"eyewitness news" reporter anita oh is live at police headquarters this morning. anita, what is the very latest >> reporter: jan, that man has not been identified but he is now at temple university hospital after he reportedly, pulled a gun on police and those officers shot him once in the lower back and one time in the leg. they unfolded in the 2500 block of north alder street off germantown avenue where bike sergeant and two bike officers happened to be patrolling when they say they saw a man walking with a gun in his hand. when those officers ordered man to drop a gun he reportedly started running and after a chase through an alley way man allegedly turn back, pointed his weapon at the sergeant. philadelphia police are investigating whether that man had been with a large, rowdy crowd nearby in west cumberland street that they were trying to disperse. >> at the time, it was a man with the gun and maybe one or two other people and larger

crowd i'm not entirely shore but that male did point a gun at the mow looks officer and also did discharge his weapon. >> now that man is currently in critical condition at temple university hospital, and police say that those officers, immediately rendered first aid to the man after, they shot him. live from police headquarters, i'm anita oh for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> thank you. lanes are back opened on the new jersey turnpike. crews closed them temporarily after a deadly crash there. that happened at 11:30 last night in runnemede. police say two cars were heading north when they crashed. one person was kill. two others were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, and now crews closed all of those lanes after the wreck, they are now all opened again. cause of the crash is under investigation. in other news this morning in several major cities all across the country thousands took part in solidarity marches calling for

confederate monuments to be torn down. last saturday a woman died when self proclaim white supremacist plowed in the crowd of counter protesters in virginia. one of the largest protests yesterday was in boston and kennett craig was there. >> reporter: from dallas, to houston. >> wow. >> reporter: and in memphis, hundreds of people rallied, calling for confederate monuments to be removed. >> we are here to protect the children, in fact, they are being taken down by these price supremacist. >> reporter: in boston right wing activist activist gathered by spree teach rally with you they were out number. stephen mcgraph says he for the to protect free speech. >> everybody has different views. if you take it to the violence level you move it up 100 percent. >> reporter: tom gallagher was promoting inclusion and tolerance. >> i respect free speech about that is not free speech.

>> reporter: rally and protest was messry peaceful and contrast to the week ago when hundreds of white national lists violently clashed with counter protesters in virginia heather hire was killed, when a white supremacist allegedly rammed his car into a crowd of people. boston police did not want a repeat of what happened in charlottesville so they intentionally kept the two side is here separated and they limited free speech event to just two hours. >> they did a good job. 99.9 percent of the people here were here for right reason and to fight bigotry, hate. >> reporter: several people were injured including this one who police removed from the rail. police say more than 30 arrests were made. kennett craig for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". now, following the rally, and violence in charlottesville, duke university has removed the robert e lee statue from the duke chapel entrance. it was vandalized wednesday night. officials say they they based

their decision on the safety of the community, community members and express university 's values. other communities are taking down or at least considering taking down confederate monuments. back here at home now kensington residents also spoke out against recent violence. in an inter faith rally with that i brought out 100 friends and neighbors they marched along emerald and frankford street. they shouted stop the violence this morning philadelphia police are searching for vandals who targeted the frank rizzo memorial. in south philadelphia. the vandals threw white paint on the mural early yesterday morning. it is at ninth and monday trees. they also spray painted quo kill, killer cops and then rest in peace david that appears to be a reference to david jones, black hand fatal ly shot by a philadelphia police officer back in june.

one arrest has been made for yesterday's vandalism. philadelphians are split on whether the rizzo memorial should stay or go. >> rizzo represents racism to a lot have people in philadelphia. >> i don't want to see anything get vandalized but i understand people have strong opinions. >> you say you don't like it, that is fine? this is ridiculous. >> we knew the man personally and, we do not feel he was racist. >> last week the frank rizzo statue in center city was vandalized several times. during the civil rights movement, one of the most notable voices was dick gregory, comedian and civil rights activist died late last night in washington d.c. he suffered a severe bacterial infection n1960's gregory boning racial barriers by using his sense of humor to spread message of social justice. he we came one of the first african-american comedian to find main stream success with white audiences.

show with our sunday morning shows, nice, clear, 60 degrees , wonderful sunrise as sun just starts to come up in the lehigh veil. if you are up in the poconos this morning or into the afternoon it will be a very, good way to wrap up the weekend. plenty of sunshine in the poconos. today 76 degrees for the high temperature and what we always love to talk about and that is lower humidity. great day to b city. temperatures as we wake up we 60's. pretty seasonal start. sixty-nine in philadelphia 67 down lone70 coming in at 73 degrees we are looking at 50's toward poconos. mount pocono itself 57 to start out the day. dew points where we go into the humidity factor the its an idea how much moisture is out there in the atmosphere and right now we are lower readings especially compared to yesterday at this time where we are still seeing areas in the zero seven's. we have 50's.

