12:00 pm
>> live from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia. this is cbs-3 "eyewitness news ". >> right now on "eyewitness news" at noon, winter is certainly here, another round of snow is hid dollars our way just in time for the weekend. >> and good afternoon, i'm rahel solomon, jim is off this noon. winter weather advisory are set to go into effect for much of the area in the next hour, we have team coverage of the storm, but we begin with meteorologist, katie fehlinger in the weather center tracking the snow, katie, more snow. >> more snow. exactly, yes. another system, rahel, actually just blossoming even w speak, we start things offer, we go right back out to the radar, looking at three hour loop here. you'll notice, that at least in the first couple of hours of that radar loop,ee
12:01 pm
there it is, what you see is how there wasn't even anything to look at couple of hou, now an little burst of snow has blossom on the radar. and it is still a relatively light snow, but starting to show up out there. and with enough time it, will not only over spread the rest of the region, but it is also going to start to stick andaccu. now, relatively quick hittingasr weather advisory, we're going to see take effect, goes into effect and lasts until 9:00p.m. all the countiesn purple included but unless philadelphia cy,e included in oe to it, but it doesn't mean you're not going to see snow. so, here's the general gist. the snow will continue to develop for the next couple of hours anywhere between 3:00 p.m., 7:00 p.m., the heaviest snow expected to fall , than snow will then start to taper off, from west to east, basically, later on this evening, but the key here , really is the timing, it is far less than ideal. specially when it comes to the typical afternoon and evening rush, so, there is likely to
12:02 pm
be a lot of gm's throughout when this snow gets underway, meantime the cold air in place , it is setting l the stage for all of this so little later in the show i'll tell you how much snow you can expect, in your backyard, and also if there are any additional precipitation chances in the seven day, that's later on, rahel. >> thank you. and, remember, you can always get the very latest on our cbs philly weather app, as you can see on your screen, get the latest from the forecast right at your finger tips. >> and, after a ten month investigation, a grand jury is calling for penn state to get tougher on fraternities when it comes to drinking and hazing, the report released follows the death of 19 year old timothy piazza during pledge party in february it, calls on pennsylvania law makers to toughen laws to prevent hazing and under age drinking it, also calls on penn state to regulate drinking. the district attorney says penn state's new rules don't seem effective. >> don't seem truly different from the old one, just seem like re package system like
12:03 pm
the old system, just put on penn state letterhead. and that's what the grand jury is trying to point the same broken. it is not aggressive enough t won't save lives. >so far no comment today from penn state. the university did ban fata data pi in march. >> new jersey march -- man, police say christopher coon caused multi vehicle crash while running from police after stealing from walmart in tullytown bucks county. authorities say his son was in the vehicle and died from his injuries. they say coon abandoned his son and fled from the scene. coon is set to be arraigned today in bucks county. >> dozens of toyota tundra's rumble through philadelphia with one mission in mind, delivering meal to the hungry. now in it 11th year the toyota tundra food drive, 170 tons of food, our greg argos live at citizens bank park where the convoy including 2cbs trucks arrived with food in tow. hi, greg. >> reporter: hey, rahel, exactly right.
