live from the broadcast center in philadelphia. this is cbs-3 "eyewitness news " this morning. shots fired at police and an investigation now underway after bullets fly on a north philadelphia street. >> the day philadelphia football fans have been waiting for, the eagles home opener at the linc, but it does come with some controversy after comment made by president lead to uproar with the nfl and some of the nation's top athletes. >> and it is a hot first few days of fall, climbing into record territory whitt temperature could hit 09 degrees. today is sunday, september , i'm jan carabeo. let's start with that forecast here's meteorologist, chelsey ingram, with eyewitness weather. good sunday morning, chelsey, down right hot yesterday. >> i know.

>> will be even hotter today? >> that's right. we have more hot wet their will be headed our way, as we move into the afternoon today. could you believe it? we could even be talking about high temperature, right around 90 degrees. let's see the current numbers across the region, checking in around 71 degrees in philadelphia, down the shore, low mid 60s. 64 degrees in atlantic city, 63 in wildwood, we're at 62 allentown, 66 mount pocono, right around 68 degrees this morning, in trenton. the record to beat today, that is 95. setback in 1970. and it is very possible, that we could get rather close. but not until later on this afternoon. by 9:00 a.m., warm start to the day. temperatures in the mid 70s, warming up very quickly, into the noon hour, with the temperature around 84, and then by 3:00 p.m., talking about unseasonably hot weather , high of 90 degrees. i'll have your full forecast coming up in just a bit. for now, jan, back to you. >> summer sticking around,

thank you. >> the game comes on the heals of president's later rant targeting the nfl and the nba. "eyewitness news" reporter anita oh, liver at the linc this morning where fans are expected to not only be talking about the game but also the common made by the president, good morning. >> good morning, jan, we will get to the controversy in just a moment. we are starting to see eagles fans lining up here to get into tailgate at the linc also watching the fall out between president donald trump and some of the nation's top athlete, because of some recent comments, he's made. the president withdrew white house invitation to the golden state warriors a day after seth curry stated he would not be making the traditional visit, in order to make a statement of quote what we tolerate in this country. he also said the president addressing him by name is not what leaders do.

but beyond the nba, trump also criticized nfl players, such as colin kaepernick, knelt in protest during the national anthem during games. >> wouldn't outlove see one of these nfl owner when somebody disrespects our flag to say get that son of a beep off the field right now, out, he's fired. >> now, in response to some of trump's comments, eagles ceo jeff lurie put out statement saying having spoken with our players i can a test to the great respect they have for the national anthem, and all it represents. we of philadelphia eagles firmly believe that in this difficult time of division and conflict more important than ever for football to be a great aoun if few err. group called stands standing for cap nerve is planning protest at the guesser game at each nfl stadium this season, and they'll do so here at 11:00 a.m., ahead of the game at 1:00. of course we'll keep you updated on.

that but jan, as i mentioned, the line really starting to pick up here outside of the link. and we will stay with you this morning, and bring you more on the excitement around this home opener. for now live at the linc this morning, anita oh, cbs-3, " eyewitness news". >> philadelphia police are searching for two men this morning, they say, opened fire on officers overnight. shoot-out happened near 13th and york streets in north philadelphia, very active scene there overnight. police say, around 10:00, the two men started firing rounds at police, in the area allegedly unprovoked. officers did return fire, but were told no one has been injured. both of the men got away after the exchange every gunfire. police also responded to gunfire in center city this morning. officers in the area heard the gunshots, from the 1300 block of chancellor street. we're told the shots were not directed at police officers there, but they were close by. no one was injured. >> a woman hospitalized this morning after she was shot in

east germantown. this shooting happened around midnight along the 5600 block of stokes street. police tell us that the woman was shot in her left thigh. she is in stable condition. so far no word on any arrests. well, large fire broke out at building in south philadelphia early this morning. this is near water and morris streets. take a look at the flames, huge, shooting from the roof there. firefighters battled that blaze from all angles, for just about an hour before placing the flames under control. no one was hurt, no word on what sparked that fire. >> in other news today, rescue efforts continue in mexico this weekend, even as residents were rattled once again, by a magnitude 6.1 after shock on saturday. right now, the death toll from last week's earthquake stands at 307. manuel with the latest from mexico city. >> a series of after shocks south of mexico city, sent people once again running into the streets. and search and rescue crews

evacuating already unsteady mounds of debris. closer to the epi-center the 6.1 magnitude quake brought down this bridge near waha. once the grounds stopped shaking the crews returned to what's left of six story office building in mexico city where more than 40 people were listed as missing. maria has been camped out here since wednesday, her cousin it , an account and the, was working on the fourth floor of this building when the quake hit. >> the window that they found people on the fourth floor, i think that they found people in groups. and that some of them, they showed they are like -- >> there are signs of life? >> uh-huh. so we are like hoping him to be one of those. >> part of the city from trying to reopen for business, leading to tension, as an officer tried to reopen a busy boulevard, searches and family members who wanted silence

