"eyewitness news" begins with breaking news a hit and run kills a woman in center city philadelphia coming up description of the striking vehicle. and a developing story now party in a sports complex in lakewood, new jersey end in gunfire and puts four people in the hospital. and a turbulent flight for passengers on their way to philadelphia what they are saying about their ordeal in the air. and today is sunday august m jan carabao but first lets talk about this wonderful weather ahead for our sunday with meteorologist matt peterson with the forecast, good sunday morning, it feels more like fall, then summer. >> you are not kidding. outside on the sky deck dairy say it feels cool. >> i know, hard to come back in after that. >> it makes you want to stay outside, enjoy yourself, makes me wish i had a deck or patio at home thaw can sit outside,

have some coffee this morning, enjoy your breakfast on this sunday morning. so again, just a fantastic start to the day, and really big difference from what we saw yesterday at this time. we had a cold front yesterday morning that gave us showers, thunderstorms, and it was definitely a morning to be rocking and rolling from 3:00 in the morning to 6:00 or 7:00 and then we will start to quiet down as we got to the end of the morning and afternoon. high pressure in control. you can see, nothing out there we had a few, fake returns there on our radar down around baltimore area but that is what we call an anomaly. it is just a fantastic start to the day. check out our temperatures right now, mount pocono, 50 degrees. sixty-four in philadelphia. sixty-one in ac weather. sweat shirt weather to begin the day for sure. check out what we will be dealing with across the region

here in philadelphia we will see plenty of sunshine. 81 degrees. low humidity. definitely a good day to enjoy yourself if you can. shore will be great day to soak up rays on the beach. we will get to 80 degrees. humidity on the lower side of things at the beach today. and up in the poconos, again, thunder or excuse me, we have showers, that are possible tomorrow but we will go with sunshine today. 71 degrees for our high temperature in the poconos this afternoon and as i said those showers and thunderstorms are in the forecast for monday. we will break down those chance necessary just a bit, jan. >> thank you. we are following breaking news out of center city philadelphia this morning. a would mains dead after a hit /run. "eyewitness news" reporter anita oh is live at police headquarters, what kind of vehicle are police looking for >> reporter: jan, we have learned they are looking for a white jeep wrangler rubican, spare tire on the back and will now have front end damage victim is described as a

caucasian woman in her 50's according to police. this all happened just around 3:15 this morning near race and broad streets in center city. woman was pronounced dead at hahnemann university hospital, around 3:45 this morning. police source tells me that the woman is believed to be homeless and was sleeping nearby when she got up, to use the rest room and cross the street and that is when police say the car struck her. a security guard was patrolling the area at that time found that with man on the street with trauma to the head, right now there is no description of the suspect but again, the suspect vehicle is describe as a white jeep wrangler rubican with the white top, spare tire mounted in the back and front end damage. police are hoping surveillance video will help them catch this suspect that took the life of the woman in her early 50's. for now live at police headquarters i'm a national a oh for cbs-3 "eyewitness news" police are looking for gunman who shot four people in ocean county, new jersey.

shooting happen at brooke road sports complex in lakewood just after 9:30 last night. four people were at a party when shot. they were taken to monmouth medical center. detectives say that the injuries are not believed to be life threatening, police have not made any arrests just yet but they are trying to figure out what led up to this shooting. new this morning, philadelphia police are investigating a shooting in olney this shooting happened just after 1:30 this morning on the 5100 block of north eighth street. a man was shot in the hip, he was taken to the hospital and at last check he was in critical condition. so far, no arrests in this shooting but police say they have lead on possible suspects a philadelphia police officer is off the job this morning after video has emerged appearing to show that officer slamming a man in handcuffs to the ground. eyewitness news reporter alycia nieves spoke with neighbors who say they are shocked. >> reporter: concerned residents on elkheart street in the kensington section of philadelphia recorded this

cell phone video july 10th, residents were worried about the amount of officers trying to arrest a man in the middle of the street and amount of force being used. >> that was aggressive. >> reporter: nearly a month later some living on the street are still upset watching the video especially this moment when one officer is seen picking up the man who was already in handcuffs, spin ning him around, and then slamming him into the ground. the man arrested was slammed so hard he had to be taken to the hospital and was in critical condition. >> that was totally unnecessary, no harm he could have brought to them cops, nobody was in danger but to him at that point. >> reporter: philadelphia police department has now identified officer seen slamming at rested man, he is 26 year-old officer james yeager who has been with the department for four years. yeager has been suspended by the commissioner for 30 days. >> that was an ugly night and that guy should have just cooperated and we wouldn't be here today. >> reporter: fraternal order of police is defending officer

