this is cbs-3 "eyewitness news" this morning. >> heavy rain and thunderstorms roll through the region to start the day. but will this storm system have a big impact on your weekends? matt peterson is ahead with the forecast. authorities are looking for an arsonist, they say seven fires in the past month alone were intentionally set. center city apartment building , liver with how residents are coping. >> as the president departs the white house for his august vacation, his attorney general issues a warning to leak ers. i'm here with the details on the white house. >> today is saturday, august 5th, good morning, everyone, i'm january jan carabeo, over to matt peterson thunder and lightning when i

came in this morning. >> rocking and rolling out there, to say the least. good news is it is not going to have a lasting impact on the weekend. now, if you're up early of course on this saturday morning, jan, like you said, it is wet, loud, and it is kind of a mess to start out the day. most of the heaviest thunder and lightning and the heaviest rain, pushed through the center city already. this has been going on for about the last maybe two hours or so. we get a look at storm scan3, but again, the heaviest rain at this point looks to have already come through center city f you're in central new jersey back down toward maybe some of the more northern shore point, hasn't quite gotten to you yet. but you are in the cross hairs for maybe some shower and thunderstorm activity later on here in just maybe about maybe 20 minute to half hour. so you can see, toms river, forked river, route nine, dry for the time being, north of little egg harbor and atlantic city where the next rounds every thunderstorm activity will be, as you get closer to the shore. the rest of central new jersey

, back through burlington county, areas of atlantic county, see more moderate rainfall, route 206 in the middle of the light to moderate rainfall through central new jersey. for those of us here back closer to philly not too much going on now, in center city, and in some of the close surrounding suburbs, light, maybe little bit of moderate rainfall, still possibility, maybe few rumbles of thunder here or there. overall most of the heaviest rain has now exit dollars the pennsylvania section of our viewing area. temperatures for the most part , sitting in the 60s where the rain came through. but still, where it has been dry, it is still looking at temperatures there in the 70s including millville at 75 degrees, 76 atlantic city. here is the day planner, 9:00 this morning up to 75 once again, top it out, jan, at 82. you can see while there is during this morning plenty of sunshine to go around as we get into the afternoon. >> looks pretty nice, thank you, matt. gunfire in delaware county community has but the three people in the hospital this morning. bullet casings littered the

corner at fourth and market streets in darby shooting happened about 10:45 last night. two of the victims in critical condition. the other person is in stable condition. no word on a suspect at this time. >> meantime, a car has struck and killed a pedestrian in philadelphia's kensington neighborhood. chopper three, over e street and allegheny avenue where medics returned to the scene. just before 10:30 last night. the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. driver did stay there, the cause is under investigation. >> another deadly crash now there is one along kelly drive in philadelphia. police say a car and a motorcycle collided near fountain green drive around 11:30 last night, the motorcyclist died at hahnemann hospital. the cause of this crash is still under investigation. >> new this morning, philadelphia police are investigating another accident on the roosevelt boulevard. investigators say two cars collided near the mascher street intersection, around 1:15 this morning, one person went to einstein medical center, there is no word yet

on how serious those injuries r. >> and, arsonist who is targetting a center city high rye has price on his head, ten thud for information leading to his capture. anita oh, live on the scene this morning, what do you know >> reporter: jan, atf officials say someone with a axe to grind intentionally set seven fires here at the sterling apartment homes over the last month, at the corner of 18th and jfk boulevard. the most recent fire was set on friday, around midnight. and two resident had to be temporarily moved as a result. now, all of these fires were very small, officials say, could have bigger consequences , net the common areas of different flooder here at the complex according to officials. roughly 1,000 resident live in this building, and eight aoun vet had significant water damage as a result. but although these flames were quickly put out, officials point to devastating high-rise fires in london and dubai as

example what could happen if a blaze spirals out of control. >> they may seem small in nature but all it takes is the lick after flame going in the wrong direction and we have potential catastrophy. >> investigators and building management offering $10,000 reward for any information leading to arrest and building management are also stepping up security patrols inside and say they will be installing security cameras, as well. live in center city this morning, anita oh, cbs-3, " eyewitness news." >> okay, ankle eat, a thank you. philadelphia police continue their search this morning for gunman and three other suspect in a car rental heist at philadelphia international airport. this happened at avis around 4:00 friday morning. investigators say the suspect assaulted the front gate guard there, took his phone, and stole at least four cars. the gunman reportedly was wearing a blue hoodie. if you have any information, give philadelphia police a call.

