time being anyway, south of philadelphia. it is down into delaware, dunn toward southern shore points, that is where we are starting to see early on here in the day some light precipitation. here in philadelphia we are dry and even as we head further off to the north and west it really dries out. storm scan three maybe shows a break in the cloud, up toward poconos, overall it doesn't look like we will be seeing too much sunshine. it will be an overcast afternoon. take a look outside, kutztown area 65 degrees but muggy. we have had showers through overnight hours in the lehigh valley and now it is a foggy start to our saturday in a few areas just north of philadelphia driving around, maybe in the lehigh valley, this morning, just take a eye out and see what is going on, and, and, and temperatures, and, 51 in the poconos, and shore at 75.

right now if you have a lot to do this morning. prime time to head out and have the road to yourself. in the traffic center i'm amanda mueller new back to you update now on a story we have been following all morning long a with man is in stable condition after being shot three times overnight, in an apparent home invasion in northeast philadelphia. "eyewitness news" reporter anita oh is live this morning with the very latest, anita. >> reporter: good morning, jan , police say 58 year-old woman who happens to work in security at family court is recovering at the hospital from at lee a couple of gunshot wounds this all happened at 8500 block of somerdale avenue in northeast philadelphia, police say they responded around 12:30 this morning. they say victim was in bed when she noticed her window was open. when she closed it she heard several gunshots and she was shot once in the left arm and once in the abdomen and once near her chest. suspect then tried to get

inside the home but was unsuccessful. that 58 year-old is listed in stable condition at jefferson hospital, her husband luckily was not hurt. doctor george fuks of the philadelphia police said suspect had to put in some effort to fire those shots. >> right new we don't have any suspects. we do have a scene, we have the actual screen, the big hole and it appears that someone would have to actually climb on to a chair to actually fire into the bedroom area. >> reporter: police did find one of the bullet holes went through the pillowcase of that victim. she's recovering from this home invasion, police are saying they are looking for surveillance video that may help identify the suspects, but if you have any information, call the police. live from police headquarters, i'm anita oh for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". thanks very much. meantime search continues for suspect wanted in the shooting in northeast philadelphia at a target store

there. the chaos unfolded outside of the bustleton avenue tarring, gunfire erupted in the parking lot sending one man to the hospital. "eyewitness news" reporter alexandria hoff has details. >> i went to the back of the store. closest exit that is where i was going. >> reporter: brittany, her four year-old son and grand mother were among dozens blind sided by sound of gunfire. while shopping inside target store on bustleton avenue around 3:30 p.m. >> the alarms go off, police come in and we waited. >> reporter: three sheltered in place in the stockroom in the back of the store, police and swat units arrived and placed the property on lock down. >> we have one victim she's in stable condition at aria torresdale and it began with the fight that was outside and not inside. >> reporter: according to commissioner richard ross a fight between three to five males in the parking lot led to the shooter firing five

shots, one struck the victim and unclear if he was intended target. >> that shooter we believe, did escape but there are no other shooters that the time. >> reporter: as evening pushed own store was closed off with police tape and investigators remained close to two cars left sitting in the parking lot one with the back window shattered and both mark with the same unique windshield decal. alexandria hoff for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". police are investigating a deadly officer involved shooting in north philadelphia , this shooting happened, just after 5:00 o'clock yesterday afternoon on the 3100 block of north darren street. officers approached the man who had stolen a car, they say that suspect tried to take an officer's weapon but then started to cooperate, however, police say suspect then started to fight with a second officer, shots fired and suspect was killed. a special event brought together the youngest survivors of the gun violence in philadelphia. super heroes against gun

violence, included child shooting victims and their families all in super hero gear. event is in hunting park and was organized by family of seven year-old mahaj brown, within year ago he was struck by 10 bull frets a ak-47 assault rifle in east germantown. >> i just felt like as a parent that went through it, it was my job to step up, speak out on behalf of all parents going through it. some people kid didn't make it but mine was lucky enough to have made it, seeing as though he was within of the most tragic events that happened last summer. >> according to his mother brown as under gone 32 surgeries since the shooting and still has more to go, he was one of the 94 kid shot in philadelphia in 2016. in other news this morning a judge has scheduled a contempt hearing for advisor who lived in the penn state fraternity house where a pledge died back in february. defense lawyers say inform

