like this? >> you want to run out of the center and go to the side. run, run, run! >> a special inside edition, massacre in vegas. now, inside edition with deborah norville. >> deborah norville: hello everybody. thank you for joining us. america is still trying to come to grips with the worse mass shooting in u.s. history, something the president called an act of evil. you have heard the stats, scores are dead, more than 515 injured. there was only one gunman who opened fire from a 32nd floor window on to the 20,000 people at an outdoor concert below. we have the latest in a report that does include footage that could be upsetting to some viewers. it was the moment the shooting started and the music died. country music star jason aldean runs from the stage as gunfire rains down on 20,000 fans. every moment of the horror was

caught on video. you can see concert goers fleeing for their lives. the folks shooting this video from a balcony had to duck. this was the terrifying scene on the ground, people huddling for cover, keeping their heads down. there was a pause in the shooting. the killer is apparently swapping weapons. then gunfire erupts again and more bodies fall. one woman points to the upper floors of the mandalay bay hotel from where the gunman is firing. there is panic in a hospitality tent near the stage, terrified fans crouching down as the sound of machine gunfire echos around them. attorney brian clay pool was at the concert. >> it's pot luck whoever lives or dies. >> we need your truck, need to get people to the hospital. okay? >> a passing suv was commandeered to bring the wounded to the hospital. you see victims with gun shot wounds carried on fencing used as make shift stretchers.

the deadly rain of bullets continued for four and a half minutes. >> we can't worry. we need to stop the shooter before we have more victims. >> a swat team closed in on the gunman on the 32nd floor. >> i am inside the mandalay on the 31st floor. i can hear the automatic fire coming from one floor ahead. >> we were coming out on the 32 32nd floor. there is one down, 32nd floor, mandalay bay. >> you see tracking warmer weather blown out windows in the corner suite where the gunman made his nest. the windows don't open so he smashed them with a hammer. >> cops say they found 19 guns and two firing platforms inside the suite. cops say he positioned a surveillance camera to warn him when police arrived. the famed strip was shut down in the aftermath of the shooting. much of it has since reopened. >> the latest casualty count, 58 dead and more than 500

wounded. the shooter has been identified as a 64 year old retired accountant who had a girlfriend and lived about 70 miles from las vegas. his own brother is speaking out saying the family is dumbfounded by what's happened. >> we are learning more about the mad man behind the las vegas massacre, 64 year old stephen paddock of mesquite, nevada. >> we are shocked, horrified, completely dumbfounded. >> his stunned brother eric could only shake his head as he spoke to reporters outside his home near orlando. >> he is a guy who lived in a house in mesquite and drove down and gambled in las vegas. he did stuff, ate burritos. >> reporter: stephen paddock once owned a home in florida located inside a 55 plus retirement community. he sold it in 2015 for

$235,000. neighbors say he told them he was a professional gambler by trade. his brother says he moved to nevada to leave the florida humidity and because he also liked to play video poker. police say paddock checked into his corner hotel suite on the 32 32nd floor of the mandalay bay casino last thursday, september 28. here is the inside edition producer. >> police say paddock exhibited no sign of plotting a massacre during his stay at mandalay bay. when housekeeping came, they reportedly found nothing unusual. >> not an avid gun guy. the fact that he had those weapons is just -- where the hell did he get automatic weapons? >> moments after the interview the stress kicked in as paddock's brother had a melt down with reporters. >> i am done talking to all of you people. >> this is the unremarkable house in mesquite, nevada where the suspect lived about 70

miles from las vegas. paddock had a hunting license in texas and was a licensed pilot who once owned his own plane. he was married and divorced twice. he had no children. now, get this, paddock's father was on the fbi's most wanted list in the 1960s. he went to prison for bank robbery. >> this was the mug shot that the fbi put out when he was added to the ten most wanted list with his picture like that one there. >> in the chaotic moments following carnage, there was a nationwide man hunt for paddock's girlfriend, 62 year old marilou danley. >> there is another person of interest in this case. marilou danley, 4'11". you see a picture of her. >> police found her overseas. the fbi says she is cooperating with the investigation. she says she knew nothing about paddock's plot. on her facebook page danley describes herself as a proud mom and grandma who lives life