12:04 pm
i just arrived here, see all of the guys unloading the tons and tons of food, this is the 11th year, so far, of this project. real incredible, really helping out many of those in need here throughout philadelphia. now, i'm joined here live by paul mueller, you own three dealerships here and also helping organize this incredible event. what's it mean for you. how does the partnership work with philabundance? >> terrific partnership, our 11th year of doing this. and it is the tri-state toyota dealers association, which consist of 25 dealers, in the philadelphian surrounding market, and, as i said, it is the 11th year we started out with five trucks, and a little bit of food, and this year we have 78 trucks, 340,000 pawn of food, which comes out to about 350,000 meals. >> last year i was here, we spoke last year, it was huge then, it is even bigger now, this is the largest donationer >> it is. the most number of trucks, the most volunteers we have, as you look around at all of
12:05 pm
these operating engineers, and all of the people, these are all people that have volunteered for this duty, and we can't thank them enough. this is our -- we have every major tv station, every major radio station, and every major sports team in the philadelphia market here today involved with this. they all sponsored a trunk, all down here, this is probably the only city in the country where could you see all of those people get together, that are normally competing to do something for the benefit of people that need it and we feel great about it. >> talk to me, sir, it is cold out right now, the time of year where you take for granted of course what you have. but a lot of folks in philadelphia, aren't lucky enough to have a hot meal every night. how does this help out those in need throughout philly and the region? >> well, again, we're going to feed 360,000 people with this. the sad part about that, according to philabundance,
12:06 pm
about one week's worth of meals for them. so what we're trying do here is a, feed all of those people but, b, bring awareness to philabundance, and the fact that people are hungry 36 a days a year, not just at christmas time. so we get a warm and fuzzy feeling at christmas, and that's great. but we go, these people are still hungry. so in a country like this, in today's environment, for somebody to try to decide between heating their home and feeding their kids, i think that's unconscionable. these aren't people that, you know, people think about people that are food deprived. these aren't people that are living under bridges and don't work. these are working class people , working people, working families, where the father got sick, the mother passed away, a child got -- there is something happened that is not their fault, and through circumstances of not their own making, they find themselves in dire straight. and, again, that's one of the things we want to make sure we take advantage of. >> paul, thank you so much. as you can see, well oiled
12:07 pm
machine here, all of this is going to be donated once again the largest donation ever in the 11 years of this event has happened. i'm live here in south philly, greg argos, cbs-3, "eyewitness news." >> greg, truely is wonderful event, thank you. and a reminder there is still time for to you take part in our "joy of sharing" toyfest campaign. we will be collecting toys all day long, monday, starting 6:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. right here at our cbs-3 studios, we hope you can stop by, come drop by, drop off new unwrapped toy. we will be loading up toys and delivering them to children in need. we will also be collecting toys at our holiday fest sell vagues this evening in bethlehem. our kate bilo, vittoria wood he will will tell you how they're celebrating the holidays in christmas city today on "eyewitness news" starting at 5:00. >> welcoming up on cbs-3 " eyewitness news" at noon, new jersey senator bob menendez calling out the justice department. when he want done, since jury was deadlock on cup charges against him. >> and the new technology being tested in the tsa line at one airport this holiday

12:12 pm
needs to be more than the 1100 >> rubio and lee have a lot of leverage, because senate republicans can only afford to lose two votes. president trump is confident he can get them on board. >> marco rubio, my lee. >> i think they'll be great. they're great people. they want to see it done. i know them very well. i know how they feel. these are great people. and they want to see it done. and they want to see it done properly. >> tennessee senator bob cork is her expected to vote against the bill, because he's concerned about it impact on the deficit. and two more republicans may not be able to vote at all. senators john mccain, and corcoran both ill, already missed votes this week. the republican majority is going to sling even further in january when democrat doug jones takes the seat he won in alabama's special election. weijia jiang, for cbs-3, " eyewitness news". new tsa security screening technology is being tested today in time for busy holiday travel. the scanners are designed to

12:14 pm
last month, when they announced their engagement after meeting on blind data year ago. >> also ahead on "eyewitness news," the word of the year, the bizarre term paying home and to the year of the millennial, you'll hear it next. >> now that we are right around the corner from this upcoming weekend it, promises all-in-all to be a tame one, spec to see some sunshine both days, temperatures start to rebound little bit. back to low to mid 40's which we should be this time of the year. there is the possibility, how much, especially sunday night we see wintery mix move through. we will talk about the chance chance of how much snow will fall from what's out there now, that's right after the break.
12:17 pm
>> another weekend another rounds of snow, that makes it three times this week? >> last weaken we had pretty well over achieving storm system brought quite a few inches of snow to part of the area. that is not going to be the case with this one. we'll see couple of inches, especially true for south jersey and delaware. >> a little bit. and it is going to certainly i think cause a lot of headaches for folks trying to travel later today, and into the evening, the timing is par for from ideal. pm commute drawing the short straw on this one. but it is a small disturbance, that's moving through, just area of surface low pressure moving on through in the next couple of hours, so quit hitter, just bad timing. we start things off by taking you out to the poconos, i was told it is snowing up there. i'm having trouble, rahel, do you see any snowflakes? if you look against the tree line, perhaps, you'll see them >> oh, i do. >> do you? i still can't. maybe i need to get my contact prescription changed.
