>> reporter: good afternoon, jim, rahel. about 15,000 people are expected to take in the eclipse from had in air filled , one every countless gatherings from coast-to-coast for this celestial event that for many will be once in a lifetime. the anticipation started early this morning, in st. joseph, missouri thousands converge on the town for the first coast-to-coast eclipse in nearly 100 years. >> so excited, we're kinds of geeked out about it. >> on the west coast the farming town of mattress, oregon, the first in the nation to watch the moon completely block out the sun. >> i've come, you know, thousands of miles to be here this area came up as the best place, in terms of the weather >> the eclipse will make its way from oregon to south carolina before heading out to sea. even americans who are not in the path of totality will still get to see partial clips , carbon dale, illinois, will be in the dark for the longest for two minutes, 40 seconds. the big question here in st. joseph, and other spots along

history. it will be a great day. >> sure is, consider us excited, don, thank you, live for just st. joseph, missouri. all eyes, thank you. well, a great place to view the eclipse locally is rowan university. they're hosting a party with a free show in their plan tear yum and handing out free glasses while supplies last. "eyewitness news" reporter anita live in glassboro, gearing un for the big event. hi, anita. >> reporter: hi, there, rahel. well, what a crowd here at the edelman planet plan tear july, viewing party, thousands expected here, as you can see, it appears they showed up. this is just one of the lines to get inside extending as far as the eye can see, some have even brought their lawn chairs , and are standing outside, they've been waiting since early this morning. now, throughout the afternoon the plan tear yum will be showing educational information about the eclipse inside, although in our area we will only see partial eclipse. those who have gathered here will head outside with special solar eclipse glasses to watch as the moon begins to cover the sun. the plan tear yum you

littles eye gave out 2,000 solar eclipse glasses this morning, they were gone in about an hour. take a look at what we saw out here earlier today. people lined up outside the lobby at ninth and walnut. that line as you said stretched around the block. with just hours to go before the eclipse happens here in philadelphia, there was last scramble to get glasses. wearing them is the only safe way to look at the sun during the eclipse. they block out harmful rays, from the sun, and doctors say watching the eclipse for just a couple of seconds, without protection, can cause something called solar retinopathy, burns to the retina, which can cause vision lost. there has been shortage of glasses which is why so many people lined up this morning, for the give away. here is some of their comments >> we've been here since 4:30, 4:45. we had gone to the zoo saturday, stood in line for two hours, sold out. we new today right now was the last option. so we came early. >> i don't have anything better to do this morning, and coy wait until the next

eclipse, but i don't think so. so i'll wait and hopefully i'll get glasses. i heard there are a lot of them. so i'll give it a shot. >> we are so excited. we live in atlanta. and this has meant so much to him to get these, yes. are you excited, jay? >> yes, yes, yes. >> reporter: now, wills eye has extra staff on duty in their emergency, department, just in case people don't take precautions. symptoms of solar retinopathy happen about one to six hours after exposure, and those symptoms include new blurred vision, and seeing spots. reporting live from wills eye hospital, i'm stephanie stahl, cbs-3, "eyewitness news." >> good information, stephanie , thank you. and turning out to the forecast, there is some sunshine out there, little cloudy, too, but katie, with so many eyes to the sky, will the sun fully be out when our partial eclipse begins? what do youy? >> i think definitely stay dry here. we have been expecting couple of patchy clouds have rolled in over center city, many

other locations, as welshing for the most part going to stay breitbart. going to see the sun filtered through the clouds, you will have for the most part a pretty clearview about eclipse throughout the afternoon, we check in on storm scan3, which remains empty at this point, little hint of cloud cover rolling through on the satelite coverage as you will notice. now, as the eclipse does in fact get underway, we should again for the most part ends up in the sunshine. it is quite warm out here, as well, specking thigh reach about 87%. 87 degrees, rather, as we see the partial clips up to 87%, then as the afternoon progresses here about 0:11 things begin to wrap up. shortly thereafter the potential comes for couple of showers or thunderstorms, now, what you will notice in the next few days, is we do go on bit of uphill climb, pretty substantial uphill climb for tomorrow. then we start to cool back down. so there is a system that's going to be working its way through. we do have some showers, some thunderstorms to track along with this progressive cool down. little later in the broadcast have, your full forecast, when

