center in philadelphia, this is cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> well, good evening everyone, i'm natasha brown. thanks for joining us. buildings collapsing again. another powerful earthquake hits mexico and tonight the aftershock is causing a major setback in the search for survivors. "eyewitness news" reporter alycia nieves is live in the sat center. she's got the latest for us tonight. >> reporter: natasha, the aftershock not only rattled rescuers in mexico but it sent them running and put a pause on rescue efforts, efforts to find people going on four days of being trapped under that rubble. a aftershocks sent people once again running into the streets reason search and rescue crews evaporating already mounds of debris. the quake brought down this bridge. once the ground stopped shaking, crews returned to what's left of the six story

office building in mexico city where more than 40 people were listed as missing. maria mendoza has been camped out here since tuesday. her cousin was working on the fourth floor of the building when the quake hit. >> the window they found people on the fourth floor. i think that they found like two people and that some of them like they showed they are alive. >> reporter: they showed signs of life. >> uh-huh. we are like hoping for him to be a one of those. >> reporter: parts of the city are trying to reopen for business leading to tensions. as an officer tried to reopen a busy boulevard searchers and family members who wanted silence protested. still hoping to hear sounds from possible survivors under the rubble. and a number of people rescued from collapsed buildings in mexico has reached nearly 70 but as the days go on the hopes of finding other diminishes. still crews continue to

search. live in the sat center alycia nieves, cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> alycia thank you. also hurricane maria devastated puerto rico. power is knocked out for millions. communication nearly nonexistent at this point and now there is a new threat. a dam in puerto rico that's in danger of breaking is still holding at least for now. but according to the governor, about 70,000 people near the dam should still evacuate. forecasters said that a dam breach could lead to potentially life-threatening flooding downstream. it's just another reason philadelphia is opening its doors to evacuees. "eyewitness news" reporter anita oh caught up with some folks who made it in on a late night flight on friday. >> i thought we were going to die. >> an emotional angela rivera spoke with "eyewitness news" after touching down at philadelphia international airport late friday night. >> evacuated into a ballroom

room. the walls were shaking floor was shaking. then they moved us to the stairwell where for eight hours we were 20 people in a room the size of a bathroom. and the wind just sounded like a freight train. >> rivera who lives in manchester new jersey says she flew to puerto rico a week ago for vacation and spent three days in peace before the storm. >> how fast it developed. >> but she praises the people of puerto rico who helped her and so many others to safety in a time of complete chaos. >> everything is down. they have no power, no water. they have nothing. nothing. and whatever they had, they were willing to share with each and every one of us. they are a wonderful people. >> myra soto and her children also landed in philadelphia from the same flight after waiting for hours at the airport. she says it had to resort to old fashioned security check

in methods verifying each person and bag by hand due to lack of power. >> there's no light. there's no food. there's no electricity. there's no gas. so, everybody -- we survived something that we never imagine. >> anita oh, cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> well, we are following some breaking news right now. philadelphia police are investigating shots fired at officers in north philadelphia tonight. we're live near 13th and york street here where police have set up a perimeter. officers say two men were firing rounds at police in this area. allegedly unprovoked. officers did return fire but we are told nobody was injured. both of the men ran after this exchange. now, we also understand that police aren't allowing any transportation through that area right now while that investigation is ongoing. also police are

investigating possible acid attacks at a shopping center in london. video has now emerged on social media showing emergency services on the scene. police say they were called to the area surrounding stratford center in east london after reports of a group of males spraying what was believed to be a noxious substance. six people were reportedly injured. one person was arrested. police are not investigating this as a terror attack at this point. and now in other news tonight firefighters respond to a hazmat situation in wilmington, delaware. officials say 18 workers at the dupont experimental station were possibly exposed to an unknown substance. "eyewitness news" on powder mill road this morning. the workers went through a decontamination process and were taken to the hospital. officials say none of them were seriously injured. and philadelphia police meantime are investigating a deadly hit-and-run on broad street. "eyewitness news" here at broad and glenwood avenue where officers say a man was hit in the intersection by a

