watch as the picture descends into near total darkness. young and old alike, loved it. >> it was really cool. i didn't really like the whole sun was covered by the moon and then it went really dark. >> and here's's another view of just how dark it got, this tv helicopter was rolling over city of forward land as the darkness fell today. the experts say that this was the most observed and most photographed eclipse in history. good afternoon everyone i'm jessica dean. i'm nicole brewer, ukee's off today. thinks how it looks through camera on the cbs-3 sky deck. you can see moon taking a bite out of the sun, and it is a time lapse version you are seeing here so you can see that progression. this all happened over the span of few minutes and unfortunately cloud in the area weren't too thick to block out the fun. many gathered on the beach today for this once in the lifetime event. >> "eyewitness news" reporter alycia nieves is live where

eclipse watchers walked away impress today, alycia. >> reporter: nicole and guess cat word wow and amazing were word we heard over and over again today not just because of the eclipse but being at the shore was really best vantage point to see it. in ocean city, new jersey right around 1:20 in the afternoon people went from playing in the sun, to being mesmerized by it. >> we can see moon on the right side, just almost like a finger nail. >> pretty neat. >> reporter: put a special filter on our camera to get a view of the eclipse here because greater philadelphia and south jersey area this was the best vantage point. >> my god it is unbelievable. >> reporter: some knew that and came prepared while others improvised. >> i don't know if those are iso certified. >> reporter: we did see improvising people with pin hole viewers. >> this is amazing, you can see it. i can see a bright spot.

>> reporter: pin hole viewers work well we let this view try our eclipse glasses because. >> oh, that is so much better. that is incredible. that is ace om. i'm living. >> reporter: sharing our glasses at the shore soon after became a thing. for half an hour people came up, one after another. >> starting to eat the sun, look at that. can you see it. >> that is unbelievable. >> thank you so much. >> reporter: after running around beach for first hour of the eclipse we saw our spirit of sharing with those glasses was a trend happening here. coming up at 6:00 we will tell you how life guards made sure anyone who wanted to see the eclipse did so and we will tell but concern on the beach during the eclipse. reporting live from ocean city , alycia nieves for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". from the beach to gloucester county some witness ed this celestial event at the elelman planetarium at

rowan university. it may november been total eclipse here but it did not disappoint. >> it had not happened for to us see in a hundred years so that is really exciting that i get to do it with my son because he is still not back to school. >> in addition to watching the eclipse planetarium had a party and hands on activities and see more or that coming up at 5:30. path of the total solar eclipse started in oregon and ended near charleston, south carolina now thinks howie clips looked in the salem, oregon area let's pull up that video and see. this is one of the first spots that went completely dark. if we go back to the map, st. joseph, missouri, this was close to the midpoint of the cross country trip. it was cloudy until this moment before the sun was totally blocked out, by the moon and the eclipse ended inside south carolina we can tell you that the skies were also cloudy here with you the sun still managed to peak through just enough for an amazing solar show. now those who watched in south

carolina were among last won to see this eclipse of the century. >> nicole thanks. with the historic eclipse come and gonna cross the continental united states for many the memory of the celestial event, will last a lifetime. correspondent don champion is live in st. joseph, missouri one of the few locations where the eclipse created total dark ness and don, were you there to see it all. >> reporter: i got to tell you it was literally two minutes of awesomeness here in st. joseph, missouri to day b15000 people or more gathered at this airport to take in the eclipse. of course it was just one of the countless gathering from his coast to coast today for this once in the lifetime celestial event a spectacular sight in the sky, as the coast to coast total eclipse of the sun got underway. sit of important land, oregon went cashing as moon shadow totally blocked out the sun.

across the nation, crowds gathered to get a glimpse of the phenomenon. this is the first, coast to coast, total eclipse of the sun in nearly 100 years, span ning from oregon to south carolina. millions flocked to the 70 miles wide path of totality >> it is like a little bite out of the cookie. >> it is like in the picture you see but more magnificent. >> reporter: during total eclipse here in st. joseph, missouri it got completely dark out and considerably cooler. you can hear cheers and chants from people gathered. carbondale had distinction of being in the dark the longest, two minutes and 40 seconds. and while focus is on the path of totality the rest of the country was treated to a partial eclipse making it the rare space spectacle the entire nation can enjoy. just to give you an idea of the people who traveled all the way here to take in the eclipse today we met folks who traveled here from all the way from australia, brazil, and

even kenya. now nicole you just don't even , you just don't see the eclipse you also feel it, during that two minutes and 38 seconds that we experienced total eclipse here temperature drop down to 67 degrees. it was awesome. >> that is incredible, don, thanks. we appreciate it. solar eclipse watch parties have popped up all across our region and one sure to impress was party at franklin institute in center city. cbs-3 meteorologist katie fehlinger is live there with visitors just watched and they also learned. hi there, katie. >> weather has pretty well all and all we know cloud rolled in and out but people were here at franklin institute just as party was getting started at high noon. and they marveled once this two hour 40 minute show in the sky got underway take a look. center of the solar system was center of attention today at the franklin institute. >> glad we came, we came back from bucks county to see this today. i'm glad that we came.

