for not calling out the violence. and the world's fastest man is saying good-bye to the sport he loves. good morning from the studio 57 cbs news headquarters here in new york. i'm anne-marie green. the man accused of ramming a car into a crowd in charlottesville is due in court. the incident happened saturday at a rally of white nationalists. hena doba is in new york with the latest. hena, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. 20-year-old james alex fields jr. is facing charges of second-degree murder. witnesses say on saturday the driver accelerated before plowing into the crowd, killing one person and injuring more than a dozen others. the man suspected of ramming his car into a crowd in charlottesville, virginia, is schedules to appear in court

today. 20-year-old james alex fields jr. faces several charges including second-degree murder. he's accused of killing heather heyer and others. there was a plan to remove a confederate statue from the public park. vigils, real ys, and marches were held across the country in support of the victims and against hate in florida, chicago, michigan and elsewhere. >> i heard tires screech. i look up and i seen people getting thrown in the air. the only thing i could do was push my fiance out of the way.

president trump was condemned. virginia's governor called on all to take a stand. >> tell the white supremacists, the kkk, we've had enough on it. specifically condemning the extremist groups and calling for national unity. his high school teacher described him as interested in military history. >> thank you so much, hena. the ntsb and faa are helping to investigate a helicopter crash near charlottesville that killed two state troopers. it went down saturday. virginia's governor remembers the troopers and the woman killed in the car attack. >> but for this hatred and

bigotry that occurred here yesterday, berke and jay would have been home with their families. heather would have been getting up and enjoying life. >> both died at the scene. jason kessler yesterday blamed local police for failing to keep the peace during the rally saying they didn't do their job. >> what happened yesterday was the result of the charlottesville police officers refusing to do their job. they stood down and did not follow through with the agreed upon security arrangements. >> kessler is planning another news conference today in washington. he'll be joined by fellow national list leader richard spencer. lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are calling out president trump in the deadly

scaramucci is speaking out. he also urged the president to distance himself from his chief strategist steve bannon and his former employer "breitbart news." >> you've also got this bannon/breitbart influence which is a snag on the president. if the president wants to execute that legislative agenda which is so prominent for the people, then he has to move away from that sort of bannon/breitbart nonsense. >> he also said the president needs to, quote, move more into the mainstream. >> ahead, jeff sessions and the white house response to the violence. the mayor of lexington, kentucky, is planning to respond to the events in charlottesville with action. james gray wants to remove two confederate-era statues from the lawn of a former courthouse.

he's targeted john hunt morgan and john breckenridge. senior u.s. national security officials say a military confrontation with north korea is not imminent, but they're cautioning that the possibility is greater than it was a decade ago. china's president appealed for cooler heads in a phone conversation with president trump over the weekend. last week the president warned north korean leader kim jong-un that the u.s. military was, quote, locked and loaded. in iraq two american soldiers have been killed while conducting combat operations. military reports say the incident was not due to enemy contact. five other soldiers were wounded. none of them were identified. and in west africa at least 20 people were killed after suspected islamic extremists opened fire at a restaurant.

"the miami herald" reports that a powerful venezuelan lawmaker may have issued an order to have marco rubio killed. the herald obtained a memo from homeland security last month that warped about the alleged threat. the florida senator has criticized venezuela's government and said the lawmaker is a trafficker. he's a military leader who now heads the socialist party. the "washington post" says a passerby roughed uf a tourist who gave up a nazi salute. they're outlawed. a couple's suv exploded while they were transported a grill. a valve was open when the woman lit a ziggurat. their injuries are not

when we think of the opioid crisis we're talking about killing people, the average cost to treat an icu patient in 2009 was just over $58,000. in 2015, just over 92 rs. an increase of 58%. the opioid epidemic has left people sicker. the study shows hospital deaths from overdoses have doubled. >> how many people have to die or be devastated by this disease. an addict is considered almost a criminal right off the bat. that hasn't worked for treating this so far. >> reporter: the goldstein family hopes sharing his story can change drug addiction and save lives.
