>> so kinds, they did everything they could to help us. >> weary residents and travelers escaping the destruction? puerto rico arrive in philadelphia on the first flight here from the hurricane battered island. we'll hear about their experiences surviving hurricane maria. >> armed and dangerous, the search is now on for this man who police say shot a woman as she answered the door at her montgomery county home. >> and we're starting the first full day of fall, but it sure won't feel like t could you even hit 09 degrees this weekend. >> today is saturday, september 23rd, good morning, i'm jan carabeo. so let's start with that forecast.

here's meteorologist, matt peterson with eyewitness weather. good saturday morning, matt. i did unscientific pole on twitter to see what people were feeling like. turns out more people are looking forward to fall than i expected. >> great minds think alike. >> right? >> you won't get that this weekend? >> no, we won't get it until maybe next weekend. >> okay? >> i know you. i know meisha in the morning show, she loves her 90's. you guys like your warm weather. and it is going to stick around, it looks like, as i said, probably well through next week. now, there is 90s in the forecast. they're going to possibly be here tomorrow, maybe even the start of the work week. but before we get there we have to deal with another warm day across the delaware valley on our saturday, definitely another above average afternoon. outside on storm scan, not much going on, few very high clouds, here or there. but, for the most part, it is a clear and quiet start to our day, on storm scan, we'll take a look little further out toward the open ocean. this was jose.

yesterday was a post tropical cyclone, of course we do know it was a tropical storm and hurricane at one point, right now, it is not even anything. it is just call it the remnants of jose. but doesn't even have any kind of tropical designation any more, just area of low pressure that continues to spiral up the coast of new england, will still churn up the surf along the new jersey shore, will allow the development of dangerous rip current at times along the jersey shore back toward delaware, as well, even though no long area tropical system. still keeping an eye on the effect of jose. temperatures out there this morning were in the 60s, warm start to the day, not going to be overly mug think afternoon, good news for us, but quickly warm up to 71 by 9:00. check this out. all the way to 86 degrees later this afternoon, and jan, with the nine's come the chance for maybe some record high temperatures, both sunday , monday, break down the chances coming up in just a bit. >> interesting, thank you, matt. the first flight has landed in philadelphia from for the reijo since hurricane maria

hit the island on wednesday. "eyewitness news" reporter anita oh, live in the cbs-3 news center more from people who made it safely back to the u.s. anita, good morning. >> good morning, those on board had waited without water or power for hours because flight delays at the puerto rico airport, as you'll see shortly you can just sense the emotion, many torn between relief and making it to safety and heart break for the people of puerto rico. >> i felt like we were going to die. >> emotional angelo rivera spoke to "eyewitness news" after touching down at the philadelphia airport, late friday night after hurricane maria devastated the island. >> evacuated us, walls were shaking, chandelier was shaking, floor was shaking, then they moved us to the stairwell where for eight hours we were 20 people in the size of a bathroom. the wind sounds like a freight train. >> rivera who lives in man manchester new jersey said she

flew to puerto rico a week ago for vacation spent three days in peace before the storm. >> we were folding according to the noaa there were storms down in the caribbean, that's how it developed from tropical storm to hurricane. >> but she praises the people of puerto rico who helped her and so many others to safety in a time of complete chaos. >> everything was down. there was no power, no water, no nothing, nothing. whatever they had they were willing to share with each and everyone of us. they are wonderful people. high myra and her children also landed in philadelphia from the same flight after waiting for hours at the airport. she said had to resort to old-fashioned security and check in methods verifying each person and bag by hand due to lack of power. >> there is no light. there is no food. there is no electricity. there is no gas. so everybody is like cows over

there. we survived something that we never imagined. >> while their feet are on the grounds in the delaware valley , their hearts remain with their home territory. >> the islands, it is devastating what hurricane maria has done, 100% of the islands is without power. almost no water. we need your help. we need everybody's help in rebuilding the island. >> now, limited flights from certain areas are expected to resume to puerto rico over the weekends, though none of those are scheduled into or out of the philadelphia airport as of this hour. for now liver in the news center, anita oh, cbs-3 " eyewitness news." >> anita, thank you. hurricane maria has reportedly taken at least 13 lives there in puerto rico. officials are rushing to evacuate about 70,000 people who live down stream from the failing damn. water started gushing through a crack in that damn after over dozen inches of rain. the storm has knocked down 85% of the island's 1600 cell

