>> now at 5:00 minnesota senator al franken is leaving congress amid claims of inappropriate contact with would men, but not before taking a few parting shots, at president trump. now franken becomes latest high profile figure to lose his career over sexual misconduct allegations. good afternoon, i'm nicole brewer in for ukee washington. i'm jessica dean. announced he is resigning for office but isn't going away. >> al franken announced his resignation on the senate floor. >> in the coming weeks, i will be resigning, as a member of the united states senate. >> reporter: minnesota democrat was under intense fresh another to step down, faced with a growing list of women accusing him of sexual misconduct. during his announcement, franken pushed back against his accusers. >> some of the allegations against me are simply not true others i remember very differently. >> reporter: franken said he

hoped to clear his name through an ethics investigation but he now realize he he could not be an effective senator during the process. tide turned begins franken when 35 of his democratic collogues called on him to step down. >> we need to draw a line in the sand and say none of it is okay or acceptable and we, as elect leaders should absolutely be held to a higher standard. >> reporter: minute so the's democratic governor will pick someone to fill franken's seat until a special election next year. as for franken he says he is resigning but not giving up his voice. the comedian turned lawmakers has served in the senate since 2008, he is not announced when his last day will be. a pastor in medford, new jersey is under arrest tonight charged with sexually assaulting at lee four children for more than a decade. gave us a brief statement, about the sexual assault, allegations against him, that have upset this community. >> it is a complete outrage. >> reporter: judy parker says almost too much to comprehend a long time pastor in her town medford charged with sexually assaulting four minors. >> women coming forward, women at least are grown up, and can slap the guy, but not children , they are helpless. >> reporter: burlington county prosecutor's office announced the 674 year-old harry thomas was arrested for series of sexual assaults against four minors that span 16 years. authorities won't give detail about the children or tell us if they attend thomas congregation the come live church in medford they say thomas sexually all the sad them while in medford township between 1999 and 2015. one counties aggravated sexual assault. police say he has undisclosed medical facility because he ties ill to go to jail. no one answered the door at tomorrow at's home on queens

prosecutors say that in addition to fatal head injuries an autopsy on the infant found 15 broken ribs. prosecutors also filed charges against jamal bailey of downingtown. he is accused of giving his 10 month-old daughter anti psychotic prescription medication, because she was not a good sleeper. it is not approved for children or infants. a federal judge rules the shooting death of an unarmed man at hands of the former south carolina police officer is second degree murder in the manslaughter. after making that decision judge sentenced to michael slag tore 20 years in prison. the medford native shot walt are scott multiple times in the back as he ran away from a traffic stop back in 2015. slager pleaded guilty in may to violating scott's civil rights and as part of that plea deal dropped state murder charges. two students and gunman are dead following a shooting at as tech high school in new mexico. san juan county operations manager identified gunman as a

student but in the released a name. school is about 900 students was cordond off as authorities cleared the building. teens were taken to the unification center nearby, and state and federal authorities are investigating what led to that shooting. fire fighters are now struggling for a fourth day to get an upper hand on wild fires in southern california. in awe 200 homes have been destroyed, figure that is almost, certain to grow. hundreds of thousands have been evacuated and the fires forced closure of the heavily traveled road like the 101 freeway. kennett craig is in venture, california with the very latest from the fire zone. >> reporter: fire fighters faced a wall of flames early this morning at the thomas fire in ventura county. it is the largest of four wild fires that have been devouring homes, and is now threatening the city of ohai. forecasters warned winds could hit 80 miles an hour today but los angeles officials say that so far, conditions are better

than anticipated. >> the expected high winds from last night were calmer, then we had some projections of. >> reporter: with the fire spreading quickly authorities are issuing new evacuation order every day. >> the fires have forced upward of 200,000 people from their homes, and in some communities like this one in ventura some residents are returning to find their home leveled, and the home next door, untouched. at least 200 homes have burned to the ground, lower sanders has been searching for cherished belongings in the ruble of her shadow hills home >> i found a whole bunch of books, it looks like books and as soon as you touch it, it disintegrated. >> reporter: fires disrupting lives of thousands of people in the los angeles area, some highways are closed and with smoke drifting for miles, dozens of schools are shut down for the rest of the week, as crews fight hard to get the massive blazes under control. kennett craig for cbs news,

