when the sun goes down the family oriented shore town comes alive. good evening i'm jessica dean. >> good evening, i'm ukee washington. live in ocean city. it's been a great day. absolutely great day. the surf, the sand, the sun, fun, it is all here and it will get better tomorrow it's the accident occurred annual nights in venice, people will line the bay front and see the decorated homes and a fantastic boat parade. it gets better, better, every day here. and learning today earlier today, rather, some of the younger sailors in ocean city showed off their decorated boats, kids had a great time. and we saw really creative decorations. all leads up to tomorrow's night in venice, boat parade starts at 6:00 p.m. ocean city is the place to be during the hot summer days and hot summer nights. right now, it's rather cool with a nice breeze coming off the atlantic ocean. we have been in an excessive

heat warning. chelsea is with us. >> reporter: hello there, ukee, we're talking about warm temperatures we're dealing with tonight. and we're dealing with a number across the region checking in in the 80's. with the weather watcher, we are live with the mobile weather watcher right now, and temperatures are checking in in the upper 70's: it's very humid night here dealing with at this point in time. across the delaware valley, temperatures are in the 70's and 80's. it is 84 degrees in philadelphia. 83 in wilmington. 82 in dover. 79 in millville. we're in the upper 70's down the shore in wildwood. as we head to the overnight. it will be warm, you'll need to crank up the air conditioning in philadelphia. 78 degrees for the overnight temperature, partly cloudy skies as we head to tomorrow, we will be monitoring that strong to potentially severe

police arrested a woman accused of leaving her young child alone in a car. chopper 3 over a parking lot in boothwyn. police say the toddler was not in that car long enough to suffer serious injuries, but it is another reminder of the summer heat dangers and natasha brown is live at the art museum with more on the challenges of staying cool over the next few days, natasha? >> reporter: well, it certainly has been a challenge, right now, we can tell you we're feeling a little bit of a warm breeze, i guess we could explain it that way. but the heat certainly been stifling to this point and proving to be dangerous for so many. folks around the city are trying to find any relief from the oppressive heat that grip the region the last couple days, taking a dip in the you fountain along the parkway seemed to do the trick for these, but not everyone is as mobile or can find an escape. the elderly are more susceptible during heat waves like this >> it's dangerous for seniors

with the heat. their bodies may not be telling them, they may have certain ailments that don't do well or are on certain medication >> it raises awareness on heat stress. >> reporter: the corporation for aging set up a heat line for seniors who may need assistance >> we got phone calls yesterday and helped people. but it's increasing. and the second day of heat like this really generates more activity and more problems for people. >> it's not just the elderly that need extra care during extended heat waves. our four-legged friends are also vulnerable. especially dogs like j oda left at the end of a long delaware at the animal rescue in coatsville. an employee noticed him on thursday afternoon, they believe he had been there more than an hour. likely dumped by his owner at a time when the heat index had reached triple digits >> i went up there and there was this black dog, pretty overheated pretty bad in an airline crate, which is a solid plastic crate. we brought him down here, gave

him fluids, gave him water, put him in air conditioning, hosed him off. >> he's still a bit traumatized we understand but he is on the mend getting better. we understand they also put his picture out on facebook hoping someone will come forward to claim him. meantime, the corporation for aging says their heat line actually ended a couple minutes ago at 11:00 but will be reinstated if and when it's necessary. we're live on the art museum steps tonight, natasha brown, cbs3 "eyewitness news." an update to a story we brought you last night. a big fire burning in the wharton state forest in south jersey. in a remote area of the forest in burlington county. started yesterday afternoon. so far, authorities say the flames burned more than 3,000 acres, tonight, the fire is 70% contained. firefighters are battling from both the ground and the air. the effects of that fire are

being felt all the way down the shore. people in brigantine were smelling smoke from the forest fire instead of the salt tea air. the strong smoky smell led enough people to call 911. police fire murder charges against a 21-year-old in the stabbing death of her mother in montgomery county. authorities say elana house hey on the left stabbed her mother, 54 entered annette house seen on the right the police responded to the home in perkiomen township early this morning after house hey called 911. house hey has been arraigned and behind bars tonight. the fall-out continues following a big shake-up at the white house. sean spicer resigned as press secretary after a stormy six months. his tenure was marked with combative exchanges with reporters. the press secretary team struggled to keep up with developments in the russian

