family members one by one, after all, puerto rico is in the dark. hurricane maria has knocked off the power grid and cell towers as well so communication is extremely limited. this comes as the next threat now turns to the rain, and potentially, life threatening flooding. hurricane maria again gaining strength as the storm churns off the eastern shore, of the dominican republic, fierce winds and storm surge battered the island late wednesday, this is after the storm left a trail of destruction in puerto rico where maria dumped 20 inches of rain and brought savage 155 miles an hour wins, streets flooded and debris flew threw the air there, many residents' vac wait todd safe buildings. cabrera rode out the storm with her children in the shelter. >> when winds started to increase, we were very scared. the roof started falling. >> reporter: this couple on vacation took shelter from the

storm in a hotel. >> the noise, i mean it just sounded like the water, you know, you could hear the doors shaking, it sounded like it was going to come into the building. >> reporter: puerto rico's emergency management officials say hundreds of home were destroyed and entire island is now without power. national hurricane center says after passing by dominican republic today maria is expect to move to turks and caicos where some residents are leaving. others are staying and stocking up on fuel and fuel. >> went to the gas station, filled up my tank, after here i will go to the food store and stock up on some food and i will good from there. >> reporter: southeastern bohamas are also in the path of the destruction. now, maria has already left at least 10 people dead throughout the caribbean and maria is not yet done with puerto rico. officials expect this storm to drop between 20 and 30 inches of rain on that island through saturday. we are live, jan carabao for

cbs-3 "eyewitness news", new back to you. >> what a mess. down in florida a massive effort is underway to rebuild the florida keys after hurricane irma's devastated that region. house speaker paul ryan took an aerial tour of the damage. he late's shourd that the federal government support for those affected by the deadly storm. florida governor rick scott and senator bill nelson toured nearby shelters. earthquake in mexico has taken at lee 245 lives. >> dozens of people have also been rescued. cbs news correspondent chris martinez is live where crews are working around the clock searching for survivors, good morning, chris. >> reporter: good morning, and this is one of the spots we are talking about where crews are working really non-stop, it just does not stop here for these folks in search and rescue mode, this was an office building what you are looking at now and collapsed on tuesday in that earthquake and they have been searching the ruble since then looking for survivors, scenes like

this, playing out this morning , all across the region a little girl is alive but still stuck under the ruble of what used to be her school in mexico city. she has been moving her fink ers in response to calls from rescuers all day and night crews have been trying to reach her and any other students who may still ab live this rescuer telling a reporter that special cameras they are using indicate that there are at lee two other children still inn side. dramatic video from earlier in the day shows two students being pulled to safety through cracks in the debris. school crumbled tuesday during the massive earthquake killing more than two dozen, mostly children, a few are still unaccounted for. here in mexico city nearly 40 buildings collapsed, officials say, more than 50 people have been rescued alive, from the ruble left behind. this woman was pulled through a hole in the ceiling more

than 24 hours after the quake hit, this man was carried away on a stretcher after being trapped inside his building where bottom two floors collapsed on to each other like a pan cake. mexican president enrique pena nieto says efforts are underway to help those left without homes, but the priority, almost two days after the quake remains saving lives. and for everyone of the buildings or structures that were flattened like this one there are many, many more that were damaged in some way. we are told as many as 2,000 public schools in this region, sustained some type of damage on tuesday. other good news folks from this area say that power now is nearly fully restored, to the almost 4 million people who lost it during the earthquake, jim and rahel, back to you. >> incredible, chris martinez

live in mexico city, mexico, chris, thank you. in other news a woman is critically injured after being hit by a koran roosevelt boulevard. it happened around 9:30 near southampton road. police say victim who was in her 20's was struck in the northbound inner lanes, and this was initially reported as a hit/run but we're told that the driver did return to the scene. teachers in the methacton school district have ended their strike and will return to work tomorrow. teachers union and the methacton education association have agreed to enter none in binding arbitration, teachers went on strike on monday and they were at odd with the district over medical premiums. teachers have been working without a contract since january, schools are closed to day for rosh hashanah. still ahead on "eyewitness news" this morning president obama is slamming efforts to repeal and replace his health care plan, hear what he says frustrates him the most. plus jose is now a tropical storm but it is still packing a punch along east coast, he was expect to bring flooding and strong wind today

it looks very warm. high was 60 degrees. i came back, flight attendant says on land, 80 degrees. how about it, a little taste of july to kick off the fall. it seems backward. in the like it has never happened but it will be very warm. we will have a cool start up at broad headville. a few cloud helping to limit the cooling taking place this morning, for the most part, we are under a generally clear skies, but jose as we were just talking about still out there, still churning away and bringing more for at this point strong surf and rip currents. no more wet weather at lee not right now. that storm is very sluggish in the next couple daisy don't think that wave heights per se is a as it is the chopines of the surf and the strength of the rip current risk. so that will last us right through the rest of the week my advice is this if you like