ventura, california. and caught on camera a man rescues a wild rabbit from the fire in the side of the freeway. this happened on 101 freeway, man pulled over, jumped out and got that bun toy come toward him and away from the flames. breaking news right now progress in the effort to avoid a government shut down tomorrow, moments ago house passed a bill to fund government through september 22nd. in the meantime lawmakers will try to agree on a long term budget deal, bill now head to the senate which is expected to quickly pass it. with the cold weather now in place there are several chances for snow in the days ahead. meteorologist kate bilo is on our sky deck to tell us about those chances, kate. >> thanks, jessica. we have been watching this potential for snow friday into saturday all week. as we head through today it is more likely that parts will see snow saturday and likely some accumulation depending on where you are. lets start with where you are right now because there are a

few popping up on storm scan three. fast moving snow showers across central pennsylvania. most fizzling before they reach our area up toward poconos chance for stray snow shower this evening and possibly our western suburbs. widening out cold air is causing the snow showers across the northeast but note that is moisture to the south across the deep south, that will be streaming along the coast tomorrow into the weekend and enough cold air in place with temperatures in the 30's and 40's to lead to the potential for some snow. here's what it looks like tonight is quiet, tomorrow moisture looks to stay off shore but watch what happened as we get into saturday. that brush of snow on the coast and even chance that it could move inland. as of right now hypo tension to see snow along the coast, moderate toward city, lower toward north and west. i'll tell you early predictions of just how much snow we could sianni whether it will stick. we will send it back inside to you. >> kate, thank you. eagles are out west continuing to prepare for their game sunday against the rams. >> this will be one of the

now, winds could gust to 60 miles an hour leading to the spread of the fire. now again largest fire creek fire is in ventura county but additional fires could still ignite if anything happens inland that could impact eagles practicing in anaheim and game taking place in los angeles. if we get through today without additional fires the winds will start to decrease, tomorrow into the weekend which would be good news as they try to contain those blazes. locally here we had a nice looking day, just on the cold side. winds gusting to 20 miles an hour at times in palmyra making it feel cold. you can see blue sky, patchy cloud and then really nice looking sunset across the area tonight but we have chance for some snow in our future and that comes over the weekend. right now we have got temperatures in the lower 40's for most, areas, 44 in philadelphia, 39 in allentown, right at freed nothing mount pocono. timing on this system has back off a bit, it is later saturday instead of friday

night. notice a couple snow showers fist untiling our area tonight see them in the poconos but this is what we have to watch out for tomorrow in the weekend. all this moisture heading off companies and brushing coastline and track will determine which area sees snow there is two scenarios. let me show you this one first starting saturday at 6:00 a.m. this keeps most of the moisture off shore but best chance for accumulating snow down the shore and not much inland. that is scenario number one. then it moves saturday evening let me take you to another european model, scenario number two and watch what happens here, snow backs up further in during the day on saturday and that could mean light accumulations even in the city and suburbs with the heaviest possible down the shore. soil temperatures are still very warm so a lot of this will melt on contact but at lee light accumulation especially at the coast and the track will dictate, the impacts further inland. we will keep you posted on that coming up later in the show we will have preliminary accumulation estimates with this system on saturday. for your friday turning cloudy

ground breaking new research that is linking even low dose birth control pills to breast cancer. that is shook could impact 16 million women in the u.s. >> health reporter stephanie stahl is here with what local doctors are saying. >> reporter: lots of reaction. first of all no need to panic. doctors say, perspective is important. harmoneal birth control is still considered an important, safe option for many women. the increased risk for breast cancer is considered very small, but meaningful. the new research found women who took hormonal

contraceptiveses including pills, patches and implantable devices had 20 percent increased risk of breast cancer that translates into one more case of breast cancer a year for every 7700 women. >> i was actually astonished to hear this. >> reporter: doctor jennifer simmons chief of breast surgery at einstein medical women's center says this is first significant research that shows even with relatively lower dosage, there is still a risk. it was fund to be higher the longer that the contraceptives were used. >> women in her 30's if she had been on birth control pills at for whatever the reason, i think that person need to strongly consider why they are on birth control pills and if there is another option, i think that other option should be explored. >> reporter: for many women potential benefits out weigh risk, hormonal contraceptives have been shown to reduce risk of other cancers like ovarian, uterine, and colon cancer. >> so we're not throwing the