advisor tim bream has not responded to efforts to get him to testify. sixteen former beta theta pi fraternity members charged in the death of the 19 year-old timothy piazza returned to their preliminary hearing on center county on friday. defense attorneys want him to testify about what he knew about the events leading to piazza's death, judge is working to determine if there is enough evidence to send this case to trial. a large crowd of alt right supporters wielding torches marched through university of virginia campus last night. police say hundreds of protesters paraded to the thomas jefferson statue on the steps of the university's rotunda. the march comes on the eve of unite the right rallies set to take place tonight at emancipation park in charlottesville, and thousands are expected to attend that rail, police made no official statement on how many people were arrested there last night chinese state media says it told president, its president told president trum that all side should avoid rhetoric or action that will worsen tension was north korea

after air force two struck a bird friday evening. just as the plane lifted off from indianapolis, passengers on both side reported seeing a bright flash outside the plane plane report looked hit a bird on take off and then was sucked in the engine. the engines on air force two are designed continue on guess the occasional bird and there was in damage to the aircraft. secretary of state rex tillerson says u.s. diplomates in had van after been victims of an attack. tillerson's statement is most definitive comment made about mysterious health issues that left diplomates there with hearing loss, and tillerson's comment also comes two days after the state department issued a vaguely worded statement saying there were quote incidents which have caused a variety of physical symptoms.

on the healthwatch now, research finds more americans are dying from colon cancer at young ages and researchers just don't know y as health reporter stephanie stahl explains, medical advances are not preventing colon rectal cancer rates from rising. >> reporter: colonoscopies that find lesions save lives but new research for american cancer society says that colon rectal cases and deaths are up among younger people, and it is not because of increased screenings. the reason for the rise in both incident and death rates remains unclear. >> these are, findings. >> reporter: doctor john marks , chief of colon rectal surgery at main line health says there have been important advances in screening and treatments prevention is all about early detection. >> i think that with better attention to symptoms and screening, at the age as young than 50 we are catching things earlier and seeing them in a different age demographic. >> reporter: new increase in death rates from colon cancer among younger people applied to just white patients, blacks

and other races did not see the up tic. >> having a series of these, events changes your concept of life. >> reporter: after being diagnosed with advanced colon cancer michael rosen garden decided to fight back with exercise and diet. research shows lifestyle changes can improve survival rates. another study found that colon cancer patient that is ate two serving of tree nuts a week had a 46 percent lower chance of relapse. almond, walnuts and cash another control insulin levels and believed insulin can fuel growth of colon cancer cells. >> just because you have malignant disease does not mean you should give up. >> reporter: main risk for developing colon cancer include age and family history doctors say there are usually no warning signs until it is advanced which is why, colon oscopies are so important if you have concerns it is best thaw check with your doctor. i'm stephanie stahl for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". turning to weather now a

bit have the glummy start to our saturday, matt is there a better time to get out there and do your outdoor activities >> if you are able to get out before it gets a little bit warmer, you will be better off but even into the afternoon, jan it looks okay. it will be cloudy, damp, dryer and then muggy but over all the rain is not going to last all day long. it is not a wash out of the day, anymore we see precipitation will not be like a torrential downpour it will just be light showers, and that is exactly what we're seeing here this morning. eyewitness weather watchers are talking about temperatures that are on the warm side of things we will call it in the 60's and zero seven's and we have had some rain amounts as well, newark delaware, delores house she has had over a tenth of an inch. most of the rest of the weather watchers say they have not even a tenth of an inch have rain. same for allen in delran just under a tenth of an inch, and bill in, carding ton at .07

inches of the rain. precipitation we have seen for the most part has been light, and it will continue to be that way as we go throughout the rest of the day time hours outside right now this is margate on the neighborhood network it is not the best beach day unfortunately, we usually like to talk about some nice conditions on saturday, a lot of, of course rentals start today saturday to saturday, folks heading down to the shore in new jersey or down in delaware as well but it does look like it will be a glummy saturday for us. we will see that in margate. here is your beach forecast 80 y and humid. you might think that is not too bad but cloud cover and some showers and maybe even a very small chance for isolated thunderstorm as we head in the second half of the afternoon down the shore, it means that if you are out there and trying to enjoy it a little bit just be prepared for again that chance for shower or that second half of the afternoon a

