tonight, we're learning more about his new role, and the search for a new skipper. good evening, i'm ukee washington. i'm jessica dean. our leslie van arsdal joins us live from citizens bank park. leslie, is what the feeling down there tonight. >> reporter: very interesting because earlier this week pete mackanin sat down with the media and did make it clear he was unsure about his feud tour with the team next season. just yesterday he sat down with gm matt klentak and said come sunday that will be his last game as a phillies manager. they did ask him to stay on as a special advisor, which he will be doing, the team gave him a one year extension back in may, the timing is surprising here, the phillies 35-35 in the last 70 games, they have a chance to finish over 500 after the all-star break. they have been playing much better baseball these last two months, young position players , bull pen pieces, finding success but matt did feel the time for change was right now. so what is he exactly looking for in a new manager of the

2018 phillies. >> a lot of the characteristics in our next manager i hope, they will possess that pete does as well , but, you know, again, i think it is about, you know, finding a connection with the team and with the players and leading us into the future. >> i have always felt if you have people who you consider your best major, your best baseball people at major league level why wouldn't you want to keep them around in the system. i am happy about that. >> reporter: i really like pete mackanin and glad he will be staying with the team. coming up later we will hear from the players and what they think about the change at the top. that is very latest reporting live from citizens bank park, leslie van arsdal for "eyewitness sports". puerto rico tonight long lines continue as many displays by hurricane maria try to get necessities like food and water. communication there is also, still a real challenge, with so much of the country's infrastructure destroyed.

"eyewitness news" report's leash a nieves is live south of san juan, alycia? >> reporter: jessica, we are half an hour southwest of san juan here in caguas and we wanted to head this way because i had people tell me this was hard hit. on our journey here we were hoping to find someone who maybe has family in the greater philadelphia area that they have not been able to speak to. sure enough, the first person that we spoke to the minute we got out of the car he has family in berks county, friend s there and he wanted to get a message to them. people in puerto rico say further you get from san juan the war devastation and desperation is. we went just 30 minutes southwest of the island capitol to caguas and realized this were right. from the drive and when we put our drone three in the air it was clear damage is every where you look in this city and desperation is truly growing. >> we ain't get nothing help around here, nothing.

>> reporter: he is from the reading area, he has lived there most of his life so most of puerto rico seven years ago he went through several hurricanes here but nothing like wrath of maria. >> that was scary. >> reporter: the stove blue out of the house. >> yes, out of the house. >> reporter: his house was destroyed but right now he is struggling to get supplies. >> we have to get to the gas station to get some gasoline. >> reporter: he waits so long for gas up to eight hours he doesn't have time or enjoy wait for water but still his biggest worry right now is getting a simple message out to his family and friendness berks county. >> it is okay, but we're still living. >> reporter: last word he said right there, really struck me. i asked him what that one message you want to get tour family. it is that he is still living. it is 10 days since maria hit this area and they have not been able to get in contact with his family in berks county.

he lives here in the mountains in caguas. >> speaking of family, how close is caguas to your family and have you been able to get in contact with them. >> reporter: migrate grandmother is 15 to 20 minutes from here. it is no the that far. because we spent so much time here in caguas and talking to people here and we have a curfew we have to get back to san juan, i'm not able to get down there i was able to find a cousin able to get some supplies, that i picked up in san juan because there were some stores out there, i have a disabled uncle and he needed some ensure, diapers, water, we got that stuff, and my cousin took it down to them. hopefully tomorrow we can get down there and give them a hug and make sure they are okay. my only concern though is that there is a flash watch, for the whole island of puerto rico. we will get rain throughout this weekend. the last thing that we need right now, we will get, so

hopefully there is not too much rainy and i can get down there to see my family too. >> a leash, please keep us posted, thanks so much. we will get back to you later tonight here on "eyewitness news", be safe, talk to you soon. we learned today that the state of new jersey is sending 1100 emergency work tours puerto rico and among those headed south members of the state police and new jersey national guard. >> state police are launching nj pride operation, puerto rico integratedded deployment effort. that will involve a deployment of 600 police, troopers, fire fighters and medical personnel , over a period of six weeks national guard is mobilizing another 500 responders. an additional 2500 national guard troops will be on stand by ready to go if requested by puerto rico's government. stay with "eyewitness news" for updates on the crisis in puerto rico, our alycia nieves will continue her reports from the island

here on "eyewitness news" and always get the latest on cbs philly.com. fire fighters continue to battle a serious blaze at an ocean county condo minimum building. chopper three over that scene in lakewood, new jersey flames tore through the roof on condo building on sophie lane an over 55 community there, and authorities say one resident was taken to the hospital and two officers are being treated for smoke inhalation. no word on the cause. a judge in camden county has sentenced david creato junior to 10 years in prison for causing death of his toddler son. creato pleaded guilty to manslaughter as part of the plea deal in the death of three-year old brandon creato. earlier this year prosecutors were inn able to get a guilty verdict on murder charges so trial ended in a hung jury. despite the plea, family members and his attorney say creato did not kill his son. >> which would you rather spend 10 years in jail or 30. >> it is very specific to what he plead toed recollect restly causing his son's death.