astronomer traveled to the path of totality to witness the eclipse today. derek pits is live in st. joseph, missouri. he was there in the dark for a few minutes. >> derek, can you describe that feeling for us. >> it was a spectacular event here in st. joseph, missouri. we were all very worried we wouldn't get to see anything because of the sky was so overcast, and we actually had rain right up until about 12 minutes before we got to see any of the eclipse. there was a thinning of the cloud, we got to see the last glimmers of the sun disappear, and we got some cloud cover after that and then, miraculously just a few second s later we got a nice view of totality right through the cloud. we had a very dramatic sight ing of the eclipse, it was spectacular and everyone here loved it. >> derek, i have to ask you as an expert does this live up to your expectations, i mean you traveled far away to see this? >> i did, but i came to the place where we had a good long period of totality, we were

two minutes and 392nd here in st. joseph and in this location we could have the longest amount of time possible but we have a nice opened sky here, so wonderful place to do this kind of observing and if we had perfectly clear skies, it would have been, of course, a perfect event but we got, instead the dramatic event that came with the cloud, and it was really wonderful to be able to see that. >> derek, you are definitely in your element but how many other people around you react, what was the crowd, and the scene like. >> well, the crowd was very, very excited about the possibility of seeing an eclipse, it was a really wonderful expression on all of the part, on all of the parts of all of the people here about their interest in science, stem subjects that they wanted to come out and experience the eclipse right here but you could hear the roar of the crowd, you could hear the yells of joy and screams like wow, this is great, you can hear that rolling across the field,

this is view from high above port land, oregon as city descended in to darkness. crowd kept their eye to the ground and eventually, and natural flight to my city. >> this is nasa's view of the total solar eclipse in idaho falls, idaho, it got so dark that the streetlights turned on, sky gazers were also treated to a solar eclipse phenomenon and sun reemerged and created a diamond ring effect around the moon's silhouette.

>> people here showed off their excitement using #cbs-3, john val row was one who posted this picture watching here at bucks county community college. and page powers, she also wore her protective glasses as she waited for the eclipse, she tweeted eclipse, pretty cool to see. were you an eyewitness to history today. we do want to see the eclipse photos and videos you are sharing, just up load them on social media and use #cbs-3. well in, other news, tonight the debate over frank rizzo statue in center city rages on. one group of supporters postponed a rally after mayor agreed to meet with them. >> chopper three is live over statue where counter protesters have gathered calling for a removal. "eyewitness news" reporter joe holden is live on the ground with more on the controversy, joe. >> reporter: well, good evening to you. this is a debate that has been smoldering since charlottesville, virginia, the question is, for these people behind me, does frank rizzo

the late philadelphia mayor, as they would call it his checkered past matter enough to remove statue here that has been standing in this spot outside municipal services has building, since 1999. right now rough guess, about 150 people here in the crowd, philadelphia police shut down jfk boulevard within the last hour, and as the crowd has ballooned just a bit. speeches have been going on the last hour. cbs-3 was here as police a erect the gates around the statue. it was just last week people defaced the statue, vandal icing it. that was also followed by vandalism at the frank rizzo, mural, on south ninth street in south philadelphia. now, of course, opinions are very, varied on this topic, we are working on other side of the story for 6:00 but first, ab interview we captured out here earlier about why some believe that this statue

>> standing by with lauren casey, and the weather held up pretty well. >> yes. >> for this eclipse fest. >> we did have some cloud rolling on through but most of us got a pretty good sight of that eclipse, amazing but right now, see mostly clear sky conditions conditions as we look live at center city philadelphia 84 degrees is your current temperature. feeling more like 87. we have humid factor going. with wind flow add nothing this moisture and we will feel even more humid as we head into the day tomorrow. i know. storm scan three showing us, pretty quiet conditions. there are cloud that developed right around eclipse time, maybe due to cooling, provided by that eclipse but we have storms right new rolling through, berks or toward berks and carbon and monroe counties so head up, might be hearing rumbles of thunder, seek out shelter in and around poconos with these cells moving due east and could be containing rain and lightening as we head into the next hour. this evening we could see hit or miss storm 82 degrees so a