sedan just before 1 o'clock this morning. he was taken to temple hospital where he later died. now, police say they have a suspect in custody but they have not released his or her identity yet. president trump versus the nfl, the nba and some of the nation's top athletes. he criticized players who staged silent protests during the national anthem and some of those athletes are now firing back. cbs correspondent seth lemon reports. >> reporter: the championship winning golden state warriors say it's clear they are not welcome at the white house. so, they're not going. the statement came a day after nba all-star steph curry said he didn't want to go on the tradition visit. >> by acting and not going hopefully that will inspire some change when it comes to what we tolerate in this country and what is accepted. >> reporter: curry's comment prompted a tweet from president trump saying he was withdrawing the invitation. and hours later, the team said

it will visit the capitol but not the white house. >> ♪ >> reporter: the president is also in war of words with the nfl after criticizing football players for kneeling during the national anthem. >> wouldn't you love to see one of these nfl owners when somebody disrespects our flag to say get the that son of a (bleep) off the field right now. out. he's fired. >> reporter: here at nfl headquarters executives were listening. commissioner roger goodell responded with a statement. divisive comments like these demonstrate an unfortunate lack of are for the nfl our great game and all of our players. having officer fended both football and basketball players the president quickly felt the backlash nba star lebron james released a video statement. >> it's even hitting more home for me now even more because he's now using sports as the platform to try to divide usism and chris paul tweeted with everything that's going on in our country, why are you focused on who's kneeling and

visiting the white house? seth lemon for cbs news, new york. >> and philadelphia eagles chairman and ceo jeffrey lurie said this in statement tonight. "the best of us lend our compassion and determination to the aid of others. every day i see the genuine dedication and hard work of our players and i support them as they take their courage, character and commit into our communities to make them better or to call at the he knows to injustice. having spoken with our players i can attest to the great respect they have for the national anthem and all it represents. we at the philadelphia eagles officially believe in this difficult time of division and conflict it is more important than ever for football to be a great unifier ". u.s. air force bombers flew into air space just east of north korea today and according to the pentagon, the flight was a show of force. they say the act demonstrated the range of military options available to the u.s. and the

president. the flight is the farthest north of the demilitarized zone that any u.s. fighter or bomber aircraft has flown off north korea's coast in the 21st century. now iran says it has successfully tested a new ballistic missile that can carry multiple war heads. state run media carried video of the test. the missile test is likely to raise concerns in washington and could also now lead to more sanctions against iran for violating un resolutions. stay with us everyone. still ahead on "eyewitness news" tonight, some local heroes showed off their skills today. straight ahead, a look at why these men and women are demonstrating their life saving abilities at the 63rd annual hero thrill show. lauren. >> the season is certainly fall but temperatures still feel like summer and we get even hotter as high temperatures climb into record territory. i'll let you know when to expect 90's in the forecast coming up.

>> ♪ >> welcome back. local heroes put on quite a show. it was all for a great cause. thousands turned out for the annual hero's thrill show at the wells fargo center today. it's the way to show the family members of local first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice they are supported and their loved ones will never be forgotten. alycia nieves has that story. >> reporter: the 63rd annual hero's thrill show philadelphia's finest performing putting on a show that shows those who have fallen they are not forgotten. >> this is a incredible tradition for a very worthy cause. everybody pitches in and makes it happen and it means a lot to our members to know that this great city has their back

24/7. >> reporter: emergency responders with the city give all they have at this show every year because it raises money that pays for college tuitions for the children of philadelphia's firefighters and police officers killed in the line of duty. >> not i just want to tell you we love you. >> reporter: every year at the show there's this moment recognizing those families whose loved ones sacrificed it all. >> feel the love from everyone and it's really, you know, a good feeling that we have these people to rely on. >> reporter: none of this would be possible without the thousands who attend. >> my father used to bring me down when it was at j.f.k. so just kind of carrying on the tradition with my son. >> we support them as much as we can whenever we can. they have a tough job, a thankless job. >> your presence here today is a testament to the fact that we don't forget our fallen heroes and their families. >> we can't say enough about these family members, many of them who are here today and we always celebrate them and lift them up. >> reporter: annually about 15,000 people attend the

philly's hero thrill show. everyone purchases a ticket so tens of thousands of dollars are raised for family members of fallen emergency responders in the city. in the sat center alycia nieves, cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> also more tributes to the fallen at the sports complex this weekend. the philadelphia fire department hosted the first annual 9/11 memorial stair climb and 5k walk. "eyewitness news" at lincoln financial field. the stair climb honors the memories of the 343 fallen heroes lost in the 9/11 terror attacks on the world trade center. >> 16 years later, you know, we've rallied up and raised some money for the national fallen firefighters foundation and we're going to climb 110 steps to simulate climbing to the top of the world trade centers. >> some of the proceeds will benefit the new york city fire department counseling unit. the jenkintown community came together tonight to raise money for hurricane relief through music.