12:18 pm
>> just tyne. >> i that's the thing, thank you for the zoom in our engineering, yes, trying to make these out. allegedly out there. but yes, that's the thing, this is slow to come in at the onset perhaps. but the snow will eventually become a lot more obvious, as the afternoon progresses. let's go to another camera. i want to show you different view, actually still lit bit of snow left out here on some of the sidewalks, some of the grassy surfaces, in plymouth meeting, over montgomery county traffic is moving along totally fine right now. is it going to stay this way? the odds are no. that's of course because you do have more snow on the way. let's go to the maps next. storm scan3, look what happens , how this just all the sudden burst on to the scene here in the last hour and a half or so. so this is still going to be spreading into our region over the next few hours, once it really get going, not talking about major intense snowfall, but you are definitely going to see the bulk of the steady snowfall come through, delaware, southern new jersey,
12:19 pm
and we will get to the future wet near second, but even just to show you an example of how much snow is coming down, in terms of rate, it is very, very light snow. but, because it is going to be around through the rest of the afternoon, into the evening, it is still going to have the opportunity to dump couple of inches worth. now, keep your eye on that darker shade of purple. next couple of however, this will spread over the area, again, blossoming if you will, but the darkest shades of purple go to delaware, and south new jersey. so, this is where your most likely to pick up the higher end of the tote that is we're calling for, but everybody's getting in on this. so it is 4:00 p.m., if this were to verify by 4:00 p.m., everybody stuck in there is looking at slow travel, just it will be inevitable, snow coming down, and then it starts to make it exit here come 9:00, 10:00 at the absolute he is latest 11:00 p.m. all getting out of here, so how much are we talking? one to 3 inches the expectation, we can totally handle this, just will make a mess of the typical afternoon, evening rush, one to 3 inches in the dark blue, coating to 2 e
12:20 pm
i95 corridor and mode yacht vicinity and again this is the cut off basically of where that winter weather advisory is posted as of 1:00 p.m. further to the north, quick coating. that's pretty much it. i do think you're in for nice ski weekend. they've been making snow all week long up in the mountains, because it has so much cold air to work w here a look at the wind speeds, at least nothing that's going to be too noticeable for you. the winds very, very light, barely noticable, and but it is cold outside. d i was seeing, now to see if i can finds them again, couple of flakes beginning to fly even here in berks county outside whitfield elementary school, so again, it is inevitable with time everybody gets in on this snow. it is just not here yet for all of us. it will be. 32 degrees, is at best what we can hope for for a high, it will be cold enough it is strictly snow for the entire region. but it does wrap up later this evening, and through the overnight, just cold, clearing out, once more. you may have little bit of clean to up do come tomorrow morning, unless you get out there earlier tonight. and clean it all up.
12:21 pm
but, like we mentioned, the weekend looking pretty quiet for the most part. maybe there is a wintery mix sunday night, but all-in-all, still have outdoor plans, you got to get in for the weaken, who doesn't, looks like you will be pretty much okay. >> hopefully the start of next week, pretty good. >> mild. >> sore bye that, all right, katie, thank you. nasa celebrating after ground breaking artificial intelligence, discover new planet. nasa researchers used advance machine learning technology from google, to find the planet thousands of light years away. correspondent michelle miller explains how the new technology could impact the search for alien life and another handle planet. >> in the never-ending search for live beyond planet earth, nasa scientists have uncovered the only other eight planet solar system they know of, that circles the sun. with help from google, and their machine learning computer software, scientists cents analyze thousands of data points, captured from this nasa planet hunting space telescope, the kepler,
12:22 pm
discovering this new planet, k pler. having all of this data coming from kepler is like trying to drink from a fire host. >> it says it is the way the new planet was discovered that has scientists buzzing. and, makes their jobs easier. >> the google ai system has been able to search through that pile of information, much faster than humans have been able to dig through it. >> you think about the analogy of the number of stars in the galaxy, being like the number of sands grains on a beach, as if we've been asked to search through all of the sand grains on the beach to find just the right sand grain. >> like earth, kepler90i is the third planet from the sun in a eight planet system. but, unlike earth? >> the temperature on the surface of this planet about 800 degrees fahrenheit, which is far too hot for the possible development of life as we know it, it is about 2500 light years away. that means, even traveling at the speed of light, it would