lower 50's out there to start out sunday. you will definitely feel difference as we step outside. it is not too much happening. high pressure is in control. little bit of light return there on the radar, that is nothing at all. it is j bit of a anomaly. for for our surfa a knowledge analysis high pressure out there rain, later in the workweek well off the coast line at this point. we will see this high, track east as we go throughout the day-to-day. it will unfortunately look to push off the coast line a little bit earlier, then expected, and what that means is we could have, the powe text for, a little bit more of cloud cover in a few areas. here's our solare crips. 80 percent have the sun block out tomorrow. it starts right around 1:20. that is when moon shadow will creep across the sun, into the afternoon. right around 2:44, 2:45 still good visibility. that is when we are looking at that full 80 percent.

not safe to look. health reporter stephanie stahl shows us how one local doctor is now getting his patients ready for the big event. >> we're handing them out to the patients. >> reporter: doctor jack dugan and ophthalmologist with wills eye/voorhees has thousands of solar eclipse glasses, only way people can safely see their event. the eclipse glasses have solar fillers that block harmful ray s of light. >> if you look up at sun right now you just can't. but if you put these on, and look up at it now,. >> wow. >> you can see the sun. >> wow. >> you can see solar spots. >> reporter: thinks what the total eclipse will look like as moon blocks the sun, it is outer atmosphere, will blow like a halo around the moon. in the philadelphia region 80 percent of the sun will be blocked but it is still not safe to look. >> even though brightness is diminished there are

ultraviolet rays that are getting through and infrared rays. >> reporter: doctor dugan says uv rays can cause damage to the it retina. >> high energy gets focused in the retina and causes inflammation,e deem a, it is an process where you create free radicals that damage, surrounding tissue. >> reporter: vision loss from looking at the sun can be permanent or lead to other problems like cataracts and macular degeneration. >> that is where damage occurs in the center of the vision. if you looking at both eyes it will occur in both eyes which is a big problem report report doctor dugan says dark sunglasses, goggles anything but improved solar glasses won't work and are dangerous. doctors say despite warnings they are still expect to go see people with vision issues following the eclipse, either from not using the glasses correctly or just trying to takee quick grams. i'm stephanie stahl, cbs-3 "eyewitness news". and speaking of safely watching the eclipse, welding

supply store can thank the eclipse for an unusual spike in business. that is because of high demand for welding lenses. nasa says shade 14 welding lenses can be used to watch the eclipse safely and in west alice wisconsin outside milwaukee eclipse glasses are a rarity so people have been calling up advanced welling supply in search of those lens es. >> so we have a shade 10, 11, 12, and then i 14. this is golden ticket right now. >> yeah, store's owners say they are getting about 25 calls a day and we should note not all welding lenses can be used to watch the solar eclipse. only sinces that are shade 12 or higher are suitable and anything less than 12 will not protect your eyes. coming up in the next half an hour right here on "eyewitness news", anita oh is live with the shooting involving philadelphia police that injured one man overnight

philadelphia police headquarters this morning. anita what do we know about the man who was shot. >> reporter: well, jan that man has not been identified but he is at temple university hospital now recovering after police shot him once, in the one right leg. now the chaos unfoldedon the 250 block of north off germantown avenue where a bike sergeant and two bike officers tried to stop this man who was reportedly walking with a gun in his hand. when those officers ordered the man to drop the gun he reportedly started running. after a chase through an alley way the man turned back and pointed his weapon at the sergeant. police are investigating investigating whether that man was with the large and crowd you crowd near west cumberland street they had been trying to disperse. >> this is their bike zone, grid, they were patrolling it. it wasn't a call for service. they were on patrol,

patrolling the area and when they went on alder street they saw a guy with the gun. >> reporter: that man is in critical condition at temple university hospital. we will, of course, keep you updated on the latest developments as soon as we get them. for now live at police headquarters, i'm anita oh for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". meantime pennsylvania state police have yesterday to release names of the two state troopers shot in the line of duty friday night. the two troopers were investigating a robbery when suspect pulled out a gun and shot them outside a grocery store south of pittsburgh. the 26 year-old shooter was killed at the scene, one of the troopers was shot in the hand and released from the hospital, the other officer, suffered a more serious injury , he was shot in the stomach and is still in the hospital in critical condition , but he is expected to be survive. meantime four police officers in florida also found themselves in the line of fire friday night as roxana saberi reports, two officers from one

