not be speaking here tonight. >> protests over a designated chelsea manning forces the school to withdraw her invitation. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york, u i'm anne-marie green. we begin with the latest act of defiance by north korea. for the second time in less than a month, it fired an intermediate-range missile over japan. it passed over the japanese island of hokkaido. it traveled about 2,300 miles and landed in the pacific ocean. hena doba is here with the details. good morning, hena. >> good morning, anne-marie. meanwhile the u.n. will hold an emergency meeting today to discuss what more it can do to curb pyongyang's pursuit of nuclear weapons.

[ siren ] >> that's a nice wakeup call. my phone translated it as a north korean missile launch. >> that's the warning everybody got after a missile passed over the japanese island and landed in the pacific ocean. it's the second time they've fired a missile in the last few weeks over japan. president trump was asked about north korea on "air force one." >> we're working on things. i can't tell you what i'm working on, but believe me, the people will be very, very sad. >> japanese president shinzo abe called on north korea and said it's threatening the world with world peace. this latest move by the north is the first since u.n. sanctions were passed earlier this week.

>> north korea doesn't seem to be deterred or restraining its activities and provocations in any way. >> in a statement u.s. secretary of state rex tillerson responded. china and russia must indicate their intolerance for these reckless missile launches by taking direct actions of their own. >> and u.s. defense secretary james mattis responded. he said, quote, i don't want to talk on that yet. anne-marie. >> hena doba here in new york. thank you so much, hena. as the cleanup and recovery from hurricane irma gets under way, the death toll continues to climb. at least 82 people were killed in the caribbean and the u.s. more than a third were in florida. president trump and first lady melania visited naples yesterday. they handed out food and water and toured the damage by air. the president praised governor

rick scott and first responders. >> thousands and thuses of people may have had their lives ended and the number is a very small number, which is a great tribute to you. >> last night president trump and his wife paid tribute at the white house. florida is cutting off funds. the governor announced last night that he had directed the agency for health care determination to terminate the hollywood nursing home as a medicaid provider. a criminal investigation is now under way. and questions remain about whether a deal has been struck between president trump and the dem contracts on daca. republican lawmakers insist there's no agreement. at issue, legal protection for 800,000 undocumented immigrants brought to the u.s. as children. weijia jiang has more.

best and warning the democrats. congress has six months to work out a deal. weijia jiang, cbs news, the white house. a training exercise at an army base killed a special operations soldier and injured others. it took place yesterday at ft. bragg, north carolina. a sergeant died during the exercise. the army is investigating and it comes just a day after 15 marines were hurt in a fire while training at camp pendleton in north carolina. the family of a-year-old boy accused of shooting four classmates at a washington state high school offered sympathy and condolences to the community. mireya villarreal have more on the shooting.

>> are you playing halo? i just planned your murder. >> reporter: this video of the suspected shooter shows the high school sophomore role playing with play guns. a newly released affidavit caleb told detectives he came to school to teach everyone a lesson about what happens when you bully others. he's been seeing a counselor over suicide ideations. sharp's first shots came from a rifle that jammed up. his second weapon, a handgun, was used to shoot fellow sophomore sam strahan who was attempting to intervene. at one point he said, i always knew you were going to shoot up the school. he shot him in the stomach and face, killing him. the janitor has stepped in to

stop the shooter. >> why did he step in? he put his life on the line. >> those are rare people. if you ask him, i bet he can't tell you. you do what you've got do. joe confronted him, ordered him to the ground, and then held him there. >> reporter: according to an affidavit friends said caleb makes improvised explosive devices out of various chemicals and white gas and showed him how to make an ied. >> does it surprise you? >> not at all. this is a situation that plays out in our society way too often. >> reporter: the sheriff is planning to charge the shooter as an adult even though he's 15 years old. the charges include premeditated murder with his arraignment set for later this month. the cia director canceled his appearance at harvard to protest the school's decision to make chelsea manning a visiting
