weeks. today is sunday october 8th good morning i'm jan carabao. we will check your forecast in just a moment but first latest on nate, correspondent courtney is live in biloxi miss sip think morning where the storm made land fall overnight. courtney, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, jan well, sun's coming up and crew s are getting a better look at the damage. what we are seeing is sand in the road, rocks in the road, police are telling us there are light poles in the road, that there are piers that flew off the beach in the road, you talk about power, 100,000 people are without power, here in miss sip anal bam a and florida but good news, i just saw a truck go down the street , so they said they were going to do this. they will work to restore that power as quickly as possible, jan. >> now courtney you did a whole lot of reporting in the aftermath of harvey in houston how would you compare this storm with the storms we have

just seen roll through. >> reporter: no comparison to harvey, to irma, i was than the there for maria but not to maria i assume either. this cast a category one, it moved fast, it didn't sit on top of the city and pour down 50 inches of rain like dit in harvey. this was a fast moving storm. people along the gulf coast were prepared. they got sandbags, they boarded up their homes, they heated the warnings. i really see no comparison to harvey or to irma. >> we have heard that storm surge was the biggest concern, how has flooding been this morning. >> reporter: this morning it has receded but, overnight, probably around one or 2:00 in the morning right here in biloxi right here on casino row, it is where we saw most flooding from storm surge. those hotels right there they took on water because they are

very close to the gulf, and that water came rushing in just like they were warned it would. they actually closed down these casinos at 5:00 yesterday evening. this was the area men to have storm surge and they were right on about that. >> all right, courtney, thanks very much for your coverage, live from biloxi, miss sip think morning. well, back here at home now lets get a check of our forecast. here's meteorologist chelsea ingram in the weather center. so we are already seeing rain but that is not associated with this storm. >> that is right. right now we will get rain associated with what i'll call tropical rain storm nate and could be quite heavy at times and speaking of nate i want to give you latest update from the national hurricane center. we will show you quick look at nate first on the map, nate has significantly, weakened, even compared to the updates earlier this morning. light now winds of 45 miles per hour, as of the 8:00 o'clock update and national hurricane center and

moving so quickly off to the north/northe at 23 miles per hour. it will continue to weaken throughout the day-to-day but coming up a remnant low as we head into monday and that is where we can see rain associated with nate moving into our forecast region. storm scan three shows rain we are dealing with we had a batch moving through earlier and we have a little bit more light rain we are dealing with throughout the morning hours. bets chance of rain is during first half of the day, not to say we could not see a shower this afternoon. it cannot be ruled out. seventy-four in philadelphia. 73 degrees in wildwood. 74 degrees currently down the shore in atlantic city. here's what you can expect morning showers, 73 degrees as we get out the door. seventy-five by noon time. people heat up to 79 in the afternoon. another hot one out there but we have fall-like weather on the way. >> who said it was fall, chelsea. >> no. >> thank you. in other news today one person is sent to the hospital after a house fire in

northeast philadelphia. this fire happened on the 3,000 block of traymont street crew where is able to get that fire under control there just after six credit 15 this morning. it nights clear how bad think that person is injury. fire investigators are trying to figure out what may have sparked the flames. three people are without a home after an overnight fire this fire broke out just before 1:00 this morning, in the 4400 block of winddate street in philadelphia's holmesberg section. now fire spread to several surrounding homes, one fire fighter was hospitalized with minor injury and then neighbors there lived nearby said they could feel the heat. >> melted the panels on the houses, and it was hundred feet or more, we even felt the heat in our house all the way from over here. >> fire fighters, were able to get the flames there under control in just about an hour, the fire displaced three people, it is not yet clear what may have sparked this

fire. another overnight fire to tell but now this time at a town home complex in winslow township camden county. fire fighters were called to medford court in sicklerville right around 2:30 this morning crews were able to get this fire under control in 30 minutes. a family of five made it out of their home safely. red cross is assisting them. no word what may have started this fire. well, police are still looking for the gun man who shot a corner store owner. meanwhile that owner recovers in the hospital today. shooting happened on friday night, at freddie grocery in mantua. that knits 3400 block of fairmount avenue. now officers say that the 48 year-old store owner was shot just before closing time, a neighbor, former paramedic, heard someone yell for help so she ran to the scene to help the victim. >> they pulled me off of her and put direct pressure on her whoever needed something so badly all they had to do was ask her but to do this, this is ugly, this is ignorant,

