going to be hot, it's going to be muggy. it already feels like that. >> definitely. and the fog is absolutely the initial when you walk out the door here. with time this is going to get out of here get scoured out by the sunshine and the sun will officially come up in half hour or so. we've got a dense fog advisory until 8:00 a.m. we may not see the fog completely thin out until 9:00, 10:00 a.m. depending how thick it is. this shot outside ocean city says it all. if you have not purchased your fog horn, perhaps now is the time to do so. let's take a look. they are finding lots of fog to the point they can barely see their hand in front of their face. fran is out here. also reporting 65 degrees, 100% humidity and it is in fact literally so foggy he can barely even see across the street. so that means you get slowed down by that if you're trying to
5:46 am
travel through it. expect it. country side area is pretty much a wash of fog right now but it is more patchy closer to the city that you get. finding fog out there, she said it's tree tops for her, it's not as low to the ground but it's still noticeable. also some fog out there, very quickly showing you a quick picture, this is one example of this. out in german town where the fog is settling in here too. pretty poor visibility starting to pick up in certain spots around the city. patchy is the also the word. the fog will lift, the sun will shine eventually and we're up to a steamy 90. that's perfect pool weather this afternoon going to a beach or
5:47 am
the lake whatever you've got going on it looks good. staying clear and seasonable as the wind looks calm. another front comes along and especially friday looking not only stormy but soupy. that humidity will be so high and uncomfortable and the storms meisha that day could be locally strong have to keep an eye on that. >> thank you so much for that, katie. piggy backing on what katie was talking about with all that fog, it is thick. we're looking at 95 at cottman right now. you can barely see those headlights and that will affect our commute this morning. the good news is the accidents that we had a little bit earlier this morning they've already been moved out of our way. take a look at the blue route, you can see all that fog out there both directions, anywhere that you go this morning except for when we start to move towards the city in some of our camera shots it's looking pretty clear.
5:48 am
42 freeway northbound as you approach 295 just starting to build there and we have some construction out there ac expressway at route 73 that right lane is compromised there. jan, back over to you. >> all right, meisha. excitement is building as we're just days away now from the historic solar eclipse. >> this will be the first coast to coast solar eclipse in nearly a century. >> good morning, dr. christian. >> good morning. >> so what exactly will we experience next week? we've heard so much buzz about it, but what will we actually see? >> so there in philadelphia you'll see a partial eclipse and you'll see the moon slowly move in front of the sun until 75% of the sun is blocked. you'll see a crescent sun. you've got to observe it safely. even at 75% blocked, the sun is too bright to look at with your
5:49 am
eyes. so you'll either need eclipse glasses or something like a pin hole camera. you can actually just make a small hole with your crossed fingers and you'll be able to see the crescent sun as the moon blocks most of the light of the sun. >> you mention a crescent sun. is that because philly is not exactly in the path of totality? >> that's correct. only in a narrow 65-mile wide band from org to south carolina will you see totality. and totality is really neat. it's this strange lighting situation. it gets dark in the day. i've seen two total solar eclipses and they're absolutely fantastic. if you can get to the path of totality, you really should try because it's just remarkable. >> quite the tease there. how has our precise mapping of the moon helped us predict the path of eclipses? >> the central path is the same.
5:50 am
we've known the orbit of the moon for a while. but once the lunar reconnaissance observatory has mapped we can't map the surface of the earth as well as the moon. and that allows us to determine the exact shape of the shadow in time exactly when totality is going to exist better than we ever have before. >> you mentioned a short time ago that animals will react. i thought that was interesting. how so? >> so they'll actually treat it like a short night. as it gets dark in totality, i was in micronesia on an island in the pacific last year and the birds came down to roost and then 2 minutes later took off in their morning flight. they do a spiralling flight in the morning and a whole large amount of birds were thinking it was morning.
5:51 am
so it's really crickets, lightning bugs, you might see a bunch of stuff thinking it's a short night. >> that sounds really fascinating. okay, our thanks to you dr. eric christian. we are all very excited. thank you for your time this morning. >> thank you. >> coverage continues in our next hour with a look at how gas prices are being affected and for the very latest always visit cbsphilly.com.