yeager warning people not to rush to judgment over this video because it may not show all of what led up to this incident. fop add man being arrested was resisting and officers were trying to arrest him for a drug related owe even if. >> we have seen officers go over board prior and we deal with that on a case by case bases but this one here we will make sure that we represent the officer, officer yeager, all the way through. >> reporter: again, police commissioner has suspended officer yeager for 30 days but intend to dismiss him from the department completely after. that fop plans to fight the department on that and it does have a high success rate in doing so. outside police headquarters alycia nieves for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". in other news this morning 10 people are recovering today after a flight to philadelphia , from greece ran into severe turbulence. american airlines flight 759 from greece landed safely at philadelphia international airport saturday afternoon.

passengers say flight attendants had just served drinks when that turbulence started and that threw beverages every where. three passengers and seven crew members went to the hospital for evaluation. >> ice cream shop in springfield wants your help finding a group of young thieves, surveillance video, in this creamery on baltimore pike there shows four boys walking up to the store counter, one reaching in the tip jar, the others check that jar one more time before running away, the store says this all happened around 8:00 wednesday night, if you have any information, please call the police. well, search continues today for a man who killed, two people, and left a third in the hospital, take a look at this, the delaware county district attorney's office says that this man is the shooter, the violence happened friday night at fourth and walnut street in colwyn. a 20 year-old and 16 why year-old were both killed, a 15 year-old is hospitalized in critical condition. man moving in a block away heard it all happen and his brother is a paramedic and

helped one of the victims. >> i just heard gunshots, six or seven, pop, pop, pop, pop. >> he ran out here with his emergency bag and ran straight to the person who was shot and he said, he was shot in the head, and when he got to the ambulance he was breathing. >> investigators do not yet have a motive for this shooting but they say this may have been a feud between two rival groups. the united nation has imposed tough new sanction as begins north korea following its launch of an intercontinental ballistics missle. as danielle nottingham reports they include a ban on exports worth over $1 billion. >> reporter: north korea will pay heavy price for launching a ballistics miss until to space more than a week ago. on saturday u.n. security council leveled crippling sanction as begins kim jong un regime. >> this time council matched its word and actions.

>> reporter: resolution calls for complete ban on coal and other exports totaling more than a billion dollars and prohibits north koreans from receiving work permits, china, north korea's sole alley sports the sanctions. >> the fact that the council adopted this resolution unanimously demonstrates that the international community is united, in its position, regarding the nuclear issue of the peninsula. >> reporter: missle launched on july 27th was airborne for nearly four minutes before splashing in the sea of japan and came dangerously close to an air france flight with hundreds of people on board. pentagon officials believe this latest test demonstrates north korea may have the capability of reaching u.s. mainland. arms control expert jeffery lewis. >> we're in a relationship where we can destroy them and they can destroy us. we not like it but that is where we are. >> reporter: secretary of state rex tillerson left the door opened for talks with north korea but said they

fbi is looking for suspects after an explosion rocks a muslim community center outside minneapolis. this all happened, as members prepared for morning prayer, as wendy gilette reports, members say this isn't the first time, that this mosque has been threatened. this broken window is is what left after someone threw a bomb inside a mosque in a

minneapolis suburb early saturday morning. >> our congregation members came out immediately and we saw a truck, fleeing from the parking lot, running at high speed. >> reporter: witnesses say device that exploded was thrown in the office at daral farouk months income blooming ton. there were as many as 20 people inside, preparing for morning prayers l able to extinguish the flames before fire fighters arrived. no one was injury. the fbi is leading the investigation. >> at this point our focus is to determine, you know, who and why. >> reporter: those affiliated with the mosque say it has been target of hate messages, e-mails, and calls and they say they believe this incident is a hate crime. >> hate's not okay, we need a better america, targeting people because of their race, ethnicity or their religion is absolutely unamerican. >> reporter: saturday afternoon several leaders from the area gathered to show their support. >> an attack on a mosque is an

attack on a synagogue is an attack on a church, is an attack on all faith communities. >> reporter: mosque mostly serves people in the somalia community, a $10,000 reward is being offered to help catch the suspect. wendy gilette for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". a sinkhole in florida that swallowed up two homes is still growing and now another two homes have been condemned, the sinkhole opened last month in landolakes, north of tampa, sinkhole is 260 feet wide at its widest point, vibration from his trucks, construction may be to blame there, crews plan to push a barge out in the hole today and will help with the clean up efforts there. hundreds of the fire fighters battling the recent wittier fire are battling poison oak rashes. fire fighters say poison plant got in the smoke and eras fire burned in santa barbara county , california. while it is not uncommon way fire fighters get the rash,