we will continue to follow this developing story. and staying overseas now, one woman was killed and manhunt hurt when a man slammed into two bus stops in france, happened this morning on the port city of marseille, the driver arrested short time later. authorities say the suspect is now undergoing psychological treatment. officials say it is too early to know if this is a case of terrorism. >> president trump is preparing for major speech tonight on the future of america's war in afghanistan. the president is expected to give the green light for the deployment of 4,000 additional troops. his plan may also involve putting new pressure on pakistan to stop giving safe havens to terror groups. the us involvement in afghanistan is the longest war in american history. and and you can watch the presidential address live tonight at 9:00 right here on cbs-3. >> meanwhile, coming up on cbs-3 "eyewitness news" the search continues off the coast of singapore, where a navy destroyer has collided with a oil tanker. we will tell you what safety violations have now been

primarily with cold front passage into tomorrow. but in advance that far, high pressure retreat treating, allowing more moisture to build in the atmosphere, more heat to build in the atmosphere, little bit of instability. as result could see spotty thunderstorm at some point. look close, just outside the p on philadelphia, already back through western pennsylvania, spotty shower and thunderstorm has gun to pop up out there. so basically still sitting pretty. holding tight to high pressure until it is all wrapping up with the eclipse. come 4:00, just as the event is wrapping up, this is how the radar begins to look, few speckles of green, couple of rumbles every thunder and lightning coming on through here, but the key word here is scattered, spotty, not everyone will be getting hit by this. actually all wraps up toward the tail end of the typical evening rush, into the overnight, basically clear. but dow think you can see some fog develop into the overnight , with building moisture and very light wind out, there as well. then, we move it forward through the rest of tuesday, take look at the time stamp here. moles of your tuesday is going to feature sunshine. that means, the ability to really heat up. see that in the seven day, and

also, build up the moisture content. so when this gets here, there could be heavier duty thunderstorms come along with it, but would likely wait until at least evening, then into the overnight this continues to push through. now, let's talk one more time about how to view this. i'll step out of the way so you can take a look and read through this. you never look directly at the sun, sunglasses, regular one of the mill ones, do not cut it for this. you need the proper filter. got to be approved one by the government. so double check that. and it is even safer if you observe this indirectly by projecting the sun's image with a pin hole camera or binoculars, actually have a tutorial on how to do this on my facebook page, i'm telling you, you only need couple of pieces of material to make it happen. and i guarantee you have them all sitting in your house, check out, my facebook page, still have time to create t comfort index something noticeable here. specially tomorrow. real high humidity making it feel quite owe press itch. dew point likely in the 70s for bulk of the day. so with high of 91 degrees tomorrow, be made to feel as

hot as 100 easily, but thankfully that starts to go by the wayside behind the colds front passage we talked b now temperatures as they currently stands, pretty close to the daytime high, expectations already, 84 in the city. shooting for 87 with time here today. it is already 81 in broad heads ville. there is some sunlight peaking through the clouds, feel like this looks little more gray than it actually s just the coloring on the camera. but you will see some sun filtered through the clouds in time for the event. and again, yes, you will see some clouds. but it should not skew completely our view of this eclipse here happening this afternoon. now moving forward, thunderstorm look pretty spotty, primarily going to happen at night tomorrow. they may linger as late as early wednesday morning, but then we are smooth sailing, we clear it out for the rest every wednesday, humidity drops, thursday, friday, right now saturday, sunday, look absolutely gorgeous. we will keep our fingers crossed that high pressure holds tight for that long. >> all right, katie, thank you looking good. well, little girl with a big heart. >> meisha is here now with
