civil rights act vist and baseball player was shot and killed outside of his philadelphia home. he was 32. catto had been working to inform the community about their voting rights. >> the more i heard about him i never heard his name until i was over 40 years of age. which this is a person and people like him to contributed to philadelphia and our country should be in our history books and they're not. >> reporter: in learning the story years ago, the mayor embarked on a project to encourage others to do the same. the statue of his likeness was prepared over the weekend. >> this is the first time on public land where an african-american is memorialized for the public to see. >> i would say. >> i think it's amazing and i think there needs to be more. >> reporter: consider both the martin luther king junior and jackie robinson at his time, he was buried and moved after his

previously neglected grave was unearthed. >> i think all of our kids need to know how every group in america contributed to making our country a great place. >> his grave reads the forgotten hero. and forgotten he is no more. alexandria hoff, cbs3 eyewitness news. >> a second day of protest on the grid iron following comments made by president trump. tonight dallas cowboys owner jery jones locked arms with his players and stood as the star spankled banner played. the arizona cardinals stood with their arms linked. the president said players who kneel should be fired. on twitter he's called for fans to boycott the nfl. yesterday about 200 players, including the philadelphia eagles, locked arms or took a knee in a show of solidarity.

the eagles are giving people a lot to talk about after jake elliot kicked a 61-yard field goal to beat the giants. it was a yu -- >> the north korean government says a tweet by president trump over the weekend was a quote declaration of war. and na north korea has the right to retaliate by shooting down u.s. planes. tonight the white house says we have not declared war. greg argos is in our satellite center with the back and forth and the escalating tensions. >> reporter: fortunately right now this is just a war of words. no action has been taken by either government. tonight experts say the lack of direct communication between the united states and north korea can only lead to more confusion and even greater tension. for a president known for his twitter account, it's no surprise the north koreans are

keeping a close eye on what president trump says with those 140 characters. >> they certainly read his tweets very cautiously. >> reporter: north korea defense minister tells reporters in new york mr. trump's tweet on a saturday stating north korea's regime won't be around much longer is a declaration of war. >> my main concern now is not the claim of a declaration of war. because that's happened many, many times. >> reporter: but benjamin katz a scholar who studies north korean policy says what is troubling is the specific threat officials made against our country. >> it reserves the right to shoot down u.s. bomber planes. it puts an immense pressure on north korea the next time the u.s. conducts flights like this. >> reporter: north korea releasing a propaganda video showing computer generated

missiles. it warns american forces will be quote headed to the grave if the u.s. attacks the north. >> i think the north korean government apparatus thought it knew about the has gone right out the window. >> reporter: with tensions high between the two nations, the question is what could happen next. >> that he is a very, very hard question. i would say anyone that gives you an answer to that is lying or crazy. >> without direct lines of communication we can expect these verbal threats to continue. as for any actual military, an indication of that would be the movement of u.s. troops toward the korean peninsula. and fortunately we have not yet seen that. >> a proposal to repeal and replace obama care is all be dead in the water. susan collins of maine announced she will not back the bill.

protesters delayed the start of the only hearing on the the gop had until saturday to rally support for a 51 vote majority. >> philadelphia police are investigating vandalism in manyunk that threatens president trump. the message was spray painted on the wall of the 100 block of mallory street. the homeland security unit on the philadelphia police department is investigating. the secret service may also get involved. neighbors are petitioning the city to paint a mural in its place. >> the suspects on video punching a disabled man in the face in west chester has pleaded guilty in his assault case. he said he was guilty of assaulting michael ryan and fleeing the area to avoid

capture. his plea comes just before trial was set to begin. he told eyewitness news he's getting on with his life. >> if it wasn't for that fact. i was appalled and thank god he wasn't terribly hurt. >> reporter: sentencing is expected later this fall. he faces between 2 and 4 years behind bars. a $1,000 reward is being afford for information about the whereabouts of this the magnitude 1.7 struck southwest of morristown.

there were no reports of damage. federal agencies are wrapping up their response as the trump administration tries to blunt criticism that its response to hurricane maria has been lack luster. tonight the majority of puerto rico's citizens are still without power. this is five days after landfall. getting power restored to everyone will likely take months. san juan's airport looks more like a shelter with people there sleeping on south cases. resources are running out and people are growing desperate. >> the food is not enough. so everybody is fighting to get at whatever is available. >> there are long lines to buy gasoline and some are standing by cell towers searching for a signal so they can let their loved ones know they're okay. some in our area who are having trouble communicating with family and friends in puerto rico are taking action. they're gathering desperately needed supplies to send to the island. this woman just moved to center city from san juan.