>> and a philadelphia police officer will soon be off the floors after allegedly injuring a man in custody. officials say 26 year old james yeager slammed a handcuffed suspect to the grounds in kensington on july 10. police say that yeager through that suspect around, forcing the man to strike his head against the side of a pool. well, yeager, four year veteran of the force, now suspended for 30 days, with intent to dismiss. >> police in delaware county hope you can help them track down the person who ran down landscaper took off. happened on jackson drive brookhaven. investigators say the landscaper was standing outside this truck when he saw a man steel a leaf below err from the back of the truck. police say the landscaper tried to stop the suspect, by stepping in front of the get-away car, this silver dodge after inning err, captured on surveillance video , see right there. the landscaper now in stable condition. police are investigating what caused a deadly crash in quakertown bucks county. authorities say a driver died

after slamming into a pool supply company on route 309. the impact there sparked a big fire that damaged the building and apartment on upper floor. all of the resident, thankfully, were able to get out safely. and in other news this morning, president trump is in bed minister, new jersey, starting with what the white house calls a working vacation , hills administration cracking down on government leaks. as we report, the leaks are said to be coming from a wide range of sources in the legislative annex he can tiff branches. >> reporter: president trump's summer vacation is officially underway at his golf club in new jersey but his attorney general jeff session asks get to go work cracking down on leaks. >> we are taking a stand. this culture of leaking must stop. >> sessions said his office has tripled the number of leak investigations this year. just this week, the washington post published reportedly classified transcript every president trump's january phonecall with mexican and us a alien leaders quoted as

>> flashflood rarely seen. >> get out of the way. >> just outside the town of may err, arizona, north of phoenix, came a wall of water, mud, and debris. campers scrambled as the flood wiped out their gear. >> thank god i got out of there? in the flat lands below, the flooding came as a surprise, to people who were enjoying a bright sunny day. it came a day after this flashflood that struck southern california with a vengeance. >> very serious situation out here in the area. >> mud wiped out part of a railroad track, this woman among the nearly 200 passengers evacuated in the high dessert. >> we were stuck in the middle of no where. i seen the flood on both sides something is going on, something is wrong. >> it has been active week of weather throughout the southwest with rain, floods, and powerful winds uprooting trees. the pilot flying the helicopter for our affiliate in phoenix actually saw the flood waters approaching a group of people was able to

lands the helicopter and warn them to get out of the way. carter evans, cbs news, los angeles. >> some powerful images there, and, matt, we've been dealing with our rain, flashflooding earlier this week. nothing to compare to. that will but we did have some significant flooding in south jersey. now we're dealing with more rain today. >> exactly, we had our fair share. we've been kind of in the sickle of heavy rain, then couple every days of quiet conditions, then we get the heavy rain again. that's what we're dealing with here this morning, colds front coming across the region, shower, thunderstorms, waking people up on twitter more than few folks complaining about the fact again in the middle of the night getting these strong showers, thunderstorms that are waking people up. hopefully they can go back to sleep or maybe get up and start your day out little early, stick with us here on cbs-3 "eyewitness news." yesterday was another hot day for us. we did have plenty of sunshine >> we didn't get a ton of precipitation in the afternoon we were waiting for maybe couple of pop up thunderstorms to potentially form. they never really kind of got

going. so we got to 88 degrees yesterday. pretty seasonable day for us, compared to the 87 for our normal for this time of year, say well below that record high of 98. so again, that 88 that we had yesterday, going to be completely different than what we see today. because it also was a little humid yesterday afternoon. that is kind of conditions that are definitely changing thanks to the cold front that is sweeping across the region right now. storm scan3 shows you all of that rain and thunderstorm activity, here this morning. it started just couple of hours ago, pushing through the philadelphia area, and now, it is back down into central new jersey, so let's take a look, down toward toms river, you see wear town, stafford in there. this is where we're seeing the heaviest rainfall currently. now moving toward some of the far northern shore point. that's where we get the moderate, maybe even at times some heavy rain still a chance for few rumbles of thunder going into the mix, there as well. tabernacle, burlington county, woodland, back down toward atlantic particular county,

