good afternoon, i'm natasha brown in for ukee washington. it looks like our jessica dean has set up a very special ride into stone harbor. check her out. she's living the shore life, everybody riding in on a boat. my gosh, what an interests, jessica. >> natasha this is how i spend my fridays on a boat, this is fan has particular. we are having the best time. we are in stone harbor on a boat in the bay. our lauren casey is at wind drift in avalon high up to get full sue and tori woodill is on eighth street street beach on the actual beach. we have you covered as you said double the fun here. we're at the reid's, here and we have a good crowd. these people are living it up on a friday afternoon. then been in the water for hours and we have had people out here at restaurant, kind of hanging out. this is where we will be, docked, one to say, for the next few hours and into the evening time on this summer friday, as we celebrate, stone

harbor, and avalon. now, there are two different towns, that is for sure, but they actually share, of course , 7-mile island and a lot of history, lets take a look. >> i could not believe what i was seeing. i said to the personally was with, looking around, this reminds me of new jersey 1950 down here. >> reporter: take a walk down 96th street and stone harbor. >> to me this is heaven. >> reporter: those who call the popular summer family resort destination on 7-mile island home they move at a different speed. >> it is very peaceful, very healing, i have heard people hoff license ill, they come here and they find this is a very healing atmosphere. >> reporter: little more than 100 years old stone harbor is one of the younger shore towns but unlike many of the vacation destination as long the water, you won't find a boardwalk here. >> 1944 hurricane wiped out the whole boardwalk, lamp post s, casinos, everything that were up on the boardwalk,

fishing pier. >> reporter: once built to accommodate tourist the boardwalk was decimated by the storm. it was never rebuilt and nobody complained. >> after that storm they had a referendum, and the people decided not to restore the boardwalk because they didn't want the place to be honk i tonk and those were the word they use honk i tonk. >> reporter: stone harbor was not the first resort town on the island, 20 years before stone harbor, avalon was already buying, selling and building what their slogan cooler by a mile. >> avalon is cooler by a mile and it has been, it is a little bit of a lure. it was around 1940's but it became that and it is because of our unique geography, we extend out a bit farther in the atlantic ocean then most of the other barrier islands so we are picking up that nice ocean breeze and it makes us cooler by a mile. >> reporter: fueled by popularity of the railroad, the town's boomed in the early 1900's, construction of the

rail line that would eventually include stone harbor was difficult, falling into the sea three times before it was completed. >> in the same year, 1888, they brought the railroad down from sea isle, over townsend inlet and they built the avalon hotel. >> reporter: in addition took the social hub for the island in the 1940's, avalon hotel served as a place to house the u.s. coastguard, on alert foreign my submarines during world war two. later on in the 70's, many people remembered dancing the night away at the night clubs. >> the idea was, we have to have a way to get people here and then they have to somewhere to stay. so until that time, the only way that visitors or anybody were getting on the island was a ferry boat. >> reporter: while many pack up the car and head to the shore for the san, both avalon and stone harbor offer more green space then most other shore points. >> there is still large pieces of maritime forest remaining

in avalon and we are one of the only won in the whole east coast. >> reporter: stone harbor it is hard to miss more than 5,000 acres of wet land, studied and carefully preserved by wet land institute since 1960's. >> i think it gives an added dimension to the community. >> reporter: in the end both shore points share a love of community even if a healthy rivalry still exists between them. >> i think it is when you live in that town, that is the best town. beaches are the best, stores are the best, people are the best. it is kind of where it is a loyalty thing. >> reporter: there is a lot of history between these two towns. stone harbor over a hundred. avalon is celebrating its 125th birthday this year. i'm so glad to be joined wye stone harbor's mayor judy davis, and public information officer for avalon, scott wall , thanks for being here. >> thanks for having us. >> we're spread out all over your area mayor, lets start

with you what is it about stone harbor that keeps so many families coming back year after year. >> one of the things that stone harbor is known for is that traditional family vacation and one of the things , just last sunday that i did, i celebrated with a family that it was their 70th consecutive year. >> wow. >> vacationing as a family. same week every year, for 70 years. i went down, met with them last sunday, spent sometime on the beach, had photo opportunities, that is one of the greatest things about stone harbor that great family tradition, they just keep coming back. >> tradition is alive and well scott, 125th birthday for avalon what makes avalon stand out. >> i think what makes it stand out in conjunction with the stone harbor, both communities offer family events, all summer long, avalon will have free beach movies on tuesday night, and three symphony concerts throughout the summer stone harbor has a farmers market this weekend a huge arts and crafts festival. both towns really complicate each other and make it a