protested. still hoping to hear sounds from possible survivors under the rubble. the number of people rescued from collapsed buildings like this one has reached nearly 70 but as the days go on, the hope of finding other diminished. still, crews continue to search. manuel, cbs news, mexico city. >> this morning puerto rican leaders are warning people about a dam at risk of collapsing there. the damn is in the northeastern part of the islands. a spillway now easing pressure on the damn, though, but at one point about 70,000 people who live downstream had been ordered to leave. the damn became compromised after flooding from hurricane maria. the storm is being blamed for at least ten death in puerto rico. people there are still without power. >> meantime, the tough talk between president trump and north korean leaders continues overnight president trump called kim jong un little rocket man on twitter. yesterday us air force bombers escorted by fighter jet flew

hit-and-run in north philadelphia. officers say pan was run down in the intersection of broad and glenwood avenue around 1:00 yesterday morning. he was returned to the hospital where he later died. that investigation is still ongoing. >> in other news today, firefighters respond to hazmat situation in wilmington. officials say 18 workers at the dupont experimental station were possibly exposed to an unknown substance. "eyewitness news," on powder mill road yesterday morning. the workers went through a de- contamination process, were taken to the hospital. officials say none of them was seriously injured. well, it has now been four weeks since hurricane harvey made landfall in the houston area as category four storm, quickly became the largest flooding event in north american history, and recovery has been slow. courtney spoke with local residents there, who are find ing it hard to stay strong report these are our kitchen cabinets. michelle has texas size problem sitting on her front

lawn. >> it is not acceptable. i mean, we are trying to move forward as a city. and this to me causes a health hazard. >> one month after harvey hit, and three weeks after she cleared out her home, she still is looking at mountains every memories, including horse flies, and constant smell of mildew. >> harris county judge is helping lead recovery efforts in southeast texas. >> even if 90% of it is pick up at some point, if you're still in that 10%, you're not happy. and i understand that. >> household debris ends up in larger piles like this one, houston officials say instruction have only removed about 5% of harvey's wreckage n southeast texas, close to 800,000 people have applied for fema assistance, the agency has already paid out more than $570 million to individuals, the insurance council expect there are about quarter million flooded cars and trucks insurance companies have already taken care of a billion dollars worth in claims and that number is

expected to triple, on top of that, at least 2,000 people remain in shelters. and some schools have not yet started. local officials say they're looking at revamping old floodplain maps to make sure this doesn't happen again. >> we have to make sure people no longer build in areas that are subject to flooding. >> for michelle frankford, she can't even think about the future until the past is carted away. and that could take six months courtney, for cbs news, tuesday ton. >> it has been such an act of hurricane -- active hurricane season. fortunately, we're relatively quiet this weekend? >> at least here. maria is just off the coast of the southeast united state. we will talk all about that at the fifth update. looks like we'll deal with indirect impacts, which is great news. meanwhile, talking hot weather here. a live look at center city. feeling like summer out there even though fall has just started. i mean, i think it the weather little confused, we have more

warm weather that's going to be headed our way, and increase in humidity as well. we will show you now our live neighborhood network. looking at boardwalk plaza in rehoboth, likely will be filled with people, walking the board throughout the day today, filled with people on the sand, as well, because it is going to be gorgeous weather. even though it will look beautiful, you have to keep in mind, we will have that rip countries being, so i have to say on day like today, beach-goers, bee aware, high rip countries being, looks gorgeous, ocean can be very dangerous, 71 degrees in philadelphia. we're in the 60s down the shore. it is 62 degrees in wildwood. right around 64, atlantic city 68 degrees in trenton. we're in the low 60s allentown , mid 60s mount pocono. sixty-three in reading. also, 63 degrees currently in lancaster. as i mention, we will see rise in humidity. now, throughout the day today, humidity will be in check. levels really not all that bad but really notice that steam factor on the increase as we start out the work week, then by tuesday, it is going to be

feeling very uncomfortable, and oppressive at times, going to have that combination every both heat and humidity, so not going to be cooling down until the latter part of the week next weekends. next weekend will be completely opposite from what we're dealing with this weekend. bigger picture on storm scan3, notice, hardly anything going on in the eastern portion of the united states. we have system located out to the west, moving through the dakotas, down to texas, also maria off shore, the southeast coast of the united states, but high pressure in control here at home. we have the jet stream pushed well up to the north. that's allowing the temperatures to really star. today forecasting high of 09 degrees, and we will talk little bit more about maria. it has been downgrade today category two storm. winds of 110 miles per hour. but guys, that's still very strong hurricane. it is moving to the north at around 9 miles per hour. the good news is model

