coast and it's moving quickly. we're tracking this storm. good evening, i'm natasha brown. thanks so much for joining us. residents in the central gulf coast area are waiting now to see exactly where hurricane nate heads next. the effects of the storm are just starting to be felt in some areas. courtney, has the very latest from gulfport, mississippi. >> reporter: hurricane nate record ashore as category one hurricane in the mouth of mississippi river saturday night. powerful storm with 85 miles an hour winds has south mississippi in its crosshairs. >> this is nighttime storm, nighttime storms kill people. >> reporter: mississippi governor bryant warned of 11 to 13-foot storm surge in some areas. >> this is a big storm moving in hurry. >> reporter: water is rising and streets are flooding in bay st. louis. all eyes right now are on the water here in gulfport. nate's potentially deadly storm surge could do the most damage. >> that's what concerns me is

the surge. >> yeah. >> reporter: hundreds of people weren't taking any chances. they filled up sand bags ahead of the storm's arrival. >> we don't want what happened with katrina to happen with one of these parish. >> reporter: a water spot was spotted in orange beach alabama. >> with hurricane at nights we season storm surges and high probability of tornadoes and wind damage. >> reporter: nate is the fourth latest storm to hit united states in less than two months. court tee, cbs news gulfport, mississippi. >> meteorologist lauren casey is watching nate as hurricane smashes into the gulf coast tonight. she's life in the weather center right now tracking the storm as it spins and churns over mississippi and new orleans as well. lauren? >> thanks natasha. we can see storm surge as high as 11 feet that is going to be a concern with hurricane nate has made one landfall and nearing a secondary landfall likely along the mississippi coastline so here's the center of circulation

of hurricane nate or the eye of the hurricane right about here. so just offshore of the louisiana there's that eye wall just about to make its push on shore in the mississippi area. still a category one hurricane as of the latest advisory from the national hurricane center which just disseminated a few minutes ago. winds at 85 miles per hour motion off to the north at 20 miles an hour. very fast moving storm. at one point it was moving at about 28 miles per hour forward speed today and that is the fastest on record for a gulf hurricane. it will continue to move that northerly motion and then as we head into the day tomorrow, weakening to tropical storm then moving up into the tennessee valley. eventually becoming extra tropical as it nears the northeast. but it is going to enhance our atmosphere and provide us with a pretty healthy rain chance all is quite though right now as we get live look at center city philadelphia. but looks like we're going to have soggy start to the work week because of nate and we'll talk more about that in your full eyewitness forecast in just

few. natasha. >> lauren thank you very much. philadelphia corner store owner meantime critically injured during a shooting in mantua. but thanks to neighbor that woman is still alive. "eyewitness news" reporter anita oh has more on the good samaritan who jumped in to help. >> she's selfless. >> reporter: that's how neighbor describes the 48-year-old woman who owns freddie grocery in mantua. now a gunshot victim in critical condition at penn presbyterian medical center. >> if whoever needed something so badly, all they had to do was ask her. but to do this, this is ugly. this is ignorant. this is unnecessary. report roar philadelphia police say around 8:30 friday night, 30 minutes before the corner store what close for the night at least one gunman shot the woman in the back and neck. a neighbor called 911 after walking into buy cigarettes and seeing the store owner bleeding unable to speak. >> think this is someone from the area that goes in there and thinks they're going to have an easy time of get something money at the end of the night, but obviously, at some point fired the gun critically wound

thinking person changing these people's lives four ever. >> reporter: investigators are reviewing surveillance video. they believe that the motive was rob appreciate although they say it doesn't appear anything was taken. sandy smith former paramedic lives neck to the store on the 3400 block of fairmount avenue. she says she was bringing her dogs back inside when she heard someone yell for help. >> my poor dog, i threw my dogs into the house, ran into the store. there was this pool of blood on her chest. report roar smith says she had likely just missed seeing the shooter and quickly jumped in to action until paramedics could arrive. >> until they pulled me off of her and put direct pressure on her i wasn't moving from her side. >> reporter: anyone with information is asked to call southwest detectives. in west philadelphia, anita oh, cbs3 "eyewitness news". also tonight a warning for students at university of delaware. newark police say a man arrested earlier this week for allegedly harassing students on campus has now been reported missing. 27-year-old david tie mass was last seen in newark early this morning driving a damaged brown

