good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. so far firefighters in northern california have been unable to control a string of 22 catastrophic wildfires. powerful winds are fanning the flames and officials warn the worst is not over. at least 23 deaths are blamed on the fires. 3,500 buildings and homes have been destroyed and more are under way. >> reporter: good morning. that number 23 dead could rise. they're afraid of that. there are a number of reasons for that. so many people are missing still four days into this and, secondly, they even not had a chance to search every home that's burned down. as you mentioned, strong winds are driving this fire and the winds are expected to get

stronger as the day goes on. block after block of santa rosa, california, has been reduced to ash, the wildfires ripping through northern california continue to bush out of control and with high winds in the forecast, officials warn it could get worse. >> there have been fires that just blow through. this has been going on for three days with no resolution. wee just on edge right now. >> reporter: authorities have inned new and wider evacuations as both the number and size of the fires continue to grow. >> it's absolutely devastating. it is heartbreaking. this is crushing. it looks like another planet. >> reporter: of the 600 people reported missing in sonoma county, half have been located. spotty cell service is part of the culprit. police say it's now a work and recovery mission. >> we're trying to get to their house. >> reporter: jessica spent tuesday searching for her mom.

the two were on the phone as she was trying to escape her burning house. >> she was coughing and coughing and i was telling her i love her and she tells me she's going to die, she can't get out of her house and then the phone call drops. >> sadly she texted an ap report that her brother had found her mother's remains among the debris. and across northern california, schools are closed today because of unhealthy air. power is out and the governor jerry brown has called this one of the bofrt natural disasters in california history and that says a lot. back to you. >> thank you very much. greg mills. amid the destruction and fire, we're also hearinger bravery and sacrifice. maria of kpix has a story of one rescue. >> he's saying take my family and go.

so i mean kudos to him, you know. what a guy. >> it's a rescue chp officers pete gavitt and whitney lowe will never forget. >> just a tremendous event. look at his family. >> pepe toe my yeo and their family was relieved as the continues arrived. >> it was really a nightmare up them. we thought we were going to die. >> but that relief soon took a turn when the officers told pepe there was only room for four. he was pushing his son at us saying take my family and go. >> i told him that we were coming back for him, that we weren't going to leash him there. pepe made the decision to stay behind.

his next decision was a call to his oldest child. >> i called my daughter and said if i don't see you again, remember i love you. and that was it. >> the atlas fire was intensifying but just as they promised, the officers returned for pepe. >> thank you for saving my family. >> pepe and his family lost everything but they give their all to the officers. >> we're like who cares about the house. >> well that was maria medina reporting. the scope of the fire and destruction can be seen in these pictures. it's located about two miles from downtown. fire ripped through its heart on monday leaving almost nothing but ash and smoke. santa rosa was among the hardest hit areas. about 8,000 people lived in coffee park and a neighboring suburb. ahead on "cbs this morning," carter ervans is in california

with the very latest on the wildfires. >> on to politics, president trump is expected to sign an executive order on health care that would allow americans to buy stripped down health insurance. he's taking action after congress failed to repeal obamacare. the order would allow small businesses and individuals to join associations to buy health care that would be exempt from some obama requirements such as anim mandatory maternity care. and regarding the tax system part of it would do awow with state and local taxes. that's facing resistance from labor unionis, business groups and republican lawmakers in high tax states like new york and california and a few could scuttle the plan completely. mola lenghi has more. >> we love our great truckers.