family experience. >> you read my mind because i wanted to ask you guys how do you work together because you are in this unique position and really wonderful position to be in. >> well, one of the things about avalon and stone harbor, 7-mile island truly offers something for every part of the family from the four years old to the 80 years old, from the club scene to the fine dining, to the beach, to the athletics, outdoor events, to wanting to do nothing, the 7- mile island really covers all of it. >> something for everyone. >> something for everyone it all starts with the beach and when we needed to refortify beach after, project, judy, avalon, we talk together and said lets do it together and end result was over a million cubic yards of beautiful beach in the summertime. >> let's talk this weekend. you have fun things coming up. is what going on in avalon this weekend. >> we have so much going on, the memorial is a fund that raises money for local families dealing with pediatric cancer. they have events all the

through the week and coming up for the weekend. coming up in avalon we have a sinatra concert coming up, 50 's day atlantic symphony concert and so much more. every day is there something going on in avalon. every thursday night free concerts downtown at our veterans plaza. >> nice, we love free. mayor, is what going on in stone harbor. >> everybody does love free this weekend is our 55th arts and craft festival at 80th street and the beach and that has over 200 artisans will be there. wonderful shopping and is there also going to be a food court there. there will be outdoor music and things of that nature. so that is this weekend. we have things continuing, like scott mentioned our farmers market, machine night we have family nights, tuesday night we have tuesday at tower that is outdoor concert, wednesday night we have corn hole tournaments at elementary school outside. that is new. it really caught on. then we have this year it has moved from avalon to stone harbor is 76ers beach bash, that is august 26th.

we head in the overnight period we will see a cold front dropping in that will give us a chance for a small portion of the upcoming weekend but for right now it is all sunshine along the coast as we check on satellite and radar, head ago cross i-95 and up toward mountains we have some storms that have fired up, mainly in the poconos area of the cell moving through, heavy rain coming down in weatherly moving off to the north/ northeast but we have a mainly quiet evening, temperatures that are feeling good and pretty summer-like as we check across the region. eighty-seven in philadelphia we are at 82 in ac. rain cooled air right now in mount pocono. 74 degrees. we're at 80 million-dollar wood and perfect beach weather as we check on our shore point temperatures 82 in cape may. eighty-one in rehoboth beach and currently 80 degrees in stone harbor. 78 degrees with that sea breeze in ocean city. well, whether you are at the shore, suburbs, the city, mountains, of course, fire up the grill, friday evening, 848 g

>> it is a beautiful, friday afternoon, in stone harbor, new jersey down the shore and we're just happy to be sharing it with you. we will spend the rest of today telling but stone harbor and avalon, and what makes these places so special. mayor of stone harbor just telling us one family has been coming here for 70 years. there is a lot of tradition alive and well. these two towns are right next to each other. and we want to go to vittoria woodill who is around 80th street where avalon and stone harbor meet up. >> that is right, we are at the place where the divider is here, avalon being on this side, and if you notice, this is iain from the avalon beach patrol he is securing this side and this side of the line we have captain sandy of the stone harbor beach patrol monitoring this area as well. guys, you know, one of the great things about being down the shore is just being here but it is all back safe. we have you guys to thank for that. i will start with you, lieutenant iain, what is most

important part for for the avalon beach patrol when it comes to tackling each summer. >> i think just making sure our people are safe. that is always number one priority that comes before everything else before these races, as long as we are safe we are having a successful summer. >> lieutenant iain, i'm sure captain sandy, you can agree with he has said all about safety in stone harbor that is what you are all about as well >> safety is always the priority. the races are great, but we have to always make sure things are safe. at the even of the day that is all we really care about. >> you have heard, them talk about races. lets talk about the races we have. even today, we have both side of the divide here, avalon and stone harbor going head to head, what is happening tonight. >> so, the margate memorials is happening right now or at 6:30 it is starting. it is all 15 beach patrols of south jersey are competing, they go doubles race, singles race, and a swim race so that