consistency is looking rather nice specially whether it comes to this turn out to sea. as we head into the wednesday- thursday time frame. now, maria will still be a category one storm located uncomfortably close to the coast of north carolina with wind of 85 miles per hour, but then cold front will swing it on out to sea, that's going to lever us here at home with out err rand bands or two, then also have the risk for the rip currents, and rough surround every, and you know, what we also have that risk along the coastline today. along the jersey shore, down into our delaware beaches. as i mentioned, beach-goers be aware, even though the weather is looking really really nice down the shore today. we will see sunny skies, on the sands, temperatures low mid 80s, winds out of the northeast at around five to ten. water temperature, 73 degrees. here's your forecast for today sunny, and unseasonably hot, significantly above average for this time of year. high temperature right around 90. tonight, overnight low of 70.

they will be doing so outside here at 11 ahead of the game at 1:00. but again, jan, fans really starting to line up here at the linc ahead of the game. liver at the linc this morning , anita oh, cbs 3, " eyewitness news." >> all right, and eat, a thank you very much. well, in other news this morning, one person suffered minor injuries, when a three alarm fire ripped through a business in bucks county. this was the smokey scene on william lee drive, in tullytown yesterday morning. authority arrived to find that building engulfed in flames. the fire burned for about three hours before firefighters there were able to bring it under control. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. >> authorities in delaware have determined that a fire that destroyed the new castle county home was intentionally set. michael williams, of wilmington, has been arrested and charged with arson in connection to that fire. the flames broke out at a home on saratoga drive in bear early yesterday morning, by the time the fire was put out, it had caused roughly $200,000

in damage. in addition to arson, williams now charged with wreckless endangerment, and wearing a disguise during the commission after felony. >> recovery efforts continue in mexico today, after last week's powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake. a 6.1 magnitude after shock shook the country yesterday, rescuers are to flee from debris there. where they were doing search and rescue operations. so far, the earthquake is being blamed for at least 300 deaths, mexico, more than half of those deaths were in mexico city. arson -- parts of the city are returning to return to normal as businesses reopen. it. >> in puerto rico, officials worrying about a dam at risk of collapsing, in wahata north eastern part of the island. a spillway is easing pressure on the damn there. it became compromised after flooding from hurricane maria. at one point about 70,000 people downstream of that damn were ordered to leave. >> in the aftermath of

hurricane maria, today's puerto rican day parade in philadelphia is expected to take a different mood this year. this is video from last year's parade along the ben franklin parkway. organizers say, puerto rican culture will still be celebrated, but monetary donations will also be collected to help those displaced by the hurricane. the 53rd annual puerto rican day parade starts around 10:00 s at 12:30 p.m. this afternoon. local heroes put on good show for a good cause yesterday. thousands turned out for the annual hero thrill show at the wells fargo center, way to show the family members of local emergency responders who made the ultimate sacrifice, that they have support, and their loved ones will never be forgotten. alicia newest has the story. >> the 63rd annual hero thrill show, philadelphia's finest performing. putting on a show that shows those though have fall ren not forgot glenn incredible

tradition, for very worthy cause. everybody pitches in, makes it happen it, really does mean a lot to our members to know that this great city, city of brotherly love, sisterly affection has their back, 24/7 >> emergency responders with the city give all they have at this show every year. because it raises money that pays for college tuition, for the children of philadelphia's firefighters, and police officers, killed in the line of duty. >> i don't even have the words , but i just want to tell you that we love you. >> every year at the show, there is this moment, recognizing those families whose loved ones sacrificed it all. >> see all of the love from everyone, and it really, you know, a good feeling, that we have these people to rely on. >> and none of this would be possible without the thousands who attends. >> my father used to bring me down whether it was at jfk. so just kind of caring on the tradition my sons. we support them as much as we can, whenever we can. they have a tough job, thankless job. >> your presence here today is a testament to the fact that we don't forget our fallen heroes, their families.

proceeds will go to benefit the new york city fire department counselling unit, as well. well, this morning, cyclists continue to ride for a good cause. the 38th annual bike ms ride continues today. thousands of cyclists began yesterday. they're riding various, varying distances, fun raising minimum for this ride, all proceeds benefit the national multiple sclerosis society. >> it can affect the way you walk. it can affect the way you see it. can even affect the way you think and you just don't know what's going to happen next. none of the current treatments reverse the damage that's already been done, none of them actually stop the disease that's what we want to do. we want to stop ms in it tracks. >> this weekend in total. riders raised about a million dollars for the national ms society. >> and it was a night full of music all in the name of charity. the jenkintown community put on show to raise money for hurricane relief.