thunderstorm. storm scan three currently not too much happening across philadelphia, maybe a light shower, starting to come together now, out of the north and east corner of maryland into northern delaware. we could look for a shower here in philadelphia the in next hour or so but where we want to take you is back down in southern delaware this morning where we have decent thunderstorm moving through rehoboth area and just north of bethenny beach. this is now movinge, some thunder, lightening and maryland rate maybe at times close to heavy rainfall but not severe, this is only thing that we are seeing so far this morning that is any kind of thunderstorm activity. rest of this is what you see here, up through northern delaware back toward vineland, atlantic city, cape may, route nine very light and isolated shower activity with again not too much happening here in philadelphia or points to the north and west. future weather for us it is not a wash out of the day. see cloud cover out there. even at lunchtime a few light

showers back down toward dover , overall, even though we are not seeing anything pop up on future weather and it will be light it doesn't mean we cannot, are not completely out of the question to see a light shower across the area throughout the afternoon hours best chance for thunderstorm activity comes after five or six leading in the seven or 8:00 o'clock time frame and start out toward lehigh valley even again future weather not picking up that precipitation as we might be seeing at seven or 8:00 but is there a chance as a front comes through delaware valley as we head toward 12 midnight and 1:00 in the morning on sunday some more showers, a few isolated thunderstorms role through the middle of the night for us and then by the time we will get to five, six, 7:00 tomorrow morning so by the time sun comes up precipitation off coastline it looks like and our sunshine will be out there , on sunday afternoon and skies clear out.

philadelphia office of adult education is turning to technology to help people improve their reading skills. kyw news radio reporter justin udo shows us how. >> reporter: according to the office of adult education in philadelphia more than 500,000 people throughout the sit need to improve their skills in order to be ready for work force. >> about 40 million people across the country really want to read will in a way, that opens doors for them to the 21st century economy. >> reporter: now office of adult education is teaming with the foundation to decrease those numbers by giving eight different apps to as many people as possible in, a trial competition taking place in cities with philadelphia being a major focus. wednesday afternoon organization held a training so that people from all over the city to learn about the app and give out information to folks in their community so they can down load it and get help that they need. >> they will provide feedback to the judges about which apps are working best, which won are more effective and receive

i'm jan carabao, rainy, muggy, glummy, not the best start for a saturday. matt peterson is live on the sky deck with eyewitness weather, this definitely is not pick of the weekend, right math. >> unfortunately it is not. tomorrow will be better of the two days, jan you are right. here this morning we started day out cloudy, we had some showers early on through the middle of the night that pushed through the philadelphia area and new down in south jersey and southern delaware and maybe parts of the central delaware as well we are seeing light precipitation here early on on our saturday.

storm scan three showing that we were watching a small area of precipitation moving in southern lancaster county, chester county, northeastern maryland that is falling apart , that is good news for us because that means we will not be watching precipitation at least trying to move in the philadelphia area and as that continues to fall apart but there could still be chances for light showers here across philadelphia area and through the afternoon with a small chance for a rumble of thunder as well. i will say out here on the sky deck as i look up dairy say a few rays of sunshine trying to break through the included here, it doesn't look like a, sunny day more overcast sky then sun filled sky to say the least. temperature for us we are at 71 in philadelphia 68 in trenton. warmer toward the shore, 72 in wildwood. seventy-five in atlantic city. dew points are high. it will be a muggy saturday. we see 60's and zero seven's, that is not changing, we will see dry conditions at times here this morning but few

i-95 at broad street volume picks up there but nothing out of the ordinary, still good time to get a jump on your travel. in the cbs-3 traffic center i'm amanda mueller back to you woman shot overnight in what police are calling a home invasion in northeast philadelphia we have been following this all morning long so lets get out to "eyewitness news" reporter anita oh live at police headquarters with the very latest, anita. >> reporter: good morning, jan police have not identified that woman but 58 year-old victim happens to work in security at family court and she was shot this morning in an apparent home invasion happening in the 8500 block of somerdale avenue in the northeast section of philadelphia. police say they responded to a call around 12:30 this morning they say when they got there the victim report that had she was in bed when she noticed her window was open. when she went to close it she heard gunshots, looked down and realize she had been shot three times, once in the arm, once in the chest and once in the left side.