is happening at 6:30 tonight. >> captain sandy, we're already giving the crew a little bit of the work out, is it usually a friendly competition between other beach patrols from other beaches. >> it is friendly but it is quite intense. >> okay. >> we all take pride in our patrols and one of the benefits of the competitions is that we sharpen our skills, we train at run, rowing and swimming and for the races and it make us more effective at life guarding. >> even seeing a spectator for these races is incredible. for tv timing we had to bring them in, and send them back and they rode out there quickly. they are trained to tackle waves like they are right now. >> they are out there every morning, they are out there practicing, thinks second nature. >> if you want to get abs, definitely a good way to start is by rowing and tackling these waters that is for sure. leaving with the piece of safety for everybody out there , from both avalon and stone harbor, they say, the one thing that you must do is

never, ever, swim without a life guard present, that is best way to be safe, and have fun at the beach, i'm sending it back to you, guess contact thanks so much, good luck tonight. >> thank you thank you. sorry, lauren, i meant you >> thanks, tori, i can see you behind me, we are up at wind drift hotel, we have a beautiful view starting to get busy right now, people getting hungry from being on the beach all day what a gorgeous day to enjoy the shore, not a cloud in the sky but we are going to have some changes. i think you'll like most of the changes that are on the way with the cold front that moves through the delaware valley as we head throughout the overnight period but we are dealing with some storms right now, they are mainly concentrated far north and western of the part of the sit as we check on current temperatures they are feeling summer like. temperatures in the 80's except rain cooled air in the poconos. seventy-four in mount pocono. 89 degrees in allentown. eighty-seven in philadelphia we have got that sea breeze

kicking down short at 82. feeling good in atlantic city. eighty-one in wildwood. that ocean temperature up to 76 degrees. we do note that is temperature difference, gradient looking off to the west, cooler temperatures on the back side of the cold front currently 75 n pittsburgh. 76 degrees in scranton. we will see that frontal boundary moving through overnight tonight but ahead of that boundary, it is steamy today, steamy, feels great but certainly feeling that steam factor in the city and suburbs with dew points generally in the middle 60's but we will drop those, down, as we head into tomorrow afternoon and especially on sunday, it is going to be a typically dry feeling by august standard. storm scan three showing us mainly dry conditions, finally catching a break in both areas from the stormy week, sunshine in command up and down i-95 corridor for south jersey, down the shore but do see those cloud and a few showers and storms moving through the poconos right now. severe thunderstorm watch is actual any effect for western and central pennsylvania, and due to those cells, that have fired up and they are slowly

working their way eastbound but those will arrive overnight tonight while we are fast asleep. so some well timed rain, as we head into our upcoming weekend some could link inner to our saturday morning but then we will clear out as we head into saturday afternoon. overnight tonight increasing cloud, those thunderstorms, developing especially as we head after midnight, low temperature falling back down to 70 degrees. as we head in the day tomorrow we will see lingering showers or thunderstorm in the morning and then, increasing sunshine in, to the afternoon. future weather will confirm that for us as we head in the evening hours, mainly dry for most of us, and then throughout the overnight period, we're seeing a broken line of storms moving through, we will continue to weaken as it traverses the area, seeing best chance of the stronger storm over toward berks county and lehigh valley. and then as we head into mid-morning those storms moving off shore, and then sunshine will break out as we head into midday and the afternoon, and let's set us up for an awesome saturday afternoon and evening, and then it is even more, beautiful, sunday. sunshine, and low humidity,

while playing in their first preseason game, yeah, he was third stringer at the time. after carson's improvement from last year to this year, it has been dramatic. >> totally different. he goes through his progressions so quick, way faster, he is more comfortable in the pocket. he knows where everybody will be at. it is night and day. >> he can press on with the new teaching and information that he has been given, and that is the growth, you know, those incremental get with that quarterback position with carson. he has done a great job. >> training camp is no walk in the park. practices are long, they are hard, they are taxing but today doug pederson gave them a chance to cut out early but only if jason peters and fletcher cox could catch some punts. big fella. they are both 300 plus pound like combined 640-pound. >> it was a good day. >> after three days, you know,

