las vegas. gunfire near the mandolay bay ho tell on the las vegas strip. police say there are numerous victims and at least two down. two dead, 24 injured, 12 of them critically. john blackstone is in las vegas. john, what's the latest? >> reporter: we're here on the strip down from the mandalay bay. reports here, people say it appears shooters, multiple shooters were directing fire from balconies, perhaps, down on the festival. excuse me. there's lots of people around here. as you can see, lots of people cleared out of the hotels. we drove down part of it that was open. it was abandoned. all you can see are police cars, fire engines, emergency vehicles moving down the streets.

there's been reports of multiple gunfire, clearly multiple gunfire. we don't know whether there are multiple suspects. no full report yet from police, from authorities here on exactly what they know what's happened. still quite chaotic in this area. >> yeah. john, we're looking at video now. it looks extremely chaotic. john blackstone in las vegas. thank you so much, john. well, the shots rang out during a jason aldean concert. one woman was there with her husband. they took cover inside a vendor booth with other concertgoers and a police officer. she spoke to us from las vegas by phone. >> he was yetting turn the lights off, turn the lights off. we were sitting ducks. the bullets were getting closer and it would get quiet and he would reload and it started

going again. the girl standing behind me about two feet, she got shot in the stomach. everybody thought at first it was just firecrackers and it kept going more and more. and i even told my husband, it's firecrackers. he said, no, it's not. it's a machine gun, automatic rifle or something. everyone started running but you couldn't run because you couldn't tell where the shots were coming from. there was me and my husband and others and a metro cop who was lying on top of me so i wouldn't get shot. it was so scary. we went out. there were people lying on las vegas boulevard. they were shot. there's blood everywhere. it's horrifying. you know. you hear it on tv, but you don't think it's going to happen to you. >> now our cbs las vegas

affiliate has been following this breaking news all night. >> reporter: so we're behind the tropicana right now. we're on reno avenue. absolute chaos. we even seen trucks filled with people with gunshot wounds, bloods. people running through the streets, hundreds running from the festival shaken up. we're actually joined by andrea and shannon caffey who were at the festival. i know you're pretty shaken up, but can you describe what you saw earlier? >> we were in the vip tent and about eight shots went off. we thought they were firecrackers. we were by the port-a-potties. where was that? >> by the mandalay bay. >> we thought it was fine. everyone laid down. event staff was telling everybody to get down and they were trying to evacuate us out

the back. the problem was the fences were all bolted together. everybody worked together. they worked together. they staged the injured in i want to say between the 4 a and 4 b entrance in a tent. it was very -- they did the best they could to get us out of there, but people knew. people knew what to do. >> reporter: got it, got it. i heard reports from other people. they saw tens, maybe hundreds of people and deceased bodies. did you see that? >> we saw one officer down at the back gate. he was down by the car. i don't know why he was down. rescue crews were working on him or next to hum. and we saw that triage tent. there was blood on ankles and people had claimed they were shot, but with the chaos, they could have just been tram. ed or bumped or ran into the fencing. the fencing was tripping everybody. >> because i tripped.

>> reporter: definitely. when you first heard all of this, what was your first shot? what did you initially think was going on. >> i thought it was fireworks, somebody was playing around. it got worse. it sounded like ma dheen guns going off. >> i spoke with someone who said they heard at least 100 gunshots. do you think that's accurate? >> it's got to be more. >> they were coming from the port-a-potties, staging area, vip area. i didn't -- we didn't see actual rifles shooting or the bullets landing. we didn't see any of that. i'm just impressed that the public really knew what to do. they laid down. everybody helped everybody. it was not widespread chaos. it was very organized. and the event staff, they tried to do the best they could with what they had. >> reporter: thank you so much. thank you so much. that's the information we have

right now. we don't have any confirmed details from officials. we are seeing ambulances as you can see and probably hear, speeding up and down the road trying to assist those who are injured. we're seeing dozens on the streets covered in blood, some holding their arms or legs o whatever is to trienld to find the medical staff to get the assistance what they need. reporting live, darlene melendez. >> it's really unfolding as we speak. gunfire in las vegas aimed at a concert right across the street from the mandolay bay and casino. what we are hearing is it's possibly gunfire coming from the mandalay bay targeted toward the concertgoers. if you listen, you can hear the gunfire. we're showing you the concert

venue where people are scattering, running for cover as the shots are being fired. jason aldean was on stage at the tomb. police are giving us limited information. we know at this time by the police that one suspect is down. exactly what that means, we to not know. one suspect is down. one hospital in the area is reporting at least two people dead and 24 people injured. now, we know that the las vegas police are planning a press conference any moment now, and as soon as that happens, we'll be taking you live to that. do we know if that's happening any time soon? in five or ten minutes we hope to get that information for you. in the meantime -- of course, we're going to continue covering the las vegas story, but we want to head to puerto rico. in puerto rico, the president is planning to visit the island tomorrow. san juan's mayor accused the president of killing us with

inefficienc inefficiency. over the weekend the president fired back. john shoe moe is here in new york with the latest on puerto rico. good morning. >> good morning. most residents are without water. president trump insists, though, federal workers are doing well and the island is slowly recovered. president trump will visit puerto rico tomorrow to survey the damage for himself from hurricane maria. outside the white house he come menled the work of the workers. >> we're getting things done. >> more troops are on the ground and more fuel is reaching the island. most puerto ricans are still without water. fuel and water still scarce. fema is calling this the biggest event they've ever seen.

