good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquaters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne marie green. a possible tornado left behind serious damage in salisbury, maryland. severe weather struck the city taking down trees and damaging homes. it's the latest in powerful storms. >> a possible tornado hit salisbury, maryland early monday afternoon. >> the winds picked up. we felt the glass shattering on the building. the awnings were almost ready to lift. >> reporter: this video captured by the city police department shows the aftermath. downed power lines and trees ripped from their roofs. the force even caused this car to lift right over another. >> it's totally unnatural. >> reporter: while some businesses were heavy damaged, his bike shop was spared. >> being right behind us and having our building take no damage is truly a blessing. >> reporter: in tulsa, oklahoma

a surprise ef-2 tornado tore through 7 miles of the town early sunday injuring at least 30 people and damaging more than 70 businesses. 8 people had to be rescued from this tgi fridays after the roof collapsed during the storm. celia daniel managed to crawl to safety. >> something just hit me right in the back of my head and we went flying. >> reporter: the twitter did not trigger warning see reirens. the tornado was low to the ground and intensified quickly. >> any time we have these tornadoes we are a few minutes behind the first one and then we can be faster. >> reporter: in texas heavy rains flooded roadways prompting rescues like this one where firefighters pulled a man to safety with their ladder truck. also knocked out power to thousands. cbs news, tulsa, oklahoma. >> in mexico a drenching tropical storm named franklin

continues to move ashore. franklin made land fall on the east coast. it's topped sustained winds of 60 miles per hour. it could dump 12 inches of rain in some areas. the storm expected to weaken as it moves over the peninsula. three u.s. marines that died in the crash off the coast of australia have been identified. they include first lieutenant benjamin cross and corporate nathan ordway. both members of the flight crew. plus ruben valasco. it crashed trying to land on a ship during a training exercise. the marines plan to bring the wreckage to the surface. president trump appears to be picking a new political battle. this time its with democratic senator richard bloomenthal of connecticut. >> reporter: president trump went on a twitter rant attacking

a democratic senator. he wrote never in u.s. history has anyone lied or defrauded voters like senator richard bloomenthal. he told stories and it was all a lie. he cried like a baby and begged for forgiveness like a child and now he judges collusion. he said on cnn the investigation into russian interference in the presidential election is necessary. >> they involved propaganda and hacking into our voting machines or at least an attempt to do it and potential collusion by the trump campaign. >> reporter: senator bloomenthal apologized in 2010 for saying he served in the vietnam war. he held a news conference monday to discuss a bill that would protect special council robert mueller from being fired by president trump. >> our national security and the rule of law are at stake and i am not going to be distracted or bullied by these stories. >> reporter: the president tweeted that his base is growing

despite what he calls fake news from the new york times, washington post and all the major television news outlets except fox. he also wrote that he would be in new york next week for meetings during his 17 days in new jersey on what the white house calls a working vacation. cbs news, the white house. president trump promised during his campaign the white house would help solve the nations opioid epidemic. today he'll take a step toward helping to fulfill that pledge. hannah has the latest on that. >> good morning, president trump's drug commission says it's an epidemic that's become a national crisis requiring aggressive federal action. they're urging the president to declare a public health emergency. president trump gets a briefing on the opioid crisis today from health and human services secretary tom price. the president's budget asks for $10.7 billion for drug treatment.

a $200 million increase but it would cut 167 million from abuse prevention. >> we have a 9/11 scale loss of life every 3 weeks. >> reporter: a report from new jersey governor chris christie, chair of the opioid commission says that from 2000 to 2015 more than half a million people died of drug overdoses. opioids account for a majority of the deaths. jeff sessions announced the unit that will use data and analytics to find doctors overprescribing opioids for profit. >> we're coming after you. we'll reverse these devastating trends with every lawful tool we have. >> reporter: opioids are why it's focused so much attention on our borders. >> we're working with the congress on legislation to have better and tighter controls. >> reporter: the president's opioid commission asked mr.

