>> ♪ >> live from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia, this is cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> right now at noon an hours long standoff has ended in northampton. chopper3 over oakland square drive in bethlehem as officers arrested a suspect in a homicide that happened last night. the standoff led to the lockdown of several schools. all of those lock downs have been lifted. we'll continue to follow the story on air and on cbsphilly.com. good afternoon, i'm rahel solomon. >> and i'm jim donovan.

to las vegas where investigators are looking into gunman stephen paddock's past. police are sorting through the gunman's history of checking in or trying to book rooms in other hotels across the country near concert events before sunday's mass shooting. the shooting lasted about 10 minutes as paddock fired rounds from the 32nd floor of the mandalay bay hotel and casino. now the sheriff's department says it's trying to figure out if paddock had any help planning the massacre. mola lenghi has the latest from las vegas. [gunfire] >> reporter: investigators are looking into the mass shooting in las vegas released a time line of sunday night's events. they say gunman stephen paddock fired the first shots at 10:05 p.m. he stopped shooting 10 minutes later at 10:15. two minutes after that officers reached the 32nd floor of the mandalay bay hotel where paddock was hold up. at 11:20 officers breached the hotel room and found paddock's body after he shot himself. police say they think paddock had an escape plan but minutes

after the shooting began a hotel security guard showed up outside his suite and paddock shot him in the leg. >> he remained with our officers providing them the key pass to access the door and actually continued to help them clear rooms. >> reporter: investigators are looking to see whether paddock tried to book rooms in other hotels across the country near big concert events before sunday's mass shooting. the weekend before the shooting paddock rented a room at another las vegas hotel, the ogden near a different music festival. yesterday the fbi spoke with paddock's girlfriend marilou danley. through her attorney she says she had no idea what he was up to when he sent her to the philippines. >> "i was worried at first the unexpected trip home and then the money was a way of breaking up with me. it never occurred to me in any way whatsoever that he was planning violence ." >> reporter: authorities say based on the amount of weapons found at the crime scene, they assume paddock had to have

help. mola lenghi for cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> well, incredible stories of selflessness and courage are emerging in the aftermath of the las vegas shooting. canadian jan lam born's life was saved by a nevada man she had never before. they saw each other yesterday for the first time since the attack. when the gunman opened fire jan was hit in the stomach. justin stayed with her until she was taken in for surgery. we are tracking all of the developments in the las vegas shooting. stay with cbs3 as we bring you the latest here on "eyewitness news" and you can always stay informed on cbsphilly.com. >> photos circulating on social media shows a mascot from a delaware high school holding a racial slur written on a piece of paper. the photo of the rider mascot from caesar rodney high school is now being investigated by the high school administration and the delaware state police. so far no word on who is responsible for taking this photo. caesar rodney school district superintendent kevin

fitzgerald did release a statement about the photo saying in part the caesar rodney school district is distressed that our mascot would be used in such a manner and we strongly disavow the statement. the caesar rodney school district and caesar rodney high school consider racial slurs reprehensible and are deeply disturbed by the content of the message. we have zero tolerance for this behavior. >> the tropics are getting active. we're keeping our eye on nate. meteorologist kate fehlinger is tracking nate live on the cbs3 sky deck where temperatures here are on the rise. >> they certainly are, jim and we'll continue to see them warming even in the next couple days. we'll talk much more about that as the show progresses but i want to give you a sense of what's going on in the tropics. we're far from through with this hurricane season. we have until the end of november to get through before you're at least climatically speaking done. it is moving up toward the

yucatan peninsula over the caribbean like to scrape past that zone and also then make another landfall up near new orleans. now, if we can find, you know, some sort of positive in this, the good news is that it's going to bypass houston beaumont but there's a likelihood this could be making landfall over the new orleans area by sunday so we'll need to keep an eye on that. where does it go from there? since it moved inland it will lose some of its steam but it also draws in a lot of moisture and that then eventually heads our way. so we end up with a pretty decent chance of seeing soaking rain further down the road. we'll talk about that later in the show. we've got a frontal boundary trying to drop in here and it's not going have much success passing through. so, in short because it gets stuck, we remain on the warm side. it feels really comfortable on the cbs3 sky deck, mid to upper 70's essentially region wide. meanwhile daytime highs could hit about 81 in the city. but we're already starting to

