greg? >> reporter: nicole and ukee, this attempted arson happened last week. august the ninth fortunately no one was injured though nine vehicles were damaged including four city cars tonight members of the atf and the philadelphia police department still searching for the suspect. >> philadelphia police say this is the man who tried burning down a building housing boning a police district and city firehouse. >> we're asking the public to look at is the clothing worn and also as he leaves the parking garage and returns back and forth his gate how he walks. >> reporter: 4:17 in the morning on august 9th. philly police lieutenant john walker says the suspect is seen leaving this police and fire station near 65th and woodland avenue in southwest philly without shoes. moments earlier vest investigators say he was trying to start what could have been deadly fire in the building's under ground garage. >> there's some flammable liquids inside he takes and he dumps along the floor and takes a sheet. he tries to ignite that.

>> reporter: throughout that morning investigators say the suspect entered the facility twice through a broken lock on the garage door. the second time he entered his face covered by a sheet while pushing a baby stroller. >> you got multiple people in that building doing work throughout the night and underground fire could have devastating results. >> it's pretty much homeless guys that go around, and they do simple things. they take things off your porches and things like that. >> reporter: police are not sure if the suspect is homeless but neighbor joe davis believes he is and he's glad someone is home surveillance camera was reporting that morning. >> if you have some cameras you can always call the police. >> reporter: now davis pushing for more to be install in the area. deterrent for any other crime in this southwest philly neighborhood. >> at least two or three properties. let's get some cameras up, because, we really don't want to be out here, you know, going fisticuffs with these you never know what can happen. >> reporter: the atf as well as the unions for both the philadelphia police department and the philadelphia fire department each offering a

$5,000 reward leading to information to the arrest of this cuss spec. if you know who he is contact philadelphia police. we're live here at southwest detectives, i'm greg argos cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> thank there are new developments in the deadly hit-and-run of a woman in center city last week. about an hour ago, police say they have located a white jeep rank blear rubicon in doling dale, delaware county but investigators have not confirmed if it is the suv that killed 53-year-old ann broderick. she was hit while crossing the street at 13th and race on the sixth of august. another one of bill cosby's lawyers asking to step down from his defense team. angela agruso who's based out of los angeles filed paper work in montgomery county requesting a withdrawal from the case. cosby's other attorney brian mcmonagle filed a motion to withdrawal on august 1st. cosby's sexual assault retrial is scheduled for november. president trump is respon responding to criticism that he failed to condemn white

supremacist groups forcefully enough another the deadly protests in charlottesville. the president engageed in combative exchange with reporters at trump tower in new york this afternoon. it comes after a white supremacist plowed his car into a crowd of counter protesters on saturday. one woman was killed. president trump was asked if he thought the all left was to blame for the violence in virginia as the alt right. >> i think there's blame on both sides and i have no doubt about it. awed group on one side and you had a group on the other and they came at each other with clubs and it was vicious and it was horrible and it was a horrible thing to watch. but there is another side. there was a group on this side. you can call them the left. you've just called them the left that came violently attacking the other group. so you can say what you want. but that's the way it is. >> the president's response overshadowed an event that was supposed to be about infrastructure. the cbs evening news will have much more on these latest remarks tonight at 6:30.

the violence in charlottesville has renewed the debate over whether to remove a statue dedicated to former philadelphia mayor and police commissioner frank rizzo. last night philadelphia city council woman hell helen gym tweeted her support to have the statue come down. critic cite allegations that rizzo treated african-americans unfairly and even brutally at times. former city councilman frank rizzo, jr., call the renewal effort and attack on his father's legacy misguided. >> i never remember my dad, um, being anything but a fair pers person. if you broke the law no matter what color you were, he made sure that philadelphia was protected. >> the rizzo statue was dedicated in 1998. it sits across the street from city hall. well not the best weather across the rei i don't know today. "eyewitness news" at independence mall where the umbrellas and rain gear were out as people made their way around the area but those storms are starting to move out. and some steamy sunshine is in

store. meteorologist lauren casey joins us now. she's tracking it all. lauren. >> thanks so much, ukee. we already have sunshine breaking out across parts of area after that wet and soggy conditions that persisted through most of the day getting a live look on our neighborhood network and the poconos brodheadsville pleasant valley sunshine in the scene and a couple of clouds in the distan distance. 76 degrees and we will see clearing skies as we head throughout the evening hours for west to east and storm scan3 confirming that for us. there's a clearing line so now sunshine has broken out carbon and monroe counties. lehigh valley, berks county, you're next and we'll continue to see these clouds exiting off to the east. still have rainfall lingering south and east of the city down the shore delaware beaches but that will trend to taper off as we head into the next couple of hours. but it was a soggy day today in doylestown. an inch and a half of rainfall dover picking up an inch and a half of rainfall. woodbine .80 of an inch in cape may county low totals for allentown. 3-inches above average for rainfall so far this month.

