>> every day. >> good morning, everyone. gate way to our weekend is here. we're looking outside right now just a ton of construction, much of which is moving out of our way. dry roadways, no visibility issues. all really looking very, very clear right now. i'm going to show you a camera in a second that is showing a little hint of low-lying cloud cover. but you're right by comparison, it is nothing like what we saw yesterday. nice clear storm scan 3 at the moment. we may end up with a spotty shower or thunderstorm late today right now you don't have to worry about that. here's that shot i promised you. notice off in the distance you've got to look far out, behind the tree line there is some cloud cover, it obviously looks a little hazy but are we talking below a quarter mile visibility? absolutely not. that's helpful. but there is some moisture out there and i think you'll notice it. the humidity is certainly

something that will be noticeable throughout the entire day. we hit about 87 degrees with more sun than anything but there could be the spottiest showers or storms primarily south of the city later on today. it's not a wash-out by any stretch. meanwhile tomorrow more storms are on the way and they could have a little bit of gusto behind them. we'll talk about that later in the show and at the moment it is still looking good for eclipse viewing on monday. >> good. so many people are going to be watching that and it's so nice that mother nature is being nice to us. we're looking outside right now so we're talking about that construction which was really starting to slow us down. the good news is we are looking at this construction kind of off in the distance between route 23 and trooper. we were looking at that about 20 minutes ago it was very slow. now we're he'sing tension so crews moving out of our way. when we look on the eastbound

this is just volume levels. except 20 minutes ago it was bumper to bumper. now we're just talking about volume there and also construction there on the westbound side but it is moving out of our way. blue route moving in our direction approaching route 1 looking really good. and 95 south of gerard this is what you're looking at in the southbound direction. i would say it's starting to heat up now we know now pushing into the 6:00 hour, it's starting to heat up and it's something to consider as you're walking out the door this morning. >> a police officer was injured when his cruiser hit a parked vehicle in west philadelphia. the officer is being treated at penn presbyterian medical center for minor injuries. this happened about midnight. the circumstances of the crash srnt clear right now. >> in other news this morning the frank rizzo statue in center city philadelphia continues to be a hot button issue.

>> we told you about the call for removal but there's also a petition to keep it and the support is growing. trang do is live outside the city's municipal service building. good morning trang. >> reporter: good morning. the barricades to protect the statue first came out yesterday morning after a man was arrested for egging it and overnight we saw that protection really beefed up. there were about two dozen officers out here and three sets of barricades. but now that has been reduced. just a handful of officers here outside the statue with one set of barricades. last night there were a number of people who gathered here at this statue demanding it be torn down after attending an antiracism march. a cross-section of philadelphia a thousand people strong marched down broad street wednesday night to be a collective voice against racism. this in the wake of a white

supremacist rally in charlottesville, virginia over the weekend that turned violent. >> racism has no place in our society. in our nation. and we will fight to uphold the laws of freedom. >> they had such a long way to go. i've been marching in marches like this for 50 years. i'm old but not tired. >> reporter: the march brought a number of different groups together for one cause. police commissioner richard ross says the crowds remained peaceful and no one was arrested. >> we understand and respect everyone's right to protest that's what this country was founded on. >> reporter: while many packed into a church for a prayer service, a smaller group surrounded the statue of frank rizzo demanding it be removed. those calling for removal cite allegations of brutality against african-americans. >> it needs to come down one way or another.

i am not necessarily committed to which way it comes down. i'll be happy whichever way it happens. >> in the meantime police set up additional cameras and barricades to protect the statues. and on the other hand a petition started by a south philadelphia man to keep the statue in place has garnered more than 16,000 signatures since tuesday afternoon. the organizer says he wants to set up a meeting with mayor kenney who is calling for statue to be taken down. the mayor's office says it is open to discussions. i'm trang do, cbs3 eyewitness news. >> definitely strong feelings on both sides of that. >> tensions continue to rise this morning after president trump refuses to blame white supremacists for violence in charlottesville. >> people asked for peace and tolerance. here's seth lemon.

