>> ♪ >> live from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia, this is cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> tonight at 6 o'clock flooding all over southern new jersey following a storm that that dropped several inches of rain. how shore towns are managing the crowds as the water slowly starts to recede. good evening, everyone, i'm natasha brown. thank you so much for joining

us. streets are looking like rivers in several shore towns. ocean city is one of the hardest hit areas and some folks did not let the flooding ruin their weekend plans and they paddled right through it. we get more from "eyewitness news" reporter henry rosoff. >> reporter: when streets turned to streams. >> i just turned around. >> reporter: kayaks replace cars and you hear things like. >> we usually bring it to the beach. we thought it was a nice day to travel down the streets of ocean city. >> reporter: the flooding along haven avenue and other streets began last night. >> you could hear the winds and all the rain and then we woke up at life 5 o'clock in the morning and we looked out and the streets were flooded. >> just be careful you don't fall in guys, okay. >> reporter: by the time carol arrived with her grandchildren this morning. >> go this way so grandmom can see you. >> reporter: it was all over. the family gave some thought to skipping this shore trip because of the weather but the kids insisted. >> i'm glad we did because this is probably more fun than going to the beach. [laughter]

>> reporter: though to the full time residents perched on their porches, this is not a picture perfect day. look no further than the few flood covered cars and consider. >> it's really gross. i mean it's all coming up from the sewer system. >> reporter: amidst the flooded streets you could see the signs of construction designed to improve the flooding situation long term. neighbors say there's a long way to go with that. in ocean city, henry rosoff cbs "eyewitness news." >> well, the weather did keep many people up last night watching as the water continued to rise. this is what one "eyewitness news" viewer captured on his block in avalon and while much of the water did begin to recede this morning it was quite a shocking sight. meteorologist chelsea ingram says the worst is pretty much behind us now. what do we have to look forward tour in terms of drying out. >> definitely drier weather heading our way. take a look at some of these doppler estimates. you can see the areas hit the

hardest. a lot of our shore towns and cape may county atlantic county and then also into portions of central and southern delaware and into maryland. we in that fact had record rainfall in atlantic city at the atlantic city airport. 5.41-inches, that beats the old record of 2.21 set back in the 1800s. you can see the worst real is behind us. we just have a couple straggling showers left over but this storm is pulling out to sea. some of our stragglers in portions of southern new jersey and also into new castle county in delaware, this is going to be winding down as we head into the next couple of hours but we have cool downed behind this storm with temperatures in the 70's. 77 degrees in philadelphia, 72 in wilmington. other than a shower, a stray shower really south and east later on this evening we're going to be dealing with gradual clearing as we head into about 10:00 p.m. and midnight. temperatures eventually making it into the upper 60's. by midnight it will get cooler overnight. a nice stretch of weather is heading our way. details in your full forecast coming up. >> chelsea thanks. we'll see you soon. police say a man was

stabbed to death inside a homeless shelter in the spring garden neighborhood. this happened inside the sunday breakfast mission on the 300 block of 13th street just after 9:30 this morning. police took one person into custody. authorities also say detectives recovered a weapon at the scene. so far there is no word on what led to the stabbing. and the family of a little girl is in mourning tonight following a deadly house fire in camden, new jersey. flames ripped through a row house late friday evening killing that child and forcing truce crews to battle the flames through the night. "eyewitness news" reporter anita oh caught up with family members who are still in disbelief. >> she's gone. i can't believe it after a two alarm blaze through a row home melvin perry is mourning the loss of his niece four-year-old laiyannie williams affectionately known as taco. >> everybody knew her around here. she was one of those kids that was bubbly and fun just wanted to enjoy life, you know, and

life was taken away from her too soon. >> reporter: perry says he was sleeping inside the twin row home in the 12 and how block of morton street when he awoke to flames and smoke around let me::friday night. he said he and his wife tried desperately to get five children to safety. >> i think everybody was in the back room sleep. she brought them to the middle room. >> reporter: other neighbors tell "eyewitness news" they helped catch three girls and one boy from below but the four-year-old girl never made it out. >> lost everything, you know, just trying to take it all in. don't seem real right now. >> reporter: fire officials say the blaze began in the first floor living room and spread quickly. they don't believe that it was suspicious. as you can see there is still extensive damage to this home from shattered windows to debris. camden fire chief michael harper reports the home did have working smoke alarms but adds the flames were so intense they had to call for extra resources. >> it was chaotic when the companies arrived. it was a lot of people out here. they had to do a lot of things

to get in operation. >> reporter: at this point the cause of the fire is still under investigation. in camden, anita oh, cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> well, authorities say the owners of three malnourished horses in perkasie are facing animal cruelty charges. this is one of the horses the bucks county spca removed from the property on the 600 block of sweetbriar road on friday. charges are pending against billy penna and michelle hawkins penna. >> reporter: president trump meantime is back on social media this saturday and he is not holding back his disappointment with senate republicans. it comes just after the failure of the latest attempt to repeal and replace the affordable care act. cbs news correspondent brooks silva-braga has more. >> reporter: president trump wants congress to get healthcare reform another try. and let the republican senators are total quitters repeal and replace is not dead he tweeted.