phone towers, as well, a government spokesperson says officials have been unable to reach more than half of the island's municipalities, all power is now out, and almost all water systems are down. more than 15,000 people are in shelters. >> back here at home, police are looking for the driver who left man in critical condition in the glenwood section of north philadelphia. police say the hit-and-run accident happened around 1:00 this morning at broad street and glenwood avenue. so far investigators don't have a description of the car that was responsible, and no word yet on what caused the hit-and-run. >> another overnight hit-and-run in philadelphia. this one in kensington. police say just before 1:00 this morning, a person was struck at eighth and tioga street, the victim in critical condition. officers still looking for driver and description of the striking vehicle. a man is expected to be okay today after he shot in the leg overnight in north philadelphia. police say this shooting happened at north 27th and west sergeant street right

around 1:30 a.m. this morning. no word on arrest or motive for the gunfire. meantime the search is on for a police who shot a woman as she answered the door at heard montgomery county home. authorities believe the victim knows her attacker. the shooting happened on long meadow road in limerick yesterday. "eyewitness news" reporter alexandria hoff talked with a neighbor who came face-to-face with the suspect. walked walking in the yards to address him, he never looked at me, he just walked calmly toward his car, got in, and drove away. >> mary johnson lives on long meadow road in limerick township. she was brought to her front lawn after hearing gunshots. >> i heard some shots and screaming. >> the commotion was coming from a home across the street. >> thought it was just some kids playing around, and i realize that it sounded more serious. >> when she came outside she found herself face-to-face with a man that she now believes shot her neighbor. >> so i went down the yard to investigate. and saw the suspect leaving the house. >> police say that around

12:30 p.m., 30 year old greg feldman of harleysville approached that home and knocked, shooting 48 year old woman twice in her chest, when she opened the door. from the home, the suspect fled. >> we believe mr. feldman to be armed at this point. >> according to montgomery county district attorney, kevin spiel, feldman was known to the woman and her family. >> we know that there was a relationship, a familiar relationship in the past, and we need to find him as soon as we can. >> since learning more about what happened, johnson now reflect on the man that she saw walking away from the scene. >> just calm, determined, looked like he was caring something, or had his arm, something bulky under his sweat jacket. he didn't seem to be in any rush or anything, that would have been a red flag for me. >> according to authorities, the suspect was last seen

driving a 2016 black mazda sedan, with pennsylvania taguchi kfc-4605. again, he's considered armed and very dangerous. if you see him do not approach do call 911. reporting in montgomery county , alexandria hoff, cbs-3 , "eyewitness news." >> philadelphia police are investigating how a toddler got ahold after handgun and shot his own uncle. chopper three over 16th and arch street in center city philadelphia yesterday. police say the three year old accidentally fired another family member's gun, from the back seat to this suv. the bullet struck the child's 24 year old uncle in his shoulder. he's now in stable condition. police say the gun was privately owned by the child's other uncle, who was a philadelphia housing authority officer. >> in other news this morning, federal authority have told pennsylvania officials that russian hackers unsuccessfully tried to access it election system there is happened before the presidential election. a spokesperson for governor wolf says pennsylvania was one

of 21 state targeted by the russians. authority say there is no evidence the election system was breached. republican senator john mccain one again throwing party into repeal and replace the affordable care act. mola lenghi. >> once again, senator john mccain may have killed the republican effort to repeal and replace obama care. friday he joined rand paul in opposing healthcare bill sponsored by senators lindsey graham and bill cassidy. in a statement, arizona republican said, quote, can i not in good conscious vote for the gram-cassidy proposal. i believe we can do better working together republicans and democrat. it was mccain who cast the deciding vote against the repeal and replace bill in july. >> it will fail if republicans lose even one more vote. the white house is now turning up the pressure on still undecided lawmakers. >> the for seven years i've

