beginning. missed warning signs. new details about the texas church shooter's troubled past. and twitter is expanding. forget the cap limit of 140 characters. it's now double. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at czech republic bs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. president trump is in china this morning where trade tops the agenda. the president begins a two-day visit amid growing complaints in the u.s. over chinese business practices. the president will also discuss north korea with chinese leaders. he'll ask them to cut financial ties with pyongyang, and before leaving south korea, mr. trump had a message for north korean leader kim jong-un. >> the weapons you are acquiring are not making you safer. they're putting your regime in grave danger.

every step you take down this dark path increases the peril you face. north korea is not the paradise your grandfather envisioned. it is a hell that no person deserves. >> the president speaking to south korean lawmakers said the u.s. will not be intimidated but offered a diplomatic solution if the north would end its nuclear program. now to domestic politics and decisive wins that the party hopes is a precursor to next year's elections. we begin with the close governor's race. ralph northam easily defeated ed gillespie. it wu due in part to his anti-trump sentiment. >> today virginians have answered and spoken. virginia has told us to begin the divisiveness that we will

not condone hatred and bigotry, and to end the politics that have torn this country apart. >> democrats swept all three of virginia's statewide races and wiped out the republicans' overwhelming majority in the state legislature. and new jersey elected former wall street executive bill murphy as its governor. he mentioned president trump by name in his victory speech and made it clear voters sent a message to washington. >> we will stand firm to new jersey's values and push back at the mean winds blowing at us from washington, d.c. >> murphy has no experience as an elected official. he made his fortune at goldman sachs before serving as an

ambassador to germany in the obama administration. democrat danica rome, a former conservative. rome focused jobs, schools, and traffic congestion during her campaign. her opponent bob marshal sponsored a bill that restricted which bathrooms she could use. voters in maine votexpanded. they join 31 states that have expanded care. just released records now that a gunman who opened fire at a texas church had an extensive history of mental ill ps. five years ago kelley escaped from a mental facility. hena doba is here in new york.

good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. his escape from the mental facility is not the only thing that should have alerted red flags. he made death threats and court-marshaled. >> i wish i hadn't taken her that date. >> she's talking about her 16-year-old daughter haley, one of the victims of sunday's church shootings in texas. as more information emerges, so, too, do more questions about how he was able to legally get his hands on gun. in 2012 the civilian escaped from a mental health center where he had been placed by the air force for treatment. from the el paso police department that same year he was scribed as a, quote, danger to himself and other. police said he was attempting to carry out death threats he had made on his military command. a few months later he was

court-marshaled. that was never entered into the database that would have prevented him from buying weapons. >> it's pretty clear the check list we used was not followed by the local office and his fingerprints should have been put into the database and were not. >> two senators tuesday, one democrat and one republican closed a loophole allowing that to happen. >> i think the legislation creates a procedure and clear lines of authority and oversight to fix that problem. >> the pentagon's inspector general is also reviewing the lapsed reports that the pentagon knew for at least two decades about failures to give criminal information to the fbi. >> investigators say the fbi is trying to get into the shooter's cell phone but have yet to access it. they won't say what kind of phone it snies hena doba here in new york. thank you, hena. ahead on "cbs this morning," norah o'donnell talks with david

shulkin about whether there was anything that could have been done. former pitcher roy halladay loved baseball and had a passion for flying. it seems the latter caused him his life. he was killed yesterday when the small plane he was flying crashed into the gulf of mexico. he was one of the first to fly it. don dahler has more. >> reporter: roy halladay's single-engine plane went down in the gulf coast. there was no mayday call and the plane was found in about six feet of water. >> we know roy is a person, a caring husband who loved his wife randi. he loved his two boys tremendously. >> reporter: he was a new but avid pilot often posted pictures on sports media. before retiring from baseball four years ago halladay was known as a dominant pitcher. the two-time cy young pitcher

threw a perfect game in the 2010 seas season and a no-hitter in the postseason that same year. in his 16-year career with the toronto blue jays and philadelphia phillies, he was an eight-time all-star. >> he's a tremendous person that's going be missed. a lot of us grew up watching roy halladay play. i was fortunate enough to sit in the dugout and share a locker with him during some of the best years i had. >> reporter: during his press conference roy halladay talked about how much baseball meant to him. >> it was a tremendous run, an experience i'll never forget. >> reporter: philadelphia phillies released this statement. there are no words to express the loss the family is feeling. roy halladay was 40 years old.
