opens fire at a church, killing one and injuring several others. good morning from the studio in new york. defiant and angry. across the league about 200 sat, knelt, or raised their fist and most players locked arms yesterday in an unusual display of unity. some coaches and even some owners took part. hena doba is here with the details. good morning, hena. >> good morning, anne-marie. president trump called on owners to fire players who didn't stand for the "national anthem." players decided to make a statement against a growing

movement against police brutali brutali brutality. players protested in some form. players sat, they kneeled, teammates locked arms. in pittsburgh the entire team except for one decided to stay off the field during the "national anthem." villanueva, a west point graduate who served three tours stood outside with his hand on his heart. >> many of them were not going to accept the words of the president. >> those worded started friday and continued throughout the weekend. president trump said they should fire the s.o.b.s who would not stand for the "national anthem." >> since the president's original league, many have stood

maxwell put his hand over his heart. teammates stood in line next to him. and president trump is replacing his travel ban with new restrictions. the new rules include chad, sudan, libya, syria, and yemen. the restrictions range from an indefinite ban on visas to more targeted restrictions. it was announced after a ban on six majority nations was set to spire. several republicans updated their latest last dich effort. two, john mccain and rand paul say they oppose the bill. several others say they don't think they'll support the measure. it adds $14 billion for states. republicans have until september 30th when their ability to pass

the measure with a simple majority expires. and ahead on "cbs this morning," oprah winfrey looks at the political divide impacting americans in the media, culturing and particularly in politics. in a portion you did not see on "60 minutes" last night, she talked to people in michigan which played a key role in the election. a mavericked gunman opened fire yesterday at burnette chapel church of christ. witnesses say a church usher who stopped him was a hero. one was kill and six others were wounded. the gunman said nothing as he fired. >> the guy came in and started shooting. i don't understand it. >> police say emanuel sampsson will be charged with one count of murder. he remains in police custody

without bail. no motive was immediately determined. the death toll from that powerful earthquake in mexico now stands at 320, including over 180 mixco city. the region was rocked by a powerful 6.1 magnitude aftershock saturday. rescue operations continue, but many searches have been shut down. the last time anyone was found alive was wednesday. heavy equipment has been shifted to begin moving debris and thousands are homeless. this morning hurricane maria is weaken eing ave the coast of the united states. it's expected to weaken, but it remain as large storm with tropical-force winds, 230 miles from its center. this morning an mandatory evacuation has been ordered.

one says the storm set the island back decades. the damage to infrastructure and communications is extensive and at least ten people were killed on the island. david begnaud has more. >> reporter: from the air we were tielk get a view of the widespread area. homes in san juan are still surrounded by water. the damage is catastrophic here. in catano, the flooding is as widespread today as it was four days ago when we found chest-deep water. by tractor we made it to roy ka. the water is gushing toward communities. where you see the fresh dirt,

that's where the failure of the spillway happened. the concern now is if there's a vulnerability there, there's the dam up the road and the entire dam could fail. there are long lines of people waiting to buy fuel. officials say more than 80% of the island's cell phone towers have been damaged. in a large hit region we found hundreds of people standing below a cell phone tower trying to get a signal. >> i want to talk to my family. i'm okay. but my mother is in the hospital. >> reporter: for those who could get one bar, it was just enough. >> reporter: the communication system is so bad around here we're told some people need to be rescued today, five days after the storm made landfall bug they still have no way of calling for help. here at the airport they have

anniversary of a watershed moment in the civil rights movement. in 1957 the u.s. army escorted nine african-american students known as the little rock nine past an angry white mob in what was an all-white high school. anniversary events took place the last few days including an unveiling of a sculpture at a school on friday. jared kushner is accused in an e-mail controversy. those are some of the morning headlines on the morning newsstand. kushner's lawyer says between january and august kushner received or responded to few ter than 100 e-mails from white house colleagues on his private account. e-mails appear to contain the classified information. the st. louis post dispatch

"the new york times" says the pentagon is testing lasers annetts to combat the use of drones by isis. there has been an increase of deadly attacks by isis drones since last fall. the pent gone has launched a $700 million program calling on them to come up with new ways to combat the drone. and an indiana university student was rescued after surviving three days trapped in a cage. the 19-year-old freshman was on a spelunking trip. they didn't know he was still in the cave when they padlocked the entrance. he was rescued after club members ri members realized he was missing. >> still to come, restocking your fridge may soon be a snap. walmart is testing services that stocks groceries to your refrigerator when you're not home.

our top stories this morn g morning, president trump's profane criticism of nfl players who kneel during the "national anthem" spur a leaguewide protest yesterday. about 200 players sat, knelt, or raised their fists. most locked arms with their teammates with some coaches an owners joining in. the president says the opposition has nothing to do with race. the president announced a new travel ban. travellers from eight countries will face restrictions coming into the u.s. some face full bans. for others like venezuela there are more tailored restrictions. the new rules go into effect next month. and senate republicans