warm, humid evening, future weather showing us we have a chance of hit or miss storm especially west of i-95, could see a few cells making their way across the interstate as we head in the second half of the evening and then by midnight all of this activity winding on down with the quiet overnight period of the storm. temperatures right now we're warm and right about average. 84 degrees in philadelphia. eighty-five allentown. eighty-five in reading. eighty-two in ac. dew point fell with that sticky factor in the 70's, it feels, humid, right now we are in the upper 60's in philadelphia, we will push our dew point up in the mid 70's, tomorrow so it will be feeling very humid and then combine that, with high temperatures in the lower 90's mixture of sun and cloud, late day thunderstorm a high of 93, combining that with the humidity and near a record as well, 93 degrees but only 4 degrees shy off the record high temperature in philadelphia, set way back in 1916. so national weather service has issued a heat advisory in effect for tomorrow throughout

the afternoon and early evening hours for philadelphia , and surrounding counties, so up and down i-95, really will take it easy during prime heating of the day tomorrow with the high temperature topping out at 91 in trenton. we are at 89 tomorrow in allentown. up to 90 in wilmington. when we factor in that humidity it will feel even hotter as we head throughout the day, it feels like temperature up there in the upper 90's and to near 100 degrees. tomorrow is day to take it easy before, we had headed in to mid week and dew points will drop off considerably feeling not bad by late day on wednesday feeling down right amazing by thursday and we actually have a taste of fall in store, after this brief blast of heat that we will have to endure thomas we head into the second half of the week dew points dropping off, fall like levels, sunshine, overnight lows that will feel awfully, better. 60 degrees. stretch of high temperatures in the upper 70's, perfection. >> that sounds lovely. >> we like that over here.

it looks like here with the sun aligning with the moon. good evening i'm nicole blur in for ukee tonight. hi everyone i'm jessica dean. it has been a momentous day not only in the path of totality but in our region people are marveling at the historic eclipse. anita oh is live at rowan university where they held an event that drew more than a thousand people, anita? >> reporter: yes, very big event, guys, and, festivities are over as you can see but earlier align wrapped around this planetarium for a show inside, and people packed this lawn trying to catch a glimpse of that eclipse. we saw people with serial boxes, solar eclipse glasses, goggles and we also met some very excited kid. >> it is sun but then turned in the moon. >> reporter: six year-old wesley hall way discovered looking through cbs-3 special frames solar eclipse and north america on monday the moon only partially covered the sun in our region.

>> it is a crescent moon, it is moving a little bit. and it is stuff shining from this. >> to celebrate the event, elainea cortez and her friend made their own t-shirts. >> i have never seen an eclipse. >> reporter: she waited in line outside planetarium at rowan university for an eclipse festivities and snag a pair of free solar eclipse glasses. janice george waited in rine with her son since 10:00 monday morning. >> it is excite ago this rowan is doing it for the community, opened to the public, and, just, for free, so really doesn't get better than that. >> reporter: especially for true for lorenzo garcia hopeful former astronaut. >> i'm here for the eclipse, and it is that, it looks really pretty, and it has, a golden ring. >> reporter: now the planetarium has 1300 pairs of solar eclipse glasses to give out and they ran out within minutes. there was a licensing line of

excited people here waiting near eclipse this afternoon. live from rowan university i'm anita oh for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> thanks very much. potential eye damage from looking at the eclipse, without glasses, it is now concern and health reporter stephanie stahl is live at wills eye hospital in center city with that part of the coverage, stephanie. >> reporter: that is right, wills eye emergency department has one patient, right now being evaluated with concerns about potential eye damage that happened during the eclipse but that person i'm told has 20/20 vision. doctors are not that concerned f there are vision issues related to that eclipse that can take a while probably won't be diagnosed until tomorrow. today though, here at wills eye a big day of preparation. wills eye hospital had a last minute give away of solar glasses on eclipse day people were lined up around the block at ninth and walnut. >> we knew today, right now was the last option, so we came early. >> reporter: she and her eight year-old daughter were first in line at 4:00 in the morning

>> very excited because i always wanted to see an eclipse. >> reporter: shortages of solar glasses and supplies dim ming it was last minute scramble to find protection. only safe way to look at sun with the power diminished by the eclipse. >> the sun, big ball of fire, putting out a lot of radiation >> reporter: doctor mark bleacher says staring at the sun can cause injuring the retina and potentially leading to vision loss. >> we have extra staff, we have extra equipment on stand by so we can evaluate, diagnosis, patients who might have had a problem. >> reporter: symptoms of retina injuries are blurriness and seeing spots and it can take 12 hours to develop. >> i think we will have a two camps, people who are undually concerned and any little problem or suspect problem will drive them into their doctor's office or er and then we will have people who just don't care and don't listen to any of what we're saying and we will have real problems. >> reporter: in terms of the treatment can i do anything after the damage happens.