♪ and the home of the brave >> reporter: hundreds gathered wednesday evening at the university of virginia for a candlelight vigil denouncing the violence and racism that was on display over the weekend in charlottesville. >> we don't want this anger and hate in our town. >> being here tonight was a way of reclaiming the city. >> reporter: protests continued throughout the country. this one outside trump tower in new york was organized by a jewish group. even in chile, outside the building where vice president mike pence gave a speech there was a show of solidarity with charlottesville. here in dc the condemnation of president trump from democrats and republicans continues in light of his comments blaming both sides for the violence in charlottesville. >> the president speaks for himself. the clan is evil. >> reporter: republican senator orrin hatch insists the

president is just misunderstood. >> i don't think he personally has a racist bone in his body. has he handled this virginia incident as well as i would have liked him to? no. >> reporter: nearly a dozen high profile corporate leaders quit the president's business advisory council over his response to the violence in charlottesville. in a tweet wednesday the president announced he had disbanded the group. seth lemon, cbs3 eyewitness news. >> the search continues for five soldiers missing after their helicopter crashed off hawaii. the coast guard says the helicopter went down during a training exercise tuesday night. crews have found parts of a fuselage and a helmet so far. several aircraft and boats are being used in that search. meanwhile more than 30,000 public school students in guam are returning to school despite the threat of a missile attack. last week north korea leader kim

jung unthreatened to send missiles. security will be discussed in classrooms. >> back here at home and happening today, the man accused in the case of a deadly road rage incident faces a judge. david desper faces first and third degree murder charges in the shooting death of 18-year-old bianca roerson. after they both tried to merge into the same lane. desper is being held without bail. jan carabeo will have more on the story in about 30 minutes. an update now, authorities say bail has been set at $50,000 for the man who urinated on a northeast philadelphia synagogue. he is facing numerous charges including ethnic intimidation and institutional vandalism. eyewitness news was there as he surrendered to police. he is the man who was caught on surveillance video early sunday making an obscene hand gesture

and urinating on the synagogue. >> a woman is suing organizers of a pumpkin launching competition after she was severely injured in delaware. she servuffered severe injuries. she has brain damage and has lost vision in one eye. no word on how much money she's asking for. >> another legal setback for the town of margate in that ongoing dune controversy. a federal appeals court upheld an order to continue with the construction project. town officials have argued that ponding water has caused a safety hazard. the work aims to protect the state's coast line from a hurricane. >> in case you were wondering, no you're not a multimillionaire this morning. >> do you have any family in l.a.?

officials say several tornadoes touched down in minnesota. an eyewitness captured this funnel cloud. >> authorities believe five possible tornadoes swirled through the area. damage appears to be minimal in most area except for maybe downed trees. also there were no reports of injuries. >> and storms caused so much damage in kansas that officials canceled the first day of school today. strong storms moved through

yesterday afternoon tearing down trees. people are still working to clean up the damage after debris filled streets and yards. >> time now 6:15 and katie joining us. seems like we had an active week. what's today looking like? >> today is actually not looking too bad. i think for the most part many of us are going to see sunshine throughout the entire day. especially true for the folks south of the city. but even then we're talking isolated. so most of us are looking pretty good. latest storm system boy is that an organized looking system or what. the cold front with this is what's going to cross our area tomorrow. at the moment we will be sitting at a marginal risk for severe weather. for now we're calling for stronger thunderstorms into tomorrow especially second half of the day. here's hurricane gert. keep in mind if you're going to the shore this is going to churn up the surf for you. the storm itself is currently a

category 2 hurricane moving along at a pretty good clip. by friday it's up nearing the arctic circle but we're going to see the start to eventually lose its steam. interestingly enough it continued to strengthen as it moved into cooler water. shore cast all in all looks good today. watch out for that rip current risk today. have a flotation device with you in the water. 85 degrees the expected high but watch for the isolated thunderstorm. most of us are going to end up with a pretty good beach day. the water temperature 77 this afternoon. just watching for that rip current risk. that shower and thunderstorm chance is going to be heightened because of the frontal passage and into the weekend it's out of here. skies start to clear and at the moment it is looking clear with high pressure for eclipse viewing on monday. >> awesome news. all right katie thank you so much and a very good morning to you at home. if you're just waking up we are so glad you're here. looking at debris in the road 95

