ever so slightly, what we're seeing in jersey, approaching 295 at creek road, you can see how many headlights are out there right now, traveling, traveling posted speeds but maybe not for too long. schuylkill moving eastbound direction, past the conshohocken curve, now, this is where we are starting to slow down little bit. you are no longer just gassing and traveling around at posted speeds. you are starting to dip little bit below. that will so just heads up on that. speaking of the schuylkill at girard, tail loving eastbound direction, disable vehicle pulled off to the far right shoulder since cleared. so looking okay there. however, we did have report of a disable vehicle, 95 north, past academy, just a heads up on that, but overall northbound not too concerned with you. looking pretty good. accident in cheltenham township, route 309, near waverly road. and another one, in north wales, talk more about that coming up in the next ten minutes, jim, rahel, back to you. >> thank you shall meisha. it is happening today, the big

dark in the path of totality? let's explain what that means? the inner part of the moon's shadow, the umbra where it gets dark, the shawn go out along the path of totality. so, the shadow comes ashore on the coast of oregon, then lasts about two minutes. when it crosses the coast. by the time it gets to where i am, in carbon dale, illinois, the duration will have increased to about two minute 41 or two seconds. and then will start dropping off again. so, you know, all has to do with the geometry of the sun, moon and earth. but that's the way it works out. we're in the path of totality where it will be dark. hopefully the weather will cooperate, where they have wait and see thing going on here. >> bill, what do scientists hope to learn from this one? >> well, one of the things you can do during total eclipse you can't do any other time easily at least study the sun 's outer as moss fear called the core own a very interesting region to look at. the sun's light normally drowns it out completely, but during the eclipse, when the moon completely covers up the sun it, comes into glorious

view. you know, it will look like the light after full moon around here. when it is total. but what they're trying to understanded, what heat core own a surface of the sun about 10,000 degrees fahrenheit. move little ways away and it jumped to up more than a million degrees. they don't really understanded the mechanics of that. somehow the sun's magnetic fields is energizing the outer atmosphere, but we don't know the details, there are several competing models, by studding it during a total eclipse, may help them pin doubt exactly what's going on in that critical region of the sun. >> i have learned more in the past week than did i in a entire semester of of astronomy in college. >> but were you pairing attention in college? >> not real. >> i bill harwood live for us from carbondale, thank you, i know you're a a very hot come dollars odd at this around this time. >> my pleasure. >> already getting pictures from our cbs-3 viewers trying on their special eclipse glasses to get ready for this

we start things offer with a quick view of storm scan, still nice and clear. little hazy, i mean, look around here from the skydeck, i see hands full of some haze, some cloud cover, but for the most part really are off to quiet and nice clear start for you. so sun glare becomes the issue as you travel eastbound. but at the moment, around the region as a whole, it feels very comfortable. up in the mountains, mid 50's, at the shore, mid 60s, here in philly flirting with 70. at this hour. nice calm wind pretty much everywhere. as the day goes on under the clear sky, going to heat up quite efficiently, daytime high in the city to rebounds upper 80s, notice the thunderstorm icon. he don't think we have to worry about wet weather until shortly after the eclipse has wrapped up. key word there is spotty f we see anything at all it is going to be just. that will very spotty at the shore likely to stay totally dry as it is, the further upland best chance for shower over storm. now, with time, we're going to start to see these temperature values dropping off. to very comfortable levels all-in-all by week's end. however, we are also going to

>> reporter: hey jim, rahel, joined by kathleen miller in triple a. if you happen to fine yourself in a vehicle during the peak of the clings, what should you be thinking about? >> well, triple a wants to reminds everybody that even though today is a really big day for science, also needs to be a day for safety. so if you are driving during the eclipse, keep your headlights on. you also want to keep your sun advise or down, so you're not tell topped look at the sun, or the sole solar eclipse. you want to put your phone down, we can't stress that enough. this is not a day for distracted driving and trying get that photo or video. and, do not wear those eclipse glasses while driving. that's not what they're design for. >> so it sounds like people need a plan both drivers and pedestrians, because i can see people looking at the eclipse and me around err into the street, right? >> absolutely, before you lever the house today, need to decide where your priority is. is it the eclipse or maybe an appointment do you have get to

if you're top priority is to view the eclipse, stay off the road. if you know you have to be on the road during the eclipse, and you really want to see it, build in some time so you can pull off to the side of the road. you know, make sure you've got safe place to do it. do not pull off on to the side of the highway. do not use a shoulder. that is not a safe way to go about it. take an exit. build some time into your travel plans so that you can view it safely. >> and that segway pretty nice into traffic. we may see extra traffic delays during this. what should you do if you fine yourself not just driving but in traffic? >> this is human behavior. we don't know where folks are going to go today. there might be some viewing parties, so you might find some traffic. always, always, build in some extra time, in your commute. so that you don't ends up late >> we were talking before this , the biggest concern, you mentioned this in passing, the social media. not just watching while driving but collecting

is the same type of material. it is silver black polymer, you mentioned earlier, this blocks out 99.9% of the light of sun making it safe for to you view the sun through this term. >> that's a good thing. >> now, we're promoting a loft really safe viewing practices here at the franklin institute we'll have lot of safe viewing opportunities at our event between 12:00 and 4:00 outside of the museum on winter street which is nice newly renovated park here in philadelphia. so, not only are we going to have viewers like this, also going to have canopy's that you can stands under with this as the shelter. >> just giant canopy that far? >> yes. >> great idea. >> so stand under them with your friends, family, come out of your offers, break for lunch. come take a look at the eclipse. also, going to have sun spotters. these are great almost telescope type viewers, safe, easy surface of the sun. we will have many of these spread out over the course of the day. >> so what's it do he can actually?

>> will project image of the surface of the sun onto piece of paper by pulling it through lenses, and bouncing it off of mirrors. this is a great way for us to use all year around, so we can study the surface of the sun and see sun spots. but also going to have telescopes. while this is not major telescopic event, we want to make sure people have a chance to see the eclipse in the best possible way. >> sure. >> we have telescopes like this one you see over here that will project image of the surface of the sun, onto this material at the end of our cone. this is going to make it real safe to view. people can watch as groups, and really what's we want to be able to do. we want celebration for this, this event, and also going to have people celebrate it together. >> got to love it. everyone come down to the franklin institute, hang out with mickey, get under the canopy made of the silver black polymer. i'll never for get what that's called. most importantly please do not look directly at the sun without safe viewing tools. >> don't do it. >> real important. >> don't do it. all right? you guys? jim, rahel, i know --