we just picked up less than a tenth of an -- .20 of an inch in philadelphia as we head into the evening hours that's correct rain will be coming to an end we'll see gradually clearing skies. still humid temperatures in the 70s keep the humidity for tomorrow. turn it over to sunshine and turn the temperatures up we'll talk more about a steamy wednesday in store and possibly stormy end to the week in your full eyewitness forecast coming up in just a few. ukee. >> see you then lauren broken main sends water shooting into the sky. eyewitness captured the stream of water spewing on bethel road in conchester highway 10:00 their this morning that water was shut off and crews are working to restore service to a small number of affected customers. right now there's no word on what caused the break. dozens of people now homeless after a fire ripped through a northeast philadelphia apartment complex. the overnight fire displaced about 50 people who live at canterbury court of academy road. three people were injured in the fire including a firefighter. authorities say the fire was

contained to one apartment but nine other amounts sustained extensive water and smoke dama damage. a mid rising tensions between the us and north korea, local veterans who served in the korean war or were stationed between the north and the south could be getting some much needed help. many were exposed to a toxic chemical. "eyewitness news" reporter cleve bryan has the details. i was there. and i know what happened. >> reporter: more than 14 years after the korean war reached cease fire garfield harper man add machine gun along the dee militarized zone. arriving during a resurgence of conflict in 1967, he was exposed to a extreme cold frequent gun battles and a potent chemical known as agent orange. >> we would wake up and you could smell that something had been sprayed in the air. >> reporter: he developed a skin condition that plagues him to this day and getting medical help from the veterans affairs hasn't been easy. >> you have to sort of prove to them any evidence you have that you were there and they put you

through a whole lot. >> reporter: as with vietnam the va where korean vets are presumed to have suffered agent orange exposure. harper and some other who served before that date april 6, 1968 got members of congress to help them individually. tuesday at the american legion post pemberton, new jersey, congressman tom mc arthur announce add bill to help more korean vets by moving the presumptive date to an earlier time. >> they know people were exposed. i don't know why they can't get them to change the date backwards. >> he estimates this bill could help between a thousand to 1500 korean war veterans. that may not seem like a huge must be but it's symbolic of making sure our veterans get every benefit they deserve. >> i think inch by inch is the way owen within a lot of battle glass mc arthur who raised two adoptive children from korea plans to visit the dmc in the near future. >> this is vital that we stop this dictator. >> as the man who fought north koreans harper would hate to see do today's soldiers embroiled in

"eyewitness news" at kensington's mcphearson square library when the cape kids initiative learned kids were facing challenges they stepped up to provide lessons and activities for youngsters who attend the library summer we'd reiding program. drug and alcohol prevention, anti bullying and good decision making the topics there. >> things recharge my battery it really does because it makes you -- reminds you what's important. and this is what's important. these young people here and seeing how they will ultimately be productive members of socie society. >> this year last cape kids have served into hundred students in 31 schools in our region's under

animal control workers in new jersey removed a 3-foot alligator from a motel pool in atlantic city. these are photos of the removal effort.

