking no coffee, people drinking one cup daily had a 12% lower rises of dying. those drinking two to three cups had an 18% lower risk of dying over those 18 years. >> mason: significant difference, jon. why do you think that is? >> coffee has a lot of biologically activated compounds like poly-phenols, that may be able to lower inflammation and improve the way your body processes insulin. it was interesting in this study, there was a protective
6:53 pm
effect that extended to people drinking both regular and decaf. >> mason: we often get reports that this is good for us and a little later not so good. is it going to be contradicted down the road? >> reporter: i can't say it won't be. these studies are very hard to do. you try to account for different variables. for example, people who drink more coffee tend to smoke more cigarettes. you have to correct for that. and there are side effects like acid reflux and heartburn. it's premature to say let's prescribe coffee for its health benefits, it's nice to know there is increasing evidence that moderate coffee consumption can have a role, can be part of a healthy diet. i can tell you as a doctor, it's noise to say, instead of don't eat, that don't eat this, just enjoy. >> mason: good news, thank you, jon. up next, why just go to a concert when you can be in it?

6:56 pm
i tried to quit with the patch; that didn't work. along with support, chantix (varenicline) is proven to help people quit smoking. for me, chantix worked. it reduced my urge to smoke. compared to the nicotine patch, chantix helped significantly more people quit smoking. when you try to quit smoking, with or without chantix, you may have nicotine withdrawal symptoms. some people had changes in behavior or thinking, aggression, hostility, agitation, depressed mood or suicidal thoughts or actions with chantix. serious side effects may include seizures, new or worse heart or blood vessel problems, sleepwalking or allergic and skin reactions which can be life-threatening. stop chantix and get help right away if you have any of these. tell your healthcare provider if you've had depression or other mental health problems. decrease alcohol use while taking chantix. use caution when driving or operating machinery. the most common side effect is nausea. i'm so proud to be a non-smoker. ask your doctor if chantix is right for you. many insurance plans cover chantix for a low or $0 copay.