investigation, he quit after president trump appointed anthony scaramucci as the new communications director >> i love the president, very loyal to the president and i love the mission that the president has. the president has really good karma. and the world turns back to him. he's a genuinely a wonderful human being and i think if the members of congress get to know him better and get comfortable with him, they're going to let him lead them to the right things for the american people. >> the white house sarah hackabee sanders is replacing as the press secretary. jeff sessions came to philadelphia encouraging local law enforcement to help put an end to is sanctuary cities >> they're providing sanctuaries to criminals. it's sad ends me to say that one of those jurisdictions is philadelphia. this especially sad for the residents of philadelphia, who have been victimized as a result of these policies. >> sessions said violent crime

continues to plague philadelphia. police commissioner roth met with sessions following his speech, mayor kenney, a supporter of sanctuary city policies was not invited to the events. if you want to buy cigarettes in new jersey, you now have to be old enough to buy a drink. today, governor chris christie cited new measure raising the state's smoking age from 19 to 21. the governor said the goal of the legislation is to break the cycle of addiction. new jersey joins hawaii and california as the only states where the smoking age is 21. it's not the summer without taking a trip down the shore. tonight cbs3 summerfest is in ocean city, new jersey. known as america's greatest family resort. our ukee washington is live on the boardwalk tonight and ukee you guys are soaking up all the fun there and there's a lot. >> reporter: jessica, you're so right. we're having a blast. when we come back, the boardwalk at night. there are so many things to do here, including riding a brand

it's been a beautiful evening but definitely been hot across the entire delaware valley and we're in store for a very warm and muggy night. take a look at current temperatures right now across the region. we're checking in in the 70's and 80's. depending on where you listen. it's 84 in philadelphia. 83 in wilmington, 70's at the shore for places like wildwood, it's in the upper 70's here in ocean city. due points are in the 60's and 70's. it is an extremely muggy night out there. 71 is the current due point in philadelphia. 73 in wilmington. very saturated atmosphere and this will set us up for problems as we head into tomorrow. taking a live look at stormscan 3, there's not a whole lot going on across the delaware valley. we're dealing with some cloud cover. we'll zoom out and you look up to our north and west. and that is our next storm system taking shape and that is going to be the system that brings us problems as we head into your saturday. we can see a morning downpour to our south, otherwise, we're

looking for late day thunderstorms, some could be strong to severe, the main time will be 5:00 till around 1:00 a.m. let's track this on our future weather. starting off where we can see heavy downpours for areas south and east of philadelphia. fast forward as we head to the afternoon, things look quiet around the noon lunch time and ramp back up into the afternoon and evening, we'll basically feel a wall of rain heading towards philadelphia points north and this could bring strong to severe weather we're going to be watching this carefully as it develops heading into tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow evening. strong severe storms, the prediction center has us under the slight risk category for severe weather. our main threats will be damaging winds and also hail. we'll also see very heavy downpours and lightening and we'll even have the risk for an isolated tornado something to keep a close eye on. down the shore, temperatures on the sand. the risk for an afternoon

thunderstorm could be strong, the water temperature refreshing around 78. as we head to tomorrow, some sunshine, we will have the risk for strong to severe thunderstorms with high temperature around 93. the good news is looking at your seven-day forecast, we will find relief from the heat. it's going to be rather hot into monday but by tuesday, finally back in the 80's. 85 degrees with sunshine, and wednesday is looking fantastic as well. with a high temperature around 84. much better weather is heading our way. we have to get through the risk for strong to severe thunderstorms this weekend and we'll be tracking those in the weather center, sending it back to you. >> thank you so much. don bell is up next with sports. football and eagles safety turned pizza man. we'll tell you what malcomb jenkins is up to. plus the phils open a ten-game home stand see if they can make it throw in a row against the brewers. sports coming up next.