demand another vote before voting on any other bill. he also called on the senate to abolish the 60 vote filibuster rule for passing bills. republicans in the senate will never win if they don't go to a 51 vote majority now he wrote. they look like fools reason just waisting time. trump soon pushed his agenda with the help of a new chief of staff. >> i think actually going a different direction hitting a reset button is a good thing. >> reporter: reince preibus is out. homeland security secretary general john kelly is in. >> priebus made rookie mistake after rookie mistake. >> reporter: author chris whip pell studied presidential chiefs of staff he says priebus didn't have enough authority to control white house personnel or tell the president hard truths but he did have experience with congress on capitol hill. >> now, kelly doesn't really know the hill. generals have not done well in this position. >> reporter: priebus says he'll stay on for two weeks to help kelly with the transition. white house also signaled the president will sign a new

package of russian sanctions congress passed this week. brooks silva-braga for cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> well, the u.s. and south korea conducted a live fire joint exercise today hours after north korea launched an they were continental ballistic missile. the missiles were fired into territorial waters off of south korea's east coast. south korea is working now with the u.s. to install an advanced american missile defense system. they are concerned about the growing missile threat from north korea. >> our lives readiness and ability to fight together when called upon to achieve is achieved through frequent realistic combined training like today's activities. >> yesterday north korea test fired its second intercontinental ballistic missile. it landed off the coast of japan. and authorities say they foiled a terrorism plot in sydney, australia today. police arrested four men during raids across the city. it appears one of the suspects was injured as he was taken

tesla model three cars on the road. the lucky drivers are all employees of the company. the car starts at $35,000 which is half the cost of tesla's previous model. tesla says they already have about 500,000 people worldwide who have paid a thousand dollars just to reserve a car. and this pile of melted rubble used to be a ferrari one hour after buying this vehicle in south yorkshire the unidentified driver lost control causing the car to go airborne and roll over in a field. the driver who was nearby walked away with only minor bruises and cuts. no other vehicles was involved in this crash. the parents of charlie gard are speaking out about the death of their little boy who died from a rare condition. his case raised ethical and legal questions. back in march doctors treated charlie in london. they argued that he could be cured and should be taken off life support;, he couldn't be insured that is but his pants

parents warranted to take the baby to the u.s. for treatment. charlie was taken off life support. >> our son is an absolute warrior and we could not be prouder of him and we will miss him terribly. his body heart and soul may soon be gone but his spirit will live on for either in the and he will make a difference to people's lives for years to come. we will make sure of that. >> charlie died one week shy of what would have been his first birthday. and now those struggling to find meals this summer will have a little easier time thanks to a cub scout in wisconsin. seven-year-old bennett cottonstein set up a lemonade stand to raise money for the holman food pantry. bennett decided to spend this summer running the pantry after getting a tour t he was out selling lemonade water snack bars and sunflower seeds as well. >> we make our money and give all the money that we get to charity. it's going to help feed people

that don't have food. >> reporter:. >> his lemonade stand ended today but the cub scout wants to continue selling next summer as well. he raised about $200 over the course of six weeks. very nice. and the police athletic league of philadelphia teams up with the nba for a dave mentoring. the cozen pal center in north many north philadelphia hosted the full court press clinic today. retired players spent the day assisting kids with basketball drills. they were also mentoring round table classroom activities are being held as well. looks like everybody hal great time out there. nice. all right. i certainly had a great day out there today. i actually dragged out a little jacket, chelsea. i can't believe it. >> it feels like fall out there. drier air heading our way. >> thankfully. >> let's just say that part two of the weekend is looking much better than part one, natasha. our forecast you have to really look forward to. let's take you to a live look at storm scan3. we're finally seeing the storm system kind of pulling away getting out of here but it has

left behind some cloud cover across the delaware valley. also a couple of stray sprinkles and just some light shower activity into southern new jersey. this is going to be winding down, though, here over the next couple of hours. you can see it just kind of rotating on through. along with the clouds but we will see those skies actually clearing on out as we head into the overnight hours tonight. the official high temperature today in philadelphia, that was 77 degrees. 10 degrees below our average high of 87 for this time of year. so, yeah, definitely feeling like fall out there for sure. we're still checking in around 77 in philadelphia. 72 in wilmington. we're in the low 70's in millville also down the shore, 72 degrees in atlantic city, right around 71 in wildwood. we have 76 in trenton. 78 degrees currently in allentown. so, some cool air out there will and it's all thanks to our wind direction coming more out of the north so pulling in that cooler air, also some much drier air. so, dewpoints are going to be significantly lower heading into the next couple of days. they're already down into the upper 50's and that means it

