this is the cbs "overnight news." hi, welcome to the "overnight news." i'm demarco morgan. firefighters in southern california are scrambling to contain at least three major blazes burning out of control in and around los angeles. hot dry conditions and powerful santa ana wind are feeding the flames. jamie yuccas begins our coverage. >> reporter: they're some of the harshest conditions firefighters have faced in years. extremely dry, powerful winds, roared through ventura county last night. within hours, a 50 acre fire exploded. and the winds haven't let up. this is what firefighters are facing. >> trying to keep this from extending into the whole neighborhood. >> hampering the fight. little or no water pressure on several hillside streets. just can't get water out of

hydrants? >> only a limited amount. only get so much. >> once the water from fire trucks remained out all that remained on several streets were garden hoses. >> no water? >> residents filled buckets. frying to douse hot spots before they reignite. but throughout the day, the fire claimed even more homes. police are going door to door. >> mandatory evacuation in effect. >> warning residents to leave now. >> wind shifted. coming down. four, five houses down. >> time to go. >> it is time to go. >> in a neighborhood we found steven phillips. >> why did you come up here? >> to check on my son's house. >> his son is a fire fighter now on the lines his pregnant wife safely evacuated.

as the the flames came closer. >> you see this. that's -- what's the only thing you can do now? >> just, stay as a family. and you know, and be blessed that you are alive. you can always rebuild. >> the flames got so intense we had to leave. the fate of that fire fighter's home as well as so many others its unknown at this point. the extreme fire conditions are expected to last here through at least, friday morning. >> i'm carter evans about 4500 feet above the fire near los angeles. take a look down below. you can see thick black smoke. this fire 11,000 acres and growing. homes threatened. earlier today at a bigger fire 50 miles north. the fire is in pretty wealthy communities right now. multimillion dollar homes. some neighborhood when you look below they're entirely wiped out a few homes left standing. from the air you get an idea of the size of the fire. growing by the minute.

it exploded overnight by tens of thousand of acres. and there is really nothing to stop it right now. look at that black smoke. that is intense. those are intense fires burning right now. look how some of the homes are standing. you have intense black smoke and flames. right there in the middle. untouched home. unbelievable. look at the flames on that. you can tell how hard the wind is blowing. the smoke is blowing side ways. how dangerous is it to fly in wind like this? >> guy whose fly 100 feet above. getting pushed into the mountainside, tree, gnarly, it's a challenging environment. >> wow, look at this fire here. you can see the flames burning inside the home. looks like a total loss. there are a couple of firefighters there. they're trying to keep the fire from spreading to the car there. but it may be into late. >> now, fire fighters are going to catch a little barack tonight. wind are going to decrease. blowing, 20, 30 miles an hour. gusting up to 50 miles an hour. the forecast hold through friday. with the windiest days, jeff, on thursday and friday. president trump touched off controversy, anoungs the united states is moving the embassy to jerusalem. seth doane has the latest. >> reporter: despite the dire

in the wake of hurricane maria, the exodus from puerto rico continues. in the three months since the storm decimated the island. hundreds of thousand have fled. many found refuge with friend and family in florida. those with no support system are boarding planes and getting out. david begnaud at multiagency resource center at orlando airport. >> when we arrived here at disaster resource kenter first person we saw, mary yeah there on her phone. here with two boys and mother. nay arrived on midnight flietd with no friend or family here and no place to go. they are waiting until 9:00 a.m. when the disaster resource center opens. a one stop shop where she can find everything she needs. here they'll give you help, and they'll give you hope. this couple found hope in this hotel room. this is home for now.
