>> rush is on, holiday travelers headed to the airport, they say this is expected to be rod holiday holiday season, a look at how things are moving at philadelphia international airport. >> whether you're flying, taking the train, or driving, holiday travelers have the weather on their side. clear conditions for now. but chelsea is tracking some changes for christmas. >> and if you were planning to take horse and carriage ride in philadelphia over the holidays, there will be fewer options. why one company is forced to close, and even turn over their horses cents. >> today is friday december 22 , good morning, i'm jim donovan. >> i'm rahel solomon. katie and meisha are both off. chelsey and pat are here to get us out the door. >> i feel like every year they say it is a records travel year, right? >> ya. >> i don't know who comes one that. >> someone sitting there with

a clicker. >> local roadways, though, pretty clear. >> oh,. >> most importantly. >> yes, dry start to the day. so today, good day for holiday travel. not the same scenario headed into tomorrow. you guys, temperatures right now, on the chilly side of things, but not dealing with the winds. so, it is okay, right? 36 degrees, not bad, right? thirty-six in wilmington, 32 millville, now in the lower 30 's down the shore, 31 degrees in wildwood. it is 32 in atlantic city. today we will see the temperatures on the rise, 46 by noon, 52 by 3:00. the clouds are going to be dominating the forecast throughout the day today and across the region, looking at 54 degrees down the shore, not as cold, and then we could have couple of showers up in the poconos, in the form after wintery mix, too, couple of rain showers later on today, as temperatures rise to around 37 degrees. so, here's what you need to keep in mind if you're traveling for the holidays or if you know someone that is going to be traveling for the holidays, mainly dry today, you got the green light. mild rainy saturday. not the best travel weather. sunday christmas eve looking

just fine. now, sunday night into monday morning we will be tracking another system, that could bring wintery mix to the area. maybe even close snowflake on christmas morning. i'll have details coming up in your full forecast, pat, we send it over to you. >> is it too much to ask for, you know, a whitt christmas around here? because that's really what i am ' lookinger. >> you're asking for a l but it might look beautiful headed into monday. i'll talk about that coming up >> we will take that, all right. so going to the really wide zoom. santa will be traveling quite a bit on christmas morning. here's some stats. santa will travel 175 million miles at about 5.6 million miles per hour. now i think the normal speed that you can go on the roadways, about six a miles per hour well above the speed limit. i wouldn't go that, would you guys? you wouldn't travel that fast, would you, jim, rahel? >> jim driving like 50 in a 55 , i've seen it. >> it is true. >> it is true, isn't it? all right, we move on to the vine street expressway, where we are having some issues this morning, and i'm having some issues with my clicker.

here is a wide-wide. it doesn't look that bad throughout the area in our normal travel spots where we have some issues, that's the boulevard headed towards the schuylkill expressway, not too bad, seeing mostly some pretty decent, and mays landing route 40 eastbound closed near old egg harbor road until about midnight. you'll want to use route 322 instead to get around it. more traffic if about ten minute, jim, rahel, over to you. >> thank you, pat. we need to ask santa for a new clicker. >> darn clicker. >> and chelsey, she said hers is not working. >> maybe someone took the batteries out for toys? well, you know how the saying goes, no place like home for the holidays. >> triple a estimates more than 1.2 million philadelphia area resident will travel 50 miles or more for the year end holidays corks set new record even though pat gallen little skip call. trang do live at philadelphia international airport. this morning, with a travel outlook. good morning, trang. >> well, good morning, rahel, jim. you can't tell it now, but earlier this morning, this airport was just absolutely packed, the security line,

snaking through the terminal, take a look here though, tsa doing excellent job every get that line down, right now, guys, if you are traveling, later this morning, now is the time to get here, because this is the shortest that we've seen this security line this morning. and as you mentioned, triple a project this will be record year for holiday travel, with more than 107 million people traveling to see family and friend for the holidays. now again here in the in the philadelphia area more than 1.2 million people leaving town. vast majority about 90% will be driving to their destinations cents, but train and air travel also up this year. some 80,000 people will be flying out of our area, during the ends of the year holiday travel rush. then we caught up with some flyers early this morning. now, here's what they had to say about traveling for the holidays. >> it is crazy. if you have a flight, get here early. >> we prepare to get here three hours before our flight. so we new we were going to experience lines like this, so that's why we came early.