mini van. he's now bald. he no longer looks like. he mass made statements that cause concern for himself and others. he has no affiliation witness university. if you see him contact police right away. >> a search for missing elderly woman in toms riff ended tragically. 79-year-old martha hess was found dead in a wooded area within the holiday city senior community this morning. she had been missing since thursday. authorities do not believe foul play is involved. and power has been restored to a neighborhood in camden county tonight after a car struck a utility pole. this crash happened just after midnight on white horse pike near egg harbor road in berlin. you can see the pole and some downed wires there blocking the roadway. no word on the condition of the driver or what caused this crash. and still no word on what sparked a quick-moving fire that destroyed a home in middletown delaware county today. flames broke out at a home on the 300 block of south new middletown road at about

3:00 this afternoon. take look there. you can see the flames and smoke pouring out of that home. firefighters were on that scene for about two hours. luckily no one was injured. now police in london rule out terrorism after a car slams into group of people in a popular tourist area. it happened earlier today outside the natural history museum. 11 people were hurt. but luckily no one was killed. officials are calling eight road traffic accident. authorities say one man was detained at the scene and he has not been charged. massive gas explosion lit up the sky in the capitol of ghana tonight. officials say it was second blast that left a number of casualties. the gas filling station is near a transport terminal also some university haas stills. officials say it's too early to know exactly how many people died. to the very latest now in las vegas vice-president mike pence and mrs. pence visited the memorial site for the 58 victims killed in the mass shooting on

sunday. the second family brought flowers to lay at the crosses of the deceased. the two were met with applause as they departed the site. 58 doves were also released just outside of las vegas city hall after the vice-president said a prayer for all of the victims. >> united in our grief, united in our support for those who have suffered and united in our resolve to end such evil in our time. may god bless the fallen, the injured and their precious families and may god bless america. >> as for the gunman responsible for the tragedy lavas gas police and fbi are still working trying to figure out a motive behind the violence. now the city of philadelphia is certainly remembering the victims of that mass shoot tonight. hundreds of folks turn out for a vigil at the cathedral basilica of saints peter and paul. center with what was very emotional event i'm certain. alicia. natasha, so many went there with heavy hearts they are still reeling from the sunday night's mass shooting. they prayed and hope the prayers get to the victims in vegas and their families. ♪ >> reporter: red candles lit in the cathedral base of saints peter and paul in physical. 58 of them one by one lit in the basilica on the communion rail. each one a burning memory of each life lost last week in las vegas. >> the lord -- >> this mass special focus on sunday's mass shooting that has become the worst in american history. nearly 60 are dead, hundreds more shot and injured. and so many families forever changed. >> what happened was just horrible what happened to all those people and all those parents who out of the children. >> reporter: christine baker visiting the philadelphia area from south carolina heard of

5k race kicked off it was created to help shed light on the opioid crisis. the pink elephant 5k race in its second year. and the fifth annual miles for my grain walk and run was also held today. lovely refreshing site there. >> yes. >> still warm out, right. >> yeah. before is it going to get eventually i'm sure temperatures are going to drop. >> things will fall back in line. so warm today. unseasonably warmth. humidity as well. we had nice breeze but definitely doesn't feel like october. you don't want that pumpkin spice latte on day like today. >> frapuccino. >> frapuccino it is. we got to 84 degrees our high temperature today in philadelphia. our normal high temperature, 70. so well beyond that. we started off very mild as well at 65 degrees. we should be down at 52. temperatures right now still very warm and still up above our normal high temperature for the today. 74 in allentown. we have 73 degrees in wilmingt wilmington. 75 in philly. 72 in wildwood and also elevated those dew points. you feel that humid factor dew points in the middle 60s and low 70s. so we're talking summer like humidity in command right now. getting a life look at rehoboth beach. people, couple people still out on the boards enjoying nice