here. >> yeah, absolutely, jessica at the bay, tori at the beach and i'm at the bar where people are thirsty. everyone enjoying a nice little beverage after a long work with beautiful conditions , and people getting their grub on. it is a beautiful evening. not a cloud in the sky. that is how we will keep it for folks in the delaware valley. as we head in the overnight period we have a chance of seeing a few thunderstorms. but temperatures right now, feeling great, feeling like summer, lets check on some of those numbers right now, in the city, temperatures feeling toasty, we're in the upper 80 's right now in the city, right around 87 degrees, temperatures are rain cooled, in the poconos, right now, about 74 degrees work some storm activity, that has moved through, and 82 degrees currently down the shore, dew points they are elevated generally in the 60's so we will have a bit of the steam factor with winds out of the south. storms right now they are concentrated well far west of the city right now, and rain working through mount pocono but they are moving off to the north, up wind, we have a

severe thunderstorm watch in effect. that will drop in for us but good news it will come through , not through through the prime heating of the day. we will not see a threat in the way of severe weather overnight tonight but we will talk more about the timing of those storms and when they will clear out on our saturday and that is coming up in your full forecast coming up in just a couple minutes. >> we will check back with you in a bit. there were tons of adorable kid on display, down in avalon last night, but lets take a lot video. i think you'll love it. this is avalon's baby parade, and the kid, strutted their stuff from 21st and ocean drive to veterans plaza, and on lookers obviously could not get enough of the cuteness. neither could we. we wanted to show it to you. the parade made for i great night of family fun, there in avalon. and happening this weekend, the 55th annual, stone harbor arts and crafts festival and i want to bring in miranda dukea the director of recreation and you guys have been planning for this festival.

david spunt is live in brookhaven with the surveillance video police want you to see right now, david. >> reporter: hi there in a cash a detectives at brookhaven police department are hoping that the guy turns himself in but they are not bank than on it. is there a active manhunt right now. they say that they already have several lead. brookhaven delaware county authorities are on the hunt foreman who hit a landscaper with his car and then drove off. it has happened thursday afternoon on jackson drive. the landscaper was standing outside of his white truck when he saw a man steel a leaf blower from the back of the truck. the landscaper tried to stop the suspect by stepping in front of the getaway car. >> victim grabbed on to the vehicle, and, car continued to accelerate, and slammed on the brakes causing victim to fall off the car and hit his head on the pavement. >> this surveillance video shows the suspect making his getaway in the silver dodge avenger, he took off to parts unknown while landscaper waited for an ambulance.

continue. >> it will, continue. we will have one small bump but come when we are fast asleep on our friday night, conditions right now, as jessica was mentioning down right gorgeous, everybody in a great mood. they have cocktails but that is because they are down the shore and we have this beautiful weather that will continue into the evening hours, staying mainly dry across the region as temperatures, they are warm but right around average and where we should be for early august. our current temperature in philadelphia is 87 degrees. checking in more toasty in allentown at 89. down the shore we have a sea breeze. temperatures right around 80 degrees. rain cooled air has settled into mount pocono. temperature at 74. dew points are in the upper 60 's and lower 70's we have a steam factor in the oppressive humidity but little bit balmy but that will get kicked out of here by cooler and dryer air building on the back side of the cold front from overnight tonight. your comfort index into our saturday feeling pleasant and then by sunday, feeling down

storms arriving, crossing over i-95 corridor around three or 4:00 in the morning so shouldn't bother too many of us as we head into mid-morning that line of cells moving off shore and once those storms do move off shore that is it for our rain chance as we head into the rest of the weekend, sunshine breaks out by midday tomorrow and then stick with us, but talking about storms we will have to keep a close eye on the tropics as we head into the next month, month and a half, activities increases in the second half of august, september, and see peak september 10th and we have a greater chance throughout the rest of the season of seeing a major hurricane. we have some areas have disturb weather right now, especially as we look out toward eastern atlantic with a area of disturbance with a 80 percent chance of development. we will keep a close eye on. that keeping a close eye on sunshine, chance of the storm early tomorrow morning as we head in the upcoming weekend as we head into monday, storms return with that sunshine by mid week. we will have more from stone harbor and
