>> ♪ >> live from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia, this is cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> right now on "eyewitness news" a group of white nationalists appear in fairmount park and are met with anti-protesters chanting for them to take their message elsewhere. personnel from the philadelphia sheriff's department doing their part for puerto rico. who is heading to the island to make a difference. good evening, natasha is off tonight. i'm joe holden. we begin with those demonstrations. protesters and counterprotesters making their voices heard. let's get right to "eyewitness news" reporter alycia nieves live in fairmount park with the late defendant details. alycia. >> reporter: well, joe, it was a group of white nationalists who gathered in

fairmount park around 4 o'clock this afternoon. there were about two dozen people with the group. they had coordinate the this gathering with police so out of caution there was a good number of philadelphia police officers present. another party present who you heard just there were upset counterprotesters who surrounded the white nationalist group as they gathered near a statue just along boathouse row. the group gathered near the statue of a european explorer to defend white heritage. counterprotesters denounced the heritage of white supremacy. we cannot share much of the audio. this gathering and counterprotest was laced with profanity. that testy interaction between the two groups went on for about a half hour and there were a few tense moments but police made sure to be a barrier between the white nationalist group and the counterprotesters. authorities also helped divert people around the scene. and as you saw just there

despite some testy moments between the group that gathered and the counterprotesters, police say this ended relatively peaceful. there were no incidents. reporting live along kelly drive, alycia nieves cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> thank you for the latest on that. police are investigating the homicide of a man found stabbed to death in the basement of a northern liberties recording studio. now the discovery was made at superior sound studios at third and willow around 7:30 this morning. detectives say the 30-year-old man was stabbed several times his name hasn't been released yet. police haven't released word on any arrests or a motive. the search is on for the driver wanted in a deadly hit-and-run crash in port richmond much police say a man was struck and killed near allegheny and tulip around two. ooh 30 this morning. an eyewitness says a car drove around a broken down tractor-trailer and may have hit that victim. we are told that car was seen speeding. police continued to investigate this deadly crash.

investigators have identified the body pulled from the schuylkill river near walnut street on thursday. the philadelphia medical examiner says he is 58-year-old philip ritenhaaur and was featured on the reality tv show "shark tank." a bomb scare shut down part of la guardia airport in new york after a passenger threatened a airline worker. the incident happened at 7:15 this morning at the spirit airlines counter. no explosives were found after a check by the nypd bomb squad. charges are pending against the passenger. normal operations resumed there about two hours later. firefighters are gaining ground in their battle against the deadliest wildfires in california history. two of the largest fires are now 50 percent contained. at least 38 people are dead and nearly 6,000 houses and other buildings are destroyed.

cbs news correspondent chris martinez is in the fire zone. >> reporter: from the air, you can see the massive scope of the fires burning through california's wine country. on saturday, gusty winds helped fan the flames of the nun fire near the town of sonoma. embers from the blaze caught this house on fire as firefighters worked to put out the flames a shed nearby melted and collapsed before our eyes. more than 9,000 firefighters are battling more than a dozen large fires across the state. officials say overall, they're making great progress. >> this is the day that we have prayed for since sunday night. >> reporter: thousands of people remain evacuated from their homes this weekend and officials say they will not allow them to return until the fire danger subsides. >> let me get her feet. >> reporter: that danger on full display in this body cam video showing first responders rushing to get people to safety last sunday night.

local officials say they're still working to assess all the damage. >> the count stands at 5,700 damaged and destroyed structures. >> reporter: at least 20 investigators are working to figure out what caused the fires. but they say it could be weeks before they have any answers. chris martinez for cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> the husband of york county's caitlin coleman is talking about their family's five years in captivity by the taliban. now home in canada joshua boyle described how they were rescued with the help of a pakistani government on wednesday. >> the army got between the criminals to make sure that the prisoners were safe mine family was safe and they ran like cowards and this is proof enough to me that the pakistanis are doing everything to their utmost. >> boyle and coleman were

abducted while traveling in afghanistan in 2012. the couple had three children while in captivity. a day after announcing that federal government will end subsidies for health insurance, the president took to twitter to further his case to dismantle the affordable care act. the president tweeted health insurance docs which have gone through the roof during during e obamacare years plunged after i ended their dems windfall. he went on to say very proud of my executive order. millions of people benefit. the government has paid billions to reduce obamacare costs for more than 6 million low income americans. well, former trump chief strategist is predicting the president will easily be elected in 2020. steve bannon spoke at the values voters summit in washington today. >> i hate to break the news to brayden carter and the folks -- good folks of vanity fair but yes, president trump is not only going to finish this term, he's going to win

with 400 electoral votes in 2020. >> vanity fair there quoting two sources saying bannon believed president trump would not pleat his first term. bannon accused the republican establishment of trying to sabotage the president's agenda. former democratic presidential nominee hillary clinton took a swipe at president trump in great britain today. she spoke at swan university in wales. >> instead of bringing people together, we have leaders who stoke our division, try to distract us with controversy after controversy and undermine free speech and the press. >> the university presented clinton with an honorary doctorate for her work to help families and children. it has renamed its college of law the hillary rodham clinton school of law. more local help for puerto rico is on the way.

>> russian progress cargo ship blasted off from kazakstan heading to the international space station carrying nearly 3 tons of propellant water and crew supplies. if all goes well the progress will fly a two day 34 hour orbit rendezvous catching up with the space station early monday. saturday's launch marked the last progress flight of the year. actress eva green has joined the growing number of women making allegations against harvey weinstein. the former bond girl told variety magazine she was left shocked and disgusted by an encounter she says she had with the media mogul in paris. she told the magazine she got away from weinstein during a business meeting when he "behaved inappropriately." in the wake of those allegations now, mounting against the former producer, the academy of motion picture arts and sciences board of governors voted overwhelmingly

to expel harvey weinstein. the board met this morning. it oversees the organization that hosts the oscars consisting of 54 hollywood power players. the producers guild of america also planned to meet today to consider weinstein's status. the people of puerto rico are still struggling to survive following the devastation of hurricane maria. this was the line in the town just 50 miles from san juan. people are waiting for their water rations and clean bags of ice from the local water treatment plant. it scenes like these that have inspired local people to continue relief efforts. to live there and deal with all of this -- all the devastation of the hurricane. >> reporter: inspector michael, deputy sheriff's officers each have ties to puerto rico. >> they're people that need our help and those are our people. those are american citizens that need us. >> reporter: from philadelphia they watched helplessly as hurricane maria ravaged the island and have still been unable to reach some family members there. >> words cannot explain the devastation. >> reporter: after seeing that footage inspector bastone the highest ranking hispanic deputy went directly to sheriff jewel williams who immediately gave the green light to send a team. >> these deputy's input could save a life. >> reporter: they say this trip would not be possible without support from the sheriff's office and the american red cross which is helping to make sure that when they're on the ground the supplies can get to the people and the places that need them the most. to prevent further burdening an island already lacking food and water each will be packing what they can.