police say suspect then tried to get inside the home but run successful. victim is in stable condition at jefferson hospital. her husband was not injured but captain george fuks said this could have ended differently. >> once at window, window was opened but she noticed the screen was opened a little bit we don't know if she closed it but she remembers that she looked outside, didn't see anything, went back to her bed , and then next thing you know she felt a burning sensation in her arm. >> reporter: police say they also found a bullet hole in that victim's pillowcase. they are searching for any surveillance video that may help them find those suspects but no rests have been made if you know anything call police. live from police headquarters i'm anita oh for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". in other news, this morning international pressure is building to find a diplomatic solution to north

korea's nuclear program, chinese state media reports president ping says all side should, avoid rhetoric or actions to worsen tensions on the korean peninsula. president trump defended a tweet friday morning saying u.s. military is quote locked and loaded if north korea acts unwisely. north korea is promising a nuclear war if the u.s. strikes first, president met with secretary of state rex tillerson and u.n. ambassador haley to discuss the next step no one knows how close or how far we are from a possible nuclear conflict with north korea but officials in guam, that tiny island territory that kim jong unhave threatened to attack are not keeping citizens in the dark. as any rose report, guam home land security is advising people how to prepare. >> reporter: it is a small island in the pacific ocean home to less than 200,000 people and in the last few days guam has become center of the international back and forth between two countries and their missle might.

u.s. territory of guam, which is home to two military bases that cover roughly one-third of the island is no stranger to threats from north korea guam's home land security advisor says it will only take 14 minutes for a missle fired from north korea to strike the island. even with the amped up threats that have been flying this week many of the island and including the governor don't seem too phased. >> obviously i'm concerned bit and there should be concern and worries about it too but at the same time it is important that we separate is what being said in the media with the reality of what are the facts on the ground. >> there is no requirement for any increase defense threat level. >> reporter: yes. >> we have been assured by the governor that we should not worry about it so i'm pretty much putting that, taking that to heart. >> reporter: b1 bombers are ready and two page press sheet on how to try and survive if a nuclear attack happens has been provided but whatever

happens next residents remain hopeful. >> if north korea does try to launch any type of missiles, or start a war i feel like we are protected by the military. >> reporter: andy rose for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". new developments now in a deadly hit and run in center city philadelphia police have released this photo of the person of interest as well as a new better photo of the vehicle they are looking for. it is a white jeep wrangler rubicon, last sunday that jeep was involve in the hit and run that claimed life of the six three-year old ann broadrick crossing the 1300 block of race street. police say the jeep has a lot have custom work. >> this jeep had very distinct fenders, black fenders, white top and on the hood is in the middle and couple full vents on both side of the jeep hood. so, it had customization we believe after it left the

factory. >> if you have any information , about this deadly hit and run give philadelphia police a call. surveillance cameras have captured a frightening armed robbery in philadelphia's olney neighborhood this all happened at global electronics on the 5500 block of north fifth street. police say first suspect walked in asking an employee about selling an iphone, and then suddenly another man came with a gunpointing it at that worker. video shows two suspects making off with store merchandise, police are asking anyone to help identify these men to give them a call. now to an "eyewitness news" exclusive, it has been a year since an elevator malfunctioned at criminal justice center injuring a philadelphia sheriff lieutenant. "eyewitness news" reporter greg argos talked to him about how this incident change his life. >> reporter: owens family home in northeast philadelphia is under going a massive renovation. >> this will be nut master bedroom. >> reporter: entire new section of the house being added on and a project that the family never planned.

those renovations 100 percent necessary all because of an incident here at the criminal justice center august 4th of 2016 where lieutenant owens is a sheriff deputy. >> every other day get dress go to work. >> reporter: when owens stepped on the elevator inside cjc. >> i went down one step, one floor. >> reporter: elevator malfunctioned eventually crashing to the top of the elevator shaft. >> i remember holding on and after that i don't remember anything. >> reporter: owens was rushed to the hospital and remained in a coma for five weeks. >> one doctor told me you will never walk again. >> reporter: paralyzed from the way -- waist down. >> i was broken up good. >> reporter: fortunately at his side, his wife heat shore was coincidently injured in the same elevator system in 2009. >> it dropped 6 inches or so. she tripped over the ledge and then fell down and hurt her