saturday evening, nice day down the shore. the weather pattern is going to turn a little bit more unsettled as we head into the next couple of days as we contend with the remnants of hurricane nate but storm scan3 right now quiet conditions though we will start to see the cloud deck increasing throughout the overnight period and then up wind we have a cold front draped across portions of the midwest and then of course eyes focused on hurricane nate down along the gulf coast as the cold front continues to move eastbound it will pick up that moisture in association with nate and drag it right into our backyards so for tomorrow we'll see enhanced moisture in the wave scattered showers and maybe even a thunderstorm tomorrow. main soggy day will be period of rain on monday with remnants overhead and expect some of those heavy tropical like downpours so we certainly could see ponding on the roadways on monday. and potentially localized flooding. we haven't had measurable rainfall in philadelphia and in about two and a half weeks but yeah have the shower or storm in the forecast for tailgating.

the birds versus the birds. good birds, lame birds. 79 degrees warm at kickoff feeling summer like once again tomorrow. future weather showing us as we head throughout the overnight period, clouds hanging aid rou round. few showers developing late especially west of i-95 and potential to see some scattered showers or even thunderstorms on an october morning. throughout the day we again could see scattered shower and storm activity not going to be a washout but do have backup plan for outdoor plans tomorrow as we head into sunday night we'll see some more activity flaring up again especially west of i-95 and then as we head into monday, could see maybe a dry monday morning commute but the bulk of that moisture will start to move in during the day on monday. overspread the area. see pockets of heavier rainfall potentially imbedded thunderstorms as we deal with the remnants of nate on monday. for tonight pretty quiet, warm breeze, 73 with a chance of a shower late. for tomorrow, scattered showers and a thunderstorm possible including during the morning

hours. little bit of a breeze once again and high temperature well above our average at 80 degrees. we keep things warm and humid as we head into early next week. 79 degrees that's the day we deal with nate on columbus day but still warm and even into tuesday as we start to dry thing out we're at 83 degrees. but eventually these temperatures break down and become more seasonal as we head towards the end of the week though it looks like we could have cloudiness around because of an easterly wind off the ocean thursday and friday. but some cooling in the long range but overall it look like we're in this warm stretch for little while. >> thank you very much, lauren. appreciate that. coming up next in sports the flyers are back on the ice and can the eagles keep up the momentum? muss off to the races. we'll show you barclay latest heisman moment.

four game road trip against the ducks in anaheim california trying to defeat the ducks for the first time in nearly six years. the orange and black got on the board quickly. ivan with the goal here in the first and rookie nolan patrick got his first assist in the national hockey league. a few minutes later the ducks scored right now this game is tied at one in the second peri period. now to football. eagles take on the arizona cardinals at the linc tomorrow. fans are loving the birds fast start but they remember last year. doug pederson squad wept three and zero but slipped to seven and nine finish. this year the eagles begin the season three and one and are coming off a couple of close wins. immediate season says there's a clear difference, though, from the 2016 campaign. >> even though we won those games, it covered up a lot of mistakes that we made in those games. offensively defensively in the kicking game. i think this year the guys are playing probably a little more confident. they're learning how to finish. the excution is better.

caleb asked casey with a clever science that reads, roses are red, violets are blew your house flooded, mine did too. they left by boat, so did casey's family. both families can tickled bite invitation. >> first i didn't see the sign i just saw he was asking me so i said yes and then i read it again and i started laughing so hard. >> why cry any more when you can laugh about it? >> yeah. >> like got to find some humor in it. >> all right. great attitude to have. both families are still in the recovery stages living in the top floors of their gutted homes. as for caleb and casey they're just friends. their parents told them that neither can date until their college years so they've got some time. we'll be right back.

welcome back everyone. final toll night a woman nearly 70 years old has earn the nickname of soaring sky grandma inspiring millions of folks after she took up the sport of powered para gliding at the age of 59. lee from northeast china isn't letting age keep her feet on the ground. she got into the daring sport after her husband passed away and she retired. she said despite series of bad falls, she stuck with it, she became the oldest woman in asia to brave the skies. wow. >> kind of inspiring.
