bay. >> gunman firing on an outdoor concert on the las vegas strip , from 32 stories high, round after round the bird rage of bullets relentless. >> he would not stop it just kept going and going. >> you could see bodies dropping and people getting hit with shrapnel. one of the greatest things, i saw people in front of me, get hit with bullets. >> reporter: suspect 64 year-old retiree stephen paddock his hotel room filled with arsenal of weapons. >> this was a cowardly despicable act. >> tonight, the question on everyone's mine is why? good evening i'm ukee washington. aim jessica dean. in just a moment more accounts from philadelphians in las vegas during the shooting but first we will give you the latest on the investigation. the massacre happened on the final night of the route 91 harvest festival, while some 22,000 people enjoyed the music, the gun man was held up in a hotel room high above the concert grounds. police there say he smashed out the windows and then

opened fire. killing, 58 people and injuring more than 500 others. >> initially, i thought it was fire works but then right after fire works they turned the lights on and then about 5 a guy with the bullet wound in his neck motionless from there on in people just started dropping like flies. >> swat teams stormed gunman's mandalay bay hoe fell room. investigators are working to figure out a motive but say the 64 retie rehad no ties to international terror groups. president trump spoke about the mass shooting at the white house, earlier today. >> to the families of the victims we are praying for you , and we are here for you. we ask god to help see you through this very dark period. scripture teaches us the lord is close to the broken hearted and saves those who are

crushed in spirit. we seek comfort in those word for we know that god lives in the hearts of those grief. >> this afternoon the president and the white house staffers took part in the moment of silence on the white house lawn. the president is set to visit las vegas on wednesday. those who lived through this nightmare are still trying to come to grips with the horror that unfolded right in front of them. alexandria movies at philadelphia international airport right now. alex, you talked with some who just arrived home from las vegas. >> reporter: yeah, ukee that is right, you said it, it is still sinking in for people that we spoke with. they went from such a high to such a terrible low, so quickly and they are now left to wrestle with the what their thoughts were. >> i have to call my mom, shots being fired, told her i loved her. i said i'll be okay. >> reporter: steve gold of wilmington arrived off his plane from las vegas with weary eyes and a aching heart.

>> only thing i know sometimes , you know, you just start crying like why did this happen. >> reporter: he was among 22,000 people attending route 91 harvest festival on the strip, gold says that the wrapped fire shots he heard, seemed to be direct toward the stage. >> there was blood every where it was just, people getting up and away and next thing i know , i jumped inside of a taco stand. >> reporter: gold then went on to help hoist a bike stand on its side so a large fence could be scaled. a tearful hug was shared between another concert goer megan o'donnell and her husband drove from wilmington pick her up. the biggest stand out for a lot of people we spoke with was compassion and the courage that they saw from complete strangers, in the wake of this deadly chaos. reporting live from philly international,al sand that hoff for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> alex, thank you. other people from our area

in las vegas during the shooting are still there tonight. the grateful to be alive and to be able to share their stories to day and "eyewitness news" reporter anita oh is in the satellite center to tell us about eyewitness accounts that hit very close to home, neat a. >> reporter: that is right, jessica we are hearing so many stories of survival now, some of those are from our region and they have horrifying accounts of this mass shooting as they sprint add way from that gunfire but one man from the lehigh valley had a different vantage point out there in vegas and soon discovered he was un comfortably close to the source of that violent a tack. the sound of gunfire at route 91 harvest music festival in las vegas sentence of thousands scrambling. for allentown native ben sween any vegas for a business trip the sound too close to comfort left him frozen. >> to me it sounded like he was in the room next to me. >> reporter: he landed in vegas sunday night and checked in his room on the 30th floor of the mandalay bay where he

was self impose a lock down. the 64 year-old gunman cleared window of the room there and started firing in the crowd. >> i was than the putting two and two together, i realize sod one a few rooms away from me shooting 200-yard away, 32 floors down, you know, cross a road into that concert. >> reporter: that is where a philadelphia man was taken cover under the stage. he said he sent "eyewitness news" video as he made a break for safety. he is one of the hundreds who ran from the barrage of bullets, a seen ron and sue benson of lawnside, new jersey saw while returning to their dinner after dinner on the strip. >> it was chaos. as soon as somebody said there was a shooter on the street coming our way it was chaos. >> reporter: benson took off her heels and started running too, slice herring feet on glass and extent on the pavement. >> we were trying to get out of the area because we didn't want to die. >> reporter: it also so happens to be sue benson's birthday. she said mood in vegas is

somber completely opposite when she arrived yesterday and people you heard from in that story are expect to return home to our area bite end of this week. live from the sat center i'm anita oh for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> thanks, anita. this afternoon white house press secretary sarah huckabee sanders recounted stories on have bravery and self lessness during the attack and it included a philadelphia man who jumped in to action when the gun fire started. >> others risk their own lives to save people they had never met. mike mcgary of philadelphia lied on top of students at the cons court protect them from the gunfire. they are 20, i'm 53. i have lived a good life. >> reporter: thinks a photo of mr. mcgary, financial advisor who risked his life to save others. of course, it is nearly impossible to prepare for something like the mass shooting in las vegas but police are always learning from these tragedies in hopes of preventing another one from happening. >> joining us is philadelphia police commissioner richard ross, commissioner we are so