to the fullest. >> deborah norville: in the panic as the gunfire seemed endless concert goers took cover anywhere they could. in the case of one group or people, that safe pace was a trailer that turned out to be a freezer. >> harrowing video of concert goers should a thed in a giant cooler back stage asthma hem unfolds around them. the hero who led them there was brian hopkins of the country group elvis monroe. >> some sort of shooting at jason aldean. >> he and his band were enjoying the show like thousands of other fans when suddenly they heard loud pops. we heard and not thinking about it, we thought it was fire crackers. >> both were baffled until more gunfire was heard. >> like a burst of it. >> the two took off running but quickly lost each other in the chaos. brian decided to head back

stage and tried to cross a barricade but found himself trapped. brian tried to keep everyone calm. >> we were like quiet, "hey bud, sit in front of me." when the gunfire ended they left the cooler. >> we see body, body, body, body. in the last one the guy has a bullet hole in his stomach. >> after things calmed down brian updated his situation to his fans. >> the shooter positioned himself on the 32nd floor of the mandalay bay hotel with a bird's eye view of the concert below. mandalay bay is one of the largest hotels in las vegas and ordinarily is known for outside shows and over the top amusements. now, however, it is known for something very disturbing. >> the up scale mandalay bay is the last hotel on the strip. you see the proximity to the site of last night's deadly rampage. >> mandalay bay's resort queen

room. >> in this home video taken a year ago, a hotel guest shares the view from the 34th floor. sunday night's mad man was two floors below with the same view. >> this is fancy. >> the 3000 room mandalay bay is one of vegas' most lavish. it opened in 1999 to great fan fare with john good man, dan akroid performing as blues brothers at the grand opening ceremony. it took the place of the hicienda which was imploded in a party like atmosphere on new year's eve 1996. the mandalay sits at the south end of the famous strip. next to it is the pyramid shaped luxor. then the castle like ex caliber. as you head down the strip you pass the famous mountains. then at the far end of the strip is the iconic

pocket, enjoy yourself. >> reporter: he says don't assume loud bangs are fireworks. apparently that's what many fans at the vegas music festival thought. >> you hear that noise. what should your first action be? >> start moving. don't wait. every second you wait, that's additional shots fired, additional injuries and people killed. start moving right away. move to the out skirts. don't run to the masses. don't run the same way everybody else is. the shots are fired from somewhere here. run to that statue. run, run, run. you stay out of the center. you run behind that tree out there. >> reporter: listen for a pause. that can be a sign that the shooter is reloading. >> during the erie silence when he is reloading, you have seconds, could be two, could be ten, you can get 40, 50, 60 feet away. that can make the difference in living and dying. >> reporter: all the heavy fire

>> deborah norville: on any other day, a different event might have been our top story from las vegas. o.j. simpson out of prison is spending his first hours of freedom there, not far from the massacre site. >> how does it feel to be out? >> how? y'all stalking me? >> reporter: o.j. simpson startled by a photographer outside a nevada gas station after being released from prison. >> where are you headed? >> none of your business. i am in a car for the last five hours. how do i know how it feels to be out? >> little did simpson know that a few hours later his new home would be the site of the worst mass shooting in u.s. history. dressed in a baseball cap and

over sized jacket, simpson was freed sunday shortly after midnight in the cover of darkness from lovelock correctional center where he served nine years for robbery. his first meal, mcdonald's where he reportedly ordered two number fours, double quarter pounders with cheese. parole officials say the 70 year old will be required to live in las vegas for the time being. he is reportedly staying at a friend's house near the vegas strip, the scene of sunday night's massacre. i spoke to simpson's lawyer who told me simpson ultimately wants to return to florida. can we assume he will have to stay in vegas for a certain amount of time and then also assume that he would ultimately like to live close to his children? >> here is what i can tell you. mr. simpson is going to live in florida. that's the only thing i can guarantee you, that he is going to live in florida. this idea of being in vegas, i don't see that as necessarily being practical. >> please can i have a break

>> deborah norville: finally, we are learning more about some of the people who lost their lives during the mass shooting in las vegas, many young concert goers out having a night of fun before the unthinkable happened. >> the names of the concert goers who lost their lives in the las vegas massacre are trickling out. 29 year old sonny melton, a registered nurse from tennessee reportedly climbed on top of his wife heather to save her. denise posted this photo of herself and her husband of 32 years tony enjoying the concert. a few minutes later she was shot and died in her husband's arms. the family of 20 year old nevada college student quinn ton robbins an avid fisherman identified him as one of the fallen. high school secretary lisa romero was a tourist from new mexico. single mother of four, jessica