response the sanctions overeats nuclear and missile testing north korea threatened to test hydrogen bomb in the pacific ocean. last night the president said i'll deal with kim jong un. >> the devastating earthquake has climbed to at least 295 people. one survival story is giving hope to families of the missing. rescuers pulled a woman from the rubble of a building yesterday after six hours of working. her name is pauline a gomez, the human resources worker was at her office when the earthquake struck on tuesday. she managed not only -- not to suffer any major injuries, as well. more than 60 people have been pulled from the rubble alive. >> well still ahead right here on cbs-3 "eyewitness news" this saturday morning. summer over, and the fall season is here, still, big crowds are expected down the shore this weekend. but a warning, this weekend, as well, we'll tell you why extra crews will be patrolling the beaches. >> whether you're an athlete or just have wear and tear on

>> hurricane jose is leaving the jersey shore but rip currents could continue as hurricane maria moves north. officials in north wildwood are bringing back lifeguards

this weekend, even though the season is now over. and that's because tens every thousands of people will be in town for the irish festival. officials expect many of them will swim in the rough surf there. five beaches between seventh and 22nd streets will be guarded, officials strongly recommend swimming only at guarded beaches. matt, we expect whole lot of people down the shore, and with the forecast being so down right hot. >> it will feel like june, july. >> incredible. >> you think that we're in the middle of the thick of the summertime. >> yes, and i know the businesses down there, they love this. >> any time, i was going to say, any time they can get a couple every extra weeks, always good for them, especially since we are eventually cooling offer. probably by next week. >> yes. >> it is expected. >> eventually, eventually we do have the cool-down. but just before we really get into the thick of what's going to be happening with the forecast, want to show this interesting stat i found yesterday. so clinging to summer first. we've been talking about the chance even already here this morning of some 90's, tomorrow , possibly even early

next week. so on average, the last day that we see 09 degrees here in philly, and the surrounding areas, is september 1st. so again, few weeks ago, on average, the last day that we see 90 degrees. the latest that we've seen 90 is october 10th. that was in 1939. so, our chances for 90's, again, tomorrow, and into early next week, definitely the exception to the rule when it comes to late season heat here in the philadelphia area. now, temperatures today, we don't get really close to zero nine. we will be in the mid to upper 80s range. so definitely above average for sure. 86 degrees, but the good news like yesterday, our humidity stays low. there are a few times through the middle of the week where dew point got little hi, it felt maybe even little uncomfortable, even though temperatures were slightly cooler, but does look like yesterday, again humidity will stay low even if temperatures are on the way up. outside right now, there is not whole lot going on, our neighborhood network, taking a look from the palmyra cove nature park, when the sun does come up, see great picture of

the skyline. 68 degrees, just across the bridge over in new jersey. now, storm scan3, this is what's going on, kind of widespread across the country, you see we had this area of shower and precipitation, some thunderstorm activity from south dakota nebraska, the rocky mountains, but if you look from all the way the midwest, to the east coast, it is clear. it is dry. high pressure is in control. we had this big upper level ridge, which is just pumping in all of this warm air down from the south. so that's why the eastern half of the us is just so warm. and even the midwest, as well, has seen record highs through the end of the week. now, this trough is cold front that's out here far off to the west, is eventually going to start pushing to the east. and as it does it, will bring in the chance for some cooler temperatures, but that's not going to be until we get like i said maybe to the end of next week. now, little closer to home, there is few high clouds here and there, on storm scan3, but overall it is a quiet morning. take a look at the future