see some comparatively to yesterday and the day before a few deductible additional clouds. humidity relatively low. later today some portions of our area will see a little bit of wet weatherly we'll track that for you and it looks like the p.m. drive could be impacted and we'll get more specific on the timing on that later in the show. back to you. >> katie we'll see you soon. thank you. pennsylvania republican congressman tim murphy says he will not seek reelection after reports that he asked his mistress to have an abortion. this comes one day after the pittsburgh gazette published a pair of text messages between representative murphy and his alleged mistress. nancy cordes reports from capitol hill. >> these are real beings. >> reporter: for more than a decade on capitol hill, pennsylvania congressman tim murphy has backed up pro life agenda. >> we have every right to protect those lives as part of our responsibility as men and

as fathers. >> reporter: but according to the pittsburgh post gazette, in january, murphy's alleged mistress shannon edwards texted him saying you have zero issue posting your pro life stance all over the place when you had no issue asking me to abort our unborn child just last week. murphy reportedly responded i get what you say about my march for life messages. i've never written them. staff does them. >> the bill is passed. >> reporter: the story unfolded just as the house approved legislation tuesday that would make abortions after 20 weeks illegal. murphy a member of the house pro life caucus co-sponsored and voted for the bill. the post gazette also obtained a memo reportedly written by murphy's chief of staff in june that claims staffers have been exposed to angry aggressive and abusive behavior from the congressman which has led to a nearly 100 percent turnover withone one year's time. on a recent visit to his home

district she writes your driving was dangerous and erratic. i feared for my life. i repeatedly at least 15 times asked you to stop texting. murphy's hostility and insults she adds were frightening. he has made the decision to retire after consulting with house speaker paul ryan but says he will serve out his remaining 15 months in office. nancy cordes. >> police investigate a triple shooting in north philadelphia. one man is dead while another man and a teen are in the hospital. shots rang out on the 2500 block of dover street around 11:30 last night. police say a 24-year-old man was shot numerous times in his chest back and legs. officers rushed him to the hospital where he later died. a 24-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy were also rushed to the hospital with gunshot wounds. both are in stable condition. eyewitnesses told police they saw the shooter take off.

>> the shooter may have left the scene in a white van or minivan. >> officers have not yet identified the man who died. police say they found shell casings from two different guns. now investigators are trying to figure out if there were two shooters or one shooter with two guns. >> a deadly crash shuts down the eastbound lanes of the schuylkill expressway overnight. the accident involved a car and a motorcycle. this happened around 3:30 this morning in grays ferry. the driver of the motorcycle was pronounced dead at the scene. traffic was forced off i-76 east at the grays ferry avenue as it snarled traffic during the morning rush. the lanes reopened just before 9:00 a.m. a pizza shop in chalfont bucks county appears to be a total loss after an overnight fire. took at least four fire companies to put those flames out. this is the 400 block of west butler avenue. the inside of the building appears to be charred there. no one was hurt and no word on how the fire started. >> well, as the people of puerto rico continue to clean

up in the aftermath of hurricane maria more local help is on the way. additional members of the salvation army of eastern pennsylvania and delaware left from philadelphia international airport this morning. they'll be assisting with needs on the ground for two weeks. among those headed there is bob myers who recently returned from a deployment to florida for hurricane irma. >> and we understand that slowly things are starting to improve with the infrastructure coming back on line. our mission is largely a feeding standpoint. our goal is to be able to do a hundred thousand meals a day to support folks impacted by the storms. >> the salvation army will also focus on distributing supplies that may be waiting in shipping containers on the island. well, coming up, we know that smartphones are distracting for drivers but it turns out there could be another dangerous distraction on your dashboard. we'll explain after the break. >> also, a tonka truck torched. why a little boy's parents say they were surprised why the

truck caught fire even though it was recalled.

>> astronauts on board the international space station are working together during the first of three space walks to give the facility's enormous robot a brand new hand. the latching mechanism on the robot arm malfunctioned in august and needs to be replaced. the arm is used to grab

visiting spacecraft and engineers say the trouble is because of wear and tear. teamwork always a good thing. as of today you are no longer allowed to fly a drone near philadelphia landmarks. the faa banned drone flights near 400 feet of independence national historic park and 10 sites where the flights are being restricted including the statue of liberty and mount rushmore. >> there's other technology that leads to distracted driving. info at the same time systems put technology right in the car's dashboard but they also cause drivers to take their eyes off the road and hands off the wheel. this is the finding of a aaa study that examined the impacts of the touch screen systems since 2013. >> some of the most advanced systems are really very difficult for the driver to use, may take minutes to actually perform. >> researchers had two dozen volunteers test 30 different vehicles. the study found drivers were visually distracted for 40 seconds while programming the navigation system or sending a