he absolutely believe that this was a plea that was just too good to turn down. >> ten year sentence creato received could be reduced to eight and a half if he makes parole and due to time served the 24 year-old could be released by the time he is 30. the cause of brendon's death was never determined. authorities revealed that the disturbing new evidence in the murder of the pharmaceutical execute any of bucks county. racey text messages led to the arrest of the suspect. "eyewitness news" reporter anita oh has details and spoke to stunned neighbors. >> you will not just come up here and create a crime like that and getaway witt, not in this area. >> reporter: nearly few months after murder of the six year michael mcnew inside his river road home in august 6th bucks county investigators announced they have made an arrest. >> not always immediate. >> reporter: jennifer lynn morrissey a met or cycle mechanic who lived with the victim since january 2015, has been arraigned on multiple charges including criminal homicide, burglary and

tampering with or fabricating evidence. she's accused of shooting mc new in the face after an argument. >> safe to assume that there was a, a relationship between mr. mcnew and miss morrissey, and it is not disputed that miss morrissey did have a boyfriend other than mr. mcnew >> reporter: that boyfriend has not been charged but morrissey initially tried to cast suspicion on him. probable cause affidavit shows mcknew told morrissey he had boxed up perfect belongings and she was no longer welcomed in the home. district attorney matthew wine taubb recounted text message threats morrissey wrote in response. >> get the gun ready because i'm coming. i already told you that i will be there tonight. guess you will just to have shoot me. you have a choice, touch my stuff, or i cut your throat. >> reporter: investigators add morrissey went to great lengths to cover up her allege crime including returning to the home to stage a robbery scene. she told detective she had not visited the home since july 31st so cell information coordinates and information

from four confidential inform apartments proved otherwise according to the affidavit. mcnew's children sent "eyewitness news" this statement that said we are relieved to hear an arrest has been made and we are hopeful that justice will be served on our father's behalf. morrissey is being held in the bucks county jail, without bail. reporting from bucks county i'm anita oh for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". woman is facing charges in the stabbing death of the man in center city, it happened in the newly renovated shakespeare park at 19th and vine this morning. right across the street from the free library. investigators say both suspect and victim are home less, authorities say stabbing happened after some type of an argument. >> he was walking away, she ran back to him and stabbed him twice in the neck. by the end of the day she will be charged with murder. >> investigators say it is not clear what the suspect and victim were arguing about, police have not released their names. real estate agent is facing murder charges in the shooting death of the man in fishtown, wednesday morning.

investigators say jeanette way field shot and killed a three three-year old man outside her montgomery avenue apartment. rye now there is no word what led to the shooting. the new jersey attorney jennies announcing indictment of four men connected to a record setting seizure of the dangerous drug fentanyl. officials say these four men face charges related to the june drug seizure and they include jesus, penad of philadelphia, martinez and daniel vasquez, both of air zone and omar rodriguez of willingboro. 45 kilograms were seized in north jersey, five kiehl owes were seized in willingboro. fentanyl is considered one of the most deadly opioids 50 times more potent then heroin. amount seized in this case is equal to 18 million lethal doses. still to come on "eyewitness news", it is fail 's iconic train station but could 30th street station soon be called something else? we will show you who wants the change, and what they want to call it.

them. community leaders say it is time for amtrak to comply. >> they are dear manning amtrak abide by federal law and rename 30th street station after late pennsylvania congressman bill gray. senator casey, mayor kenney and elected officials held a press conference. congress passed the law to honor gray in 2014 but have yet to change the name. gray served philadelphia's second district and rose to be the first black majority whip in congress. state representative curtis thomas says money should not be an issue. >> we have said, that the family, friends, and legacies of doctor gray is willing to step up to the plate and help deal with the cost associated with renaming the train station. >> in a statement amtrak says it looks forward to working with the family on how to honor and fund the recognition , of congressman gray's service. city leaders broke ground on a new discovery center in philadelphia's fairmount park.

be in the 4:00 o'clock hour that the sun goes down. we have to enjoy these long evenings while we have them. great night to be out and about in center city. temperatures will drop once the sun goes down but as far as right now is concerned it is still comfortable. seventy at our studios. zero seven at the airport as well. cool 59 in mount pocono. zero seven in wilmington delaware. sixty-nine in dover. sixty-nine in atlantic city. ocean water temperature at 73. tonight begins yom kippur as well, wonderful night for start of that holiday and goes through night fall tomorrow, of course. 68 degrees. mainly clear, pleasant at sundown. storm scan three shows another area of low pressure right about here producing a cold front. that is moving through western , stay central pennsylvania. it has showers. back to the west you can see sprinkles around western flange of that low right now over lower peninsula of michigan. so this front looks robust right now, working on the heating of the day. once sun goes down it will lose steam here and fall apart

it's been on the decline with the closing of the refineries and there's no jobs in the community. if there's no jobs, there's no education, there's no food on the table. what's important is the children. steve sweeney... he fought for 'em. this is where he's from. steve sweeney's been here since the beginning. steve spearheaded the whole project and really brought it to fruition.