weather by lunchtime today, sunshine for us, another warm afternoon, temperatures up to the 80s. as we look into tomorrow afternoon, few extra clouds are out there. don't be worried. it is not going to be a cloudy day. it will be mostly sunny afternoon. again, don't be worried about the little spot of green. future weather trying to paint in shower chance overdoing it. we're not going to see any precipitation tomorrow. really the same goes for monday, as women, future weather once again tries to bring in better chance for maybe few showers, again, overdoing those chances right now, looks like it will just be mostly sunny day monday. where we could get maybe as high as 09 degrees. so 86 today. 94 degrees tomorrow for sunday it will be hot at the birds game. 91 degrees monday. our record high monday is 92, set in 1970. so take taking a look at. that will here we go, tuesday , 85. wednesday, 87. then jan, cooler temperatures toward the ends every next week, back down to the 70s, hopefully knock on wood, next friday. >> thank you, 5:19 now. looking for a cardiovascular

up today. this may be one of the last really warm weekends of the entire year. there you go. meteorologist, matt peterson live on the skydeck this morning with eyewitness weather. matt, it feels nice out there, right, no jacket required? >> no jacket. i think the heat is going to your head though, jan. >> i know, that's okay, i'll deal. >> you're so excited. i know you love these 90s possibly coming up, maybe have even as early as tomorrow, into next week. but, then as you said, it is a mild morning for us. you don't need the jacket as you step outside side. i will say on the skydeck from time to time there is little bit after breeze. it won't and breezy day though , unfortunately. and even though our temperatures are mild, it still has the feel of a little bit after fall morning, because the humidity is solo at times, earlier this week, did have little bit of sticky feeling out there tuesday, wednesday, even into thursday, but as much as yesterday was on the lower side of things with the humidity, today might actually be little bit better. outside on storm scan3 right

now, we are looking at relatively quiet conditions. not much going on. few high clouds. that's really up out -- about it. don't forget about the tropics there is still of course hurricane marie arc still major category three storm spiraling through the tropics. it is now still staying east of the bahamas, and the turks and caikos, does not look like it will be making any kind of effect at least landfall wise in those areas down in the caribbean. the models for us here this morning, they continue to show that maria is likely to head up to the north, and it will then eventually start to skirt its way out to sea, but we will be keeping an eye on it in the next couple of days, into next week, too, i'll give you better update what's going on in the tropics when i come back inside. one more time here hour by hour forecast for today, all the way to 86 degrees later this afternoon, jan, all kind of sunshine out there, as i said, maria still spiraling in the caribbean. an update on that when i come back inside. >> thank you. turning to the aftermath of maria, a flight has landed

safely in philadelphia from puerto rico. it is the first one to make it here from the island since it was battered by hurricane maria. "eyewitness news" reporter live with more from people who made it back safely, anita? >> reporter: good morning. no power, no water, no gas, that's what the people of puerto rico are dealing with after the hurricane. and those trying to escape the devestation were delayed at the airport therefore hours yesterday. late last night, some landed here in philadelphia filled with emotion, as you can imagine, but while feet are safely on the ground here in the delaware vale, their heart rear main with their home territory. >> it felt like we were going to die. >> emotional angela riviera spoke with "eyewitness news" after touching down at the philadelphia airport late friday night after hurricane maria devastated the island. >> evacuated us into a ballroom. the walls are shake. chandelier was shaking. floor was shaking. then they moved us to the stairwell where for eight

meantime, the entire islands is still without power. cbs news correspondent david begnaud explains, even food and water are becoming hard to find. >> what do you suggest we do? >> san juan crews waded through the hardest hit street of her sit. >> i this is the area called ocean park. it has got a little bit too much ocean right now. >> all around her, flood water , and devestation. >> it is unfathomable. think of your worse nightmare. and there it is, no power anywhere in puerto rico. no water. we have the reservoirs, drinking water, have been depleted. very quickly running out. >> already residents are trying to cope without power. out-dated and fragile, most of puerto rico's power lines are above grounds. no match for maria. some families resort today cooking outside. >> is this all one family? >> a flashlight with their