this is unnecessary. >> now police say the motive was likely robbery but does not look like anything was taken. at last check the store owner was in critical condition at penn presbyterian. police are now reviewing surveillance video. in london now police say a car crash that injured at lee 11 people was a traffic accident not a terrorist attack but as roxana saberi reports the crash raised fears of terrorism following several attacks in britain this year. >> reporter: in a country on edge after several recent terror attacks a crash in the one of the london's busiest tourist areas spark a swift response. >> simon, says that the car ran into pedestrians and his cab, outside the natural history new seem. >> three or four guys dragged him out on the floor and came out and then police came. >> reporter: this video posted on social media shows a

getting opinion to the ground. dozens of armed officers soon flooded the area and corded it off. >> i was having dinner in a restaurant by the corner and i saw police cars and ambulances go by. >> police say get down, get down and they bring us here. >> reporter: police say car jumped curve and collided with pedestrians. lon on's ambulance service said it treated 11 people for injuries, none life threatening. authorities later determined that the incident was what they called a road traffic collision, not related to terrorism. the crash sparked fears because it followed five attacks blamed on terrorism so far this year in britain, three involved vehicles. the terror threat set at severe, authorities think another attach is highly likely but after police determined saturday collision was not an act of terrorism the london mayor said for londoners and visitors planning to visit our excellent musicians and attractions in the area please be assured they will be opened as usual tomorrow n new york

never too spoiled a very cute shop here in the olde city district. it is a place i find myself in for quite often for personal reasons but today is more professional. this is renee, the owner, thanks for being here with us today. what do these events mean for small businesses like yours. >> everybody gets a lot of exposure today, lot of people come to olde city. i know on my street down third , everybody has worked hard to put their best foot forward so everyone should come out and see that. >> reporter: when somebody walks into this store is there such a feel here very unique, what are you offering here inside and also in your tents outside. >> it will be more bohemian today, our store will be more geared toward soft, we have added holiday, we have added lingerie, we have everything. we have gifts, clothes, little bit of everything for everyone that has always been our thing >> never too spoiled has been opened for three years now. why did you decide to come here in olde city. >> we believe in philadelphia, we love it too.

30 minutes. checking weather now olde city fest looking for a big crowd, i know they said they had rain last year with you they do expect a lit built on have rain this year. >> a couple of showers but any day is a good day to do shopping. >> they have tents set up. >> exactly. a couple of showers in the forecast today not a wash out which is good news, and in fact, when you compared today verse tomorrow, tomorrow is when we will see the heavier and more substantial rain, a live look at storm scan three shows we have had a couple of showers, man to have through center city philadelphia, county, earlier today and now pushing off to the west. we have had moderate rainfall near trenton area and we will show i line of showers that will continue to track toward thee and this is what will cause a file showers throughout the first half of the day and then he even this afternoon we will have a risk for shower but better chance will be during part one of the your sunday, so this is all associated with the frontal boundary impacting us today, tomorrow we will be dealing with the remnants of the nate

which is, of course, located down to the south creating some extremely heavy downpours and portions of the panhandle of florida as well as, alabama look at this heavy rainfall swat of rain from the gulf of mexico. we have a tornado threat down in those areas this morning. here's latest information from the national hurricane center 8:00 o'clock update shows a weakened nate. now earlier this morning update shows that it had winds of 07 miles an hour that has how much it has weakened now down to 45, still moving very quickly, but to the north/ north east at 23 miles an hour and as it continues to interact with land it weakens becoming a remnant low by the time it will bring thaws rain chance as we head into monday. 74 degrees in philadelphia mid zero seven's in millville. low to mid zero seven's. seventy-three wildwood. seventy-four in atlantic city. seventy-four allentown. upper 60's in mount pocono. future weather will show how