trump to declare a national health emergency. the president has yet to respond. >> according to a study from generations united it's estimated that due in part to the opioid catastrophe at least 2.5 million children nationwide re being raised by a relative other than their parents. thank you so much, hannah. a man hunt is underway in missouri for a man accused in the deadly shooting of a police officer during a traffic stop. officer gary michael died sunday after stopping a driver near clinton about 75 miles southeast of kansas city. ian mccarthy was charged in the killing. authorities say he is armed and dangerous. and northwestern university says a professor accused in the stabbing death of a chicago man has been fired. he appeared in a california courtroom yesterday and waived extradition back to new york. he faces a murder warrant issued

in chicago in the july stabbing. his lawyer says he plans to plead not guilty. he and another man are accused in the murder. internet giant google fired a male engineer that wrote a controversial memo attacking the idea of gender diversity. he wrote there are biological causes behind gender inequality in the tech industry. he said he was terminated for gender stereotypes but believes the move was political. he is exploring possible legal action against google. google declined to comment on the case. 7 houses have been condemned in florida thanks to paso county's largest sinkhole in 30 years. two homes were condemned saturday followed by 3 more on sunday. the sinkhole now stretches to 260 feet at its widest point. >> if you look at the 30 and 40 year pictures here apparently some of those homes were located

the dallas morning news reports the death of a third boy scout after their sailboat struck an overhanging power line. they were on an east texas lake. the victims have not been identified. the utility has not explained why the line was in proximity to boats. the new york times says improved dna tests helped to identify another 911 victim. more than 2700 people died in the 2001 attacks but the remains of 1,100 victims have not been positively identified. city hall was slow to respond when heavy rain hit. the first flash flood warning was issued more than three hours after a fierce thunderstorm started saturday. by then many streets were already indated. city officials admit they were caught off guard. the columbus dispatch says ohio state scientists found a way to turn skin cells into any type of cells the body might

really want to know do you? takes the fun out of it. on the cbs money watch game of thrones scripts are leaked and tesla turns to the junk bond market. good morning roxanna. >> good morning, here on wall street the markets made gain with the s&p reaching a record high. the dow stretched it's streak of closing highest to 9. the index picked up 25 points. the s&p ended 4 points up and the nasdaq gained 32. tesla wants to fuel up on junk bonds. the electric car maker will raise about $1.5 billion through it's first ever offering of the bonds. junk bonds are higher risk investments that offer higher yields. tesla is seeking cash to ramp up production of its new model 3 sedan. they're betting investors will buy the bonds on expectations the car will be a hit. it's bought miller world. the first acquisition in the 20 year history.

experts say that could hurt quantity but could improve quality. >> reporter: a summer heat wave forecasters have nicknamed lucifer is baring down on italy and bedeviling grape farmers. they jump started this harvest an average of ten days early and production is taking a hit. this spokesman from italy's agricultural lobby said the high temperatures created a drastic decline in production of 10 to 15%. violent hailstorms and spring frosts also hurt some of the grapes. italy's annual wine harvest is the biggest in the world and the industry employees about 1.5 million people. but despite the heat wave wine makers still see the glass as half full. the quantity may not be there they say but it could still be a very goodyear in terms of quality. that's because excessive heat prevented fungus and disease from spreading on the vines.

our top story this morning a possible rare tornado left behind serious damage in salisbury, maryland. severe weather struck yesterday uprooting trees and tossing cars. it's the latest in a summer of powerful storms that have hammered the u.s. opioids are taking a heavy to on children in this country. they're not addicts but their children are. dean reynolds is in ohio with more on the innocent victims of a drug epidemic. >> on a winding trail in southeastern ohio four children symbolize the devastating consequences of the opioid epidemic. they are living with their aunt susan now. she and her husband are raising them as their own because their

parents are heroin addicts. >> it's heartbreaking. it's heartbreaking to see that parents will take the drugs over the children. >> reporter: she is talking about her own brother. >> what do you tell those children about their parents? >> reporter: i tell them that their parents love them but they're not able to take care of them. >> she is raising a fifth child, a boy named ronny that just turned 1. his mother is an addict somewhere in town. it's estimated that due in large part to the opioid catastrophe at least 2.5 million children nationwide are being raised by grandparents or other relatives. but some had no relatives that will take them in and go directly to foster care. mike is ohio's attorney general. >> we think 50% of the kids in foster care in ohio are there because one or both parents are drug addicts. >> reporter: 14,000 children are in agency custody statewide up 14% in five years. caseworkers are stressed to the

limit. >> we're removing 1 to 3 infants a month born addicted to drugs. the infant mothers a lot of them we never see again. they never come to visit. they just leave their child and continue on with their addiction. >> you have been doing this for 26 years. is the current situation the worst you have ever seen it? >> yes. >> reporter: suzanne valley agrees this is not a gathering storm, the storm is upon us. >> i do foster care but it's not enough because of so many kids that need somebody. >> reporter: kids like jack. we won't show his face because he's only 14. he's been in and out of foster care four different times. >> i called my dad one day and i was like dad why can't you just try and get me? and he was like i just can't stop. the drugs overtook him. and i was like you're one messed up dad to pick drugs over your