camden county, as well, right now for you folks there across 206 and route 30, pretty much light rain, maybe few pocket there, just around mullica where we could get maybe little bit more rainfall, winslow and waterford, there is a chance for maybe some heavier pockets here and there but again, overall, it looks like for the most part central new jersey now just dealing rain. heading down to southwest parts of the state, millville getting chance for again maybe some more moderate rainfall there, vineland, as well, some heavier rainfall for you guys. just north of the lower alloway creek, also, you can see, pocket of more heavier rain, so that's kind of what we're dealing with now at this point. the heaviest rain, the strongest thunderstorms, have started to fade out. they've pushed away from philadelphia, and even now pushing almost off the coast. fill at this self, still light , moderate, light rain coming down for us, we head even further back to the west. you can see a lot of the northern surrounding suburbs are dry at this point. headed up toward the lehigh valley, poconos, really looking at very comfortable

conditions this morning. 60s where the rain already came down. what we're still waiting for the front to cross we do have 70s, dover, millville, back through atlantic city. current set up, cold front, high pressure will be quickly filtering in through the back side of the front as we go through the rest of the morning, into the afternoon. you can see the front completely off the coast well into the mid-morning hours, plenty of sunshine for thus afternoon, sunday, looks like it, will wake up to maybe a few light clouds out there. and then overall, even though it looks like it could be maybe few clouds here or thereon sunday afternoon, i really think we are going to be on the sunny side every things. 81 degrees today at the shore. doesn't get much better than this, low humidity, plenty of sunshine for us, eyewitness weather seven day forecast, 82 for the high in the city. we go with 81 tomorrow. so look being at pretty much a great weekends. more rounds of thunderstorm activity monday, high of 80. then, jan, another rounds of some very comfortable conditions for the middle of the week. >> matt, another good saturday to sleep in and then head outdoors.

>> good morning, i'm january can barrow, storms are moving through the delaware valley right now, let's get right over to meteorologist, matt peterson with the eyewitness weather forecast, good saturday morning, we catch you inside today. >> yes, for the time being, little wet out there, even though the heaviest rain really looks like it is pushed through to the center city area, good news for just philly. we are going to still continue to see couple every light showers for at least the next probably half hour, if not 45 minute to an hour, so, here in philly. now, if you're in central new jersey or if you're even back toward some of the northern shore points, still getting moderate to heavy rainfall, looking at storm scan3, some rumbles every thunder in areas of toms river, portions of new jersey over toward seaside, seaside height getting in on some of the more moderate to heavy rainfall, as women. and maybe even northern long beach island. now, seeing some of the shower activity and some of the, again, could be little heavier at times. a more wider picture there, on

storm scan3, shows that philly still in that light green, so again, still some light showers for us, back down into cumberland county, south every vineland, new jersey, where another spot that we're getting moderate to heavy rainfall with also the chance for once again maybe few rumbles every thunder. now where the rain hasn't really been all of that heff think morning, still waiting for the front to pull through, dover, millville, atlantic city, southwards, still the seven's, still mug think morning. but you see philly, wilmington , trenton, point to the north where the rain and front have already come through, getting little bit on the cooler side, some 60s for us there, winds speeds quiet for the time being, it will be little breezy later this afternoon. we will see the temperatures climb from the 70s, six's here this morning, jan, to up high temperature of 82 degrees, today, and then looks like it will be wonderful sunday. we will breakdown that in just a bit. >> sounds good, thank you, matt. police investigating triple shooting in delaware county. someone opened fire on the corner of fourth and walnut streets in darby around 10:45 last night. two people are now in critical condition. and another is in stable

