good morning from the studio 257 newsroom at cbs news headquarters in new york. i'm meg oliver in for anne-marie green. investigators are looking into whether las vegas gunman stephen paddock had staked out other places for attacks. they said they would support restrictions on bump stocks. that's the device paddock used to turn his rifles into fully automatic weapons. seth lemon has more. good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. the heart break has many of them looking. republicans and democrats on capitol hill seem to agree on at least one point and it seem there could be swift movement on

new gun legislation. mourners in las vegas lit candles for charleston hartfield overnight, the off-duty officer killed in the las vegas shooter. 58 advices line the las vegas strip, a tribute to all of those killed at the concert by stephen paddock. investigators are looking into what led the 64-year-old to open fire. officials say he may have had his eyes on other large outcoor events with large crowds. >> until they can actually complete this investigation, we're not going to know what was on his mind. >> the massacre in las vegas has some republicans here on capitol hill open to the idea of banning the piece of equipment the gunman used to make his semiautomatic gun fire like a fully automatic one. senator dianne feinstein has already introduced the

legislation that would ban the import and sale of bump stocks. house speaker paul ryan says congress should consider the idea. >> fully automatic weapons have been outlawed for many, many years. this seems to be a way of going around that. >> on thursday the nra also signaled its support. and now australian police are helping the u.s. into the investigation of the shooter's girlfriend. they say she was born in the philippines but she moved to australia and became a citizen after marrying a man there years ago. meg? >> seth lemon in washington for us. thank you. while it remains unclear why stephen paddock started shooting at a las vegas concert, it's clear he planned the attack for some time. jeff pegues has more on his other potential targets. >> reporter: more than a month before the attack on-stephen paddock booked room at the blackstone hotel in chicagole it

overlooked the lollapalooza festival in august, but paddock never checked in. he also booked rooms for a different festival in las vegas and around fenway park. some of the information is coming from searches from his online tinkt and other electronic devices. police are in contact with people with him before the shooting including a woman at the mandalay bay casino. he acquired 33 weapons from four states and why his car contained ammunition, fertilizer, and tannerite, a powerful explosion as this youtube demonstration shows. why a physician yafixation with thousands of people?

mental state and any indications that he could become violent. this morning tropical storm nate is off the coast of honduras. it's headed toward the gulf of mexico and expected to reach the us gulf coast over new orleans over the weekend. nate is blamed for at least 22 death. the state has declared in louisiana. hollywood power broker harvey weinstein charged "the new york times" with reckless reporting after the times reporting he sexually harassed women for decades. weinstein has taken a leave of absence from his company. elaine quijano has details. >> reporter: the sexual allegations against harvey weinstein stretch back 30 years with some as recent as 2015, according to "the new york times." one of his accusers, actress ashley judd told the paper that two decades ago that he made

multiple sexual advances at a beverly hotel, asking if he could give her a massage or watch her take a shower. she thought, how do i get out of the room as fast as possible without alienating harvey weinstein. the times says eight women say he engaged in inappropriate behavior, that included being nearly naked, requiring them to be present while he bathed or repeatedly asking for a ma salk or initiating one himself. he's released at least eight confidential settlements with women. the paper says most received $80,000 to $150,000. in a written statement to the times, weinstein said, o quote, came o of the '60s and '70s when the work behavior was different.

i appreciate how the behavior in the past caused pain and i'm sincerely apologize for it. his resume includes hits like "pulp fiction," "goodwill hunting." he said "the new york times" had published false and defamatory statements about harvey weinstein adding we're preparing the lawsuit now, all proceeds will be donated to women's organizations. ahead on "cbs this morning," we speak with "new york times" correspondent and cbs news contributor, jodie canter, one of the reporters who spent four months investigates the weinstein story. the trump administration is finalizing the new immigration policy to deal with thousands of young immigrants covered by the deferred act of coverage.

issued apology of herself. for racial slurs she made four years ago. "the wall street journal" reports russian hackers stole nsa data on u.s. cyber defense. back in 2015 hackers reportedly working if the russian government stole details of how the u.s. penetrates foreign computer networks. they also accessed how the u.s. defends against cyber attacks. the hackers targeted an nsa contractor who took the classified material home and put it on his personal computer. the "los angeles times" says california has become a sanctuary state in a rebuke of president trump policy. governor jerry brown signed legislation yesterday extending protections for immigrants living in the u.s. illegally. the bill limits who the police can hold, question, and transfer

at the request of federal immigration authorities. it goes into effect january 1st. "the new york times" reports on the justice department's ruling that civil rights law doesn't bar transgender discrimination. yesterday attorney general jeff sessions says the law bars workplace discrimination between men and women but does not extend to gender identity. the rule reverses boston street corporation agreed to pay $5 million to settle federal allegations that it paid female executives less than their male colleagues. the company says it disagrees with the allegations. still to come, you'll have to pay more for your netflix show. we'll show you how the video streaming service is raising

stock exchange with that and more. good morning, meg. the government releases its report on job growth today, a number that usually drives the market. many economists expect the report to show hiring fell from the previous month. the dow jones rose 113 points, the s&p gained 14 point, its longest winning streak in four years, and the nasdaq finished 50 points higher, all closing at record highs. amazon is delivering its own delivery service. the service started two years ago in india. it would ship two-day on more products. amazon is preparing to expand the service to the u.s. that's according to bloomberg. the corona beer brand is expanding. constellation is introduced corona premier. premier contains 90 calories.

our top story this morning, investigators are looking into weather las vegas gunman stephen paddock scoped out other targets in las vegas, chicago, an maybe boston before killing at least 58 country music fans on sunday. in a rare concession the national rifle association said it would support regulating so-called bump stocks, the device paddock use to make his gun fully automatic. top government officials are also on board. >> we all know fully automatic weapons are illegal and is this a big gap that needs to be closed and how do we close it.
