at 11:00 cbs summerfest heads to seven mile island, it's the tale of two towns, stone harbor and avalon, both carry a rich history among the jersey shore points. in stone harbor, downtown is the place to be and in the evening, long lines, form for one of the southeast traditions around. in avalon, it's cooler by a mile. and it's not just the beach that has people coming back year after year, tonight the sights and sounds of cbs3's summerfest. i'm jessica dean coming to you from stone harbor, we've been here all day long, it's been a gorgeous day down the shore. turned into a beautiful night. we're here on the bay, enjoying what's left of this wonderful friday evening. and as we mentioned we've been in avalon throughout the night. two shore towns that share a lot in common. of course they're on the same barrier island but they also

share a lot of history. both are located on seven mile island, that barrier island was purchased by the seven mile beach company in 1887. that company founded both avalon and stone harbor. but avalon was the first to develop. during the first 20 years, avalon was created as a resort community complete with a railroad and an inn. stone harbor was developed a short time later, now, what actually originally had a boardwalk, but when a 1944 hurricane blew through, the residents decided their town was just fine without that boardwalk. and then, here we are today. both towns are destinations that keep people coming back year after year, we have so much to talk to you about tonight, i'm hit one of the coolest hot spots in town and vittoria woodill is taking in sinatra and mini golf. we want to talk about the weather.

as i mentioned it's been beautiful here. and a beautiful night. lauren casey is in avalon, and lauren, we're just hoping this continues. >> reporter: yes, we'll have a liquid hiccough in the way of a shower or thunderstorm tonight or tomorrow morning, otherwise a beautiful weekend. as you were saying it has been a beautiful night, crystal clear skies, i'm underneath the moonlight in avalon outside the wind drift hotel. got the band jamming, beautiful see breeze, we have storms knocking on the door. a swarth of precipitation with imbedded thunderstorms and a severe thunderstorm in effect to the west of berks county with the line slowly approaching these line of storm will approach from the lehigh valley and the poconos as we head into the next couple of hours. and that line of storm will continue to work itself cross the delaware valley but the good news is, it will be weakening as it does so. temperatures, very comfortable,

generally in the 70's across the area. we have the nice sea breeze kicking in. temperature at 75 in wildwood, 77 in atlantic city. overnight, increasing clouds with that threat of storms, stronger storm possible up towards the lehigh valley and berks county. we will see some storms crossing the i95 corridor but the line breaking down as it continues to move east. we'll talk more about the timing of the storms, how long they will persist into saturday an big drop-off in humidity levels, pretty awesome weekend forecast shaping up and i'll have more specifics in your full eyewitness forecast coming up in a few >> we'll check back in with you in a little bit. back here in stone harbor, we went out to the main street, walked around and we found a tradition and people line up for a sweet treat, but it's about more than just the great ice cream. ♪ on a warm friday night in stone harbor, a line stretches

the atmosphere. it's the tradition, we've been coming every year since we were little. >> every gets ice cream and their favorite flavor and we go shopping. >> reporter: memories that will last a lifetime. it was fun talking with everyone tonight and spending some time here in stone harbor. tori was just down the road in avalon and you were doing the same thing kind of checking in with people. seeing what they were up to >> busy gal, and there is so much to do. you think the day is done when you're done with the beach. but no, avalon is always awake. i feel like i could see that on the back of a plane >> that will be like a new damage phrase >> looking for the word, found it. thank you, yes. avalon is always awake, even at night. >> even after a fun day at the beach. when the moon comes up. s island of avalon is still

awake with action. sun soaked families are spending quality time putting for a hole in one at go fish. i'm going to adopt this family. >> that's great. i'll see you is the pga tour >> others are taking a stroll or chasing the last bit of sun, many are taking it easy by the sounds of the summer of club at the avalon community hall. >> the summer club is the 17th piece orchestra. four lead singer. >> reporter: lead the crowd in a sing along and at home make a difference >> we go to hope lodge on one month a month to perform. and our responser for the show is frank miller. >> reporter: let's just say in avalon, it's all good.

the coolest part about being in avalon really was all the act >> you were busy, you weren't kidding >> i'm exhausted. avalon exhausted me but i will be back. >> we're -- it won't keep you down for long. you'll be back in no time, thanks for the update from just down the way. back here in stone harbor, there's a wonderful mixture of restaurants and stores and also a great movie theater here in town. the harbor square theater is the only one in town and to the delight of those who stay at the shore points, it was recently renovated. locals can stop in for a magic show or any other performance and you can even grab a bite to eat eat at harbor burger bar on 9th street. another aspect at stone harbor that so many love is the abundant amount of nature and so many areas are actually untouched. a must see place is the wetlands

institute on the back bay, its mission is to promote appreciation, understanding and stewardship of coastal eco systems. the wildlife viewing opportunities are great and it's a fantastic place to just escape for a little bit and hey, if you head down to stone harbor this weekend, it's the 55th annual arts and crafts fair they've been preparing all year, people are coming from all over. the event welcome it's hundreds of artists and attracts thousands of visitors, activities for the kids, the arts and crafts festival takes place this saturday and sunday and it opens at 9:00 a.m. both days. free and tons of stuff for kids. would he have got much more here from stone harbor and avalon but we want to go back to natasha brown to get an update on the news of the day, natasha we're not done here yet. we got more for you coming up

