island in ruins. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarter in new york. i'm brook silva-braga in for anne-marie green. we begin with the rhett rinne between north korean president kim jong-un and president trump. this morning kim jong-un called president trump mentally dera e deranged. he said mr. trump would pay dearly for his remarks at the u.n. president trump promised sanctions against the countries who trade with north korea. >> it's a great threat to peace and security in our world, and it is unacceptable that others financially support this criminal rogue regime. >> meanwhile it's reported that the north korean foreign minister said his country might conduct a hydrogen bomb test in the pacific ocean.

now to hurricane maria, the recovery will take months if not longer. the coast guard rescued three people from an overturned ship near the puerto rican island. it had been caught in the storm the day before. fema said it will open an air bridge to deliver some much needed supplies. limited supplies are expected as well. the entire island is blacked out. many may have to live without electricity for months. much of the infrastructure is also dried or damaged. david begnaud is in san juan. >> reporter: residents of puerto rico waded through the mess hurricane maria left behind. flooding is widespread and electricity is nonexistent. 20 minutes in san juan, police and volunteers are looking to rescue people trapped by maria's storm surge. they helped this man and his dog

get out and get to dry land. they're talking to people and asking them what the situation is in their home. across the island streets that don't look like rivers are covered in power lines. maria's 155-mile-per-hour winds crushed what was already a weak power grid. officials cannot say when it will be restored. before slamming puerto rico, maria roared across the mountainous island of dominica. the death toll climbs to 15 and the search continues. the storm passed the island as a category 3. maria is moved toward turks and caicos. president trump has approved a federal disaster declaration for. >> reporter: >> how did you feel when you saw the rescue come? >> happy. very happy. >> reporter: with so many communities cut off, the full extent of the damage is not yet known. david begnaud, san juan, puerto

rico. in mexico the death toll from tuesday's earthquake has now topped 270 people. more than 2,000 were injured, and the search for survivors trapped in collapsed buildings continues. but the search for one girl who made headlines from around the world turns out to have been a false report. nikki battiste has the report. good morning. >> that's right, brook. the child became a symbol of hope, but no family members came forward to identify her and her name wasn't registered at the school. rescue crews with dogs in and around mexico city spent a third full day and nighting for survivors of tuesday's earthquake. survivors are still being found. this is a rescuer crawling between two collapsed walls pulling a woman to safety.

mexican president enrique pena nieto said there are still damaged buildings. he said rescues will continue as long as there's hope of anyone trapped or alive. at one of the schools that collapsed stories spread among media that a girl was stuck under the rubble. it gripped the nation. turns out the story wasn't true. officials say all of the children inside had been accounted for. they point out a staff member is in there and may still be alive. nine children and six adults were killed. a scary moment during the day as they had to stop during the day when a reported alarm rang of an aftershock. they yelled out yes we can. it remains unclear how the rumor

of the little girl being rescued got start. >> nikki, still a lot to follow. violence erupted during the speech by the president of turkey in new york city. president erdogan was speaking when a man yelled "you're a terrorist." he has been criticized for a crackdown against his moent foll following a turkish coup last year. the two have a relationship. facebook says it will share with congress some 3,000 ads that were created by russia. >> reporter: in a live appearance on facebook mark zuckerberg admitted russia found

it easy to place ads on faceback without being discovered. >> most apps can be bought without ever speaking to someone at facebook. >> reporter: facebook admits its internal investigation found more than 3,000 ads costing more than $100,000. facebook said the vast majority of ads didn't specifically reference the u.s. presidential election or particular candidate but focused on amplifying social and political messages. it will now be turned over to congressional investigator. for months facebook denied there was any evidence that russians had paid for election advertising. >> i feel like facebook finally has been responsive, but the proof will be in the extent of the tears they give us next week and then will they continue to

work with us to identify other sites that may have originated in russia. they've identified one russian troll farm. >> reporter: the identity should not have been an issue. >> they should have known it comes from the nation state people often call russia. >> reporter: zuckerberg has made it easier to identify who's paying for ads. >> we can't stop all but we can make it harder. >> reporter: there's suh suspicion the russians may have had some help from inside the united states. an investigation is under way in oklahoma city after police there shot and killed a deaf man. on tuesday night officers responded to a hit-and-run accident. they came across this man holding a metal pipe.

he didn't respond to command and witnesses yelled to the officers he can't hear you. one fired his taser, the other his gun. it raises a lot of questions about training. zachary adams is charged in the murder of holly bobo. she was reported missing in 2011. her body was discovered three years later. two other men are also charged in the case. they relied on statements from adams' family, friends and other inmates to connect him to bobo. coming up on the "morning news," a man released from prison. and mystery green water, we'll tell you what's causing that. this is the "cbs morning news." stacked with 17 grams of protein.

well, you sometimes see green water maybe around st. paddy's day. we're a long way from march. so when people in shall met, louisiana, started seeing green water in the mississippi rivering it turns out it was green food coloring being used to test a refinery tank. they say it's harmless and will work its way out of the water in a few days. there was a dramatic car fire rescue and possible drone missions. "the new york times" says the trump administration is poised to drop some limits on drone strike and commando raids. they have reportedly proposed dropping it. the new level would allow the targeting of foot soldiers and end the need for the strikes to be done by a high level official.

once on top of the world, five years ago considered one of the best young stars in the nfl, but by this last april, he was a convicted murderer serving a life sentence when he killed himself in prison. his family decided to donate his brain to the boston university cte research center and his lawyer jose baez released the results. >> aaron hernandez had the advanced stage of cte which is usually found in a 70-year-old man. >> reporter: hernandez was 27 years oil when he died. symptoms inclusion depression, aggression, and suicidal tendencies. the family blames the nfl for his death, suing the league and the new england patriot