the gator was found swimming in the bay view inn and sweets pool this morning. the motel is on north albany avenue just a few hundred yards from lake spay. there's no word how the alligator got in the pool. but we are told he's hanging out now at the cape may county zoo. ♪ here we go. we are now less than week away from the historic solar eclipse. >> we know scientists will be studying its effects on the environment. also be watching how animals reaction to it. "eyewitness news" reporter alicia nieves headed to the philadelphia zoo to give us a peek at some of the wild reactions we may see during the eclipse. >> reporter: in just a few days millions of people will likely turn their eyes to the sky to witness the first total solar eclipse in nearly century. but what may be equally interesting to look at on monday, maybe how animals on the ground react to the rare natural

phenomenon. >> animals are very attentive to their environment, and primates and many on the animals are pretty smart. i can imagine them being interested in something that is different. they'll recognize it as this is not part of our normal experience. >> reporter: dr. andy baker at the philadelphia zoo is among the many animal experts around the country that will be paying close attention to wildlife during the eclipse. >> it's going to be fascinating. going to be interesting to see whether we see animals that are somewhat confused or they just accept that, okay, things are a little different today. >> reporter: dr. baker believes we'll likely see a few things from animals on monday depending on how dark it gets and if there's any change in the temperature. those changes could trick these normally nocturnal barn owls at the zoo into suched wakely up and being active. conversely animals that tend to rest as nightfall approaches they may suddenly start heading in when the eclipse suddenly causes it to get darker midday. giving i was chance to potentially see a flock of

peacocks for example go from lounging on the ground to racing up trees where they sleep. one team of researchers in 1984 during a different kind of eclipse observed chimps climbing to the top of their enclosure appearing to watch the eclipse and then one stood up and gestured at the direction of the sun and the moon. so on monday, there's a chance we could see some animals a iteming to enjoy the eclipse as much as we will. >> it will be interesting to watch. so of course our staff will be attentive to what's going on with the animals during this period. >> reporter: and the philadelphia zoo will actually be open on monday during the solar eclipse giving people a chance to observe the animals for themselves and the zoo is actually encouraging anyone had comes here to download an app on your phone. i have that app called the i natural lift app. you can go into it and make observations of the animals even record those observations and up load it on to the app this will won't only be for fun but way

those bell las and a cool day another cool august day. 78 degrees. that's it. our normal high temperature in philadelphia 86 degrees. temperatures only moved about 6 degrees throughout date today with that cloud deck in place the rainfalling. we started off at 72 degrees. and the rain is still falling in center city philadelphia. it is light intensity very light drizzle like rain but still wetting the roadways so it could slow you down on your commute south winds at 5 miles an hour so that southerly component to our wind flow driving in his moisture but the showers they are clearing on out still ling lingering showers center city philadelphia in along i-95. slowly moving south eastbound so south jersey seeing that light rain moving on in another round we're seeing some rain lingering down the shore but otherwise clearing skies in the poconos. lehigh valley and berks county. temperatures held back all across the delaware valley today with that widespread rainfall. 77 in allentown. only at 73 in mount pocono. 77 degrees in wildwood. so we don't have the heat but we

definitely have the humidity. dew points up into the low to mid 70s. it feels so humid when you step outside. unfortunately, that's going to be the trend and we're going to ramp things up as we head into the end of the week. still humid tomorrow combine that with 90-degree heat a little more comfortable comforte head into thursday and then humidity levels just out of control by the end of the week unsufferable with dew points in the mid to upper 70s. but overnight tonight, gradual clearing, areas of fog developing that could be locally tense low temperature falling back to 71 degrees. we'll start off with some fog and low clouds tomorrow morning. turn it over to sunshine. up to 90 degrees we haven't been in the 90s in philadelphia since august 1st. hard to believe. we won't have much of a breeze to help cool us off with wind at 5 miles an hour tomorrow. future weather showing rain wise we quiet down into the evening hours. overnight tonight dry conditions but that fog is settling in across portions of the area. we'll have to contend with that fog for our wednesday morning

commute. then by mid to late morning, that fog clears on out. we see mostly sunny skies. could see maybe a stray sea breeze generated shower closer to the coast as we head into the afternoon and early evening hours. otherwise keeping it dry throughout our wednesday. checking in on gert the second hurricane of this 2017 season winds right now at 80 miles an hour. not too far offshore but it's now making that northeasterly turn so good news fort us coastline. gert is headed out to sea but we still do have those indirect impacts to worry about in the form of some rip current risks be sure to swim in front of a lifeguard down the shore tomorrow warm one high temperatures in the low to mid 80s with that chance of just a straight sea breeze generated shower in the later afternoon. spotty thunderstorm possible as we head into thursday. 84 degrees. and then very humid steamy and stormy on friday. potential for stronger weather as well we quite things down but keep it hot into the upcoming weekends. >> we're in the poconos friday. >> i know. >> have to have rain plan i