headlines. there's a $10,000 reward after a series of arsons inside a luxury apartment building in philadelphia. "eyewitness news" reporter alicia nieves tells us residents are on edge as the search intensifies for an arsonist. >> reporter: concerns that a high-rise in the center city within the past months have dealt with seven fires >> it is very concerning to me >> federal alcohol tobacco and firearm investigators have determined they're all intentionally set. happened on different floors of the building in common areas. each were small fires quickly put out by sprinkler systems, but officials noted this gives them no relief. and pointed to examples of high-rise fires in london and dubai. at scary scenarios of how a small fire at a high-rise could end >> they may seem small in nature. but all it takes is the lick of a flame going in the wrong

direction, and we could have potential catastrophe. >> sherman has lived in the sterling more than a decade on one of the higher floors. he describes himself as being barely mobile. 90 of bigger foyer broke out he'd struggle >> just hope had they find what's going on >> most of the roughly 1,000 residents that live on her, the fire alarms have been a headache to deal with. for eight people have had significant water damage to the apartment. at least two have will to be relocated. the atf and building management have put up a reward for $10,000 for any information that leads to an arrest. alicia nieves cbs3 eyewitness news. the search is on for put a gunman and three other suspects who pulled off a car rental heist at philadelphia international airport. it happened around 4:00 this morning, the suspects assaulted the front gate guard, took his

phone then stole at least four cars. we're told the gunman was wearing a blue hood demean anyone with information is asked to contact police right away. a philadelphia police officer is being fired after injuring a man in 26 custody. james yeager has been suspended for 30 days with intent to dismiss, officials say he slammed, a handcuffed suspect to the ground in kensington on july 10th. police say yeager swung the suspect around forcing the man to strike his head against the side of a pool. yeager is a four-year veteran of the force. president trump meantime is in new jersey tonight for his first extended vacation since taking office. the president is spending the next 17 days at his golf club in bedminister. the white house said this will be a working vacation. meanwhile, attorney general jeff sessions vowed today to prosecute anyone who leaks

classified government information. cbs3 summerfest is down the shore this week along the beautiful beaches of seven mile island, jessica dean and vittoria woodill are live in stone harbor. they've already shown us so much fun, i should wish i could be there but there's more to talk about tonight. >> we wish that too, natasha that would be a lot of fun. one of the great things about being down the shore is that you can kind of wonder around the different towns and go into the wonderful little stores that are unique to that shore point >> you've been a witness to think every time we do a summerfest we find something. that's right now story. and it's because there are so many mom and pop owned places that you want to support and speaking of mom and pop places there's one in stone harbor that is truly unique because it's always christmas. even in august. >> this chris mats shop opens

its doors in early may and stays open through late december. the shop has been delighting beach goers since 1985. selling anything you can dream up. is an it has, besides, lights >> the owners ed and deb say their best sellers are hand made. their sea shell ornaments are picked up off the shores and beaches every day and hand painted. they feature every shore point in the area and they're ready for a christmas tree no matter what you like to visit. they're beautiful. she must spend a lot of time painting because there's a lot of ornaments >> that's taking home a memory straight from the beach. but it is summer and you can tell by the weather. we had a hot day, a warm night. kind of a cool breeze but warm. definitely humid. let's check in with lauren casey, you got the full forecast

for the coming weekend. >> absolutely. we have a nice weekend shaping up, we will see a chance of a shower or thunderstorm but it will mainly come while all of us are fast asleep overmight after a great friday i'm out here outside the wind drift hotel the band is still jamming. people are out and about and of course i brought my rod the mobile weather watcher enjoying the beautiful conditions under this moonlight sky. nice sea breeze, general the in the 70's across much of the area and in our shoppers let's check in with some current conditions, 77 in atlantic city. temperature at 74 in philadelphia. we're at 74 degrees in wildwood. checking in about two feet away from a line of stone harbor we're at 74. 75 in cape may and 76 in rehoboth beach. due points tell us about that stick company factor and generally in the upper 60's, not oppressive humidity, could be worse by august standards, it

will be ai typically low. overnight will cut down the due points as we head to saturday afternoon and due points as we head to sunday will be in the lower 50's. so nice feeling. for an august day. stormscan 3 showing us with this cold front worry going to have to contend with storms, western berks county seeing heavy rains approaching -- in this line of storms, models are indicating that this line of storms will trend to weekend as it continues to move eastbound so expecting a stronger storm possibly up towards the lehigh valley, poconos and in berks county over the next couple hours, maybe a strong storm some time suburbs with a line continues to weekend as it closes down on i95 cross i95 overnight. we could see showers and thunderstorms as we head to early morning hours around 7:00,

8:00, by mid to late, all cells offshore and that will be the last of our rain chances for the upcoming weekend. still a chance of storms. turning over to mostly sunny skies and that will set us up for a beautiful weekend sunday, bright sunshine, low humidity and high temperatures in the low 80's and the city and the upper 70's at the shore. chance of storms monday, but next week drier conditions with sunshine and high temperatures in the 80's. but you know, it's getting a little late. past my bed time. mobile weather watcher bed time. maybe i'll go in for like a dance or two into the wind drift hotel and probably just turn in, guys, because you know, i'm -- i'm an early bird i like to go to bed early and just wake up and catch the day the next day.