a bridge out in colorado suddenly collapses crashing on to the railroad tracks beneath it. authorities say crews were already working on tearing down the bridge when a chunk of it decided to do the work for them. officials say it didn't do any damage. thankfully no one was hurt. septa releases a new app. it's called septa transit watch. riders can use it to report safety issues right from their smart phones. the tips go directly to transit police. a dispatcher monitors the information coming in. >> smart phones everywhere, getting real time information coming in from riders makes a critical difference for police and other first responders. we count on our customers to help be the eyes and ears of the system. >> dispatchers can also send out alerts to riders thu the app and

dew point in the 60s it still feels comfortable. you're only in the 50s. only 54 degrees right now up in the mountains. a little on the cooler side by comparison. as the day progresses we're going to end up with toasty conditions. we should heat up efficiently come noontime. already up to 84 and we'll top it off to 87 this afternoon. i expect sunshine in the city. it's to the south that you'll have any possibility of a shower or a storm primarily. and even then spotty is the key term. stormy weather is eventually on the way and come tomorrow a cold front is going to be crossing our area. we'll talk about the timing on that since it does look like we are going to have some heavier duty thunderstorms that come along with that front. but right now fantastic news continues and we'll keep our fingers cross it stays this way. the eclipse viewing conditions do look good. >> that is making so many people happy. i am so excited to take a peek

>> happening today the preliminary hearing for the man charged in a deadly road rage shooting in west goeshen township. >> david desper faces charges. jan carabeo is live with the latest. >> reporter: rahel and jim, good morning. this was a story that gained national attention. the district attorney in westchester calling this crime savage and senseless. happening today david desper will face a judge for his preliminary hearing starting at 8:00 this morning. he is charged with first degree murd murder during an apparent road rage attack. police were able to track down david desper's red pickup truck through surveillance video and tips from the public. that vehicle was eventually found in glen mills and he turned himself in to police very early one morn on july 2nd. this came after an all-out 4-day

man hunt. this story actually started on a road in west goshen township. they were engaged in a cat and mouse encounter along route 100. the two were jockeying for position. the da says robberson wasn't letting him by so if he pulled out a gun and killed her immediately. she had just graduated from high school and was getting ready to attend jacksonville university in the fall. >> this is a story of a savage and senseless murder. this defendant wasn't happy with the way it was going so he pulled out a gun and killed this young woman. >> reporter: that was da tom hogan speaking at a press conference. at that time he said there is no indication that this is related to race. bianca robberson's family is

killed during the white nationalist rally. one woman was killed when a car plowed into counter protesters and two state troopers were killed when their chopper crashed while monitoring the rally. >> a california pastor is getting a lot of attention on social media. >> going to use the word of god to hate somebody for a different color, you've got to be the dumbest person on this earth to go ahead and say something like that. there's a bunch of stupid white people, i'm just telling you. >> the pastor was taking part in a child dedication service on sunday. that's when he felt he needed to respond to saturday's violence in charlottesville. the video was posted on facebook and it has been viewed more than 3 million times. >> could i have chosen a better word? possibly. what i said was very honest and i think it was something that needed to be shouted and i think that's what i was frustrated with in the sense of america have we not gone far -- have we not progressed at all?

welcome back, everyone. we're just days away from the solar eclipse and our eclipse fest coverage continues as we count down to the big day. >> a very exciting time for adults and children and experts are reminding parents to make sure kids view the eclipse in a safe way. that means making sure kids have proper eyewear and putting it on. it's important to do a practice run. >> monday's eclipse will be pretty cool but unfortunately we won't get the full effect in the philadelphia area. >> it shows what we will see. we're going to see a partial eclipse. only about 80% of the sun will be covered by the moon in fact the chief astronomer at the franklin institute the partial eclipse might be hard to notice. >> it's still going to look pretty much like daytime here. in fact if you didn't know an eclipse was happening, you wouldn't guess there was an

little on the hazy side. we did see a special weather statement from the national weather service specific to southern new jersey. you may run into some low lying cloud cover out there. it's not incredibly poor visibility but certainly in the distance it does start to fade away that tree line. we ever wise there are a lot of briilt skies across the region as a hole. a real nice start to the region all in all. we are still in the midst of some pretty quiet weather. we may see a spotty thunderstorm at some point later on today, the southern half of the area specifically. your eye gets immediately drawn to this very classically shaped and well-developed storm system that has that classic comma shape to it. it's going to cross our area tomorrow. so we are going to heat up yet