>> definitely good advice, because it is not going to look like this throughout the day. another good tip, that the airport folks were telling me, was that they really are urging people to not wrap their gift before bringing them to the airport. because tsa may have to inspect them, and take off that beautiful wrapping that you spent so much time on. so that's another tip. also, i do want to say for the records, jim, rahel, dow not particularly need a white christmas like patrick. i'm totally fine if it doesn't snow. >> trang, i'm with you, okay, we're fine. >> i'm flying out christmas day, i don't need any bad weather for flights. >> thank you, trang. >> "eyewitness news" has learned a second person has died from injuries sustained in last week's fatal hit-and-run accident in northeast philadelphia, we first told but this story on december 13. the 33 year old plan ejected and killed, and in a early morning crash, dis stant street and torresdale avenue in talcony. also confirmed the driver of the car has turned herself in, facing charges in the now double fatal crash. >> four men who police say returned to help a family

member are hospitalized after they were shot during a fight in southwest philadelphia. this happened around 9:30 last night on the 6600 block every did your he will street. police say that a woman was fighting with her boyfriends in the street and then called family members for help. when they arrived, a brawl broke out. the boyfriend then opened fire , shooting the four men, the victims were returned to the hospital where they are in critical condition. police are searching for the shooter. staying in southwest philadelphia, police are also on the hunt for a kill here they say fatally shot a man outside after store. this happened at 6:30 p.m. last night 200 book block every woodland avenue. police say the shooter shot the victim in the chest. officers returned the victim to the hospital where he died. police are trying it anything out a motive for the shooting. >> shutting down popular horse-drawn carriage rides, orders filed yesterday explains legal agreement between the philadelphia carriage company and the city of philadelphia. the company will seize operations cents january 1st, and they'll forfeit ownership of the horses to the city.

city officials say some of the horses faced abuse, back in june they classified 13th street stables as inhumane. >> looks romantic, but when you find out what's behind the scenes it is horrible. i didn't realize where they lived. and i was shocked. it is so horendous. newark lawyer for the owner did not return a request for comment, but long time employee, kyle hoffman, told " eyewitness news," quote, we truely love these animals, the other horse-drawn carriage company will remain open, but philadelphia carriage company's horses are now headed for a sanctuary. >> government shutdown has been averted after lawmakers on capitol hill approved short-term solution to government funding. as hena doba explains, the temporary solution leaves a lot of work to do in the new year. >> these are the last votes expected in the house for the day, the week, the month, and the year. >> (cheers). >> before fleeing dc for the holidays thursday, lawmakers and the house and senate approved a stopgap measure to funds the government for the

we've got dry scan on storm scan3, do have some clouds, clouds will really be the dominating factor throughout the day today. we will deal with mostly cloudy skies specially as we head into the afternoon. high temperature on very mild note. right around 52 degrees, and with winds out of the south around five to ten. tracking two systems throughout the holiday weekends. here is system one, it will be bringing us some rain as we led into saturday, so saturday not the best travel day. we get brief break as we head into sunday christmas eve looking dry. and then have to mourn tore coastal area of low pressure headed into sunday night and monday, could get enough cold air seeping on in, and enough moisture kinds of spewing into the cold air, to tap into wintery mix, as we head into the we hours every monday morning, maybe even couple of wet snowflakes, as we start out christmas morning, and then it is all going to drown out, clear out by the afternoon, mainly quiet christmas eve. we will have to watch for potential for light morning snow, as we head into christmas day, so you got the green light today as far as

holiday travel is concerned. rain saturday, cooler sunday, then light morning, mix or snow shower, as we head into christmas day. looking good for game day for the eagles as well. but it will be cold. keep in mind, windchills are going to be in the 20's headed out to the gamement then big cool-down as we head into the middle of next week. pat? >> fingers crossed, i need the white christmas. i guess i should go further north then, still time. still time to get on the roadways, too, before the rush really hits. so far so good this is 95 southbound at girard avenue. there had been disable vehicle on that ramp, or on that off ramp. that has since been cleared. it is not causing any problems it wasn't then, not now. so good look at 95 you're jump willing out on the roadways at 6:15 this morning. >> this has been problem all morning, will continue to be, 22nd street ramp to the vine street expressway. there is a tractor-trailer disable, blocking that ramp. so do you have use either spring garden or broad street entrance as well, wide look at the vine street expressway, not looking too bad on the

vine itself. but again, that tractor-trailer you can see the flashing lights there that of course major problem. here is a look at the 42 freeway in new jersey, normally around 6:17 a.m. in the morning, bit of problem. not so right now. and we will look at the wide, as well, because the wide is showing us that throughout the delaware vale, we are staying at posted speeds, lots of green out there, and that's what we want, also, i was going to say, santa claus, he's going to travel all over the world, 526 million kids under the age of 14, he'll go 22 million kids per hour. >> wait. do you have to be under the age of 14? because i was specking -- >> well, i did the math. >> she wants that meghan markle dress. >> real complicated. rahel, doses not count, sorry, doesn't counted for you. >> well, no gift for me, but gift for eagles fans, game on christmas. >> yes, special guest? >> i do have a special guest, not santa claus, but it is close. >> close. >> so on christmas night the eagles battle the raiders. we will hear all of the action , on 94wip. from the one and only merrill

