coast as storm began to make land fall this morning, maria is a category three storm packing wind of 150 miles an hour. >> earlier maria left a devastating mark on puerto rico. "eyewitness news" reporter jan carabao is live with more on what people are dealing with their, good morning, jan. >> reporter: good morning. "eyewitness news" was able to speak, with would woman and she says as soon as she can and safe to do so she will drive around and check on her family one by one. that is because puerto rico has been left in the dark. hurricane maria knocked out the power grid there. it also knocked out a lot of the cell service as well. there is very limited communication there on the island. this comes as the threat now turns to rain and possibly, life threatening flooding. >> it sounds like a woman screaming at the top of her lungs, very high pitched squealing sound and it is just coming through every crack in

this building. >> reporter: even as hurricane maria now sets sights on the dominican republic the storm continues to punish puerto rico with torrential rain overnight turning road into rapid and paralyzing rescue and recovery efforts. wednesday morning maria made land fall in southeast puerto rico as a powerful category four storms with wind of 155 miles an hour, hit the island bringing down power lines, snapping trees and destroying hundreds of homes. >> it was very scary. >> reporter: she took her kid to this shelter when she realized their lives could be in danger. >> when the winds started to increase, the roof started to fall. >> reporter: even that shelter wasn't immune to maria's strength. >> the roof was going to cave-in on us. so they moved us to the second floor hallways of the arena. >> hurricane maria has wiped out power to the entire island

mexico city. she has been wiggling her fingers in response to calls from rescuers, all day and night crews have been trying to reach her and any other students who may still ab live this rescuer telling a reporter that special cameras they are using indicate that there are at least two other children still inn side. dramatic video from earlier in the day shows two students being pulled to safety through cracks in the debris. the school crumbled on tuesday during the massive earthquake killing more than two dozen. mostly children, a few are still unaccounted for. here in mexico city nearly 40 buildings collapsed, officials say throughout the area more than 50 people have been rescued, alive from the ruble left behind. this woman was pulled through a hole in the ceiling, more than 24 hours after the quake hit, and this man was carried away on a stretcher after being trapped inside his building where the bottom two floors collapsed on to each

other like a pancake. mexican president enrique pena nieto says efforts are underway to help these left without homes but the priority almost two days after the quake remains saving lives. the search and rescue efforts, they have been ongoing, since tuesday, day and night, and they continue through the rain they will continue for, really sometime to come. there is some good news for people of mexico city and that is what we are told that the power here is now restored to nearly all of the 4 million people who lost it during the earthquake, jim and rahel, back to you. >> chris, thank you. well, back here in our area woman is critically injured after she's hit by a koran roosevelt boulevard, it happened around 9:30 near southampton road. police say victim in her 20's was struck in the north bound

well, talk about adriatic change in weather in oregon it went from being 90 to a winter wonder land almost overnight, mount hood got more than a foot of snow in the pennsylvania few days, great news for skiers, they are already taking advantage of the early snowfall but it could be short lived, the powder is expected to start melting as temperatures rise, this weekend. i feel like that is best of both worlds, you still get warm weather but a very brief change to experience the snow. >> that is called, cold. can you imagine people will be walk around with pneumonia. >> it is true. >> it is a myth. doctor oz told us that before. >> yes. >> i was off. we rested our brain power. >> yes. >> yeah, we definitely rested. that is for sure. it is nice to have a two day week but you had it for a better reason then i did. it is good to have the whole team back together regardless.