the off season you will have perfect beach weather but think about this before you go in the waves. it may be best to stay on dry land. you don't have a lot of life guard around at this point of year abe with that dangerous surf we dent want accidents. stay on the sand and enjoy warmth and sunshine. sun block required, of course. hurricane maria, modeling will take this on a right-hand corner and pass our area some models, out liars bring it further west, thinks something that need to be machine toward in the meantime but for right now, our summer day is looking very quiet. first day of fall is coolest day of the next five and we're going to be flirting with 90 degrees, both, eagles game day sunday and monday, like a said, i love it, i necessity you do too. >> you betty do, i love, summer, period, so we can get that to fall, i'm happy. speaking of that hot weather on sunday tori i will be hosting our first tailgate of the season with pip.

through. lindsey graham and bill cassidy co wrote the plan to eliminate affordable carable subsidy that makes health insurance cheaper and give states lump sum money to create their own health care systems. president trump says he is optimistic. >> you look at the rates and what is happening with premiums, for people that cannot afford obama care, it has been a catastrophic situation. i believe that graham cassidy really will do it the right way and it is the right way. it has tremendous support from republicans. >> republicans need only 50 votes to pass the plan instead of the normal 60 votes in the senate, but the legislative tool that allows that lower vote total expires september 30th. and former president obama speaking out, we don't often hear from him but he says g.o.p. effort to repeal his health care reform would inflict suffering. the president addressed the bill at an event, he said republican events to under mine obama care hurt people it is supposed to help.

>> so when i see people trying to undue that progress for 50th or 60th time, a bill that would raise costs, reduce coverage, it is aggravating. >> president obama says republican efforts would make coverage unavailable to cancer survivors, pregnant woman, children with asthma and others with existing medical problems. well, it is not even halloween yet but national companies are looking to hire workers for the holiday. if you are looking foresees nal job apply now, as the saying goes, the early bird gets the worm. now hiring for the holidays, companies impacted by the gift giving season have big plans to hire seasonal workers. those people who typically get paid hourly and work from november through january. fedex expects to add more than 50,000 of those employees to help get packages where they need to go. ups wants to hire about 95,000 seasonal workers, and target plans to stock its stores with

most common reasons people visit the doctor many of experienced it at some point in our lifetime. >> is what best way to bounce back from back pain. family physician doctor jen cuddle is here, with that advice. good morning. >> doctor jen. >> good morning. >> is there different degrees of back pain. >> there are, and tour point, rahel, i think you mentioned this going to your doctor for low back pain is second most common reason that people see their doctor behind colds, flu s. 80 percent will get low back pain. we have acute le back pain what back pain from lifting something or something happens and you get it, it last less than four weeks. we have subacute which is four to 12 week and chronic low back pain greater than 12 weeks. ites defined by time. just to be clear we are talking about non-specifically back pain, back pain that is not caused by any particular reason, but less dangerous, muscle sprains, strains, i wanted to say that, is there different causes of back pain. >> doctor jen, i feel like there are misconception about back pain.

is best rest best for curing or fix ago leave eighthing back pain. >> a lot of people think they should rest, bed rest, if they have low back pain, for most of us, it is non-specifically back pain that answer is no. bed rest can make your back pain worse because of the muscle spasm. so that is really important. activity tends to be better. >> does heavy lifting cause it i have pulled a few muscles in the pennsylvania and it does take a few weeks. >> it can. you are right. if you pull a muscle in your back if you get a muscle strain/sprain very common cause for non-specifically back pain you don't want to be lifting heavy objects. i tell people, always you want to keep moving but lifting heavy objects can be difficult make sure you lift appropriate ly from your knees, hold item close tour trunk, be careful, things like that. >> heavy objects we hear about book bags for woman, our purse s. >> oh, lord my purse. >> okay. heavy school purses, do they contribute to that back pain.

>> yes, they can, to my back pain. i shouldn't talk about my purse. my purse is way too heavy but you are right backpacks, kid are back in school now, we actually recommend for kid their backpack weigh no more than 15 to 20 percent of their body weight. it is important to keep in mind that yes, ladies and gentlemen don't carry big, large, bags, purses, and things for kid. >> we are seeing more kid wheeling their book bags, yeah >> with the wheels, i like that idea. >> how do you cope with just day in and day out pain. >> yes, day in, day out it is important to make sure we have preventive things. we have a full screen here. make sure you are stretching and exercising before physical activity. that will help you prevent low back pain. don't slouch sitting and standing. just as i read that, yes, we all sat up straighter. we want to make sure our work surface is at a comfortable height and using chairs with good back support. comfortable low healed shoes are important. these are things that will hi