more than 400 fire fighters had to be treated, one fire fighter called it a hazard of the job as if fire fighting hazard aren't bad enough when it rains, it pours. >> absolutely. >> we're not talking about rain. >> no rain, we're talking about cooler weather. about an hour ago we will do our first main weather segment we will put a pole on twit tore see if people were okay were not seeing 90's the rest of the summer and so far votes are coming in. it is about 60 -- excuse me, 70/30 that the 90's on the way out are a good thing. jan, i know were you hoping we would get another 89 on degree day but i don't know, people are speaking and they are not necessarily agreeing with you. but we will have a nice day today. yesterday we got to 79 degrees in the afternoon, that was well below your average of 87. so again it was a cool day on saturday, after, the rain came , through, and today is once again going to be very comfortable.

81 degrees, decent sunshine for us, low humidity. what does that mean? practically perfect sunday. sunny skies, warm temperatures that light breeze to go with the lower humidity, too. get outside and enjoy your sunday because things will be changing as we go through nighttime and into monday where another system brings south showers and thunderstorms. our current set up relatively nice. high pressure in control. low area pressure, across the southern plains, that is going to come east and as it does it will bring showers and thunderstorms. you can see it here by 7:00 still spiraling out there in the midwest with you it comes in, three or 4:00 in the morning we will start to see showers moving in, to the far western suburbs, and then, once we move through the afternoon hours we will see here by 8:00 o'clock we are still looking for thunderstorms, north and west of the city, again, afternoon hours, tomorrow, that is when we will see heaviest rain and when we will see most of the thunderstorm activity. by tuesday morning at 7:00 on tuesday just some cloudy skies , and then through the afternoon hours on tuesday we

will see some clear conditions and sunshine will be in the forecast for us on tuesday, as well. our rain amounts with this, this will be just a model, don't take this as gospel but we are looking for those heaviest amounts to stay south of the city but we could see an around an inch of rain. here in philadelphia and lancaster and reading would i take this with a big grain of salt, not going to see 4 inches of rain in lancaster and reading but could see few areas of local heavy downpours so be prepared throughout the day on monday. eighty-one for the high, with the rain we get only to 78 on monday afternoon. looking really nice for middle of our workweek check this out low to mid 80's, sunshine for us out there as well, our next chance for some showers is going to come as we get toward the end of our workweek there friday and saturday as well, so jan, it doesn't look bad today and we just got to get through tomorrow. >> thanks, matt. it is 7:18. time to see how traffic is moving, with amanda mueller in

the cbs-3 traffic center, hi there, amanda. >> we are moving just fine, pretty gorgeous day for our drive so far. you should not run into many obstacles but we are not totally clear. this is an overturn vehicle on old york road and welsh road in abington near willow grove mall, 611 is closed in both directions at old rush road, use rockwell road as your alternate. and we are dried out for the most part from yesterday's messy situation on the roadways we still have a few problems persisting throughout the area, namely in delaware near new castle airport road between 95 and college boulevard is completely closed due to flooding, there is in word when that might reopen but basin road is your alternate. back to philadelphia we are taking a live look at the boulevard, drivers have no issues here, rest of your majors are cleared as well including vine 76, 95, 202, 30 and turnpike. bridges in and out of the city clear as well. mass transit looking good for the most part but there are some bus detour this is

contender but instead i'm your guys meteorologist this sunday morning. it is a wonderful, sunny day albeit a little bit cool to start out, grab sweat shirt stepping outside the door this morning. clear skies and storm scan three shows you quiet conditions, way different from yesterday afternoon where we are, excuse me yesterday morning where we had showers, thunderstorms with that cold front that came across delaware valley. in showers or thunderstorms in store today, just dry air, high pressure overtop of us. those dew points are in the 50 's and you will feel that here on the morning hours and then we will be continuing to see temperatures, that slowly, rise, but right now, again, you will need a sweat shirt reading at 57, allentown at 57 as well, here we are at 646789 our lone70 wildwood where we are there at the dot. ac airport 63. definitely a very nice morning albeit cooler start. we will be up up to zero seven

around 3:45. police tell me that this woman was homeless, sleeping nearby when she crossed the street and used the rest room and that is when they car reportedly struck her. security guard then found her on the street with trauma to the head but he was not ready to speak with us on camera but we did see him at the scene earlier this morning. there is no description of the suspect although again the vehicle that police are looking for is a new model light jeep wrangler with front end damage white top and spare tire on the back. if you have any information you are asked to call police. live this morning i'm anita oh for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> busy area, hopefully surveillance video can help out, thank you. this morning peco restored power to almost everyone in the philadelphia region, severe weather left more than 10,000 people, in the dark yesterday morning, as "eyewitness news" reporter cleve bryan explains a neighborhood in doyletown took the biggest hit. >> a crack and all of the sparks and all was pretty

