- hi, i'm joan lunden. just 20 years ago, type 2 diabetes in children was unheard of. in fact, it used to be called adult onset diabetes, but not anymore. inactivity, being overweight, and a family history are all things that could lead to a diabetes diagnosis. if you feel that your family is at risk, then the first step to prevent type 2 diabetes is to make over the family meal. so, joining us is dr. ann albright, director of the cdc's division of diabetes translation, and jennifer stack, a registered dietician from the culinary institute of america. how do you make yummy meals that are still healthy? - one of my favorite tips is a technique i call rub and roast. you take your chicken, you take your meat, you take your fish, even your vegetables, and using a salt-free seasoning blend, there's lots of different flavor profiles available,
6:27 am
rub it all over the meat or the food. put it in a hot oven to cook. it has a lot more flavor, and you don't need to use a lot of salt in preparing it. - so, you just replaced all the salt and the butter and all the oils and everything with another flavor. - and it brings out flavors that we're not gonna get when we're using the butter and the oil to cook. so, i encourage people, save the oil for a little bit of salad dressing that you could put not only on your salad. you could put it over those roasted vegetables. - ann, you've been managing your diabetes your whole life since you were a young child. what happens when you go out to dinner? - well, when you go out to dinner, clearly you're out to have fun and enjoy time, and so, as you're looking at the menu, certainly pick something you enjoy, but absolutely ask to have it prepared in a healthy way. you can have something baked or grilled. you can have some of those sauces and things left on the side, and certainly go ahead and ask for your portion, but have them cut it in half. take the other half and put it in a container to go. you'll have plenty of food and leftovers as well.
6:28 am
- thank you. such great ideas. and the cdc has creative ideas on how you can hack your snack, and you can find them at cdc.gov/diabetestv. we'll see you next time. i'm joan lunden. - [announcer] sponsored by nacdd, with support from the centers for disease control and prevention. visit cdc.gov/diabetestv.