condition. no word yet on suspect, or a motive. >> meantime, in philadelphia, the feds are looking for an arsonist after seven fires in three weeks, at the very same apartment building. the fires have happened at the sterling amount, at 18th street and jfk boulevard in center city. the most recent, was very early friday morning. the sprinkler system put out small fires and trash rooms and hallways there. but eight people have significant water damage in their ants. and at least two of them are temporarily relocated. >> any fire, whether small, medium, large, it doesn't make a difference. anybody who intentionally tries to set a fire, especially in a large residential building like that , is as far as i'm concerned is a very dangerous person. >> yes, and there is now a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of that arsonist. >> now, to a nationwide tragedy, we're talking about suicides this morning, a new report from the centers for disease control says suicide

is growing rapidly among teenagers. jericka dunn dan looks what's behind the rising teen toll. >> he was just an all around great kid. he was an athlete. >> jennifer gonzalez says her 17 year old son, jack ferrell, seemed fine last thanksgiving. >> and the next day i get woken up by the police knocking on my door saying i needed to come with them right away. i found out then that he shot himself in the head. >> new cdc data shows suicide rate for ferrell, age 15 to 19 , increased more than 30%, three years ago con raid roy dried in this truck from carbon monoxide poisoning after his friends michelle carter encouraged him to commit suicide through dozens of text messages. in a highly publicized trial, we learned both teens suffered from mental illness. the cdc also says suicide rate

for teenage girls are at a 40 year high. expert site family instability and substance abuse among some factors for suicide, but the role of cyber bullying is becoming more prevalent. in june, 12 year old mallary grossman took her own life. her mother diane says it was because she was harassed in texts on snap chat and instagram. >> in the beginning it was just teasing, it was name calling, it was exclusion was an important part, you can't fit here, you're not welcome at this table. >> professor jean is a psychologist at san diego state university. >> teens are much more likely now than they were just five years ago, or seven years ago, to say that they're ands us, and depressed, and thinking about suicide. >> in a provocative new article for the atlantic, makes a correlation between the popularity of smart phones and increased rate of suicide and depression knowledge young

that's funny. good for her. >> authorities in sea isle city trying to catch a kite oath ee running loose on the beach, spotted between 39th and 40th street. police in animal control haven't been table catch it, just yet. it keeps running into the dunes there, and there goes, traps have been set, you sure don't see that often, coyote on the beach. well, football season right around the corner now, that means many tailgaters and fans at home alike will be chowing down on chicken wings every sunday. that sounds good. but as don champion report, right now, the price of wings is sky high. >> chicken wings are always a hot item at wing stop, the aviation franchise start in the texas in the 90s, and has since taken off with more than 1,000 restaurant nationwide. >> keeps you coming back? >> the wings, man, they're good, really good. >> but now the same wings that built this business are biting into the bottom line.

>> back now on "eyewitness news," with dramatic video from an airport control tower showing an airplane's engine on fire. this all happened in chicago last october, fireball exploded right under the right wing there of the american airlines jet as it was preparing to take off from o'hare. well, the pilot stopped on a runway with just seconds to spare. and a passenger and crew quickly removed while everyone survived. but 20 passengers were hurt. the national transportation safety board is still investigating. well, florida is known for its sunshine, right? but when storms move in, it is also known for lightning. as we were reminded dramatically recently. here's manuel's. >> after this lightning bolt struck an airplane in fort myers recently it sent shock through airline worker knocking him to the ground. he is still recovering from third agree burns. last friday, two adult were struck near cape can after

just the pressure, on the grounds. you know, kind of took your breath away. >> in 2007, lightning struck and killed scuba diver here. one thing brown learned in his 20 years working the beach, the worse strikes can happen at the beginning, or end, of a storm. >> it look like the sun is coming out. it is clear. and then, boom, we get one last lightning strike. >> the national weather service says in any given year the odds of being struck by lightning are about one in a million. this happens to be one of the rare afternoons without a thunderstorm in this part of south florida, but the peak season for strikes goes through august. manuel, cbs news, deerfield beach, florida. >> well, this is your dose of cute for the morning. polar bears are getting some help beating this summer heat. two polar bear cubs at the buddha pest zoo were given ice cubes to cool off in the searing heat. temperatures in the hungarian capitol city reached 100 degrees friday. the two year old cubs were also given iced watermellon.