scary. >> reporter: it was a bang and then lights out for a doyletown neighborhood after a tree took out power lines, utility poles and nearly landed on the house across the street from marie. >> i hard a big loud crack and then all of the sparks from the electrical wires. >> reporter: peco says at one point more than 10,000 customers who power in the region because of an early morning storm, of the 4,000 homes and businesses without power in bucks county the majority were in the doyletown area. >> i who most of our traffic signals, good part of the doyletown boro with parts of the township are out of power. >> reporter: north street and chapman avenue happened to fall less than a quarter mile from a peco substation on route 313, tree crew where is on stand by while peco tried to reroute power and make these lines, safe. >> once this tower is known to be totally out we were going to cut this tree up and get it out of the way to replace their telephone poles and such >> reporter: you can see all of the trees close to the power lines have been trim over the years to try to

prevent limbs from falling down and incoming out power but when a whole tree comes down it is a power mess. just this week peco announced plans for 1.8 million-dollar worth of tree trimming including work in doyletown. >> i'm glad it didn't fall on their house, yeah, this is a big tree over there but that makes doyletown so beautiful. >> reporter: bob christic and his daughters addison and abby wanted to see what was causing their home to lose power. what do you do on a summer day without electricity. >> go swimming. >> reporter: in doyletown cleve bryan for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". the storms also made driving on the schuylkill expressway, even more of a headache then it is usually. several lanes were closed after they flooded there, the closures happened on the eastbound lanes in montgomery county, you can see there eyewitness video shows what drivers were dealing with just flooded road, this was right before the belmont avenue exit there is still so much more to come on here cws3

delaware county celebrated its veterans with a parade and ceremony in ridley township. service members enjoyed some food right off grill at third annual veterans appreciation day, several local law enforcement agencies joined them at vfw hall 928 and organizers say the event is crucial in helping veterans find local resources. >> my job is pretty ease any terms of the being able to help veterans but it is difficult when they are not aware that i'm there. i will tell you it is really remarkable as a veteran, to see how much these people really care. the event there started off with a met or cycle procession and parade. the independence sea port museum helped celebrate coastguard's 227th birthday. on august 4th 1790 congress established the coastguard, yesterday coastguard servicemen were invited to speak, take questions there, according to the u.s.

coastguard it is oldest organization, of the federal government and until the navy department was established in 1798 it served as nation's only armed force afloat. a local fraternity chapter gathers community members in camden for a day of family, fun, it was second annual camden community barbecue and park organized by brothers of the fraternity. hundreds, showed up to grab a burger while kid there hopped on the moon bounce. organizers also provided resources like voter registration and veterans services, a great day for all of those activities, yesterday , matt and even better day for our sunday. >> absolutely if you wanted to do a picnic today, it will be a fantastic day for. that get out, enjoy it, because we are going to see some showers as we head in the beginning of the workweek. lets talk about how nice saturday was and how wonderful today is going to be. our eyewitness weather watchers are up early, on this

wonderful, sunday morning, talking to us about cool temperatures, across the area lets start off north of the city, 55 degrees this morning, john's up in perkasie with that sunshine, to go with that cool 55, and what does he to have say? a nice crisp start to the day. usually that is not an adjective we use in august that is something we think about maybe in the fall but again a nice cool start to the day there, it is 59 degrees at helen's house north of the city as well with plenty of sunshine, it is a gorgeous morning, cool, dry, calm wind, she says you have to get outside and i definitely don't disagree with her, and we will go back down to the shore where it is never a bad day when you can wake up looking at the beach, james in ocean city is saying 64, few extra cloud for him. 64 degrees and thinks august, yes but it feels fantastic out there, folks. our average high for this time of year is 86. we will get to 81, later this

afternoon. so we are going to be below average. we have not seen 90 degrees here in philadelphia since july 23rd. it has been a wild, since we have seen 90. and this is the first time where we have not had our average high temperature be 87 o we're kind of past that peak heating. it doesn't mean that 90's are not possibly in the forecast, our last day of 90's on average usually happens in the beginning of the september. we still have a number of months where we could be looking for temperatures around 90 but they will not be here this week. by the time we will get to the beginning of the september, i said we could still possibly see 90 but by sixth of september we are averaging a hive of 81. in october. seventy. by october 6th for an average high temperature there waking up in rehoboth this morning, folks already getting out, enjoying a wonderful, wonderful start to the day outside on the beach there. it is just a fantastic afternoon down the shore, mostly sunny.

