president pence for his contacts. in his statement he has said, it's extraordinarily painful to en dour these false accusations of treason. he said the actions i acknowledged in court were wrong and i am working to set things straight. my agreement to cooperate with the special interest office reflects in my best interest of my family and country. i accept full responsibility for my actions. we are joined with paula reid outside of the courthouse where flynn entered his plea. >> according to the newly released court documents. mike flynn will testify that
12:20 pm
before he met with the russian ambassador he spoke with the zone i don't remember official of the presidential transition team who he will also testify was with other senior members of the presidential transition team. he says they had a long conversation what if anything he should discuss with the russian ambassador and specifically the russian team told him they wanted him to talk about sanctions and how not to escalate the situation between the united states and russia following sanctions put forth by the obama administration. this is very significant. this takes the ownness off motorcycle flynn and shows this was directed by the president's transition team this. is a valuable piece of evidence for robert mueller for his on going i investigation. >> to be clear, paul a this suggests that flynn was directed by the campaign, possibly the
12:21 pm
president to reach out to russia? >> i want to speak very specifically to the language in the court documents this. is what he's testifying before a judge and told the grand jury. he specifically says senior officials of the presidential transition team, there is no specific mention of the president in this part of the documents. at this point, yes. they are saying he was directed by the president's transition team to have this moating and to specifically discuss sanctions and ways to not escalate the situation between the u.s. and russia -fl. >> paul a this is a very serious charge michael flynn has pleaded too. he's agreed to plead to lying to the fbi while in fact in the white house as national security adviser in january. he was being invest gated for more significant charges, was he not? >> absolutely. sources have confirmed that at least half a dozen witnesses
12:22 pm
have come to federal court to discuss michael flynn's business dealings. specifically the lobbying with turkey and russia. it is showing that there maybe charges against flynn and his son, very serious charges. there are questions about violating federal law talking about u.s. policy. anthony, the special council is willing to overlook that evidence presented the last six to eight months and allow him to plead guiltiy to making false statements. that tells us michael flynn had something very valuable to offer robert mueller. here we see what he was offering. this is significant. it shows this was at the helm of the transition team. >> i want to bring in jeff from the washington bower owe.
12:23 pm
jeff, what does this maybe for the investigation now? >> well that obviously it's preceding and getting closer to the president's inner circle. let me set the scene here. one thing with the plea agreement is how hyper focused investigators are on flynn during the transition and into the white house. keep in mind after he became national security adviser four days after the inauguration, he was questioned by the fbi. then 18 days later he was fired or about 18 days later fired after it was revealed he was compromised. it was the acting attorney ten ral at the time, sally yates, who went to the white house and warned them that investigators felt mike flynn was compromised. he hadn't accurately described his contacts with the russian ambassador. at the time u.s. intelligent
12:24 pm
officials and law enforcement officials had access to the intercepts. the electronic intercepts in which sanctions were discussion even though according to the vice president motorcycle flynn told him that was not the case. so, invest gaters at that time felt he was compromised. this is an important part of the investigation. that period between the transition and the first few weeks in the administration for michael flynn. >> jeff, what did he -- what do law enforcement officials belief in looking at the intercepts for the reason flynn was reaching out to the russians. >> let's go back a year, december 2016, the obama administration was intent in sending a message to the russians, a punishment if you will, for interferin interferind
12:25 pm
meddling in the 2016 election. how did they do that? they felt one step was announcing the sanctions against certain people within the russian government. so, when those sanctions were under mind there were people in the inte intelligence communityd law enforcement community whether shocked because the russian behavior was so unrussian like. in this case that didn't happen. as the intercepts came out people in the law enforcement felt they were being under minded, the obama administration was being under minded. there were officials saying there is one president at a time. they were seeing the inter actions and they were concerned. >> their concern that mr. flynn was being directed by someone
12:26 pm
else? >> that was the suspicion. he wouldn't of done this on his own. i was told that multiple times during that period. they always felt that he was being advised or encouraged to make the contacts. >> i want to bring back paula reid again outside of the federal courthouse where mr. flynn entered his plea today. >> paula, what happens with the conversation with the ambassador. >> i'm reading closely, tiny print, the documents filed by special council this. is what flynn will testify to. he will say immediately after talking about officials he called the russian ambassador and requested russia not escalate the situation between them and the u.s. and respond in a resip owe cal manner. said immediately after the call the transition team wanted to know how it went and wanted an update. he was in constant communication
12:27 pm
with the transition team about his conversations with the russian ambassador and how they went. two days after the conversation with the transition team saying, yes, let's talk about sanctions and a way to tam -p the situation down. you see russian president, vladimir putin released a statement december 30th that russia would not take retaliatory measures to u.s. sanctions this. is incredibly significant. this shows a tight time line and connects vladimir putin's actions with conversations with president trump's transition team. >> paul a what do we know about michael flynn making the decision to cooperate here. when he actually tipped? >> we know there has been a steady parade of witnesses the last six to eight months. a few weeks ago something interesting happened. several witnesses with the public relations firm coming here to testify were told to
12:28 pm
hold off. earlier this week we know flynn's lawyer stopped sharing information about the investigation. we know the lawyers met with special council early this week. it appears they were getting closer to a plea deal over the past several weeks. we know that based on what sources have confirmed to us about what was going on with the grabbed jury and what we have confirmed about flynn not cooperating with the white house. anthony, it appears they were looking for a plea deal. it seems to have closed the deal the past several weeks. >> paula, why do you think he agreed to the plea deal and accepted it? >> it's not only mike flynn under scrutiny but his son mike flynn jr. they were both potentially exposed to the foreign loniing crimes we talked about. when you don't disclose income and work on be half of a foreign government. a incentive to avoid federal prison, there is even more of a
12:29 pm
incentive if your child is potentially looking at a federal prison sentence. based on the evidence we know and the charges that robert mueller could of brought, all of these things come together as an attractive intensive to start talking. >> as paula reid has reported there is evidence that michael flynn was directed by senior officials of the trump team to contact the russians. he has accepted charges of lying to the fbi in january as national security adviser in the trump administration. we want to thank paula reid outside of the federal courthouse and our washington bureau. there will be more on your local news on your cbs station and our 24 hour streaming network cbsn and the cbs evening news. i'm anthony mason, cbs news, new york. >> for news 24 hours a day go to