reese, who joins us this morning. hello, merle. >> hi, pat. >> so, merle, let's first discuss the eagles defense, which obviously struggled against the giants last week, eli manning through for 434 yards, they allowed 29 points, are you concerned? >> no, i'm not. i really am not concerned. they're a lot better than. that we know last couple of weeks, going back to seattle game, really haven't played like they can play. but, i think against the raiders, they realize that there is time to turn it on. they're home. undefeated at home. and this, pretty mediocre oakland off tens. >> now, let's flip it over to the offensive side for the birds. and nick foles, who looked fantastic on sunday, he threw for four touchdowns against the giants. how confident are you in nick being able to get the eagles this deep into the playoffs? >> well, i'm very confident in nick. because nick is very confident he knows what he is doing out there. he uses his weapons well. and there are a lot of weapons and he's not somebody who goes

out there and the eyes grow wide. he's very experienced back up. when you look at nfl teams, really only as good as your back up quarterback, because it is not an unusual circumstance for a quarterback that goes down. look, in this case, it is pretty tough. because you lose the mvp of the league for the rest of the season. but fortunately you have a very, very good quarterback in whom you can depend. >> merrill, i'll put you on the spot. one christmas gift for you. what could it be? >> win number 13. and with win number 13 comes home field advantage throughout the playoffs. they would end up as the number one seed in the nfc. and you know what, pat, that's interesting? if you told me earlier in the year that the eagles will win 12 games, i would say listen, this is a good team, they're going to win ten games, ten of six and have a shot it win the nfc east. then if you told me they would win the nfc east and at this point have 12 wins, without jordan hicks, without darren sproles, without jason peters,

been a familiar sight here in old city for 40 years now providing tourists with what seems to be acquaint sightseeing around this historic area as you mentioned come the start of the new year there will be one less horse-drawn tour company operating out of the city of philadelphia. >> smoke keen his friends will soon head to greener pastures. on thursday, the philadelphia carriage company agreed to cease operations at the end of the year and turn its horses over to the city. >> quaint and romantic when you find out what's behind the scenes it's horrible. >> i didn't realize where they lived and i was shocked. it's so more horrendous. >> reporter: the steve physical has attempted to gain control of these horses since june when city inspectors classified their stables on 13th street as inhumane. an attorney for the owner did not return a request for comme comment. but off camera one long-time employee spoke to "eyewitness

news" about the treatment of these horses. kyle hoffman says if they were sick, they were taken to a farm in lancaster county for treatment. we truly loved these animals. hoffman believes the city more interesting in obtaining the 13th street property than protecting the horses. come next year, only one horse-drawn carriage company will remain in operation in philadelphia. still, janet white had run the philly organization called carriage horse freedom says there's still work to be done. >> it's a start. it's not an end. it's the beginning. the real solution is a brand on horse-drawn carriages in philadelphia. >> reporter: so the philadelphia carriage company will be allowed to operate those tours through the end of the year then they shut down, turn the horses over to the city and the city says they will then be sent to a certified sanctuary. reporting live in old city this morning, jan carabeo cbs3 "eyewitness news". rahel and jim back in to you. >> thank you very much, jan. >> baby girl is recovering after a terrifying attack her mother says a raccoon attacked her baby

inside their north philadelphia apartment four month old journey black was rush to the hospital with bad facial cuts. it is really graphic. the attack happened wednesday night on the 2100 block of north 22nd street. journey's mother says she spotted the raccoon earlier in the dane called the landlord to remove it. she plans to pursue legal acti action. >> she was was laying on the floor. it dragged her off the bed across the room and she was like real bleeding and crying. >> landlord's responsibility. there's no reason an animal should have got in a house where kids are minors. >> the landlord tells "eyewitness news" everything has been resolved and to contact his lawyer. fires continue to scorch thousands of acres out in california officials are already thinking about the aftermath as john lawrence explains the governor is now asking the white house for help with disaster relief. >> reporter: it seems like it's the beginning of the end of the thomas fire in california. >> we're continuing to decrease the staffing on the fire but maintaining the appropriate

presence. >> reporter: officials say the blaze is roughly 65% contained. the fire which has burped down 273 acres in the ventura county area is expected to be fully contained on january 7th. >> we are working with the northeast winds that we have right now. it's red flag conditions for the area, but it's actually favorable conditions for the firing that is going on up there. >> reporter: thomas fire is the final wildfire that's still raging in california and all of the significant evacuation orders were lifted. california governor jerry brown requested a major disaster declaration from the trump white house. this request would boost state and local officials with cleanup and recovery efforts. it would also provide help to those who are homeless or displaced for a lengthy period of time. the state is awaiting a respon response. brown also issued a statement thanking all of those who battled the blazes and reminding californians that the golden state will recover. >> we are truly fortunate to be standing here and thankful to be