>> short answer to that is no. if you have gotten damage to the eye is there nothing we can do to reverse that damage. >> reporter: now there was some cloud cover during the eclipse today so people were looking up, without glasses trying to find the sun. is there a problem with that? i asked doctors, and they said it takes a couple seconds looking up at the sun should not cause any serious injuries reporting live from wills eye hospital i'm stephanie stahl, cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> good to know, thank you. even the president took sometime to turn his eye to the sky, you can see him there with the first lady and their son baron watching the cosmic phenomenon from the true man balcony at the white house. they haddon certified eclipse glasses, again very important. president trump's eclipse excitement was short lived he is most likely spending rest of the day preparing for tonight's major foreign policy address on afghanistan. in a nationally tell visaed dress to the nation president trump is expected to unveil a

new military plan to combat terrorism in afghanistan. that plan reportedly included, sending nearly 4,000 additional troops in the war torn country. our objective need to be that we have a regime in afghanistan that can maintain some semblance of security so that we don't see growing terrorist organizations again within afghanistan. >> he is also expected to put new pressure on nearby pakistan urging them to stop giving safe have tone terrorist. u.s. involvement in afghanistan is longest war in american history. president trump is scheduled to deliver that presidential address tonight at 9:00 p.m. you can catch that right here on cbs-3. u.s. defense officials are confirming the navy will conduct a broad investigation in the collision of the u.s.s. john s mccain and oil tanker. that crash occurred near singapore, 10 sailors are still missing, several hospitalized.

it has been 25 years since the academy of pediatric introduced back to sleep campaign to prevent sudden infant death syndrome. >> but new study of 3200 moms showed that while 77 percent usually place their babies on the backs to sleep only 44

it was like to see this total solar eclipse, in jackson hole >> i was hoping to see like a big line of darkness, approaching from the west but that was not really what it looked like. there was gathering darkness in the west. the mountains kind of got really dark and then, we were in the dark and at that point you could see venous. right when the eclipse was ending was very, that might be the most spectacular part which is just like the sun explode from behind and it is just kind of like an explosion of brilliance. >> wow. >> and when it got dark, it got really dark. i mean it was like, typical summer night in jackson hole, wyoming. >> people were running for jackets. >> it got down in the 30's. it was very cold. >> what would you say was your favorite part. >> when it started to get dark there were cheers all around us, and obviously everybody could not see so everybody was

looking live at center city philadelphia, sunshine in the scene and we have a few cloud, great in the sky but cbs-3 eyewitness weather watchers commenting about today's big show the solar eclipse and we will head down the shore right now where we have the least amount of cloud cover to check out that view 80 degrees as reported by our weather watcher james in ocean city, he has sunshine right now and he said temperatures dropped about 5 degrees, during the eclipse, so cool, quite a show , and i think we all thought that today seeing something so unique in the sky , and we will head out northwest of the city and check in at 85, little bit more toasty, he has partly sunny conditions and north wales, pennsylvania and he says got cloudy at peak of coverage, and i'm thinking we did see some cloud form in the afternoon hours and it was right around that period where we saw as much totality as we were going to see or 80 percent of coverage. we could have seen a little bit of cooling because of that and that could have cause that

had moisture in the atmosphere to condense and form that cloud cover, so it is not impossible to say that the eclipse may be formed those cloud while taking place across our region today. but yeah we have a couple cloud moving in and in the form of the some thunderstorms right now as we check in and storm scan three but first up lets take a look at broadhead ville in the poconos where we are seeing cloud, because we have thunderstorms just up wind right now. we will take you full to the weather computer, 81 degrees and we are seeing storms rolling in right now on storm scan three, moving into western berks county, as well we're seeing these cells heading their way eastbound right now, strong thunderstorm across portions of western berks county but seeing activity heading toward carbon , monroe, clouding up your sky in the broadheadville area and we have this cell potentially that could contain hail with that obviously very heavy rainfall lightening embedded, impacting bernville area and moving eastbound and

strengthening at this point so reading will be dealing with more rainfall, this summer. storm scan three showing us we have this cluster of thunderstorm activity trying to move its way in the portions of delaware not doing a very great job. we will keep an eye on that as we head in the next couple of hours. future weather shows a hit or miss thunderstorm west of i-95 as we head in the next couple of hours, could see a cell maybe pop over the interstate but as we head into midnight all this activity quieting down and nice quiet start for your tuesday morning commute, lunch hour looking great we will have sunshine but we will have a lot of heat and then as we head in the evening hours we will see a cold front dropping in, that will generate some showers and thunderstorms. this will occur after the sunset and throughout the overnight period and then we will see some of those showers maybe a shower or storm link inner to early wednesday before we have a big change in store but overnight tonight partly cloudy, warm, muggy, hot and humid, late day thunderstorm possible with a high temperature of 93, that