it could be seen splashing around in their enclosures eating the fruit, and matt, i would say, that's a choice snack for a hot summer day, maybe little watermellon on the menu today? >> maybe, maybe little water isolate err, you know, going to be a day for that, we're head add little bit on the wet side. here this morning, while it was hot, humid yesterday, it will be a little bit cooler today. but it is never going to be a cold summer day here in philly getting a look outside on our neighborhood network, this is margate. what you're seeing is a lack of precipitation. it is not raining down at the shore in margate here this morning. but, that's not the case for lots of us across the delaware vale. storm scan3, now showing you all of that precipitation that's out there, cold front, potent one at that, that's been biting across the delaware here this saturday morning. starting with the precipitation in philly, right around 3:00 or so. i got into work here, just about ten of 3:00. and it was dry by 3:00. though, we were seeing some heavy rain here in center city

now, the front continues to track eastward. as it does it, pushes all of the precipitation with it, heaviest rain, now, either just along the coast or just off the coast, of central new jersey at this point. you see, toms river, and back down in areas like seaside, that's where we were even just maybe 15, 20 minute ago, seeing the heaviest rain, and still some thunderstorm activity, the good news, though, that's now pushed off the coastline. now there is still some areas down to the south, you can see there, to the east of wear town, where we're getting some of the more moderate rainfall, maybe even again few rumbles every thunder in areas like long beach island, northern long beach island to start out the day. again all of the this precipitation starting to at least winds down for the most part. southwestern new jersey, few areas still getting in on that more moderate rainfall, but, for again, the most part it looks like just the few spots where we do continue to see the precipitation. philly, point to the west, looking dry, for the time being. a little bit cloudy, though,

here early on this morning, but we will see the clouds fade out. as we go through the rest of the afternoon. drier air pulls on in. >> northerly, at least maybe westerly, we will see the northerly flow, 68, right here in philly, 70s, though, back down through southern new jersey, back down into delaware, as well, 73 dover, with 75 in wildwood, because front has to come all the way through. and we haven't seen any precipitation, here are the wind speeds, still again, generally out of the south. you can see, wildwood, southerly breeze at 12 miles an hour, bouillottes of calm conditions from philly and point westwards, and again because the front is just starting to work it way through. now it, will get breeze think afternoon, you can see wind gusts by 2:00 this afternoon, 15 to 20 miles an hour, some areas could even see 25 miles an hour wind gusts, and really , hangs on through tomorrow morning. so it could be a little bit breezy to kick off our sunday, but then it gets much calmer

inside of this center city apartment building. seven fires were set in the past month alone. we're live with what authorities are now doing in hopes of catching the person responsible. as the president departs the white house for his august vacation, his attorney general issues a warning to leak ers. i'm mola lenghi with the details from the white house. >> today is saturday, august 5th, good morning, everyone, i'm jan carabeo. rainy start, but sunshine is in site. let's get right over to meteorologist, matt peterson with the eyewitness weather forecast, good saturday morning, matt, when is this rain going to mover out of here once and for all? >> once and for all probably mid-morning. i think that's what we are looking at. few light lingering showers here in philly right now, even though the heaviest rain has pushed through center city and , again, all our suburbs off to the west have actually been dry for the last maybe hour or so. but if you are in central new jersey this morning, if you're in some of the northern shore point, long beach island, areas back up toward seaside, that's where we're still seeing some of the

precipitation, but overall, this is ocean city. this is a live picture from our camera down there, on the board walk. you can see, we're not seeing any rain currently right now in the ocean city area. now, there is still cloud cover out there, little bit after hint of sunshine on the horizon, we have about four minute until the sun officially comes up. 6:04 is our sunrise today. so, again, while it is cloudy out, there still dry at the shore for a lot of the southern areas, but again, couple of showers not completely down across the area, just yet. storm scan3, shows all of the precipitation that rolled through, starting around 3:00 this morning, here in philly. and then, it has been slowly tracking across central new jersey, the heaviest rain now up toward new york city, and five borrows, but still see maybe around toms river, moderate rainfall, just off the coastline south of the toms river area. that's where we're still seeing, again, moderate to heavy rainfall. back down toward southwestern part of south jersey see moving into far northern cape