department were killed. >> reporter: police in kissime florida when two of the officers responded to a call friday night in an area known for drug activity they shot in what may have been an ambush. the police chief jeff odell. >> it breaks my hard to speak to you tonight about another senseless tragedy. >> reporter: officer matthew baxter was killed, sergeant sam howard died saturday from his injured. everette glenn miller was arrested and charged. later in jacksonville, florida two police officers were shot and wounded. the suspect was killed. tragic night comes just afterorw enforcement officers were killed so far this yea criminal. >> it is getting tough to do the jobto protect, up hold, and maintain, livable neighborhood keep people safe, and, you know, the senseless acts are going on. >> reporter: kiss me officers are believed to be 27th, 28th killed this year.

peaceful. >> reporter: despite fears of a repeat of charlottesville, peace held in boston amid free speech rally and corresponding coulder protest on saturday. group calling itself the boston free speech coalition organized a rally before the violence in virginia tweeting this message a few days ago denouncing all violence and telling participants not to bring any weapons or antagonize groups or law enforcement but rotunda where they planned to meet was empty compared to the throngs of the counter demonstrators barricaded a good distance away. thousands of people marched through downtown boston speaking out against racism, nazi and white supremism, they carried signs such as united against hate while other criticized president donald trump. a few vocal trump supporter could be found in the crowd. some in the front line of the protest at times dot confrontational with police and amid particularly tense

moments several counter protesters were taken into police custody. from the sky you can see huge visual police presence, some confrontations and handful of people pulled in the crowd of police and taken away. i'm andrew spencer, reporting. overseas now, more than 20 people are dead and dozens more were injured after a train derailed in northern india. officials say two of the train cars crashed into each other while four others toppled over each other going off the track railway police and local volunteers there held passengers over those overturn train cars n word on what cause that had accident. and to spain now where country is in its third day of mourning victims of the thursday's terror attack this morning king and queen attended a special mass in honor of the victims. the attacks in bars zone a and nearby sea side resort town left 14 people dead and more than 120 people were injured. terry okita reports from

line, it is not too bad out there surface analysis again clear conditions for the most part. right now high pressure does remain in control. it does break down and travelinge in areas of high pressure and that allows for a few cloud to roll role in tomorrow and chance for a rumble of thunder but that will be much later in the day. this is what we can expect tomorrow. the day does start out on the clear side of the things. they will work their way in, clouds as we go throughout kind of the late morning and then into the early afternoon as that high pressure breaks down. most of the philadelphia area especially immediate center city area and immediate suburbs north and also east of the city will remain on the clear side of thinge b thicker,t is as we head further south and ferso i you are maybe goingn to northern delaware or even into central, southern delaware and del marva peninsula probably looks like you might want to do keep ab eye to the sky. we will not tell you to completely change your plans

but again if you are heading further south or further west from the city tomorrow, it looks like our cloud cover chances are higher, right there outside right now though temperatures not looking too bad, we will start off our sunday in the 60's, some 50's toward poconos and it is still 73 degrees right here in wildwood. dew points are relatively low to start the day out. it will be a more comfortable afternoon but we will check our comfort index as we get through monday, tuesday, wednesday, and look at this tomorrow we are humid bordering on oppressive. dew points could be in the 70 's. very, very humid tuesday and then a cold front tries to clear us out a little bit but does not get through loo like wy will be a little bit on the muggy side too 87 s today we will go with 88 tomorrow for the eclipse, again, that is small from maybe a rumble of thunder heading later toward the evening hours ninety-two with shower chances wednesday, jan and wednesday an thursday we will clear things out by friday. >> okay, thank you. 6:48. time to check the road lets

combo over to amanda mueller in the cbs-3 traffic center. hi there, a manned. hi jan. schuylkill expressway is focal point, starting with an accident that just cleared up second ago here on the blue route northbound ramp to 76. this does not look like it is tying anything up, no residual back ups to report. moving on to the big headache for drivers this morning, construction on the westbound side of the schuylkill expressway, thinks a live look at 76 westbound at city avenue where road work starts, you can see cones there, the highway is down to one lane with the right side closed up to gladwynn. good news is both side of 76 were under construction earlier but eastbound side just picked up so drive is getting gradually easier throughout the morning. ee are told they started to as well. and turning now to the rest of your majors this morning with and race looking good at there. nothing else of note slow you d. vine running at speed and rest of the majors in pennsylvania and new jersey including the