things trend throughout the next couple of hours this morning is our best chance to see those showers across the region. then by the afternoon notice how the line kind of falls apart. we have a spotty shower possible here and there even into this evening, but generally it will be a quieter compared to what we are dealing with throughout the morning hours today but plenty of cloud around and then here's that swat of rain that moved through on monday we're talking heavy downpours especially during the day, and on monday afternoon. here's what you can expect again from philadelphia all the way to the poconos, we will have that chance for showers 79 degrees that high temperature here in town. seventy-one down the shore. poconos we're talking mid zero seven's. either way it does not feel like fall out there for the game today kick off time 1:00 o'clock. 76 degrees for that temperature. it will be steamy. we will wrist fork a shower around enduring the game time. you're witness weather seven day forecast 78 degrees for columbus day. steamy with rain. sun and included, on tuesday

84 degrees. still warm but finally feeling more like fall once we get to thursday, back to you. >> chelsea, thank you. 8:17. time to check road. lets go over to amanda mueller in the cbs-3 traffic center. good morning. >> in new jersey we have an overturned vehicle on the turnpike southbound side. we have several several overturned vehicles because roadways are really wet so take it easy g news is accident is on the shoulder, it looks like, traffic is getting by all lanes and as you can see it is causing major slow downs as there as drivers made their way by. we are taking a live look at 95 at cottman avenue where we had a major accident. hard to see because of the rain but emergency crews and ambulance just left the scene moments ago. two left lanes blocked but we are seeing low volume on the majors so luckily no residual delay at all. also the accident on the schuylkill expressway eastbound approaching girard avenue where there was another overturn vehicle blocking two

good morning everyone i'm jan carabao just about 8:30, lets start off with meteorologist chelsea ingram live on the cbs-3 sky denning with eyewitness weather. unfortunately a glummy start today. >> it is warm, muggy out here, we're dealing with some drizzle, right now in center city. we have had light rain that moved through, and, we will have another round of showers pushing its way through. lets go to storm scan three threats look at that line of showers, swinging through our

region, and, start tour day a very wet morning, across the delaware valley, and, then it looks like we could have more rain actually as we head into tomorrow. unfortunately today not as beautiful as what we dealt with throughout the day yesterday. 74 degrees in philadelphia we have 74 down the shore in wildwood. 74 degrees also in atlantic city. here's what you can expect, some showers around this morning 9:00 a.m. temperatures in the mid 70's. seventy-five by noon time. we will have a shower possible but the better chance will go and come during earlier part of the day and then 79 degrees by 3:00 o'clock. i mean where is fall, cool temperatures? i will show you in your full forecast coming up. for now, back to you. >> fall's taking a break and that is okay with me, thanks, chelsea. turning to nate now, nate is now a tropical storm. it was downgraded from a category one hurricane after coming a shore overnight. the storm made a second land fall, in the u.s., outside of biloxi, earlier this morning as a category one hurricane

and it is first hurricane to make land fall in mississippi since katrina in 2005. now the storm had already made land fall in the u.s. last night and came a shore in a sparsely populated area in south east louisiana, no deaths of injuries have been report budd storm has knock out power to thousands of people, along the gulf coast, states of emergency are in effect in lieu san, mississippi, alabama and emergency officials warned bay storm surge there, isolated tornadoes and flooding. to vegas now investigators are still trying to figure out why a gunman opened fire on a concert in las vegas, that shooting happened a week ago today and left 58 people dead, now yesterday, vice-president mike pence spoke at a prayer service in las vegas. he and his wife laid flowers at a memorial for the victim. investigators have begun clearing backpacks and other belongings from the place where that concert shooting took place, terrifies concert

goers left those things behind when the gun fire erupted. meantime people all around the country are remembering victims of the las vegas mass shooting and here, in philadelphia the cathedral basilica of saints peter and paul held a special mass last night. "eyewitness news" reporter alycia nieves spoke with several people there to offer their prayers. >> ♪ >> reporter: candles lit in the cathedral basilica of saints peter and paul in philadelphia, 58 of them one by one lit in the basilica on the commune yan rail, each one a burning memory of each life lost last week in las vegas. >> lord be with you. >> reporter: this saturday's mass had a special focus on sunday's mass shooting, a mass shooting that has become the war in american history. nearly 60 are dead, hundreds more shot and injured, and so many families forever changed. >> it is horrible what happened to all these people and all of these people who