feels very comfortable out there. 68 degrees in philadelphia and -- 58 degrees in philadelphia and a major difference compared to 24 hours ago. we were 12 degrees higher with our dewpoint this time yesterday, 12 degrees higher also in allentown but big change heading our way overnight tonight and into the next couple of days. it's going to be feeling awesome on sunday with dewpoints in the 40's and lower 50's. monday very pleasant and even tuesday not bad at all, so really nice stretch of weather where we aren't going to be dealing with too much in the way of humidity. it will be on the rise, though, as we head into the middle and end of the week. don't get used to it but also really enjoy the next three days because it's going to feel fantastic. future weather shows those clouds are going to be clearing on out as we head into the overnight hours tonight. we'll see that fratch what clearing taking place and waking up to wall to wall sunshine on the map as we head into sunday morning. that will lead to a very nice sunday afternoon. plenty of sunshine. it is going to be a gorgeous way to end the weekend. so, by the pool side you can

look for temperatures in the lower 80's, lots of sunshine but that u.v. index is going to be high and down the shore a couple of really great beach days heading our way. breezy with sunshine on sunday. high temperatures in the mid 70's. we will have that high risk of the rip currents. plenty of sunshine, a nice beach day tuesday with temperatures in the lower 80's. here's your forecast for tonight. gradual clearing, it's going to be a cool one. you can probably open up the windows, let in some fresh air, get some circulation going on in your household. low temperature right around 62 degrees. things feeling really good overnight. mostly sunny and nice on sunday, high temperature at around 83. your eyewitness weather seven-day forecast goes like this. 86 degrees as we head into monday. low humidity. heating up, though, by august 1st. 90 degrees on tuesday. and then it's going to be turning hot and humid by wednesday. now, as we head into thursday, the end of the week and also into the weekend we will have to bring back the risk for some showers and storms to the

forecast but honestly the next several days looking really great across the delaware valley. you have to smile at that, right? >> so beautiful. where is my happy face emoji? thank you so much chelsea. appreciate that. look who is fresh off training camp. lesley is back. >> helping out the eagles big time. day six of eagles training camp and the intensity turned up players putting on pads for the first time so a real football practice carson wentz and the offense had a good day on seven on seven drills. some reports say he was perfect 25 for 25. offensive coordinator frank wright with impressed with how well things went for carson. >> today was a very good day for the whole offense. you know i mean we had a few snafus here and there but it was a good day. i thought in the past game particular we really executed well probably -- it's only one practice so i'm not getting too excited. that's probably as well as we've executed in the passing game since i went here. >> matt klentak had five players they could trade

before monday's 4:00 p.m. deadline. he's been busy sending pat meshach to the rockies. hellickson is heading on the orioles o pitching prospect garrett chiefinger and cash. klentak sent howie kendrick to the nationals for a prospect fortunes see mills and international signing money. howie was batting .340 with two trips to the disabled list. phillies have 3 million remaining on howie's contract. the trade of kendrick allows altherr odubel herrera. >> they can take the torch from him so to speak and get more regular reps in the second half it's a good thing but -- you know i'm excited for him.

>> last night aaron altherr had a big game against the braves. he crushes a 412-foot homer to the second deck in left field. not many baseballs wind up there the in eighth. he left the yard again, this time to right, his second multi homer of the season. the phillies have scored five or more runs in 10 of their 13 games. jerad eickhoff on the mound for the phils tonight. the union are on the road against new england. jim curtin's team looking for their second win away from talen energy stadium. they beat columbus three-nil wednesday night. philly up seven-nothing in the second quarter. dan raudabaugh. the soul beat baltimore 70 to 21. yeah they have the best record in the league right now 12 and one. yes, natasha you heard that

working to put out a fire in their barn. as his father fought the out of control flames, he passed the phone to his son and told him to call for help. >> by the time i got down there it was fairly out of control already. >> he dialed and i took the phone and carried my baby sister out. >> well as the fire did spread to the home harrison carried his sister to an oak tree in the front yard that's where their other brother was waiting for them. the tree was a designated meeting spot in the family's fire safety plan. the fire destroyed the home but the family plans to rebuild on the same property and thankfully thanks to that little boy everybody is

>> welcome back. the world's only surviving giant panda triplets celebrated their third birthday. fans gathered at the zoo to witness the birthday party. the triplets born at the zoo are the fourth ever recorded and the only set where all three of the pandas survived. how cute. and check out these big blue eyes here. what better way to see you. a 40 day old tiger cub is on display in east china. the cub is the sector south china tiger to be bred in the park since 2015. it's even more rare than china's giant pandas. lots of cute animals. or big animals.