a week when some goods had to be thrown away. >> reporter: add to that a few hundred dollars more each month for an exterminator. >> that was becoming cost prohibitive to have results that weren't working. >> as soon as gary reported for guard duty. >> the results were day and night. there were no damaged goods, there was nothing that was being trampled on. there was no mouse droppings at all whatsoever. >> and cats like gary aren't just solving a major problem in warehouses around the city, they're actually saving their own lives. >> reporter: philadelphia animal care and control houses hundreds of found or surrendered cats. >> you're doing good. yeah. >> reporter: most are cute, cuddly, and most importantly adoptable. but the few cats kept in this back corner are not. for one reason or another, they tend to dislike humans or just can't seem to figure out how to live in a home. and since this facility has limited room and is required to take in all animals. >> if we cannot adopt out these

cats, our only other option before this program was euthanasia. >> the program gives them a second chance at life by putting the cats to work at first they were adopted out to owners of farms and barns. recently animal control has had some success with placement at inner city factories. >> the working cat program has had a very positive effect on our statistics in terms of euthanasia for cats. >> reporter: and although most remain a little more independent, some like gary become social in their new setting. this once frightened feline lets people pet and hold him. one of the many reasons gary's boss highly recommends hiring a working cat. >> don't hesitate. do it. >> reporter: they do make purfect employees. >> i love that that's great.

fantastic. kate's got a forecast anything happening? >> eventually fantastic. not just yet. >> it's still hot and still humid and although next two days are not quite as hot as today was, the humidity will still be high as we head into wednesday and then some big changes by the end of the weekend. the weekend i think you're going to like. let's take a peek at what's going on right now. a beautiful shot of the city all lit up tonight. center city from our camera there at the parkway central library. everything is lit up and it's very comfortable out there. temperatures in the low 70s still. it's warm but not as hot as it was today. the sun goes down earlier now that means it cools off a little more quickly. take a peek at the time lapse today, not the best beach day but still the beach got packed if you're down the shore or at the delaware beaches this week, if you like to go in september when the crowds are a little bit less this week was perfect, whether weather a lot warmer

than it usually is. although the ocean water still a little bit rough. we'll talk more about that in just a moment. as far as storm scan 3 is concerned tonight, no problems out there just a few clouds but of course we've got to talk about maria. maria is still sitting and spinning off the coast so how do you solve a problem like? with a cold front in this case. temperatures right now 72 in philadelphia, 74 in allentown, 69 in mill vil and at the atlantic city airport let's zoom back to the west where you can see the blue colors and the dark green, those are temperatures behind a very strong cold front that's slicing into the midwest here now, still very warm in chicago and st. louis. but this is going to take the eastern half of the country in chunks over the next few days and by the end of the week we're going to feel the cooler air as well. it's also going to help sweep maria out to sea. today we got to 91. the normal just 75. we were one degree shy of that record of 92 setback in 1970. as that front sweeps in it's going to usher in some cool,

canadian air later this week, and that jet stream, the strong winds behind the front are going to carry maria further out to see. time thg out, as you can see we head into tomorrow, a few clouds but a mostly sunny afternoon. heads to the north, looks pretty ominous but here's our saving grace. that front starts to come through. got a couple of showers with it and watch what happens. it picks up maria and steers it right out to sea clearing us out on thursday. the humidity drops on thursday and the temperature really drops by friday. maria weakening to a tropical storm, take that sharp right turn. that thing is out of here quickly steered by the front. winds still 10-20 miles per hour seas in new jersey 4-6 feet down in delaware 8-12 feet. dangerous rip currents and beach erosion continuing with that system lurking offshore. indirect impacts but no direct impacts expected for us here in the city at least t as far as

your tuesday is concerned, morning fog, warm and humid 86. wednesday is warm and humid as well. more clouds than sunshine. thursday still warm but it's going to feel completely different. we're going to cut the humidity in half. over the weekend we're going to struggle to hit 70. it's going to be some great fall weather. >> it's going to feel different. >> don's up next with sports. >> a lot to get to tonight. the phillies are coming down the home stretch. plus the eagles loose one of their best players of the season.