who children. >> reporter: christine baker visiting philadelphia from south carolina heard of this mass for vegas and attended. she like many here came with heavy hearts hoping to get a lift through the power of pray er. >> i believe in god and coming for prayer and to be there for those people who are hurting and hoping that they know that there is people out there that do care about them. >> reporter: part of the pray ers are for the victim and families but also for an end to such senseless tragedies in our country. >> it scares you but at the same time we, as americans, we have to push forward and not be so scared and something need to change to make it so we don't have to be. >> reporter: it has been roughly a week since what has become the worst mass shooting in american history. clearly so many people are still trying to understand how and why this sort of thing keeps happening. in philadelphia, alycia nieves for cbs-3 "eyewitness news".

another way people here in the sit of brotherly love are responding to the mass shooting is by giving blood, i bew local 98 hosted a red cross blood drive at its headquarters in fail's spring garden section yesterday. people turned out by hundreds fulfilling a nationwide need for blood. the blood drive also benefits victims of the recent hurricane, in florida, texas and puerto rico. happening today a celebration of olde city. philadelphia's historic district is showing off everything it has to offer today in olde city fest from its food to its stores to its music. "eyewitness news" reporter anita oh is live this morning. you have been having so much fun. so much to see there, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, jan it is fun, i must say and with every passing minute we are seeing more and more activity as all of these vendors more than 100 of them are starting to get set up for a long day ahead and very exciting day. jim me to talk about that is

joe, executive director of the olde city district. thanks for being here, again joe. >> absolutely. >> lets talk about what is happening behind us. this is very exciting. >> olde city's known for arts and culture. we more galleries then any other neighborhood and we are partnering with the delaware river front corporation which has gave us one of their swann boats and arts, galleries who will have a painting exhibition and exercise on the festival. we are hoping the swann boat will go out in the water next summer. drwc is working on cherry street pier and that will be a public arts space as well. good remind their olde city is a river neighborhood and that the river has arts. >> reporter: thinks so exciting. such a mark of the uniqueness of olde city and this event. what does it mean to have something like this as a festival showing off festival city to day. >> just a wonderful opportunity to show off our arts, culture, our food, independent retailers. our business owners even live in the neighborhood. it is really meaningful to say

come down to olde city, enjoy festival and remember to come here to go out to eat and holidays and to look at art. >> reporter: in the pennsylvania several hours we have shown our viewers what they can expect here from all of the restaurants and vendors but specifically one of the biggest things people can expect can you touch upon the family friendly aspect of it. >> absolutely. we have learned early on that families love to come to this festival. it will be a family fun zone. we also have historic district philadelphia's historic district is participating and line up 10 to 15 of our museum as partners with children's activities with the elfrethal a so, you can dress up in colonial clothes. is there also kid performances , jugglers, stilt walkers we have a fashion show if you are interested in our boutique retailers as well as fashion market played immediately adjacent to the fashion show. when you see runway get to the marketplace and buy things on display on the runway. >> one of the business owners here was telling meal

rittenhouse square gets so much excitement and hype but there are other parts of the city as well that are just as exciting. what is biggest take away you want people to come here today to have. >> i think olde city has something for everyone and these are independently owned businesses. we don't after lot of chains in this neighborhood. these are your neighbors, people you might know, your friend they are working hard to make olde city great and they are working hard to make philadelphia great. >> reporter: very exciting message. a lot of the business owners have, put their business owners here, and, a great event. if you want to come down kick off at 11:00 and will go to 6:00 and free top public and all smaller items like food, drink and local goods that will be all pay as you go. very exciting day. for now in olde city cbs-3 "eyewitness news". and, it is still so much to come, of on cbs-3 "eyewitness news" this sunday