>> every day we make progress, every day we have some setbacks. >> illinois representative luis gutierrez just returned from puerto rico. he's among many urging the president to stop attacks on puerto rico. like this one. such poor leadership ability by the mayor of san taiwan and others who are not helping. >> shut down the twitter account, do your job. help them. send them the resources. >> parts of puerto rico today are under a flash flood warning. fema's chief returns to puerto rico today and is expected to give a firsthand update on response and recovery later this morning. anne-marie? >> john schumo in new york. thank you, john. gunfire at a country music festival in las vegas. the festival was taking place

across the mandalay bay ho tell. the shooter was selling from across the street with possibly a weapon of some kind. john blackstone is there. do i understand there are witnesses with you? >> reporter: paul and monique dumas came from canada, british columbia, and indeed they know this was a hay-powered automatic weapon, semiautomatic weapon being used here. paul, tell us what you saw, paul and monique. >> we were town at center stage having a good time, jason was playing, and all of a sudden we heard pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, countless times. it sounded like firecrackers. then he fired more rounds and that's when it sounded like a fully loaded automatic. we lied down and clung to each

other. that was it. another 30 rounds. every time he stopped, he was reloading, we had got p up making ow way toward the fence. then he started shooting again and hit the ground. i must have heard him do it at least 15 times. >> monique, what are you thinking when you're lying there and all these shots are again and again and again. >> you're thinking this not happening to us, but the same time i'm thinking i need to save my life, tay with my husband, my sister, and my brother-in-law. we needed to not panic, get away from it. >> all of you were lying down. >> yes. >> did you see anybody get hit? >> we didn't see anybody get hit but on the right-hand side of the stage people were crawling for a med ilk or security and someone had been hit on the right hand side of the stage. >> and as we were leaving, we were going to our cars to the parking lot, we could see people lying on the ground in the fetal

position with people over them. there were half a dozen we'd seen. >> you got out of the concert and you were directed to the mandalay bay. >> we got out and people were kicking down the fences, just climbing over the top of them. yeah, we made it back roads and we were directed into the mandolay bay anded a we were coming through the man dough bei bei, we didn't know it, but apparently he was upstairs shooting in the rooms. then we made it out of mandolay bay and over to mctonld's and over here. >> you came a long way from down the strip from this. >> oh, yeah. >> you say it seemed like perhaps as many as 15 times he reloaded? >> easily, easily. with at least 30 rounds he was firing out of each magazine. >> it was about 45 minutes of gunshot. my sister had video also. 45 minutes of us running and hearing gunshots and crouching

behind cars and trying to get away. >> the shooting would stop and then you would hit the dirt. >> we weren't running. everybody was nice and calm. there were a few people running and we stopped them and calmed our way. it went to a gooseneck and bottled up. everybody kamly kept going and made it out. then we ran. once we got on the streets, we started to run and we tack the back roads here. >> you're saying as you were existing, all these people were calm? >> it was remarkable. everyone was trying to get as fast as they can but stay calm, don't panic, it were surreal. that it was happening and even was looking out for everyone. >> when you got out, tell me what sort of relief was it when you got out, well aware. >> >> i don't know if it's hit

me yet what happened. >> i didn't find it really -- it was very nervous coming from all the way from there to here. we didn't know if they found him or got him. we don't know if he's out here. going at us. so, yeah, it was never racking coming here. >> do you think it was one shooter reloading and reloading? >> sounds like it to me. it was pop, pop, pop, pop. it wasn't like pop-pop, pop-pop like two. it was quiet for 15 seconds and then pop, pop, pop, pop. so you could tell it was one. sounded look it. >> thank you for sharing your story with us. that's tra mat ilk and terrifying. soon we're going to hear from police on exactly what happened. until then, anne-marie, we'll go back to you. >> john blackstone in las vegas.

would be quiet and they'd reload and they would start going again. and the grl that was standing right behind me about two feet, she got shot in the stomach. everybody thought at first it was just firecrackers and then everybody just kind of -- it kept going more. i told my husband, it's firecrackers. he said, no, it's not. it's a machine gun or something, automatic rifle. everybody started running. there was nowhere to run because you couldn't tell where it was coming from. there was like a girl, a guy, me, my husband mike, and a metro cop, and he was lying on top of me to protect me so i wouldn't get shot. it was so scary. we left and got out. we went out and there were people lying on las vegas boulevard. they were shot. there was blood everywhere. it was horrifying, you know. you hear about tv, but you don't think it's going to happen to you.

>> so recapping the breaking news now out of las vegas, a shooter took aim at concertgoers outside the mandalay bay ho tell on the las vegas strip. at least two people are dead and more than 20 are wounded, and as we understand it, an off-duty police officer was also shot. police say one suspect is down and there were no other shooters. speaking to our cbs affiliate, one witness describes what she saw from the hotel room above the scene. all right. we don't have that sound for you right now. just to continue with the update. flights in and out of the airport were temporarily halted. the "los angeles times" -- actually now on to some other news for now. okay, we have a lot more news. we're going to continue to cover this las vegas news for you. you're watching "cbs morning news." oh! i'm so proud of you.
