. >> another night of protests in philadelphia as demonstrators march through the streets. they want to topple racism and a conversation statue in center city. and because of that a picture of frank rizzo has extra security. we're live with the latest. >> after several protest-filled days at trump tower, the president returns to his working vacation in new jersey. but the fallout continues. i'm seth lemon in washington with more coming up. >> and it's a case of good news and bad news. the bad news is you didn't hit the powerball jackpot.

i'll try to brighten that thought for you. take a look at what's happening. thankfully no fog issues like we had yesterday. it's all clear. this is the view outside pleasant valley middle and high school the campus up this way is completely clear. yesterday if you could recall all we could see is this 1 lone streetlight. thankfully that has definitely dissipated and it stays that way throughout the day. nice clear sky for the most part. the further south you go you may run into a pop-up shower or thunderstorm later on today. there are a couple of showers rolling across the maryland-virginia border. it's the southern counties that stand to see a pop-up some time today. 71 the current value, we're in the mid 60s up and down. 69 in atlantic city as the day progresses it's more sun than anything. watch for that spotty thunderstorm again mainly south

of baltimore avenue around midnight last night. it's not clear what caused that accident. the debate over the controversial frank rizzo statue in central city philadelphia is heating up. >> we told you about the calls to remove the statue and now there's a call to keep it. trang do again outside the city's municipal services building where the statue currently stands. trang, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, rahel and jim. yes, what a difference a day makes i was out here just yesterday and there were no barricades surrounding this statue. earlier this evening there were about two dozen police officers as well as two additional barricades that have since been removed. a single set of barricades surrounding this statue just last night there was an anti-racism demonstration that was massive and a smaller group gathered around the monument ordering that it be removed. a cross-section of philadelphia,

a thousand people strong marched down broad street wednesday night to be a collective voice against racism. this in the wake of a white supremacist rally in charlottesville, virginia over the weekend. >> racism has no place in our society. in our nation. and we will fight to uphold the laws of freedom. >> such a long way to go. i've been marching in marches like this for 50 years. i'm old but not i'm tired. >> reporter: the march brought a number of different groups together for one cause. police commissioner richard ross says the crowds remain peaceful and no one was arrested. >> we respect everyone's right to protest. that's what this country was founded on. >> reporter: while many passed into the church for a prayer service, a much smaller group surrounded the statue of frank rizzo demanding it be removed.

those calling for removal claimed allegations. >> it needs to come down one way or the other. i am not necessarily committed to which way it comes down. >> reporter: in the meantime philadelphia police set up additional surveillance cameras and barricades to protect the statue following two accidents of vandalism for which one man was arrested thursday morning. and on the other side of this, a petition started by a south philadelphia man on tuesday to keep the statue in place now has more than 16,000 signatures. meanwhile the mayor's office now saying that it is ready to discuss the statue's future. i'm trang do, cbs3 eyewitness news. rahel and jim back to you. >> and cities and states across the country are removing confederate monuments. cbs correspondent is live at one

controversial site. >> president trump's refusal to place blame for the violence in charlottesville on white supremacists has sparked national outrage. meanwhile hundreds came together at the exact spot where the clashes took place to denounce racism overnight. here's seth lemon with the latest. ♪ and the home of the brave >> reporter: hundreds gathered wednesday evening at the university of virginia for a candlelight vigil denouncing the violence and racism that was on display over the weekend in charlottesville. >> we don't want this anger and hate. >> being here tonight was a way of reclaiming the city. >> reporter: protests continued throughout the country. this one outside trump tower in new york was organized by a jewish group. even in santiago, chile, outside the building where vice president mike pence gave a speech, there was a show of

solidarity. here in dc the condemnation of trump continues in light of his comments claiming both sides for the violence in charlottesville. >> the president speaks for himself. the klan is evil. >> orrin hatch insists the president is misunderstood. >> i don't think he personally has a racist bone in his body. as he handled the virginia incident as well as i would have liked him to? no. nearly a dozen high profile corporate leaders quit the business advisory council over his response to charlottesville. in a tweet wednesday the president announced he had disbanded the group. >> in other news this morning and happening today the man accused in a case a deadly road rage case faces a judge. 28-year-old david desber faces

murder. they tried to merge into the same lane. jan carabeo will have more. the coast guard says the black hawk helicopter went down during training tuesday night. crews have since found parts of a fuselage and a helmet. several aircraft and boats are being used in the search. >> it's been almost a year since a woman was seriously hurt at a pumpkin launching competition in delaware. she suffered severe injuries at the punk kin chunkin event last year when a trap door flew off one of the cannons and hit her in the face. she has brain damage. we now know the identity of a man who urinated on a northeast philadelphia synagogue.

this is the suspect. he's facing numerous charges including ethnic indimation and institutional vandalism. eyewitness news was there as he surrendered to police tuesday night. it was he caught on video making an obscene hand gesture and urinating on the synagogue. in case you were wondering, there are no multimillionaires this morning. no one hit the jackpot. >> no new multimillionaires. one lucky person in los angeles did get five out of six numbers. the powerball jackpot up to $510 million. the next drawing is saturday for $510 million. >> we're in the pool.

back now on eyewitness news wild fire skoichd portugal. >> firefighters battle the blaze as fast-moving flames ravage the land. authorities have ak vakuated one village so far. this year's flames have destroyed three times more land than the average over the past 10 years. meanwhile several tornadoes touched down in minnesota. authorities believe at least five possibility tornadoes swirled through the area. a tree was uprooted and crashed to a home with someone inside. no one was hurt. >> and how about this. storms caused so much damage in kansas that officials had to cancel the first day of school today. strong storms moved through yesterday afternoon. people are still working to

clean up the damage after debris filled streets and yards. that's saying a lot if they had to cancel school. >> who starts school on a thursday? that's all. >> i love the way your brain works. i'm like that's an odd day to start the school year. >> the teachers all go back a week early. >> i guess they've got to ease the children back in. >> yeah. and maybe they don't want them walking through the debris. >> well yeah for the storm but i mean if the storm didn't happen, we're off track here. how's the weather happening? >> thankfully i don't expect any kind of major severe weather potential here in our area at all. though you may see spottiest showers or thunderstorms firing up later today and that's going to take place south. a localized zoom as well as the regional zoom looking pretty empty. we did have a little batch of showers, you can see that working its way across virginia and the maryland state border

but again we end up with sunny skies here today. the system that brought all that severe weather back into the central plains and southwest in general, that is headed our way and it could pose the threat of some stronger storms tomorrow which we will get to. but i want to focus on the beach here specifically because we do still have hurricane gert, granted well out to sea. but it is bringing in the indirect impact. these storms are large, right? so that is going to churn up the surf. even all the way out here in the jersey shore and the delaware beaches. keep in mind there may be dangerous rip kurts because of gert and you always want to be swimming near a lifeguard anyway, but especially when you've got this kind of situation, it can be dangerous to be in the water if you're not safe and smart about it. have a flotation device, a. swim near lifeguards, b and stay safe. the high is 85, just the isolated thunderstorm possibility we talked about and then tomorrow is when the next