seventy-five to 80 degrees on the sand, a light breeze out of the southwest, 75 degrees for that water temperature. so again not feeling all that bad but pretty close to our air temperature today. might feel cooler then it actually is, of course, sun screen a necessarity with that sunshine. uv index is high. swimming wye life garden though rip current risk for today is lower. our current set up, is there not too much going on across the delaware valley, a big difference in 24 hours ago. reason is high pressure it is in control down just to our south. so we will see that eventually those flying off the coast line, and then as it does ate laos low pressure that is right now spiraling through southern plains, that is eventually going to comee and brings the warm front first and then the cold front and then we will see showers, and thunderstorms, throughout the day, it looks like on our monday. so again, not too much happening here for to us day, here comes the system through the night time hours, three or 4:00 in the morning we will start to see showers out to the west in the far north, you can see by 5:00, maybe some

carroll, you have two more friend here today. >> i do. we will be talking about the dog, and right now i want to introduce everybody to just a phenomenal woman. thinks megan ryan, she has a full-time job, she's a great colorist. and, more than that, you volunteer and have for a long time at pennsylvania spca, and why do you do it, and my number one question is and so many other peoples number one question is don't you go in there and just it is like so hard to see these eyes and get home again, how do you do it. >> when i first started 10 years ago it was definitely a struggle getting over that hump of these poor sweet faces in the cage but if you go a few times and see that dog light up when they see you, i'm like doing the right thing this is amazing.

i'm so happy i'm here. this is what i'm doing. >> you had a good question. >> when i see this i think how do i volunteer, is it an easy process, can i walk in or something i have to do on line first. >> there is a lincoln our web site for new volunteers, send us an e-mail, volunteer coordinator gets back and we set up, like a structure way to start walking dogs, handling dogs. >> and they want to go in and volume they are with dogs. so you can just volunteer with cats and we will talk about that in a second. you think maybe i won't be able to control the dogs. i don't know that much. i want to just love them. do you train people too. >> exactly. we have a system that sets you up and dogs up for success. we don't want anyone to come in and feel overwhelmed that they are handling a dog that may be too much for them or dog that isn't as active for them. this is a system you will do well with. >> what are things you can do?

carroll mentioned walking the dog. what are different activities or responsibilities. >> is there so much. it can be something as simple as taking them in the play run , throwing ball around or frisby, we have an agility course for them which is amazing. even just sitting with them, sitting, petting, and more for us and then for them. >> i know you do it with the dog we have brought in as our studio model, today and you will go pack walk. you get them off site and go in the group with the other volunteers. >> oh, it is by far most fulfilling thing that i do there. i have built friendship was these other volunteers, and with these dogs, they know, when that day comes, they are so excited. >> how great is that because these animals have to be caged for some time just to get them out there to be normal animals >> amazing. >> you do learn that. i want to show you these are three adoptable animals, i have video because you know each one of these dogs, and

let's roll that video. who is this. >> this is bruce. he is, he is so silly, sweet, he definitely could benefit from some training but he is a great, great boy. >> yes. >> yes. >> he is three years old. he has a lot of energy, and probably, adults and maybe some teenagers but people who know what they are doing and love a big dog. he is very big. >> who is our next little friend here. this is diesel. >> diesel is also great. he is one of the dogs we use for dog play groups. he would be amazing with older teenagers, adults and definitely another dog because that is where he would thrive. >> he is also three years old. >> yeah. >> and each one because they come from different environments and that sort of thing. you as a volunteer if people want to adopt and talk to the volunteer the volunteer knows the ins and outs and can recommend this dog but maybe you may be more interested in

the other dog. and here is the next dog abe they vary similar. >> they really do. >> but they are different. >> this is boo, he is definitely a staff and volunteer favorite. there is nothing to not like about him. he is just a big gentle giant. he takes treats beautifully, he walks great on leash. he is awesome. >> if people come and they see these dogs and they see volunteers, probably a volunteer shirt or something and somebody says hey, you know, i have got this kind of a family. i know you have an adoption counselor but they see some people out every week with these dogs. >> for sure. >> we have a lincoln their bio s with a volunteer e-mail. so go on their web site and you can see there is my e-mail i will really give you more insight before you had even make it down to the shelter. >> how much of a commitment at times because people were all timelessed people say i love to do it but i can't, how flexible is shelter in