text. aaa says removing your eyes from the road for just two seconds can double the risk of a crash. well, a mother in florida wants to warn parents after her son's toy tonka truck caught fire. >> she says it happened when her husband was just moving the toy. the parents found out it was recalled a few months ago. now the company said it was recalled because the acceleration pedal would stick but apparently it did not mention anything about it being a fire hazard. >> we just want to let all the parents know to beware if this is in your garage especially. we were lucky enough that our son was not on it and it was not in the garage. >> the company ma takes the toy did visit the family and said that they will reimburse them for the cost of the truck. >> well, there's a party and you're invited. >> still ahead on "eyewitness news," the adventure aquarium preparing a party to say guy guy -- goodbye to one of its sea turtles. >> is that was winter is coming. >> the weekend is pretty fast

approaching. the heat continues to build with every lasting day. this weekend feels the warmest with august like conditions. we have showers in the forecast for game day for the eagles on sunday. shouldn't be a washout but maybe a little bit damp down there at the

on featured flavors. stop selling the obscure doughnuts. >> there was one with crushed up pretzels on top. >> that sounds delightful. >> that's like a specialty. do they have that every day. >> i could eat it every day. doesn't bother me. >> stock up now. >> to keep you slim and trim you can't have doughnuts every day. >> this body just doesn't happen on its own. >> you can have the doughnuts or run. i'll pick that up and run with that ball, thank you. yes, definitely warming up out there. it's already warmer by 10 degrees from the at the same time yesterday. it certainly has warmed up by comparison and we're going to continue to trend into the weekend all because a front just can't, you know, make its full passage through the area. so, as that is kind of stuck nearby it keeps us with a southerly wind flow. it means the humidity will start to ramp up a little bit and at times we'll have a couple shots to see wet weather. today may bring in locally soaking weather. i want to take you to storm

scan if we can. storm scan bringing with it right now a lot of clouds across central pennsylvania. a hint of wet weather through i80 traveling through central pa. no harm no foul, right? you take a look at the wider zoom and there's a pretty substantial batch of rain working through the buckeye state back through indiana. that's what gets here later on today and originally we said the window would be maybe 3:00 p.m. until about 8:00 p.m. looks like it may come a little bit later so toward the tail end of the day as many of you are sort of wrapping up the typical evening drive. we have tropical moisture but no named system out of this batch of showers working through the sunshine state down in florida. not a ton of sunshine everywhere there but really this front is our weather maker and it's a game changer, it's the pattern changer for our area. when we look at future weather we should get through the better part of the afternoon without any hitches. let's look at the timing. that's a soaking batch of rain so so so so that you may not get away

with a straight up light shower here or there. at the moment this is expected to stay just north of philadelphia county. i don't want to rule it out here in philly but the batch of this really soaking rain as, again, as long as it verifies would likely fall in the northern half of the area and likely just as the typical evening rush is finishing up. so, delaware you're basically in the clear. southern new jersey, you should be fine as well. but you'll start to notice those clouds building in. now, looking forward things should begin to gradually clear out later on tonight but the other cool thing that's going on tonight is our next full moon and it's called the harvest moon because it's the full moon closest to the fall equinox. the moon will be arriving at 6:56. you'll have a clear moonlit view of that as the sun goes down earlier and earlier. it goes down shortly after 6:30 this evening. you should have a nice clear view. now with that said again the further north you go you have some rain to deal with but along with this the humidity is ramping up for everyone no matter your cloud cover. for tomorrow as well as

saturday, yes, i wouldn't call it oppressive certainly but you'll definitely notice that it's feeling a little steamier out there and much more of a taste of august as we approach the upcoming weekend saturday most especially. that's any other not keeping folks from heading to the shore. looks like overall good beach weather. looks like high tide is about to come in or has already come in. as we take you further to the north at brodheadsville where you could end up with rain later on this evening. so we'll need to keep an eye on that. no he notice that sun angle helping to keep things toasty. 79 is what it feels like in brodheadsville in mid october. not like we've never seen it but we're used to a high of 70 even in the city on this particular day so it is already well above average. down the shore you're flirting with 80. that's the ac airport. probably cooler at the immediate coastline but you get the idea. now let's look at the seven day. i think you'll see probably

the most slightest of showers tomorrow, sunday, limited sunshine and monday is when nate's moisture starts to arrive and that's when we could get a good soaking. >> thanks katie. >> well, one of adventure aquarium sea turtles is being released off the shore of the carolina coast. east fall the aquarium welcomes a new wrestling hatch ling from north carolina and helps the baby to grow stronger for a year. if you want to see darwin before he leaves the aquarium will be hosting a special sea turtle sendoff party this weekend.