pleased to have you. thanks so much for being here. >> thank you. >> we look at this outdoor concert. i can't help but think about the things we have on the parkway. we have these large crowd. you guys of course prepare for this. what were your first thoughts when you started to hear all this? what goes through your mind from your perspective. >> i could not believe it at first. you're hoping that what you are seeing is almost like a dream and it turns out to be a absolute nightmare. you think about the fact that it could happen anywhere and despite your best efforts to plan, there is virtually nothing that las vegas could have done to prevent this we do a lot of things in law enforcement, we have a miracle of events on the parkway and all along this city, and we learn from each other, most often, it is from tragic events sadly and you know, i look at sheriff lombard owe who i know, we went through a training together for aspiring chiefs seven years ago and

that could not have prepared him for this or anybody else for that mather what you do i think is going through his mind i heard you express that you do know the sheriff out there. what can possibly be going through his mind, not trying to correct the situation but to deal witt. >> well, he is thinking about leadership and making sure that he represents not only his department but the nation in a way that is, honorable and he has done just. that i could not be more proud of him and his department. from everything that i have seen, the manner in which las vegas responded it is nothing short of remarkable. >> you all as i say prepare for this sort of the thing and i know you cannot get in to details because that is part of the preparation but when you talk to your men and women when you go through these training and trainings what are you focusing on? what are you trying to do to make yourself as prepared as possible in the event of something like this. >> well, look the world has changed post 9/11, right. the events that we never

two weeks after marie's devastating blow the country is still reeling, i'm alycia nieves and she's live with the serious issues plaquing the largest cities, kate. beautiful weather but showers you see over central part of the country will get out of the way. i will tell you when showers return and heat and humidity ramps backup as well, don. eagles won three out of four but they are trying to get better and it starts when the game end, why the bird d need to be better in the fourth quarter, that is later in sports.

in las vegas right now officials are still removing bodies from the scene of the shooting, and they have updated the death toll, to 59 people who are now confirmed dead. 527 injured, authorities gave that update moments ago. this more than 12 hours after a gunman opened fire on the crowd of roughly 20,000 people

attending a outdoor music festival. authorities say hundreds of people who were wounded were taken to five southern nevada hospitals. as for the lone gunman it appears he has killed himself after the attack. there is no known motive so far. now to the crisis in puerto rico days after maria unleashes unprecedented damage >> president trump will visit puerto rico for for firsthand look at damage and relief efforts. puerto rico's governor say quarter resident will have power restored by next month, right now half of the island has running water, our alycia knee he have has been traveling across puerto rico sharing stories of those affected by the storm and she joins us live from san juan tonight with more, alycia? report report well, ukee and jessica one part of the island we knew we had to go to was p.o. nce, over and over in the states we have heard that almost nobody could get a hold of anybody down there. when we got here on the ground

october, yes. >> that is right. >> can you believe it is october already. >> wow, what is going on. >> it is starting to feel a little bit more like october. >> yesterday was first day of the new month and now october 2nd we are feeling the fall, really the fall delay. it is in the mid 70's, sunnies shining low humidity. hated been perfect yesterday and today. tomorrow more of the same. eventually heat and humidity will creep back in. we were talking about getting cold, and then the heat not done with us just yet. here's is what going on, up to the poconos where the sunnies starting to drop, shadows are lengthening and the sunset, in about half an hour or so there , you can see the fall colors, mid-october or so where they reached peak of fall foliage in the poconos and we are heading toward that time frame, very, very quickly only a week or two from peak foliage so get out there take a peak if you like to see leaves change in the mountains storm scan three looking clear high pressure in control nothing going on. is there a front to the west

what you see here, it is producing showers across portions of minnesota, wisconsin, dakotas, eventually this will get here but see lifting to the north and east around that big dome of high pressure which is keeping us protect from any adverse weather conditions. reviewing september, september ended above average, precipitation and temperature wise. temperature wise 2.3 degrees above the normal. we had well a would have average for second half of the movement precipitation was just slightly above average right on target there, and our high temperature is 92 degrees , low temperature of the month, 53 degrees. of course we started october on a very chilly note on sunday. temperatures right now, 73 in philadelphia feels great out there but now that the sunnies going done earlier every night and in the 6:00 o'clock are hour we will see these fall off quickly. we will be in the 70's until eight or 9:00 like we are in summertime. it is in the 60's in dover. sixty-nine in lancaster.

sixty-three in mount pocono. ocean water temperature dropped to 69 degrees as well and millville at 70 degrees. high pressure again overhead that will keep us in the sunny stretch that first le goes to the north so at lee through wednesday right through mid week we're talking sunshine, low humidity, cool mornings and nice warm afternoon and morning lows will stay in the 50's, pretty much every day at lee through wednesday but then this system will eventually drag a cold front through the area and we will start off on thursday. i just want to show you thursday is our next chance to pick up showers, there is a few cloud, thursday warm and steamy, shower or two there is not much with it so that is good news but that is our next chance to pick up wet weather. until then we are sitting pretty. overnight we will drop to a cool 53 mainly clear tomorrow lots of sunshine another nice 175 is our daytime high and really wednesday looks great as well, morning fog and then high of 78, thursday, warmer more humid, maybe a stray sprinkle, better chance for one on friday as that front
