here in new york. i'm anne-marie greene. this morning the latest republican effort to repeal the affordable care act is dead. senator susan collins became the third republican to vote against the legislation, a measure she describes as deeply flawed. we're here in new york. >> with all democrats against the measure, three republicans voting against the bill will sink it. this after a day of protests on capitol hill where 180 people, many in wheelchairs were arrested speaking out against the bill. >> collins became the last senator to say she will not support the health care repeal bill. >> the bill clearly opened the door to weakening the protections for people with preexisting conditions. >> one of the other republican

holdouts got a unique message of thanks to his constituents. a plane flew over the monday night football game in arizona, a banner that said mccain, thanks for protecting our care. >> we would repeal and replace. >> that is part of a 6 and a half minute video president trump posted on twitter. above it he wrote a few of the clips of mccain repealing and replacing obamacare. complete turn of years of talk. mccain is among those concerned about the bills cuts to medicaid. lindsey graham said during a health care debate last night the medicaid left unchecked is financially unsustainable. >> if we don't turn this around now we're going to leave a country that's completely and utterly bankrupt. >> the new health care proposal

would cut 1 trillion dwl$1 tril medicaid. >> the bill would cause millions of people to lose their medicaid coverage though it would save $133 billion over 10 years. republicans have until saturday to rally the votes they need for the bill to pass. >> thank you so much. now to the showdown between president trump and the national football league over protests during the national anthem. before last night's game between arizona and dallas another show of unity. >> dallas cowboys owner jerry jones locked arms with his play ers and kneeled before the national anthem started, then stood as the star spangled banner played. the cardinals also stood, their arms linkedin unity. it was an encore to sunday's

games when about 200 players and coaches and several owners took a knee, sat or locked arms including tom brady. the super bowl mvp and friend of president trump told a radio show -- >> i certainly disagree with what he said and thought it was just divisive. >> the protests followed the president's comments friday in alabama. >> wouldn't you love one of these nfl owners when somebody disrespects our owners to say get that [ bleep ] off the field. >> he insisted his comments weren't about race but about respect for the flag. former san francisco 49ers quarterback colin kaepernick started it last year protesting

police inequality. >> other players and sports leagues waited into the controversy including lebron jams who criticized the president. monday night on the floor of the u.s. house, texas representative sheila jackson took a knee to show her support. >> i kneel in honor of the first amendment. >> we are learning that some of president trump's top aides used private e-mails for official white house business. cbs news has confirmed that the president's son-in-law jared kushner, steve bannon sent private e-mail account. the use of private e-mails to discuss government matters was a prominent topic in last year's campaign. then president trump repeatedly attacked hillary clinton for using a private, mail server

while she was secretary of state. stone is scheduled to testify today before the house intelligence committee. stone is part of the investigation because of messages he exchanged with the hacker who is taking credit for breaking into the democratic committee's e-mail servers. and the white house says the united states has not declared war on north korea. the administration was responding to comments by north korea's top diplomat. north korean leader kim jong-un not being around any longer is a declaration of war. on puerto rico now, it is six days since hurricane maria hit and authorities are still trying to determine the extent of the damage. president trump tweeted the island is in deep trouble. here's the latest.

nearly all of the island remains without electricity. there are shortages of food, water and fuel. airports are slowly opening to commercial traffic. david begnaud has our report. >> where is the army? we're fed up. this is going to be a riot here. >> more than 1,000 people slept in the airport overnight waiting for a flight. they had nowhere else to go. there were no cots, no water, children were bathed in sweat as their parents tried to keep them calm. >> my mom needs dialysis. >> there's a desperate situation in san juan airport right now. >> he says he's pleaded for more money from fema. so far $1 billion has been earmarked for recovery but it's not earmarked here. >> the quantity needs to be consistent with the aid that would be provided anywhere else in the united states. >> puerto rico has been in the

dark since hurricane maria slammed the island last week. 85% of the power lines have been knocked out and it may be months before it's repaired. things will get even worse unless there is fuel to supply generators. after a press conference president trump's advisor defended the government's response. >> president trump remains completely committed to the response and recovery efforts and will remain so until puerto rico is fully recovered. >> military helicopters are now being used to distribute relief aide to cities and towns across the island. once they get the aide there it's local government leaders who decide to distribute that aid to people who have needed it for five days. investor service says the powerful earthquake that struck mexico has the potential to be

one of that country's most catastrophes. the estimate that the -- the disaster rather could knock off up to 3% of the domestic product. the so-called canyon fire east of los angeles started yesterday afternoon exploding in the area foothills. at least 2,000 acres have been destroyed and one home damaged. intense flames kept down canyon walls toward several neighborhoods. the flames forced officials to close several roads. coming up on the morning news now, sentencing for anthony weiner. the former congressman gets emotional when he hears his punishment for sexting a minor. and this is the cbs morning

some scary moments for passengers as smoke filled the cabin yesterday. the flight which arrived from las va gags wegas was taxiing t gate. there were no injuries. the airline called it a mechanical issue. a former congressman was sentenced for sexting. an illegal showdown over the old travel ban is put off. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. the new york times said the supreme court cancelled a hearing on president trump's previous travel ban. the trump administration proposed a new broader travel ban. the ban poses restrictions on

visitors from eight nations including venezuela and north korea. the ban is set to start on october 18th. the new york daily news reports anthony weiner was sentenced to 21 months in prison for sexting a 15-year-old girl. weiner cried into his hands as the federal judge handed down the sentence yesterday. he was also fined $10,000 rs and ordered to enroll in a sex offender treatment program. the washington post says violent crimes and murders increased in 2016 for a second consecutive year. it remains at historically low levels for much of the country but a spike in murders contributed to the overall increase. the fbi says it's the first time violent crime rose in more than a decade. ivanka trump will visit detroit today to promote stem education. she will be joined by r and