only source of light. ricardo ramos runs the islands ' power company. >> what are we talking, weeks without power or months? >> i think we're going to be talking about months, if we go back to history, under hurricane hugo, it took six months to restore power to everyone. >> at this san juan orphanage for girls, food and water are running out. sister bitty. >> we're still looking -- >> we want to give them everything they need. but without food and water we cannot give them anything. already, $74 billion in debt, the challenge of rebuilding for puerto rico will be daunting. david begnaud, for cbs-3, " eyewitness news". >> a local representative with ties to puerto rico is working to get people here at home involved in the island's recovery. state representatives, angel cruz, represent part of philadelphia including juniata and harrow gate. he is native of puerto rico. not only is he working with mayor ken toy take in puerto ricans, seeking refuge, cruz

also spreading the words about philadelphia's puerto rican day parade this weekend. >> we're not celebrating anything, a loft people are sad because of the hurricane situation, but we will unite, use it as a way that we can raise funds, so whether weaver communication, and they call us and say this is what we need, we're ready, able and capable. >> now the 53rd annual puerto rican day parade is actually tomorrow on the ben franklin parkway. it start at 10:00 in the morning and ends around 12:30 in the afternoon. mexico city's devastating earthquake has killed at least 295 people. but one-story is instilling fate that survivors are hanging in there. cbs news correspondent panel, has the story of woman trapped under tons of debris for days. >> this was the moment rescuers first made contact with a woman named paulinea. her foot barely visible.

>> we rec you move your hands, the rescuer says. can you hear me? there you are. the woman, a human resources worker, was at her office, when the earthquake struck tuesday. >> we will get to you, he says , hold on. one of the thousands of amateur search and rescue workers who have trained for this type of disaster. >> what did you hear down there? >> i'm here. just i'm here. >> twice they had to leave paulinea for their own safety as the rubble became unsteady making the space even tighter. >> so about a foot? >> yes, yes, something like, yes. >> they had to borough down two stories, and then use cables to attempt to pull her to safety. now wearing a hard hat and six hours after they first found her, paulinea was rescued. >> what does it represent for this country? >> hope. >> hope? a bit of good news. >> surprisingly, paulinea was not seriously injured, one of

>> even though it is only september, many national companies already have their sites set on the holidays as they release plans to beef up casting before the busy shopping season gets underway. three on your side's jim donovan takes a look at who is hiring. >> now hiring for the holidays , companies for the gift differing company has plans to hire seasonal workers , those who work from november through january. fedex expect to add more than 50,000 of those employees to help get packages where they need to go. ups want to hire about 95,000 seasonal workers, and target plans to stock it stores with people, adding about 100,000 jobs. amazon, gap, toys "r" us, are also hiring seasonal

what we also start to see the systems move little faster. so as we take a look at what we are looking at here, tomorrow by 2:00 still well off the coast, even getting into early next week, still category three storm, but down to 150-mile per hour winds. again, still offer coast of the united state but starting to work it way maybe little bit closer to the outer banks, then going to curve back out to the open waters as we get into the middle, and then the ends of next week. that's good news for us it, will continue to weaken, as it moves up the coastline. because of again cooler water, and also get into an upper level pattern that doesn't really allow it to continue to stay organized. storm scan3, back here closer, little closer to home anyway. now there is was jose. there is really nothing left of it at this point. we can't even call it post tropical cyclone, no tropical designation that goes along with this, just area of low pressure, that's spirals off the coast of new england. and then, the effect whatever was jose, still could be felt through today, and then some of the effect of maria going

being, experts say technology is a big reason why kids are so inactive, which is linked to the obesity epidemic. according to the cdc, more tan 12 million us children and teenagers are overweight. >> try to encourage them in anyway that you can to get outside and do more activity. >> new study found that on average 19 year old are about as active as sedentary 60 year old. the study looked at data for more than 12,000 participants, in a national health and nutritional survey. instead of doing so much of this, teens should be getting? >> at least 60 minutes a day of physical activity, we want them to be active, you know, getting sweaty, getting short of breath, like really pushing in, trying to do the most that they can. >> in addition to being overweight, sedentary teens have an increased risk for variety at this of health problems including heart disease, diabetes, cancer. doctors say to encourage more activity, parent should have some rules about technology. >> setting limit, healthy let for screen time, making sure