>> for a mosquito to transmit i disease it has to become and infect itself. it has a immune system. sometimes does. those that become infect are capable of transmitting the disease. >> reporter: there are all sorts of the safe guard in place to prevent escape from doors, to air curtains to the release of carbon dioxide in the event of an emergency. it puts mosquitoes to sleep. research team has recently identified proteins in the mosquitoes that are basically the brakes for its immune system. >> we're really excited about these proteins because when we remove them from the mosquito, we're basically removing the brakes from the immune system so the immune system is going full throttle on the par side and basically making the mosquito less susceptible to these diseases and then less able to transmit these diseases. >> reporter: fun facts, project focuses on female mosquitoes in particular because they feed on blood, to lay eggs. the next step of the process is develop permanent modification to fill the population and then think about ways to use tonight

field situations. west nile virus is not being covered in the study. john mcdevitt for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". turning to the weather now , a bit muggy, rainy to start our saturday. >> yes. >> unfortunately. >> it is mosquito weather. >> i know, right. >> never good. >> summertime muggy, steamy, you know. >> i feel it. >> just annoying little mosquitoes buzzing around but good news it is only one day this weekend that we have, this kind of, dreary, and damp , and cloudy weather because by sunday high pressure moves in and it will be nice to wrap up the weekend our cbs-3 eyewitness weather watchers this morning telling bus is what going on in their backyard, including some of that precipitation, that we have been seeing. so lets take a look at this, rape amount we have seen across the delaware valley and up to the lehigh valley that is our winner this morning. that is charles house in bath who has just shy three-quarters of an inch of rain. up north, of the city, the rest of the weather watchers here around a tenth of an inch

or so for john, in tabernacle and then as we head back down into cherry hill not even a tenth of an inch, delores in northern delaware she's looking at just about .16 inches of rain, for her as well. it hasn't been a soaker of a morning, so far, but it has been cloudy, and this i just wanted to show you a great picture from lou in eagles ville area just got a brand new drone, loves sending us pictures, cloudy start for him north of the city and been cloudy for a lot of as you cross the delaware valley to start off the day as well. storm scan three shows the precipitation is south of philadelphia at this point. that has been our theme for most of the show hours. from about five, six and close to 7:00 o'clock most of the precipitation has stayed south of philadelphia. before that though, in the two or 3:00 o'clock time frame we have seen shower activity cross the metro area overall we were still watching a small area of precipitation that was trying to come out of northeastern maryland pushing into lancaster and chester counties, that has already

fallen apart, so while we could still see a light shower in the philadelphia area again , that main precipitation that we were watching is not really too much that we need to be concerned w so storm scan three takes us down, into southern delaware, and a thunderstorm down here in between rehoboth and bethenny beaches, still packing a little bit of the punch, maybe a rumble of thunder here or there and small chance for gusty winds and then of course that moderate to even at times heavy rainfall but beside this thunderstorm it is light, scattered precipitation to say the least across a line of south jersey at this point, light showers from route nine, atlantic city, back down toward cape main a beach too. waking up in avalon, stone harbor, back toward wildwood it is a wet start to the day but it will get a little bit better at times here this morning before another round of some showers can move in, later on in the afternoon and, then tonight. it is a split weekend. area of low pressure to the north. cold front draped down to the south. it pushes through as we go through the night time hours tonight and then that will allow high pressure to move in

for our sunday and will look to stick around as we head into monday, as well. so that is good news for us as we start off our workweek. what we're expecting for our saturday showers is these light showers here early on, on our saturday, most of them are going to wrap up, here relatively soon, and leaving us with just some humid conditions, through the afternoon hours, and then a pop up thunderstorm is not completely ruled out in the afternoon, because it is just going to be so humid out there and we do get stuck in the afternoon pop up thunderstorms , a locally heavy downpour is not out of the question, either. again, the keyword is here are local and pop up. they are not going to be widespread. it is not going to be something that will be a torrential downpour for the entire day. it is just if you do happen to get stuck it may be one of those afternoon thunderstorms it could pose a problem for maybe 10 or 15 or 20 minutes tops and then it will be moving along. 81 degrees for our high temperature today. light showers are out there, cloudy skies, and then afternoon rumble of thunder a possibility. eighty-five with clearing skies on sunday, so a pretty