>> ♪ well, local restaurants contributed food and drinks to the relief concert as music played. all of the donations will be sent to the brothers brother foundation it's based in pittsburgh, pennsylvania. it's one of 10 charities rated by forbes with 100 percent fundraising efficiency. the concert runs through midnight tonight so you still got some time, lauren. you can head out there after work if we can get there fast enough. weather in before it comes to an end. going to happen. it's officially the fall season but you wouldn't know it by the temperatures. we climbed into the upper 80's today. temperatures still very mild at this late hour. 73 degrees as we get a live look at center city philadelphia. lit up in eagles green this evening. temperatures right now, we're still in the 70's in allentown, still in the 70's in wildwood. we're near 70 degrees in trenton and even mild in mount pocono near 60 degrees. there's our high temperature about 13 degrees above our average. 88 today. and as we head into the day tomorrow, for the birds game, taking on the giants, sunshine, 91 degrees and it will be our first 90-degree reading of the month so far. on average though in philadelphia our average date of our last 90-degree day or above is typically september 1st. our latest ever to occur october 10th. so, yeah, we're running way beyond that average date with those 90's in store for tomorrow. stormstorm scan3 showing us the trend of the day.

high pressure in control but still keeping an eye on hurricane maria. still a major hurricane. you can see that clear and well defined eye, winds at 115 miles per hour as of the latest advisory from the national hurricane center just about 15 minutes ago. motion off to the north at about 9 miles an hour. but even a better looking cone of uncertainty for the northeast with more of a dramatic easterly turn in the long range. still a category one as it is offshore of the eastern seaboard. we'll still have to keep an eye on it as we head into the next several days but at this point looks like we'll only see indirect impacts here in the delaware valley from maria and we have some good concentus suspect in our models. we could see more direct impacts along the outer banks of north carolina. a cold front looks like it will kick maria out to sea as we head into the long range and spare us those direction impacts into the second half of next week. checking in on our live

neighborhood network, people still out strolling the boards and it's going to be a great day down the shore tomorrow. sunshine, temperatures warm generally in the 80's, northeasterly winds around five to 10. watch out for that high risk of rip currents overnight tonight, clear skies mild and quiet falling back to 68 degrees and yup, up into record territory tomorrow. 91 degrees would be 4 degrees shy of our record set back in 1970. we have another 90-degree day on monday. tuesday and wednesday are going to be oppressively humid before all of this breaks with a cold front as we head into thursday. same cold front that's going to kick maria out of here will bring us some nice fall-like weather. >> oh, my gosh. but that oppressive kind of threatening. that sounded pretty dire. ranked penn state began big 10 conference play on the road against iowa tonight. last year the nittany lions beat the hawk eyes by 27 points had almost 600 yards of offense. to the game third quarter nittany lions up a point. penn state goes up 15 to seven. under two minutes left penn state up by two. hand off to iowa's zach widely. he's gone 35 yards for the score and the hawk eyes regain the lead. don't worry. penn state gets the ball back. fourth down and goal four seconds left trace mcsorely finds johnson in the end zone for the game winning score and penn state avoids the upset. penn at lehigh. 1500 yards total offense, brooks ran for 268 yards. three short of the school record. they scored 65 points the most since 1946. they beat lehigh 65-47.

>> welcome back. finally tonight a family in west palm beach florida is celebrating after their long lost dog was finally reunited with them this week. now, the family waited for a year and a half for news about their dog relay. he disappeared from his backyard back in february 2016. the four-year-old furry friend somehow managed to travel more than 1200 miles to queens, new york, before his microchip was scanned. >> at first i was in disbelief and then when later on we had gotten a picture sent i had no doubt that was relay and i had this huge weight lifted off my shoulders. >> the family says a sturdier fence has been installed to keep their best friend at home. so happy to be at home. always good to be home right. that's "eyewitness news" everyone, i'm natasha brown for lesley lauren all of us here thanks for joining us. we always appreciate it and we're always on cbsphilly.com. have a great night. >> ♪
